Love Lasts An Eternity (1/1)
By: Teresa Horne (ashke@unforgettable.com)

His soul was being torn apart, like it had been once before, but this
time had a more final ring to it. The other part of his soul was
dying. He had been living in a daze of denial for weeks now, but as
the days slowly passed, he realized that she was leaving him --
forever.

It was only when he realized that that he allowed himself to cry. His
tears were not for her, or even for him. It was for all that had been
lost and never found. The innocence they once had and the love they
never shared. It was always there, but hidden, and now, it was never
to be.

He had always believed her to be the strong one, at least until this
all began, then she showed him that she wasn't as strong as he
believed her to be.

But that was before he got the letter.

It was short, simple and honest, like Scully herself. Although he
could practically hear her in the back of his mind proclaiming that
she was "petite", not "short". He sat down and he unfolded the last
thing she ever wrote.

Mulder,

It's me. Even now, it seems more appropiate to start it off this way.
You were right, you know. Souls *do* mate eternal, and I will be
waiting on you. I sense that my time with you is not yet done, and I
will be watching over you after my spirit flees. Yes, I sound like
Missy, and I know it, but I realized that she was right in some
things.

We never got things right between us, for something always stood in
the way. Whether it was the Bureau, Samantha, the Quest for Truth, or
the Walls we wrapped around ourselves, I guess we'll never know.
You'd think that after all we've been through, we would have
learned.... guess not, huh?

Continue our Quest, Mulder, for I know as well as you do that this has
been *our* quest for a long time now. Find Samantha and find your
peace. Mulder, there is one thing I ask of you; do not follow me into
the abyss, for there is work that needs to be done here.

Remember that, and remember me always...

Oh, and I'm glad to say this one thing... sorry for ditching you,
Mulder.

Love always,
Scully

Setting the letter down on the table, he grabbed his keys, and raced
to the hospital. Entering her hospital room for the last time, he
looked upon her dying form. As if sensing his presence, her blue eyes
opened, weak but with a peace that he hoped to feel one day.

She smiled, and grasped his hand. With her dying breath, she
whispered the words that he had once told her.

"Souls mate eternal..."

As he fought back the tears once again, he felt her spirit flood his
soul with light, and seem to settle there. She was right; she would
always be with him.

And he would carry on with the knowledge that love like theirs lasts
an eternity.
