THE X-FILES
    "A League of Their Own"
        By: Penni

It was Saturday. That word had no meaning to Fox Mulder until his
phone rang at approximately 9 am. He stumble off his couch where he had
been sleeping to answer it.

	"Mulder," he said, still tired.

"Mulder, it's me," Dana Scully said on the other end, "Tell me-
did you sleep late or did you just forget about the game?"

"The game?" Mulder paused, "Damn! I forgot!"

"Don't worry," she said, "you have another hour to get here. The
CIA team is going to be late again."

"I'll be there asap," he promised, and saying goodbye, he hung up.

A few minutes later, he stepped out of the shower and pulled on
his team "uniform," which consisted of dark blue shorts and a white shirt
that said "FBI" on the front and "Mulder" on the back. He pulled on his
cleats, picked up his sports gear, and headed out the door to his car.

-----

Scully silently cheered as Mulder's car pulled into the parking
lot of Oriole Park at Camden Yards. How they'd all gotten permission to
use the stadium, she'd never know. She ran down the aisled to the main
entrance, getting there just at the same time her partner did.

"Hey," she said, "I didn't think you'd make it."

	"Who, me?" He grinned.

"Yes, you," she said, "And now that both WHOLE teams are here, we
can start. Just pick a position and tell Skinner where you're playing."

As the game started, Mulder found himself wishing he had his hat
and sunglasses. From where he was standing, the sun was right in his
eyes. Which explains why he missed an easy catch that would have brought
his team up to bat.

"Mulder!" Scully yelled at him from first base, "you were supposed
to catch that!"

	"Oops," he said.

Luckily for him, he didn't miss the next catch, and ended the top
of the first inning. Colton was up to bat first. He struck out easily,
and Pendrell walked up to the plate. He hit a fast moving single. Next
up, Agent Fowley hit another. Mulder stepped up to the plate and smacked
the ball far enough to run to first. The bases were loaded when Scully
stepped up to bat. The pitcher, Ethan Hunt, threw two strikes and three
balls. Then, a perfect pitch sailed towards the plate. CRACK! The ball
sailed out of the stadium and hit the warehouse behind it. She slowly
made her round back to home plate, enjoying her victory. As she reached
the base, Mulder swept her up into a huge hug and swung her around.

	"Hey," he said, "Nice hit."

"Nice?? I hit the ball out of Camden Yards and you say it's
nice?" She asked, playfully pushing him away.

----Bottom of the 9th----
        2:30 PM

The score was 13 to 11, in favor of the CIA, and Mulder was again
up to bat. Runners were on first and second. There were two outs. The
pitcher, Hunt, had been hit in the face with a fly ball, and had been
replaced with Claire Phelps, who seemed to have very little aim. Two
balls whizzed past Mulder. He concentrated on the next throw. It sailed
to the air and connected with his side. He bent over in temporary pain as
the umpire told him to take his base.

"Damn," he said to himself on the way to first, "some pitch."

As he got to first, his partner approached home plate. They
needed a home run. She gripped the bat tightly as a ball flew past.

	"Strike one!" The umpire said.

More cheering seemed to come from everywhere. She concentrated on
the pitch. WACK!! The ball sailed up, up, and up. It curved and fell
down, down, down, until it hit the ground- right behind home plate.

"Foul ball, strike two," the umpire said.

"Last pitch," she told herself, and once again concentrated on te
ball. It was a slow, easy pitch. She watched it carefully, and swung....
CRACK!

The ball sailed up into the air and fell into the parking lot.
Cheers went up from all over the park-spectators, family, and both teams.
She ran this time around the bases and was greeted at home plate by her
entire team. Mulder eventually pushed his way through the crowd and
enveloped her in another hug.

"You won the game," he said, "nice hit."

She grinned. "You weren't so bad yourself, Spooky."

"Ha," he said, "I'm surprised you haven't melted, being the Ice
Queen."

She punched him playfully in the arm and smiled.

"You're in a league of your own, Mulder."

"No," he said, "We're in a league of our own."

Then, he bent down and gently kissed her forhead. She blushed and
returned the favor.

Up in the stands, Mrs. Scully and Mrs. Mulder were talking.

"Our kids are in a league of their own," Mrs. Scully said, smiling
happily, "A league of their own."
