She did not bother to turn on any lights, He wouln't have. She just went over to the black leather couch and sat down. Her face was pale and her eyes bloodshot. Her normally inplace auburn hair was messy, making her look all the more distrought. She just sat there and let her mind wander. * I don't believe it* she told herself. She had told herself this a million times since it had happened four days ago. And she had also told herself that she had seen it with her own two eyes and that they had not decived her. "He was sitting right here, " she said aloud to no one," Alone. He must have felt all alone. My god what was he thinking?!? Why? I don't understand! I don't understand !" She tried to stop from crying again. It seemed that it ws the only thing she had done in the past four days. That and talk to Belvins and the committee. She reflected on what she had said to them. Had it been a betrayal to him to tell them what she had? She had made it sound as if that finding the truth about the existance of aliens was all he had cared about. And she knew, of course, that this was not true. She looked around the room. It was a familiar place, and though shrouded in darkeness she could see many things that brought back many memories. She had been here before when she had thought him dead. Then she had been angry and was seeking revenge. But now there was no one to confront. No one to get answers from except herself. She tried to imagine what was going on in his head. She had been so shocked the past couple of days that she could not think straight. But she had so much to get out and no way of expressing it. She opened her eyes and looked at his desk. Papers, magazines, and pens and pencils lie scattered as he had left them. She got up from the couch and walked over to the desk. She picked up a piece of paper and a pen. She sat down at the desk and turn on the light. It blinded her briefly. Then she just started to write. She had no idea what she was writting, she just felt she had too. She wrote for a long while and when she was done this is what it said. * Here I write to you again as I have before. I don't know what I'm doing here. I just couldn't stay away. It was as if you called me and asked me to come, although I know this is not true. So here I am. Alone. As I'm sure you felt a few days ago. I woke up the morning after I had found out and thought about going to work and seeing you. But then I had to face the terrible reality that you wouldn't be there and you never would again. I've taken a few personal days off. I didn't do anything on these days except sit by my window and watch the rain fall down outside, just like the tears that fell from my eyes. My mother called me when she found out and I told her I was okay but just wanted to be alone. I half expected her to stop by my apartment , but I think another side of me knew she would not because of the way I had asked her not to. I sit here and I can almost feel you near me. I think of what you must have been thinking. And I can't help but feel that what I said to you drove you to do this, yet I still cannot believe that you could ever do such a thing. Even if you had thought that this disease that i have was your fault. It wasn't and I wish you had said something to me. I just think I could have done something. Reassured you that there was nothing that you could have done. I feel as if I've let you down , and myself in some way. I wonder if I had said something to you, maybe I wouldn't be alone now. I always relied on you as a great strength in my life, as I feel you did with me. And you proved to be a close and trusted friend. But you were more than a friend to me, I realized that a long time ago. Though I could have never told you this, I wonder if I had, would it have made I difference? I loved you. I still do. I don't think I could ever have loved anyone but you. You and I had a connection that I feel will not be broken by death. I don't think that anything could be strong enough to break it. But I wonder if you felt the way I do. If you had, did you do this because you thought that you had hurt me? But if you loved me would you have left me alone to face this world of monsters and fear? I don't know the answers to any of these questions, and the only one who can answer them is now lost to me forever. This is the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. My heart broke when I walked in that door and looked down on the face that had been so full of life hours before. Now it was stiff and covered with the fluid that had once given it life. I had to turn away. I was in complete shock. Then I walked out. I didn't even realize I was walking until I found myself at my car door ,unlocking it. I opened the door, got in and closed it behind me . I somehow managed to drive myself back to my apartment. When I got inside and closed the door, everything , my whole world suddenly crashed down around me. I tried to hold everything back ,but I couldn't. My worst fear had come true. Losing you. And I just slumped to the floor, crying. A few hours later I was called into the bureau by Blevins. I told him and the committee about the alien and the lies and everything else there was to tell. I couldn't keep my composure when I spoke of what had happened that morning. And after I told them about it, I just got up and left. I don't quite know what to do with myself. But I keep thinking that this is some dream, some nightmare. That the man I knew, the man that I had loved could not be capable of hurting himself and me this way. I really have nothing else to say. There was really no point in writing to you, except to spill all my damned emotions. Your funeral is tommorrow.I'm trying to find the courage to go. I never once thought that this is how it'd end. That this is how *We'd* end. I don't know what I'm going to do. So I'll stop now. I just wish I could have told you so many things that my heart longed to say but my lips dare not speak. Goodbye , for now but not forever. This I somehow know . Because even as I sit here I can feel you close by.* She looked at the letter when she had finished writting it. She left it on his desk. She wipped away the tears that had fallen onto her cheeks. She was about to get up and leave, when she heard someone outside. Then she reached for her gun. The person outside was unlocking the door. Her heart was pounding fast in her chest. She cocked her gun. The door opened. " Freeze," she yelled at the figure in the doorway. She couldn't see who it was. " Keep your hands up, " she said as she walked over to the light to turn it on. She flicked on the light and nearly died of shock at that moment. She let her gun fall to the floor, and her mouth gapped open. She just stared. And the deep, hazel eyes of Fox Mulder stared right back at her. " Oh my god! I'm hilusinating......." she whispered. Mulder walked toward her. " You know you're not, " he said with a semi grin on his face. Scully didn't know what to think. She was in more shock than she had been four days ago. Mulder drew her close to him in a warm enbrace. She could feel their connection and she grabbed on to him as if for dear life. He let go and looked down at her. " Scully , I have a lot to explain and a very short time to do it." She looked at him not quite processing what he'd said, " What are you talking about? I thought you were-" " I know what you thought but it's just a part of the lie Scully. Come on we don't have much time." Then he led her, still in shock, from the apartment. Dedications: All of you that I care about , you know who you are and I just want to say thanks for putting up with me!! ************************************************************************************** ***************************************** Dana Scully didn't understand what was happening. She was being led out to the street by her partner, Fox Mulder, who she had thought to be dead just a few minutes before. But here he was. The same brilliant, handsome man that she had known for four years. Scully tried to clear her head, but everything was happening so fast. Mulder opened the passenger door of his blue-green Ford Taurus and let Scully in. She appeared to be getting over the shock. He let his eyes linger on her form for a moment , and what he saw made his heart sink. She was getting weaker. He could see it in her too pale skin. Her sea green eyes, which were usually so beautiful and attentive , were now cloudy and bloodshot. The cancer was spreading inside her. * I can't watch her suffer like this. I won't* Mulder that. And he fully intended to do something to stop her pain. Mulder walked over to the driver's side and got in. Scully looked at him. She thought of all the times that something or someone had caused them to be apart , then she thought that it must be fate that they somehow found each again. And in turn, found themselves again too. Scully found her voice again, " Mulder what the hell is going on here?? I mean I saw you.......you were dead. It was you, and I didn't know what to do , and why the HELL did you wait til now to tell me you were alive!?!? I mean-" Mulder interrupted her before she could finish, " Scully slow down. I would have if I could've, but there wasn't all that much time for that." He then started the car and proceeded to pull onto the street. " Mulder would you care to explain what's going on here, because ten minutes ago you were dead and I'm still not sure if this is a dream or not. " Mulder thought about everything that had happened in the past couple of days.............four days ago he had been sitting in his apartment . He had been thinking about what Scully had said , that the men that gave her her cancer had done it to make him believe. The thought hurt him terribly. That he could have been the cause of someone he cared so deeply for's suffering. He sat there on his couch, with tears rolling down his cheeks, wishing that she had never walked in that basment door four years ago. " None of this would have happened if she had never met me..." and at the same time he said this he thought about where he would be today if he haden't had her in his life. * Probably dead* he thought. Though he knew he had had a part in causing Scully's disease, he knew that THEY were one of the main causes of this. If Scully was right and they had done all this just to make him believe, then maybe they had had all this planned out from the beginning. Scully disappearing, her return, and her cancer. But there was one thing that they could not have planned, Mulder falling in love with her. He hadn't planned on it himself. But she was the only one that had stood by him through all the madness they had experienced. She was the only one...... and that's why all this hurt so much. Mulder sat there thinking of all this, and all the "lies" that he had been told, or where they really lies? He had no answers. And nowhere to turn. He looked at his gun sitting on the coffe table. His eyes were fixated on it for some unknown reason.......then suddenly he heard a noise from outside his apartment. It was the sound of footsteps, but something told him that these weren't some neighbors passing by on their way to their apartments. He reached for his gun and started toward the door. The footsteps grew silent. He listened and suddenly the door opened " Freeze," he yelled at the person in the doorway. But to Mulder's astonishment , he found himself starring at his own face. He could not believe his eyes, what the hell was going on here? " What the hell is this," he questioned the man with the same form as him. The other Mulder looked at the real one and then spoke with his voice," I don't have time to explain Agent Mulder. I've been sent here to give you a message. It's from a certain chain smoking friend og yours. He knows that your partner is growing weaker. He wants to make a trade." " What are you talking about? Trade what? Who are you? Why should I believe you anyway." " Listen Agent Mulder, I'm taking a risk being here. This message was suppose to be delivered to you by a man working for your black lunged friend and he's going to be here any minute. He'll kill me if he finds me here. So shut up and listen for a minute. He wants to trade your partner's life for The X-Files. But I'm here to tell you that there's another way. " Mulder looked at the man still not quite believing what he was saying. He lowered his gun, which he soon decided was a stupid move. Before Mulder could do anything, out of nowhere came the bounty hunter who promteley stabbed the other Mulder in the back of the neck bringing him to his knees. The fake Mulder lie lifelessly on the floor. Mulder turned expecting the body to soon decompose into a green slime like he knew all the other clones did. But the body remained. The bounty hunter looked toward Mulder. Mulder controlled his anger for the being , knowing that it would kill him. " Come," said the bounty hunter, " I assume you know what this is about." Mulder relcutantly followed him out to the hallway and then down to the street where a black sedan sit infront of his apartment building. " Get in," said the bounty hunter. Mulder opened the door and slipped inside. Sitting in the back set was Cancerman. Mulder gave him a look that could kill. " Well Agent Mulder, it's good to see you. How's your mother? Well I hope?" " That's not why I'm here, is it, " he replied sharply." " No. No it's not. You know why you're here Agent Mulder. Now let's say we negotiate-" Mulder cut him off. " It's a deal." Cancerman looked startled. He haden't expected a reply so quickly. He took a drag on a freshly lit cigarette. " Well , that was fast." " Yeah well there wasn't much to think about." " You're willing to give up your search for the truth, your search for your sister, your work for one person? Really Mulder, I thought you were more of a player than that." Mulder looked at the floor. " There's not much left playing for anymore." Cancerman looked at Mulder . He saw a new weakness in the man before him, and decided to use it to his full advantage. " You realize what you're giving up Mulder?" " You sound as if you want me to answer other wise." " Agent Mulder I could careless which way you answer. We both knew this day would come, didn't we?" " Or maybe you planned it this way." " Now Mulder, all I'm saying is that you were once so driven to find the truth, and now you're willing to give it all up for her." " She's the only reason I'd give that search up," his voice trembled as he said those last words. " Now just tell me when and where to be, and I'll have her with me." Cancerman smiled to himself and out the cigarette out in the ashtray on armrest of the door. ********************************************************************** " So we're going there now," Mulder said finishing his explaination of what had happened in the past four days. Scully sat shaking her head. " Stop the car. " Mulder kept driving. " Mulder stop the car. Mulder stop it now!" She then reached over, and grabbed hold of the wheel. " Scully what the hell are you doing!??!!??" The car swarved on the highway they were on, but fortunatley there were no other cars on the road. Scully kept pulling on the wheel, and she was stronger than Mulder thought she would be. Finally to avoid an accident Mulder gained control of the wheel and pulled to the side. Scully got out of the car and started walking back the way they had come. Mulder got out as well and started walking toward Scully who was still walking in the opposite direction. "Scully what the hell were you thinking!?!? Were you trying to get us killed," Mulder asked, anger apparent in his voice. Scully stopped walking and turned to him. " Mulder I won't let you do this. It's, .....it's just stupid that's what it is!!" Mulder looked down on her face, which seemed firmly set on the idea of not giving in. " Scully this is a cure. This is going to save your life." He looked away from her for a moment and then turned back to her. She could see a million words in his eyes that his lips would not speak. " You know if I thought that there was another way, I'd do it. But there's not. And I'm not willing to give you up for a truth that's shadowed by so many lies." Mulder eyes were misty. It took all of Scully's willpower not to cry . " Mulder I can't let you do this. I -" " I caused this to happen to you scully. You said it yourself. But now I can do something about it." A single tear rolled down Scully's cheek. " No. No it's not. I was angry Mulder," her voice wavered," I wanted answers and it was just easier to believe what that man had told me. And I took it out on you. I ...... I don't know what to say. But I'm not going to go through with this. It's not worth it Mulder......" Mulder looked at her almost angry. He took her in his arms and held her fast, with tears falling from his eyes. " Yes it is. You're worth it Scully. You're worth it." Those last few words filled her heart with love and hope. And she held on to him tight. Suddenly the lights of a car could be seen, and a black sedan came into view. Mulder and Scully reluctently let go of each other to see what was going on. The sedan pulled over to the side of the road. Mulder reached for his gun. Then a man stepped out of the car, and Mulder lowered his gun when he saw who it was. Jeremiah Smith started toward the pair. " What's going on here," Scully asked. Jeremiah Smith looked at Mulder," You were told there was another way Agent Mulder." Mulder's eyes widened when he spoke those words. Jeremiah smiled a half smile and started back to his car. He motioned for Mulder and Scully to do the same. Mulder opened the door to the sedan allowing a still confused Scully to step in. Then Mulder followed behind her. The car then turned around and started back down the highway. ************************************************************************************** * Skinner sat in his office. Across from him smoke billowed from a cigarette in the hand of an evil man. " So with Agent Mulder gone and Agent Scully sick, I'm assuming that The X-Files project will soon be terminated," Cancerman said confedently speaking lies to which he knew the truth. Mulder had never shown up for there meeting so he had decided to take some action by telling the Assistant Direcxtor what to do next. But what happened next he did nmot plan on. " Well I don't know who your informant is, but Agent Mulder is alive and well. The body the police found at his apartment was shown not to be him. And he came into the office today to clear up where he's been the past couple of days. Also Agent Scully just had a visit with her doctors who were shocked to have found that by some miracle her cancer has dissappeared." Cancerman nearly choked on the smoke he was inhailing. " That's not possible!" " Well it is," Skinner said with a smirk on his face." Oh and By the way, you can find someone else to do your dirty work for you from now on. There are plenty of rats in the sewer that would probably jump at the chance." Cancerman turned angryily and walked out of Skinner's office. The phone on his desk rang. " Skinner." Skinner listened to the voice on the other line for a moment. " Yes. I want to thank you for what you've done." He listened." No, but he'll be looking for you soon. You'll be safe there though." He listened again." Thank you again." then he hung up the phone and sat down at his desk almost triumphantley. ************************************************************************** Mulder and Scully stood outside her apartment. She opened the door. " Would you like to come in," she offered. Mulder shook his head and let out a yawn. " No thanks. I think I'm going to go home and get some rest." " Yeah. It's been a pretty exhusting week for both of us." She smiled softly and Mulder could see that the sparkle had returned to her eyes, and the color to her cheeks. Dana Scully was cured, and Mulder felt happier than he had felt in a long time. Scully turned to go inside, but Mulder's voice stopped her. " Scully I just wanted to say that maybe you didn't know it then but I hope you know it now. You're a great strenghth to me and the only one that stayed by my side. Which may question your sanity," he added humorously, "But I just wanted you to know how much you mean to me." Then he leaned down and kissed her on the cheek. Scully felt herself tremble as his lips touched her cheek. The kiss lasted a little longer than a friendly, innocent kiss should last. Mulder's lips felt hot when he released them from her cheek. Then they just stared a each other. Scully was the one to break the gaze . She stepped closer to the door . " Goodnight Mulder. See you at work tommorrow." Then she went inside and closed the door behind her. Mulder turned down the hall and smiled to himself. The dynamic duo was back. Scully flicked on the light and smiled one of the biggest smiles. If there had ever been any doubt in her mind that Fox Mulder loved her, it was now put to rest. Scully sat down on her couch and started to pray. Then suddenly she realized something.......the letter she had left at Mulder's apartment. The End
