She could feel the curve of the hammock beneath her and the hard camp pillow as she rocked. Aunt Olive and Uncle Louie let them use their camp two weeks each summer. Sometimes, if Daddy was on leave, they used it in the autumn, too. She smiled and sighed a happy, "Mmmmmm," snuggling deeper into the pillow. She felt fingers softly brush the hair back from her face, then a kiss on the top of her head. Keeping her eyes closed, she let her mind idly work on it. The fingers were too large for Mommy, so it must be Daddy. She loved it when Daddy could spend time with the family. "Daddy?" It must be late. Daddy had come to get her for bedtime. All that sun, swimming, running and climbing had wiped her out. She felt too lethargic to get up to go inside. "Daddy, would you carry me to bed?" Her voice sounded small and earnest, with complete confidence in her father. His strong arms lifted her, and she snuggled her face into his neck, taking a deep breath. She loved his scent. Whenever she was upset or scared and her father was away, she would hide in his closet and just let the scent of him sooth and comfort her. She took another, more tentative breath. His scent was a little different, but had that same comforting quality it always had. She relaxed and enjoyed being transported in the security of his arms. He laid her on the bed and pulled up the covers. Still without opening her eyes, she held onto his hand and pleaded, "Stay with me a little while, just till I go to sleep." He smiled, kissed her hand and said, "Okay, Dana. But your fever's pretty high. You need to take the medicine the doctor gave you first. I'll be right back." She nodded and released his hand. He returned quickly, as promised, and helped her half-sit to take her medicine. He had to help hold the water glass because her hands were weak and shaky from the fever. He helped her lie down again, and tucked the covers under her chin. "I'm putting your water glass on this little table in case you get thirsty." She nodded again. She was so sleepy. But she managed a slightly sleep-slurred, "I love you, Daddy." He brushed her hair back and kissed her forehead. "I love you too, Scully." When he left her bedroom, Mulder left the door half open so he could hear her in the night if she needed him. End
