Notes: For a while I've been trying to write something, but nothing came. Then I was listening to this song on the radio, it was sad. It was about these two people, a man and a woman, both very much dedicated to the other. They were thrown together against their wills, but after years flew by they saw the companionship with in each other and knew that it was right. Then one day she got sick, the man found himself determined to make their past mean something to her in her dying haze. He wrote her a poem, "My Legend" it was called. It spoke of two people very much in love with two separate destinies. One was destined to serve the other out of loyalty and guilt, while the other was destined to feel the pain. The pain their relationship brought to them, only there would be no regrets. The man read his soul mate the poem while she lay dying, and then sadly she did die, but the I found myself replaying this song over and over, amazed at how much this reminded me of Mulder and Scully. One of my friends said that the song was perfect for a fanfic comparison, so I came up with this idea. This series is a Mulder and Scully romance through and through so if this idea turns you away please don't read this. The first couple stories aren't MSR, but they will be so stay tuned. Please write and let me know what you think of this story, please tell me if you think it is worth continuing or if I should let it go. SUMMARY: Scully has a secret, Mulder has a burden and Skinner is standing directly in-between. With a request from Scully, Skinner assigns a new agent to the division hoping that it will solve his best agents problems. Little did he know that he was writing out the Legend that would live on forever. RATED PG., classification XRA . Scully cried slamming her head against the edge of her partners desk. "Damn it Mulder!" she rubbed her head and threw him the disk he had dropped on the floor. Mulder laughed and reached out to her. "Ahh, poor baby, come here and let mommy make it all better." Ignoring his comment, Scully turned around and sat back down in her chair across from his desk. "This is reticules, Mulder. How the hell are we supposed to get anything done in this closet size office. . ." "You never had a problem with our office before." "Mulder we've never had this many files in the office before." she sighed. "It seems like we are getting every unsolved case file, X-File and regardless. Admit it Mulder, we are swamped and need help." Mulder laughed. "What are you saying Scully. You want to welcome someone else into our nice happy family." he shook his head. "I don't think so. . . we are doing just fine." he paused. "And besides, Skinner may stick us with some deadbeat ass hole who doesn't know the difference between an alien and a big foot." Scully laughed. "Some day Fox Mulder. . . ." she stood up. "Someday you are going to wish you had more help than just me." she started to leave but turned back to face him. Her expression now more serious. "I won't be around for ever, and then you are going to wish you had someone else to trust." ************** Skinners Office 11:10 A.M. "Sir, you wanted to see me?" Mulder asked poking his head inside his superiors office. Skinner nodded and motioned for him to sit down. "Yes, I spoke with agent Scully earlier and she made it quite clear that she believes you need more help in your division." he paused. "I wanted to speak with you before I made any move in looking into this matter." "Sir, I don't know what Agent Scully's problem is. She's been acting strange lately." Mulder sighed. "I honestly don't think we need anymore help. I--, I think. . . I don't know." "Agent Mulder." Skinner said watching his words carefully. "Agent Scully said something to me this morning that took me aback. She seemed really distracted and when I asked her what was bothering her she became even more distracted." he paused. "Sir, is something wrong?" Mulder asked, studying his expression carefully. "No. Nothing." he stood up, pushing the comment Agent Scully had made to the back of his mind. "I may assign someone else to your division temporarily. . . .until you can get some of that paper work done." "That really isn't necessary." Mulder tried to assure him. He didn't want to tell his superior that he didn't trust anyone but his partner. Paranoia was something he had been unfortunately granted and if someone else were to move in on his position with in the FBI, he didn't know how he'd handle it. He had gotten used to Scully. . . but that wasn't really what happened. He had wanted to trust her from the first day and he did, with his life. "Really sir, Scully and I are just fine. . . I think she's just worried about the paper work, we can't really pass that off to another agent because they weren't there when we investigated it." Skinner nodded. "All right, but if I get another request from your partner I will assign someone else to your division." he grinned. "And I assure you agent Mulder that it will be someone you trust. I promise we won't have another Krycek incident. As a matter of fact there is an Agent with the Baltimore Bureau that has expressed interest in your work and believe you share similar experiences in the area of alien abductions and the loss of a younger sibling." "Has this agent been with the Bureau long?" "Actually he has, I believe he graduated from the academy a year after you did." Skinner grabbed a folder of the desk and flipped through it. "His name is Michael Cameron, age 37. He graduated in 1985 at the top of his class and Quantico. He's not married. . . " he laughed. "He too earned a nickname at the academy." "Let me guess." Mulder mumbled. "Mikey." "No Agent Mulder." Skinner said ignoring the annoyance in the younger agents voice. "He earned the nickname Kicker after he got half of his class kicked out of the academy for cheating on a practical exam. . . I guess he didn't make many friends at the academy." "Sir, I already told you. . . we don't need someone else following us around on our investigations." he shifted uncomfortably in his seat. "Agent Scully and I are perfectly fine on our own. We have our own ways of doing things." "If you mean always stepping our of the FBI jurisdiction you should find another way of doing things. . I can't keep getting you out of trouble it's not fair to my other agents, nor is it fair to Agent Scully who would do anything in the world to protect you from danger. All you do is get her in trouble, put her in danger, and worry her more than she needs." "What?" Mulder stared at him in disbelief. Was Skinner blaming him for Agent Scully's abduction and disease? He had always blamed himself, but never in a thousand years would have thought his superior would blame him as well. Maybe it really was his fault. "I know what you are thinking." Skinner said softly, trying to ease some of the antagonism out of the room. "And I am not blaming you for what has happened to her. All I am saying is that your actions have put her behind bars, gotten her sick, nearly killed and most of all careless. She's lied for you more times than I can count and her judgment it constantly clouded by the urge and need to protect you." he sighed. "I don't know what you've done to her. When she first came to work with you she was chosen because of her ability to choose the proper methods of investigation. We found her belief in science over God fascinating and knew she would be the perfect one to keep you in line." he shook his head. "We thought she'd rub off on you, but we never imagined that you would rub off on her with this much impact." "I'm sorry, I never meant to hurt her in anyway." Mulder felt the familiar sting of tears creeping into his eyes. "I would never intentionally hurt her, she's all I really have." "I know. . . " Skinner assured him. "That's why I have kept you two together for so long, with out you I know that Agent Scully would be lost, and give up. She may be very strong, but not without you, you are her strength. And I know that without her, this dark passion creeps out from your soul and makes you blind to the proper authority. I've seen you get this way, Mulder. When your partner disappeared for those three months all you wanted to do was get revenge, your methods became dark and there was no light for you." he smiled thinking of the chemistry between his agents. "But when she returned the light was there to help guide you back to the right path." "She's my strength." Mulder admitted, thinking about what Skinner had just said. It was true. Without Scully he was scared to face life. He wasn't sure of exactly when he started depending on her so much, but he knew it must have been around the time she was assigned to him. . . At night when his dreams plagued him he would call her and she would make everything feel all right. Just her voice helped soothe him from pain and loneliness. He would often find himself wondering what his life would have been like if she hadn't been assigned to him. Nothing would have meant anything to him. She was his air, his last breath and then after. He knew what he had to do. It was time to do something for her. "Sir, I think you better have this Kicker guy transferred here." Mulder said with out regret. "If Scully says we need him, then we need him. I'm not going to risk the chance of losing her again by one of my careless, selfish acts. It's time that the X- Files division expanded at gets the number of Agents it deserves." Skinner nodded. "All right, you go back and tell your partner that help is coming, and I will arrange for him to transfer here by the end of this month. Okay?" "Thank-you, sir." he replied in agreement, and with that he stood up and left the office behind. ************** Scully's Apartment 7:18 P.M. Miss Scully, We regretfully must inform you that your last blood panel showed a slight malignancy that unfortunately must be determined that the cancer you were formally diagnosed with has indeed left it's state of remission and has plagued your body once again. Therapy is recommended as is further testing to note the severity of the cancer strain you have. An immediate appointment must be made to determine and verify the exact location and presence of the new growth. If treatment is not desired further tests are recommended to eliminate all possibilities and to make the survival rate as high as possible. We here at Georgetown University wish you the best of luck for the upcoming complications your form of cancer may cause you. If you have any questions you may contact me or my associates at 555-1212. Once again good luck with this round of treatment and remember you conquered it once, you can do it again. Sincerely, Anthony Galliger MD. (Cancer Specialist, Georgetown U Hospital) Scully read the letter over for the hundredth time. It had to be a mistake, how could it have returned. Out of habit her hand traveled to the back of her neck, to the place of her latest implant. Things had gotten to good and now it was time for the punishment again. The painful punishment. Placing the letter on the coffee table in front of her, she closed her eyes and tried to imagine what she was going to tell her partner. She couldn't tell him that it had returned, but then when he would start to notice her nose bleeds, her loss of weight and color he would know something was up for sure. Then he' probably blame himself again for failing her, and then yell at her for not telling him sooner. . . "I can't tell Mulder." she told herself softly. "I have to get him to trust another so that I can go." The whole point of asking Skinner for a new partner was to work on Mulder, to get him to feel comfortable with someone else. That was why she had requested to choose the partner herself. She had two agents pulled up after extensive research. Michael Cameron, known as Kicker, had graduated top of his class. His reputation was known to be a bit spooky which had interested her right away. Both Mulder and Kicker had lost there siblings to an unknown presence, both were fascinated by the occult and unknown. Kicker was perfect for him. Another Agent she had Skinner pull was a woman by the name of Danielle Chase. Someone just like her. Danielle had a background in medicine and was a forensics pathologist. Her attitude marked skeptic made it even more interesting. If Kicker didn't work then Dani would. She had it all planned and so perfectly. She only hoped Mulder would let her go without asking questions. Questions with no answers weren't a good sign. She had already avoided Skinners round of questions. When he had asked why she wanted a new person to work with she simply told him, "To help Agent Mulder let go." She knew he didn't understand, but he didn't press it any further and she was grateful to him for that. Picking up the letter once again, she read it again. . . Her time was running out. ***************** November 18th, 1998 McCollins Pub Washington DC 8:20 P.M. Mulder drummed his fingers impatiently, waiting for his partner to return from the ladies room. He had put off telling her about Kicker and had invited her to dinner hoping that he could make her happy. Fat chance and he knew it. She had only accepted because the power was out in her apartment and she couldn't cook. "Sorry." Scully said, returning to her seat across from him. "There was a line." "No problem." Mulder assured her, glancing back down at his menu. Now was the time, he had to tell her. "So." he said slowly. "I think I forgot to tell you that we are getting a new man in our division." "Oh?" Scully glanced up at him, pretending to be in shock. "Who, do I know him?" "His name is Kicker." he replied. "Ironically he also has earned himself a spooky reputation and Skinner figured he would be perfect for us." he grinned. "Actually he sounds sort of interesting. Makes you wonder how many agents find the X-Files interesting enough to pay any attention too." "You'd be surprised." Scully mumbled under her breath, hoping he wouldn't guess that she was the one who had recommended Kicker to Skinner. She had come across at least a hundred Agents who found the X-Files interesting and fascinating. In a way it was kind of scary to see how many people had knew about their work. "What was that?" Mulder asked, trying to catch his partners last comment. She shrugged. "Nothing, I just said that there are probably a ton of agents that find our work interesting. I used too, then I got thrown in with you and now I think a lot of it is just BS." She laughed. "I mean come on Mulder you have to admit that some of the cases we get dumped on us are pretty funny." "Funny?" he raised his eyebrows. "I would never classify anything we've ever done as funny. I mean you nearly di. . . " he shut his mouth before he said something he'd regret." "I nearly what?" she asked angrily. "I nearly died? Is that what you wanted to say, Mulder?" "No!" She shook her head. "I don't need to be reminded of what happened to me, every single day. All you do is dote all over me, treating me like I'm going to break any minute and then you'd be with out your precious Scully. I have some news for you Agent Mulder, your precious Scully isn't made of glass, I'm not going to break. So for Gods sake please stop reminding me of what almost happened. I'm fine now, I didn't die, I hung in there." "I'm sorry." Mulder apologized and placed his hand atop hers. "I don't mean to keep reminding you of what happened, I just feel like you don't talk to me anymore and asking you how you are is the only way I can hear your voice. I just want things to be the way they used to be. The way they were before your abduction and cancer. We were so good together then. Now I feel like we aren't even friends. All we do is fight. Partners should talk to eachother, Scully. That's really all we have." Scully bit her lower lip. She knew she was acting cruelly towards him, but she didn't want him to know about her relapse. Locking eyes with him she smiled. "All right, let's talk. . . I realize that I haven't been fair to you lately. It's just that I'm tired of all the paper work and strange looks I get when I walk down the halls of the J. Edgar Hoover building. It never used to bother me, but now it does and I'm sick of it, it's not you that I'm sick of, it's just the whole thing that I over came." she paused. "I over came that cancer, but it made me tired, Mulder. Not tired of life, but tired of being the plague that I am. People treat me like I'm a disease. I hate the way people avoid me in the halls, the way voices stop when I walk into a room. I hate it." "And it's my fault." Mulder said sadly. "They stare at you because you are my partner. You are the partner of *Spooky* Mulder, it comes with the territory. They also are amazed that you were gone three months, returned nearly dead, given terminal cancer and survived it. They don't know what to say to you, so instead they walk on, not knowing that they are hurting you. Being my partner just makes it worse, they blame me for what you have become, and the only way to save your name is to let you go." "What?" Scully asked in shock. "I'm letting you go. . . that's what you want isn't it? Requesting someone else so that eventually he could take your place?" "No. . . ." she lied. "No Mulder, I did it because we need help. I don't want a new partner. I like the one I have, bad theories and all. And I know you know that. I wouldn't have stuck around this long if I had hated you, or blamed you. Not even I can take all of your crap and not mind it." Mulder laughed. "Gee Scully, I don't know what to say, I think I'm in love." he paused after he said that. Was he? Pushing the thought aside for later questioning he focused his attention back on her. "No really Scully, do you mind being my partner?" "No." and it was the truth. "You give me strength Mulder and that is all I can ask of you. Just keep giving me my strength to survive, with out it all I have are some questioning thoughts about my faith in God and that really isn't enough to keep me going." "We belong together, Scully. Like Tooms and liver." he grinned at his analogy. "Okay so we have had a few funny and strange cases." Scully laughed. "Mulder the Legend has just begun for us." **************** THE END Please tell me what you think so far. I realize this one was a bit slow, but I think it deserves the title of a series. What do you think? Should I continue, or should I let it rest. I want to know!!!
