LOVE AT FIRST SHOT
Author---Teall1@aol.com

 Part I.

It was late in the afternoon when Scully and Mulder got the call
from AD Skinner to meet in his office. Being tired from too many
reports and too little sleep, they both groaned but made their way to
Skinner's office.

"What do you think is up, Mulder?" Scully asked, in a weary
voice.
"Who knows?" her partner answered , equally as tired. "Let's
hope, whatever it is, it doesn't mind us taking a nap first." Scully
smiled at his comment, appreciating his droll sense of humor. For the
millionth time, she thanked her lucky stars for being assigned to
Agent Fox Mulder as his partner in the XFiles division of the FBI.
When she first got the job, she was leery of his reputation. But,
although the two of them had never been more than very close friends,
she admired Mulder and loved him as a treasured friend.
     Skinner was waiting for them.
"Come in, Agents," he invited, but it was more of a directive.
"Something has come up and I think you two are perfect to handle
this." Scully and Mulder glanced at each other, already abandoning
any hope of a good night's sleep tonight, as they saw Skinner reach
for a fairly thick file.
"What is it, sir?" Scully asked.
"Well, in Florida, around the Kennedy Space Center, there have
been some.....unusual reports."
      "Concerning what?" Mulder queried.
      Skinner looked uncomfortable.
"The usual sightings, but with a twist this time," he replied.
"Sightings?" Mulder repeated, with a wicked grin. "You mean
UFOs..." Skinner nodded, clearly unhappy to be contributing to
Mulder's obsession. However, he knew his agent's intelligence and
perseverance, and knew he should be direct.
"For the past several weeks, there have been people saying they
have seen things in the sky. It's the usual strange lights,
electrical abnormalities, etc. However, the twist here is that one
or two of the sightings have been in broad daylight."
Mulder's glance shifted to Scully, who was paying rapt
attention, or appeared to be. This was different, but did not seem
plausible.
"In the daylight?" Mulder asked. "How did others not see it
then? Do we have any thing to go on that it's not a hoax?"
"Yes," Scully chimed in, "are we being sent on a wild goose
chase?"
Skinner began to shift in his chair. "Agents, one of the
sightings was by the mayor of the town. He is a pretty calm and
reputable man. The town is a sleepy little place called Seascape and
is not very well-known. It is off the tourist track, not far from the
Space Center. I am sending the two of you there tomorrow morning."
Skinner still looked uncomfortable.
"What is it, sir?" Scully pressed. "You look as if there is
more." She leaned forward in her chair and quickly glanced at her
partner whose eyes seemed to register her thoughts. Skinner cleared
his throat.
"Scully and Mulder, I know how you both feel about working alone
on these cases. However, there will be someone joining you this time.
She is a photographer; she is a"....Skinner paused...."a paranormal
photographer.'
    "Sir?" Mulder said.
"She has been called in on several cases of sightings to
photograph and she is quite good. I am assigning her to this case, to
snap some shots."
There was silence for a moment. Scully looked at Mulder.
"Sir," Mulder began, "pardon me, but why is she being assigned to
us? Scully and I have a perfect working understanding. You know I
hate interference." Skinner smiled at his crack agent.
"Agent Mulder, there is to be no discussion. She will joining
you tomorrow at this site. However, she is not to be in any situation
which will pose a serious risk. Her name is Niki Chandler and I will
bring her in to meet you both." At this, he rose and left the room.
Mulder and Scully glanced at each other.
"Well, I wonder what they're not telling us this time" he said with

a wry grin. Scully stare at him but was lost in thought.
"Mulder, there is of course, more than meets the eye here, but how
do we find out what?"
As he was about to reply, the door opened and Skinner entered with

his guest. The two agents turned around and Mulder felt a jolt course

through his body which nearly knocked him over.
Niki Chandler was not so much beautiful as tremendously
appealing, and Mulder thought she was one of the sexiest women he had
ever seen. She was small but athletically built, with large blue eyes
and a riotous mass of dark curls spilling onto her shoulders.
Sensuality and femininity just reeked from her. He didn't trust
himself to speak yet.
"Agents, this is Ms. Chandler. I have been called away on other
business, so I will leave you to get acquainted. Mulder, I will
expect a full report on my desk as soon as you have finished at the
site." With that, Skinner left. Niki turned to the two with whom she
was left standing.
"Ms. Chandler, I'm Agent Dana Scully and this is my partner,
Agent Fox Mulder." Niki extended her hand to Scully and smiled; she
was really quite attractive. Then, she turned her full gaze to
Mulder. She gave him an amused grin, as if she could read his
confusion.
"Am I in Heaven?" she said teasingly as she shook his hand.
Scully's eyes opened wide as Mulder gave her a sour look. As he took
her hand, Mulder was aware of little electric shocks throughout his
body. What is wrong with me? he thought. She's just a woman!
"It's nice to meet you, Ms. Chandler," he said, "but I feel you

should know Agent Scully and I aren't used to working with anyone
else. We face a lot of dangerous situations."
"Yes, Agent Mulder," she replied. Her voice was silky.
"Skinner has informed me of the risks and my limitations." She
grinned impishly and Mulder thought he would choke if he didn't cough.
"But, then, I never function well with limits." She turned to leave
the room and the two agents' eyes met. Both registered worry and
irritation, but Scully also noticed something more in Mulder's eyes.
Poor Fox, she thought; this is not the first time a woman with whom
they worked or met was taken in by his boyish good looks and quiet
charm. But, he never got used to it on the job. Well, Ms. Chandler
would prove to be quite a challenge, she thought.
Niki turned and said, "I will need a ride back to my hotel.
Agent Mulder, can you help me out?" Scully nearly chuckled out loud
at the trapped animal look on her partner's face, but she looked down
and told Mulder to go ahead without her. Mulder gave her a frustrated

look and escorted Niki out the door. The ride home was uneventful,
except for the occasional questions Niki asked about the assignment
and Mulder himself.

After Agent Mulder dropped her off, Niki leaned against the door
and caught her breath. My God! What had she stumbled on! She
could not ever remember being so turned on by a man in such a
short time. But, he was quiet and stingy about himself. She had
tried to ask him some personal things as they drove, but he
side-stepped them all, saying he preferred to keep things on a
professional level. And she wondered about his partner, Dana Scully.
She was a gorgeous redhead and Niki pondered their relationship,
although she had heard from others that it was purely platonic. Well,
she would have plenty of time to find out, she thought, since they
would all be together in Florida for a while.....

Fox Mulder let himself into his apartment and took a deep
breath. Shit! What was he getting into here? And why had he reacted
to this woman this way? It was going to be damn hard concentrating
on this assignment with her beside him constantly, especially the
way she had obviously set her trap for him.  Trap---what an analogy;
she did seem like a predator where he was concerned. Fox got
undressed and lay down on the bed. He was so tired.....

Morning dawned bright and clear. The rang early and it was
Scully, letting him know she would be picking him up in half hour,
then they would get Niki. Fox shook himself awake, having been
troubled all night by strange dreams. These alternated between erotic
images of Niki Chandler and nightmares about why she was on this case
at all. Damn Skinner and the rest of them! Why couldn't they be up
front about things!

Scully arrived right on time and Niki was also ready. During the
ride to the airport and then on the plane, things were fairly even and
quiet. Mulder read through the file on the Florida sightings and
Scully tried to give Niki an overview of their plans. When they
finally landed in Seascape, they found a charming little town near the
ocean, with small hotels and a small shopping area. After they had
checked in, they made contact with the police to get details. They
were told that five sightings had taken place, and that the mayor was
quite shaken after his experience. They next met with the major,
after dropping Niki off, much to her dislike.

"How do you do, Agents," the mayor said, when they were seated in
his office. "I am Mayor Petrie. I don't mind telling you, I am very
unnerved by all of this."
"I understand, sir," Mulder said, keeping his voice low and calm.
This man was obviously very uncomfortable and frightened. "Can you
just tell us what you saw?" After the mayor gave his account,. which
was all too familiar, they excused themselves and went for coffee to
discuss things.
"What do you think, Scully?" Fox asked, after their coffee came.
"Well, he certainly is a credible witness," she answered
carefully. "But, Mulder, what about a sighting in daylight? Isn't
that a bit odd?"
Her partner nodded but said that he had heard of a few instances
where this occurred, usually in a small deserted town like Seascape.
The fact that it was so close to the Space Center made it more
logical, with all that went on there. Scully then asked him about Niki
being there.
"You're very uncomfortable with this, aren't you, Mulder?"
"Scully, you know how I feel about working with anyone else.
There is something weird about this whole scenario. See if you can
dig up anything, will you?" Scully nodded.
"I have a friend in Arizona, near where Niki is from. Perhaps he
can find out something for me." He nodded and they drove back. They
decided to investigate the site that evening, but felt it wouldn't be
safe for Niki until they had secured the area or at least checked it
out.
When they got back to the hotel, the sat down with Niki and laid
it out to her.
"No dice!" she stated firmly. "I was sent here to do a job and I
am going to do it." She faced Mulder squarely, but spoke to them
both. "I am a damn good photographer and I don't spook easily."
Mulder winced at the reminder of his nickname; Scully smiled.
"Niki, we have orders from Skinner to make sure you are safe.
Those stand," she told the slim brunette. Mulder didn't say much; he
was too uncomfortable at the way her presence was affecting him.
Scully turned to him for support, found him curiously flushed, and
avoiding eye contact. She rolled her eyes; oh brother! This is going
to be a fun few days......she returned her gaze to Niki, who was
staring at Mulder with open admiration.
"Well, I suggest we all get some rest before this evening" Scully

stated. "And, Niki, as soon as we have secured the area, you can take
your photos." This done, she turned to leave for her room. Mulder
started off too, not making much eye contact still. Niki grabbed his
arm; his heart pounded. She turned to face him, her huge blue eyes
boring into his green ones.
"Please, don't make me stay behind?" she wheedled. Her
fingertips grazed his upper arm, as he had removed his jacket due to
the humidity. Fox drew in his breath at her touch; he needed a cold
shower! As he answered her, he took in her spectacular shape and
wondered what she would look like unclothed. Pulling himself
together, he shrugged off her hand and said,
"Ms. Chandler, AD Skinner's orders stand. I'm sorry."
"Please call me Niki? I understand, Agent Mulder," she replied
softly. But, something in her tone made him uneasy. She was giving
in too fast. He look at her and she stared back innocently, but ran
her tongue over her lips. Fox felt heat infuse him and turned
abruptly to go. He heard Niki laughing as he departed.

Scully fell asleep instantly, being exhausted from the trip. Her
last wakeful thought was of their investigation tonight and how
difficult it was going to be keeping Niki Chandler out of their hair
and off her partner! Well, that's Mulder's problem, she snorted, and
fell asleep.

Mulder took his cold shower and fell onto the bed, clad only in
his typical boxers. God it was hot here! He tossed and turned,
thinking he should get up, check the doors, and get some rest, but he
couldn't bring himself to move. He kept picturing Niki Chandler's big
blue eyes and her small, muscular frame as she stood her ground about
the site tonight. He had always admired strong women, like Dana and
others he knew, but this physical aggressiveness of this woman
frightened him. But, this was mostly due to his reaction to her and
he was certain she knew about that. He drifted off into a troubled
sleep.

Fox awoke with a heavy feeling. Startled, he sat up and found
himself face-to-face with Niki! She sat on the bed next to him, clad
only in shorts and crop top. Her feet were bare and he could not keep
himself from staring
"What the hell are you doing in here?" he managed to croak out,
still groggy from sleep. How did you get in?"
"The door was open," she said, gazing seriously at him. God, he
was gorgeous! She could hardly keep her heart from pounding, as she
stared at his naked chest. She got up and strolled around the room.
"Fox Mulder; how aptly named you are....she purred. Mulder swallowed
hard and looked away.
"Niki, you need to go back to your room; I have to get ready for
tonight," he said gruffly.
"Oh, I'm going to get ready too," she grinned, "because I'm going

with you."
"Over our dead bodies," Fox retorted. "You aren't going
anywhere!"
"Fox, please?" she begged. "This is such a good chance for me to

get natural shots and I don't want to miss it. Please?" Mulder
couldn't even look at her. Her top had pulled up as she leaned over
and her adorable face was begging, but playful too, as if she knew
exactly her effect on him. This made him more determined than ever to
keep control of the situation and her. And he didn't like her use of
his first name, but was strangely powerless to correct her.
"Niki, this discussion is over. Goodbye." With that, he turned
his back on her, giving her a nice view of his muscles. With the
flash of an eye, she jumped up and Fox found himself flat on his
stomach, pinned under her small but strong body.
"Oh no, this discussion is not over!" she cried mischievously.
"Niki, I don't have time for games," Fox said irritably. "Get
off; you are NOT going and this isn't going to change things."
"Oh, yes it is," Niki whispered softly into his ear, sending
shivers all through him.
"Really?" he replied, trying to get control and failing
miserably.
"And what do you base that conclusion on?" What was wrong with
him? Why didn't he just throw her off?
Niki smiled wickedly. "That depends, Agent Mulder," she
whispered again.
"On what?" Fox asked, almost afraid to speak but highly agitated
with the whole situation. Besides his obvious attraction, he
seriously disliked being bested by a small female and also hated
interference with his work, which came before anything except when it
came to this maddening woman.
"On how much torture you can take," Niki replied and promptly dug
her fingertips into his ribs, tickling him mercilessly. Already super
sensitive to her nearness, and very nervous, Fox was caught totally
off guard and began squirming and laughing out loud. Try as he might,
he could not get away from her poking fingers.
"Cut it out, Niki!" he protested, trying to get her off him,
unable to stop squirming or laughing.
"Are you going to let me go?" she demanded, poking his ribs some
more. Fox laughed again and noticed much to his dismay, he was
getting aroused by this, and the feel of her body on him, despite the
fact that he couldn't stand being tickled. He had to stop this or he
was going to lose all control. And her touch was almost more than he
could take.
"Niki, please, stop!" he barely got out from his laugher. "All
right, fine, whatever. Just stop!"
She immediately released him, but noticed his erection which he
tried valiantly to hide. She raised her eyes to meet his with a
knowing and smug grin, while he miserably tried to look away. Just
then, a knock sounded on his door.
"Mulder? It's Scully; are you almost ready?" Fox quickly got
himself together and threw his clothes on, ignoring the amused look on
Niki's face. When he was dressed, he started toward the door.
"Remember our deal," Niki said softly. He merely glared at her
and they exited the room. Scully watched incredulously as Niki said
she would grab her camera and be with them in a minute.
"How come she's going?" Scully asked, staring at the two of them.

Niki gave her an innocent look.
"Agent Scully, did you know Agent Mulder is really ticklish?" she

asked, ignoring the furious look Mulder gave her. Then, she sauntered

off to get her camera. Scully, eyebrows raised and eyes wide with
amusement, turned to Mulder.
"She tickled you into submission, Mulder? Isn't that stuff best
left on the Internet?"
Fox clenched his teeth. "Not one more word, Scully," he hissed.
Dana shrugged her small shoulders at him. "Kootchy Koo, Mulder,"
she deadpanned and walked toward the car, as Niki joined them. Mulder

gave Niki a murderous stare, which she returned with an impish grin.
As they drove, with Mulder at the wheel, they lectured Niki on the
do's and don'ts of this evening. When they arrived at the site,
everyone was primed for something.
There was evidence of some type of abnormal activity, of that
they were sure. As they searched, Mulder was glad of something to
take his mind off Niki, as she hovered near them snapping shots here
and there. Niki also was having trouble concentrating, visualizing
Mulder's half naked body on that bed......Scully, meanwhile, busied
herself with collecting samples to look at under the microscope, but
kept glancing at her partner. The sexual tension between him and Niki
was tangible and she almost felt pity for him, for his discomfort.
But, he knew he could talk to her, if only he would; what a
frustrating person! Lord knows, she had confided in him many times in
the past. Well, it was his problem, she told herself for the tenth
time in two days. A few times, she glanced over at Niki, still
curious at her presence here, and thought she saw the young woman's
hand trembling on her camera, her usual flip composure slipping
somewhat. Scully couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't
right and resolved to contact her friend in Arizona tomorrow.
Finally, they finished up and went back to the hotel.
After saying their goodnights, Mulder not meeting either woman's
eyes, Scully found herself really wondering about Niki Chandler.
That her partner was interested, she was sure. But, why was this
woman here? Just then, her phone rang.
"Scully." It was AD Skinner, asking about their progress. She
gave him a rundown and he told her to begin working on the samples. He
then told her there was another sighting reported, this time about 100
miles from where they were. He directed her to keep working on her
samples and have Mulder and Niki drive up to investigate. Scully hung
up, chuckling to herself about this new predicament. Then, she went
to tell Mulder.
"No, I can't do that Scully," he said firmly, when she told him a
few moments later. "You have gotta come with me or you take her."
"Mulder, you know I have to stay here and work with these slides.

What on earth is the matter with you?"
"Scully, you've seen the way she is; she'll devour me." Scully
quickly looked up and saw a smile playing around his full lips, but
there was concern too. But, there was work to be done and she
couldn't play mother to Fox Mulder now.
"Mulder, you've faced worse creatures than Niki Chandler. I'm
sure you can handle one small photographer."
"Scully, please don't do this?" Mulder pleaded, but he knew she
was right. "Fine, whatever-"his classic phrase lately. "We'll leave
early to get a full day in. We'll be back by dinnertime."
Resolutely, he called Niki's room to tell her the news. Scully
smirked at him and said she would see them tomorrow. When she
returned to her room, she was surprised to find Niki at her door.
"Niki?" Scully said, opening her door for them.
     "Dana, can we talk?" the dark-haired woman asked.  Scully smiled;

no one had actually given her permission to use their first names, but

here she was doing it anyway. What was it about this young woman
that got under people's skin? She had certainly invaded Mulder's!
"What did you want to talk about, Niki?" she asked.
"Well..." Niki hesitated, unsure of herself for the first time in
a long while. "Agent Mulder...he's so closed about himself." Scully
eyed her intently.
"Niki, Mulder is my partner and my friend. I can't divulge any
personal information about him; you know that."
"I know, Dana. You two have worked together a long time....you
must be very close......" Niki stopped, slightly flushed. Scully
smiled.
"Niki, Mulder and I are very close, as friends. We were never
lovers
and there is nothing romantic between us. Is that what you wanted to
know?" Niki sighed.
"Yes, thank you. Dana, I....I have never had a man affect me
like this. It's kind of a trip!"
Scully smiled again at this impossibly charming woman. Suddenly,

she became serious.
"Niki, do you know why you were assigned to this case with us?"
Niki looked inquiringly at her and began to talk. Scully's eyes
widened as Niki spoke.

Fox heard a tapping at his door. Oh no, he thought not Niki! He

couldn't face her again right now, couldn't trust his self-control at
this point. But, upon asking, he was relieved to find Scully.
"What's up, Scully?" he asked her, when he saw the look on her
face. She sat down and proceeded to tell him what Niki had told her.
"Damn them!" Mulder swore. "They knew she had seen something at
one of her shoots, and that it caused her amnesia? Now they want to
see if they can jar her memory, find out what she saw. What a shitty
trick!" He was furious, Scully could tell. She wasn't too thrilled
herself.
"Mulder, Niki said she passed out and came to in a hospital,
remembering nothing. Please be careful on this venture? I'm worried
for both of you."
"This stinks, Scully," he said angrily. "We are at risk here and
so is Niki. Who knows what she saw? She is a tough cookie; something
must have really scared her."
"I know, Mulder. This is the part of our job I hate. Please be
careful?" Her concern was evident and Mulder appreciated her for it.

He loved working with Scully for that reason, among others. He agreed

and they went to bed, hearts heavy.

LOVE AT FIRST SHOT
Author---Teall1@aol.com

Part II

Their things were loaded in the car and they headed out. As
they drove, Fox was conscious every minute of the beautiful woman
beside him and also of the burden put upon him and Scully by the
bureau. Niki looked at him through the corners of her blue eyes. His
profile was something to behold----soulful eyes, prominent, strong
nose, and Cupid's Bow mouth----her stomach was turning to butterflies.
Get hold of yourself, Niki! She was not used to being rejected or
having to beg for a man's attention, yet this man affected her like no
other she had met. Impulsively, the turned to him, startling him with
her voice.
"Fox, I mean, Mulder....."she began. He glanced briefly at her.
"Sorry, Dana told me you don't like anyone to use your first name and
I keep doing it." He waved her concern away; what difference did it
make now? "Anyway, I-I just wanted to apologize for the way I made
you let me go on that photo shoot last night. I know it was
embarrassing for you."
He turned to her momentarily. "Please don't ever bring that up
again," he said curtly.
She smiled. "Okay. I just wanted to say I was sorry." There
was a heavy silence.
"Niki, Scully told me about your experience with the UFO. Do you
have any idea what Skinner wants from you here?"
She smiled wryly. "I would guess to jog my mind, so I can
remember what I saw."
     "What did you see?"
She turned to face him. "I don't remember, honestly. There was
a white light, very bright, then I blacked out. When I came to in the

hospital, I remembered nothing. I still don't." Mulder frowned but
said nothing more. Eventually, they came to the designated site,
which was a field where stood an old abandoned house. As they
unpacked the gear, they were strangely silent. Each had their own
thoughts. Oh boy-Niki smiled---if Fox could read my mind, he would be
blushing for sure! As they worked, unpacking and selecting what they
would need, she managed to brush against him a few times. He
stiffened and backed away.
"Do I make you nervous, Agent Mulder?" she asked mischievously.
He turned toward her, but continued his preparations.
"Look, Niki, we have a lot to do here. Let's keep it strictly
professional, ok? Her little pink tongue came out moistening her lips

as she stepped toward him. He stood up towering over her. "Just stay

away from me, all right?" She finally nodded and they went toward the

site. Fox was shaking but was determined not to let her know. He
could not afford to drop his guard at all here, especially when they
were alone. Finally, they approached the sighting area. Again, there
were small signs but nothing much. However, these were different than
the others in Florida; they had different substances and as Fox
gathered them and Niki shot her photos, it occurred to him that this
may be a totally unrelated sighting to the others.
As they worked, Niki also felt strange. She was slightly cold,
and her skin felt prickly. Chalking it up to the nearness of Fox
Mulder, she went on. Finally, they were finished. It had grown
darker then and when they approached the car, both were ready to
leave. Fox got in and attempted to start the motor, but it wouldn't
catch. How strange, he thought. After checking everything and
working over it, it became clear it was totally dead. An eerie
sensation came over him, but he shrugged it off. Finally, he called
Scully and told her the car was dead and that they were stuck.
"Do you want me to come and get you?" she asked, concerned. He
then told her that it was silly and probably risky for her to come
since it was near nightfall and pretty deserted there. He assured her
they could stay in the old house and she could come for them tomorrow.
When he informed Niki about their situation, he avoided her eyes which
were twinkling and sparkling with excitement. They locked the
equipment in the trunk except for their evidence, and trudged up to
the house.
As they got ready for the night, Fox was keenly aware of his
precarious situation and of Niki's temptation for him. She took the
bathroom first and was in there for a long time. This is one time
he's not going to get away so easily, Niki thought. He is in for
quite a night! Fox was growing impatient and tired. There was only
one bedroom but there was a comfortable couch, and he was eager for
sleep and this ordeal to be over. Soon, he grew irritable and knocked
on the bathroom door.
"I'm finished," Niki called softly. "You can come in." Without
thinking, Fox pushed open the door and stopped abruptly, mentally
kicking himself. Niki stood there, totally nude with every lush curve
revealed to him. His breath caught in his throat and he felt
strangulated, but was not going to give in. Damn her! he thought.
Regaining some of his composure, he looked her in the eyes.
"Would you mind putting something on, please?" he said quietly.
He went into the bathroom and closed the door, wiping sweat from his
brow, hearing her tinkling laughter behind him. "It's going to be a
long night," he said aloud.

They decided to turn in for the night. They had eaten a late
enough lunch to hold them over and frankly, the sexual tension was so
great, neither was hungry for food. Niki had tried all night to
seduce Fox, with glances, nuances, etc. but to no avail. She was
frustrated and so was he, but he knew he had to keep his wits about
him tonight. Something was strange about this place, the car dying,
the unusual markings at this site. Niki lay in bed, as Fox slept on
the couch, and also felt odd. Something about the day's work....she
couldn't quite name it.....anticipation.....fear? Slowly, she drifted
off to sleep, feeling triggered and on edge.

Niki seemed to wake, but she was really dreaming, or was she?
She was in a cold woods, camera poised. Something loomed over her.
Frozen with fear, she looked up....and up...and up. A horrible face,
nothing human, glowing in the light, reaching for her. She tried to
get up, to get away. She couldn't move. Help me! Help me! If only
she could scream.
Fox awoke with a start when the first screams began. Panicking,
he ran into the room where Niki was sleeping and found her sitting in
bed, eyes open, but staring in a trance-like condition. She screamed
in terror and keened, finally crying out.... "Help me-----Mommy!" and
was shivering all over. Without thought, Fox ran to her and cradled
her. "Mommy!" she cried again, completely horrified and curled into a
fetal position.
"Oh, God," Fox muttered, holding her close and tight. She
finally stared up at him. "Niki? It's me, Fox....Niki!" When she at
last focused on his face, she began to cry softly. Fox was completely
shaken and the feel of her clutching him and sobbing began to get to
him. He held her tightly and she lifted her tear-stained face,
staring into his eyes. Unbidden, thoughts of her nude body
silhouetted in the bathroom light returned and he began to tremble
also. Niki must have sensed a change in him, because she raised her
face to his. When she stared into his beautiful green eyes, now
filled with compassion and something else---desire---she was lost. It
must have shown in her face also, because he suddenly groaned and
pulled her to him, kissing her fiercely.
Fox's head was swimming and he heard a low rushing in his ears.
All thoughts of anything else were gone, as he kissed and caressed
this woman he had wanted since he first laid eyes on her. Niki molded
herself to him, her fear gone, glorying in her wish come true. As
they kissed, she ran her hands over Fox's bare chest. She heard his
quick intake of breath and smiled to see his reaction. She continued
to explore his wonderful body with her hands and mouth, pushing him
back onto the bed, kissing and licking his neck and tracing her
fingers over his body. Fox was having difficulty lying still under
her hands and lips, but wanted her to proceed at her own pace.
Finally, as she made her way down his stomach to his boxers, he
thought he couldn't take one more minute of this agony/ecstasy.
His breathing became ragged panting. She grasped him through his
boxers and then slipped them off, keeping hold of him. When Fox felt
her soft mouth on his swollen member, his moans could not be
contained.
Suddenly, he rolled over and laid on top of her. As he undressed
her slowly, his lips trailed everywhere his hands worked. Niki was on
fire everywhere he touched her. Oh God, could she be falling in love
with this man? That was not like her! But, as he nibbled at her
breasts and traced her lower body with his fingertips, all sane
thoughts left her. He was driving her wild and her response was
driving him crazy. At last, he worked his way down to her pleasure
core and as he kissed her there, she lost all sanity. Clutching at
his thick dark hair, she pulled him up onto and into her, where they
reached the culmination of satisfaction nearly together. As her cries
escaped her, Fox could hold out no longer, and he exploded in her with
a hoarse cry of his own. Exhausted, they lay wrapped in each
other's arms. Niki closed her eyes and fell into a deep sleep, Fox's
strong arms around her.

Upon waking in the morning, Fox opened his eyes to find Niki
staring down at him. He actually smiled but also blushed at the
undisguised hunger in her face.
"Good morning," she whispered in his ear. Her lips sent tingles
down his spine, but he needed to talk to her first.
"Niki," he began, taking her hands in his, "what happened last
night?"
Her face clouded over. "Fox, I remembered. I remembered what
happened, what I saw. Skinner got his wish," she finished
sarcastically. As they talked, her story came out and Fox made some
notes. She pulled the note pad out of his hands and said,
"Enough; it's time for breakfast." He looked up at her
passion-filled eyes and was lost all over again. This time, their
love-making was sweet and not urgent. But, as they explored each
other all over again, their excitement was no less. Fox loved the
feel of her silky skin and she in turn, loved the feel of his sinewy,
muscled body. As he entered her for the second time in this crazy 24
hours, she felt more deeply satisfied and happy
than she ever thought possible.
"Fox," she said, when they were relaxing again, "I want you to
know I have never felt like this about anyone before. Oh there were
guys, but nothing ever of this depth. But, I suppose in your line of
work, you have plenty of women throwing themselves at you." He looked
at her with that little-boy pout and her heart lurched.
"Niki, I haven't had a relationship in a very long time," he
began. Slowly. He told her the story of Samantha and his obsession
with his work, how he fought any romantic attachments which might get
in the way, what he was striving for. "You know, I am beginning to
believe that this site is truly different than the others. And I am
beginning to understand why."

LOVE AT FIRST SHOT
Author--- Teall1@aol.com

Part III

When Scully arrived to pick them up, she knew at once something
had changed between them but said nothing. As they drove, Mulder told
her about the samples being different and the weird reaction Niki had
that night, leaving out the personal details. When they arrived back
after stopping to eat, before reporting to Skinner, Scully ran some
quick tests on the new samples. She confirmed Mulder's suspicions.
He frowned and both women knew what that meant. Before they could
stop him, he strode angrily down to Skinner's office and threw open
the door.
"Ah, Agent Mulder," Skinner greeted him. "I was just going to
send for you and Scully. What did you find out in Florida?"
"I think you know, sir," he said, barely keeping his voice calm.
Skinner took one look at him and knew that he knew everything. "What
did you think you were proving, sir? Why didn't you level with Scully

and me, not to mention putting Niki at risk! You knew those sightings

were a setup down there, but you hoped it would trigger not only a
memory but a connection to the real sighting she found. You hoped it
would bring them back to where she was. Well, it worked, Sir. It
worked great! You almost lost Niki in the bargain!" Fox was shaking,
he was so angry. Skinner faced him head on.
"Agent Mulder, sit down," he said evenly. "You're right; we did
set that up. But, you don't understand.....we needed that
information, needed that connection. There was another sighting here
in D.C. And Niki is the key." He looked up. Niki and Scully were
standing in the doorway. They had heard everything. Skinner
continued. "And now that they have made contact with her at that old
house, we need her to do it once more. We need to try to communicate,
or capture one of them. Niki is integral to that." As the
implication of what he was suggesting hit, Fox stood up.
"No!" he shouted. Both women looked up, startled. They sat
down, Niki next to him. "I won't allow this! She has been through
enough danger." Skinner looked patiently at Mulder, sensing the
involvement between these two, and chose his words carefully.
"Agent Mulder, we believe these 'beings' have returned to stop
Ms. Chandler from witnessing their existence. If this is true, she
can lure them out and we can verify, if nothing else. It will be
perfectly safe; she won't be in any direct contact." He turned to
Niki. "This is vital to us."
Niki looked at Scully and Mulder. "Please," she said, "I want to
do this; I need to do it. The nightmares will just return until I
face it. And now that I've remembered most of it, I need to follow it
to conclusion." Scully opened her mouth to say something, but sense
this was between her partner and the woman he obviously cared for now.
Finally, after a long silence, Mulder dropped his intense glare.
"Niki, you really want this?" he asked. When she nodded, her
large blue eyes intent on his face, he acquiesced. "But I want every
precaution taken!" As they left to formalize plans, Scully held
Mulder back, her hand on his arm. He turned to look at her and met
her level and deep look.
"What is she to you, Mulder?" Scully asked gently.
He drew a deep breath. "I don't know," he replied softly, "but
whatever it is, I can't lose it again...." As he went off to join the
others, Scully stared after him intently. A worry frown on her pretty
face.

Part IV

It was nightfall, three days later. Mulder, Scully, Skinner, and
Niki, plus camera equipment, etc were ready. For the past few days,
Mulder had spent every minute he could with Niki. He hadn't exactly
put words to the feelings he had for her, but he was certain she knew
and felt the same. Niki was very open about her feelings for him.
At the agency, they had been tracking frequencies and signals
during this time and had picked up enough to suspect this was the
night. The plan was for Niki to act as bait and if they appeared, to
retreat to cover while they at least verified the existence of
whatever it was. They were operating with as much of a scaled-down
crew as possible, and as many safety cautions as could be thought of.
They were able to pinpoint the approximate location from the frequency
signals, or so they hoped. As they approached the designated area,
Mulder became nervous and paced back and forth. He hovered over Niki,
until Scully finally drew him away.
"Mulder, it will be all right. Come here and wait with me."
They were now ready. Everyone was tense, on edge. As they made their
way to the clearing, they hid the cameras and operators plus whoever
else didn't need to be seen. Everyone was alert. Finally, Niki
stepped out into the clearing. She remained motionless for a few
minutes and then, a curious humming noise was heard. Suddenly,
bright lights filled the sky! Niki moved back into safety as she had
been instructed, and Fox let out the breath he had been holding.
Everyone was stunned and there was a hush, as the light circled above.
Just when the silence was nearly unbearable and the cameras were
rolling, Niki suddenly tensed and ran back out into the clearing.
"Niki!" Fox yelled, on his feet instantly.
"Get back!" Scully also cried. Niki seemed oblivious to their
calls and kept moving. Suddenly. The lights began to recede and Niki
stopped, gazed back at them with a look of surprise, grabbed her
chest, and collapsed.
"Oh, God!" Fox cried hoarsely, as he reached her prone figure.
Scully and Skinner were right behind him. "Niki!" Fox was beside
himself, until Skinner pulled him out of the way, so Scully could
examine and tend to her. After a few tense moments, Scully looked up
and the misery in her eyes was all Fox needed to see. With a growl,
he lunged at Skinner and attempted to strangle him. The rest was a
blur, with Fox being pulled off and returning to take Niki in his arm,
bent over her like a hurt animal.

It was the next morning and Scully arrived early at work, fearing
the worst for her partner. She found that he had not checked in yet
and went to Skinner's office. He seemed to be expecting her.
"Come in, Agent Scully," he said quietly. He looked very tired
and miserable himself. "He didn't come in today. We're flying Niki's
body home to her family. Mulder stayed with her most of the night,
then disappeared." Scully said nothing, only stared at him.
"Everyone is feeling horrible, Agent Scully. We never expected
anything like this to happen, but you know the agency comes first."
"Yes sir," she said softly. "Sir?"
Skinner looked up and saw the question in her eyes. "Go on,
Scully. Find him, and take care of him." She nodded and hurriedly
left. She drove straight to his apartment. When she knocked on the
door, there was no answer.
"Mulder? Mulder, it's me." Nothing. After trying again. She
got out her key and let herself in.
It was very dark; she could barely make out things. After
standing for a few minutes, she could see his lanky form, slumped on
the sofa. She went over to him.
"Mulder," she said quietly. He didn't move or respond. Scully
was unnerved by his behavior and sat down next to him. They sat like
that for a few moments, not touching or speaking. Finally, she
ventured her hand toward his and he allowed her to hold his hand, but
kept facing away from her. He uttered only three words, in a low dead
voice, but filled with pain.
     "It hurts, Scully...."
"I know," she whispered. He finally turned toward her and broke
down, falling limply against her. As he sobbed in her lap and she
held him tightly, they both knew he would eventually get through this.
But her heart broke for this iron-strong man who was aching inside,
and she knew she would stay with him as long as he needed her. After
all, a friendship like theirs doesn't often come twice in a lifetime.

AFTERMATH By .....
Teall1@aol.com

Agent Dana Scully leaned back in her chair and stretched. It had
been a long day, catching up on all the reports she'd needed to write and
proofing them again and again. As she returned to typing position, she
glanced over at Mulder's desk. Her partner sat apparently deep in thought,
but she knew better.
It had been three months since the death of Niki Chandler, the
female photographer with whom Mulder had been deeply involved. Her
end had come as a result of an XFile in which she had been intimately
entangled. Mulder rarely ever became personally involved with a woman
while they worked, and this was so complex an attraction, Scully feared
Mulder would not come to himself for quite some time.
"You ok, Mulder?" she asked gently, as he blinked and tried to
return to his work.
"Fine," he answered shortly. Scully sighed; they had shared a
moment, when she had found him dazed and torn to pieces emotionally at
his apartment the morning after Niki had died in the UFO fiasco. They
had been tight; Mulder cried his anguish to her and she had comforted him
in the closeness of their personal and professional bond. It had taken a
while, but he had finally returned to work. But, Mulder had been quiet
and had a desperate quality to him since that time.....

Mulder sat at his desk, lost in thought. Why did people die whom he
cared about? Was he jinxed? First Samantha--well perhaps not dead but
lost to him all the same--, his father, Scully's sister (he felt for Scully's
pain), and now Niki. Shaking his head, he looked over at Scully. She
smiled at him, a gentle understanding smile. For a moment, his heart
jumped at that sight, but he stilled it quickly. Easy Fox, he said, you can't
afford to care about anyone too much now, even as a friend. A
friend......Scully was all that to him and much more. How much more,
he'd just come to realize lately. Even though he had been falling in love
with Niki, there hadn't been enough time to cement their relationship
before she was so cruelly taken from him. When he thought of the one
person who could comfort him, stimulate him intellectually, and provide
endless companionship, it was Dana Scully who came to mind......

"Scully, what're you doin' for dinner tonight?" he asked
impulsively. She looked up quizzically.
    "I don't know , Mulder," she replied honestly. "I guess I thought I'd
grab a sandwich and hit the sack early. I'm so tired of all this paperwork."
She look directly at him. "Why?"
"Nothing," he said slowly, "I just felt like some company tonight
and thought we might get some dinner together." Scully smiled again at
him.....and then she nodded.
"Ok, you're on!" she suddenly stated and stood up, smoothing her
skirt. Mulder grinned and surprised himself. They decided to go to a small
cafe where they could also talk. As they sat down and ordered their meal,
Scully stared at him.
"What's up, Mulder?" she asked softly. "You seem to have
something on your mind." She knew her partner by now.....the silent
ruminations were indications of something deeper going on.
"I was just feeling kind of down," he admitted, again new for him.
"Just thinking about this past year in the agency and how much we've both
been through." He leaned closer to her across the table. "Scully, I just
wanted to say....I mean, I wanted to tell you...."he stopped, flustered. "I
....uh....appreciate all your support lately." Is that what he wanted to say?
Hell no! What did he want to say to her?
Scully reached out and touched his hand gently. "Mulder, we've
shared a lot these past two years. I know you'd have done the same for
me--you have." As she looked into his face, Scully's breath caught. He
looked very appealing sitting there, fumbling around to say whatever it
was he needed to tell her. Damn, that conversation with Niki about us just
being friends was beginning to haunt her. Scully had not been that close to
any involvement Mulder had before, and she was somewhat unnerved by
it.
"Well, we better get going; I'm falling asleep in my coffee," she
said suddenly, to break the mood which was getting to her. "Do you mind
if we go?" He nodded and seemed reluctant to get up, but did. During the
drive, he stared straight ahead. The day had been long and Dana was
exhausted. As they drove back to the agency to get her car, she leaned
back on the seat and nodded off.
Mulder looked over at her as she slept, her head slightly leaning
toward him, her fiery red hair spilled onto her shoulders. Something
moved inside of him. What the hell was happening to him? He shook
himself out of it as they pulled up to her car.

"Scully? We're here," he said quietly, as she opened her eyes
slowly. She pulled herself together and got out. "Thanks for the
company," he said and they parted ways. As they drove home, each going
their separate ways, Mulder tried to think about what his feelings were
tonight. He had definitely been falling fast for Niki; whatever it was about
her that got to him, it had hit hard. But, there was another quality there;
he felt protective toward her, and her dark beauty had reminded him of his
sister. As he drove, another face swam before him. Large, deep eyes, full
lips, and red hair.......his partner, Dana Scully. It hit him like a ton of
bricks! She had always been there for him, through every crisis, through
every danger. He had helped save her life, she had saved his. Their bond
went so deep, he couldn't even trace the end of it. But, what was he
feeling? Gratitude? Affection? And, God help him, desire......Mulder tried
to rid himself of these thoughts. This was a rebound. Once Niki had
tapped into his need for a woman in his life, he now wanted it again.
Scully was just comfortable, filled his desire for companionship. He tried
to tell himself that was all and as he pulled into his apartment, he thought
he had himself convinced.

Scully was very tired and had fallen into a deep sleep. Something
woke her, but she wasn't sure what. A tapping at the door.....grabbing her
gun, she tiptoed to the peep hole and looked out. Mulder? A very
disheveled Mulder.....
"Mulder?" she called, "what's wrong? It's so late." He just stood
there, looking down at his shoes. Worried, she opened her door and pulled
him inside. "What is it? What's going on?" she asked again.
"Scully, I...." he stopped mid sentence and stared at her. She looked
down at herself and blushed. She had been warm and slept in her panties
and a little t-shirt. She was so comfortable with Mulder, when she had
seen who was at her door and his condition, she hadn't given a thought to
what she had, or didn't have, on. As she started to go put something else
on, she caught a glimpse of his eyes. Green, burning, intense......she felt
a bit faint. It must be the heat, she thought; it's only Mulder!
"Come in; I'll be right back. Want some coffee or something?" she
said, as she backed away. He shook his head, but put his hand on her arm
to stop her. She looked back into his eyes and her whole being was
shaken. What in God's name was happening here, she thought--panicking.
Mulder kept his grip on her arm and kept staring at her. "Mulder, you're
scaring me."
He relaxed but didn't let go of her.
"Sorry, I don't know what came over me." She glanced down at his
hand on her arm and he slowly let go. "It's no big deal; I'm going now.
Get some sleep." To her own surprise, Scully stopped him.
"Mulder, you don't have to leave. I'm up anyway." Her smile took
the edge off her words. "Come on, sit down and talk to me. I'll be right
back."
He lowered his long frame to her couch. He tried not to look at her,
but she saw his gaze wandering to her scantily clad figure and excused
herself to slip on a robe. When she returned, he had his head in his hands.
"Ok, give it up, Mulder. Talk to me." Scully sat down next to him
but didn't touch him at all. Mulder didn't trust himself to speak, because
her sudden nearness was affecting him in ways he didn't dream possible
when it came to his partner. Scully leaned closer, but she missed the look
on Mulder's face until it was too late. Before either of them knew what
was happening, he had moved his face closer to hers and their eyes
locked. Without consciously being aware, their lips met. Scully's intake of
breath was sharp; she instantly pulled away.
"Scully, Oh man, I'm sorry!" Mulder said, totally embarrassed. "I..
..I don't know why I did that." She smiled a wry grin.
"You mean it wasn't my undying charm?" she teased, but her voice
was shaky . The feel of her partner's lips on hers was like electricity
shooting through her body. Somehow, all of the pent up feelings she ever
had for this man came bubbling to the surface, everything she had hidden
or put aside with great effort. She raised her eyes to meet his incredible
green ones again; that was a mistake. After a moment, they were kissing
again.
"Scully...." he whispered against her mouth, "all the time, it's been
you. Through all of the years and experiences, everything, always you...."
"Mulder, please don't say those things?" she murmured back. "Let's
not make this more than it is.....just enjoy the moment?" Always the
level-headed one, she thought, but her head was reeling now. Mulder drew
back and his intense gaze shook her.
"The moment? Is this just for the moment, Scully?" Before she knew
what was happening, he had his hands under her robe and in her little t-
shirt. The feel of her warm and firm breasts sent his senses exploding.
Scully gasped and tried to pull away, but he held her tightly with one arm,
while caressing her with the other. "Scully," he said softly. She tried to
fight off the rising tide of her emotions, but failed.
"Mulder, please......" but she wasn't sure what she was asking for.
He continued to explore her, his tongue everywhere over her face and
neck, his hands roaming under her robe. His breath was coming in short
gasps and all the times she had imagined him like this came racing back,
though she thought she had stashed them away for good. She found herself
kissing back fiercely, tangling her hands in his dark thick hair. She moved
her lips to his neck and nibbled his earlobe, breathing her hot little breath
into his ear. This small caress sent him reeling and he moaned. Scully's
stomach lurched when she heard that and she lost control herself.

Mulder felt himself losing his small hold on his sanity, as Scully
unbuttoned his shirt and kissed his chest and stomach, moving his hands
off her for a bit. He lay back, staring down at her titian hair, as she traced
her fingertips over his nipples and upper body, kissing him everywhere.
Scully continued her explorations, marveling at the smoothness of his
body, undoing his belt buckle and slipping his pants down. For a moment,
she gazed up at him, wondering what the hell she was doing and why. But
she was overwhelmed now and her passion showed in her face. Mulder
felt the butterflies in his body flitting all over. He urged her on, with his
hands on her shoulders and his eyes closing. Scully kissed him on his
lower stomach and finally, kissed him through his boxer shorts. His hands
tightened their pressure on her shoulders and groans escaped him. She
knew what he wanted, but wanted to prolong this pleasure for a bit. She
lifted her head and smirked at him; he returned her smile and suddenly
rolled on top of her.
"Take off your robe," he said abruptly. Without thinking, she
slipped it off. Mulder feasted his eyes on her petite little shape and then
tore off her t-shirt. His mouth and hands launched a maddening attack on
her body, as he drove her wild with his caresses and kisses. While he
played with her breasts, his lips traveled to her navel and stomach, making
her writhe with pleasure. As he removed her panties and kissed her most
sensitive areas, Scully thought she would faint with sensation. Oh, God,
who would have ever thought Fox Mulder could be like this? In all her
dreams and imaginings, she had never felt like this before, on fire.
Mulder knew Scully was fast reaching her limit, but couldn't seem to
stop himself from in taking every inch of her. His tongue and hands were
all over her, and she in turn reached down and took his swelling organ
into her small hands, squeezing just enough to make him completely crazy
with desire. He tried to stifle his moans, but was unable to stop them. As
he began to raise up and enter her, their eyes met. He poised himself for
just a second, a question in his eyes. She answered by pulling him to her,
her cries of pleasure almost more than he could stand. Pausing only long
enough to put on a condom, he drove into her with a force neither of them
could understand but just needed. Mulder thought he would completely
lose it, as Scully tightened her legs around him, her sounds of ecstasy
slipping out. Suddenly, Mulder felt her shudder and went over the edge
himself, his own cries drowning out hers. Scully closed her eyes and held
him tightly, as his climax took him to the point of physically shaking. As
he collapsed onto her, she felt such fulfillment as she had never known
before. She stared down at this gorgeous man lying intimately in her
embrace and marveled at what they had done, at the same time terrified of
it.

Mulder finally stirred, moving off her and closing his eyes as he
rolled onto his back on her floor. They had long since abandoned the sofa
for the carpet.
"Scully?" he finally said. "You ok?" Scully smiled, hearing the
words she had spoken to him earlier in such a different context.
"Yes, Mulder," she replied in a quiet tone. "I.....was just
thinking......about what we've done." She stopped, then went on. "Where
do we go from here?" He looked at her, kind of sheepishly.
"I don't know," he said honestly, "I only know that whatever I've
been looking for through all my search for truth, has caused me to
overlook something right in my face. You, Scully." Her stare penetrated
him.
"Mulder, you shouldn't say those things. You're still in pain from
Niki. You needed someone; I was here." God, she hoped to hell that
wasn't true, but her common sense overcame her, even now. She couldn't
let this become more than it was, but she wanted to hear his reassurance
all the same. "This shouldn't have happened, but it did. So, how do we
deal with it tomorrow and the next day?"
He shook his head and shrugged. "Scully, I did need someone.
Maybe this was a rebound thing from Niki. I can't say right now. I only
know that what just happened here was one of the most incredible
experiences I've ever had. I don't want to lose our friendship. I guess we
should just try to go on from here......" He looked away. Shit! This
wasn't what he meant to say. Scully also was getting upset. She wanted
him to deny that it was anything to do with his grief and need for Niki,
but her logic knew he couldn't. Without warning, tears gathered in her
eyes and began to trickle down. She turned away fast to hide them, but he
had returned his gaze to her and saw.
"Don't, Scully," he pleaded, "please, anything but that. Don't cry.
.." he put his arms around her protectively and she slipped into them
easily. "I don't know what all this means, either. But, I do know that I
feel the first peace now that I've felt in many months. It goes beyond
physical, Scully. You know that."
"Yes, Fox, I do," she said, daring to use his first name. When he
didn't correct her, her heart jumped. He smiled at her then became serious
again.
"Just please, don't ever leave me?" he asked. "Even if we never get
to this point again, I need you more than ever. You know I don't voice my
feelings easily......but, I....care for you, way beyond our partner
relationship." He stopped, floundering. She tried to disentangle herself
from him, but could not. She turned to reply to him, and saw he was
staring at her again. Somewhere deep inside her, a decision was made.
She smiled a bit impishly and he breathed hard.
"Fox, I think we'll get to this point again. I think we'll get to it
sooner than you know." With that, she slipped her hands out of his strong
ones and let them play over his chest muscles, his lower stomach, his
groin. He was immediately aroused, much to both their surprise. Her little
laugh of triumph turned him on so much that he was lost in her instantly.
This time, he was the one left moaning and panting, begging her to let him
in to her. As they melted together, no more words were necessary. What
had been right under his nose, was now under his body and in his heart,
and they both knew they would not lose sight of this, ever. Theirs was
more than a partnership of career and risk; it was now the pact of a
lifetime.
