The cancer had started eating at her body, and she soon became very weak and emaciated, serving out her death sentence in a gloomy hospital. But at least she was not alone. Mulder had never left her side from the moment she was admitted, save for the time he was off looking for ways to save her life. For all his efforts and the strength of their friendship, she had fallen in love with him. She wanted to tell him exactly what he meant to her, but she was afraid it would ruin their friendship if he did not feel the same way. If that happened, she would die alone. It was true that she had her family, but her heart would be empty. Mulder was still waiting for the miracle that would allow Scully to live to see the leaves blossom on the trees. He had only recently realized his feelings for her run deeper than any of his other convictions, and he did not want to believe that it was too late for the two of them to build a life together. For a man who has seen and believed many wild things, the death of the woman he loves was the one thing that he could not believe. He had tried to tell her, but there never seemed to be a right moment. Whenever the situation became intense, Scully would change the subject. Now he wondered if he would ever get the chance to feel her lips on his. It was one of Scully's good days, so rare now amid the pain. Mulder was just returning from his latest quest to find a way to save her life before *it* happened. "Well?" Scully asked. Mulder came and sat on the edge of the bed. "Another dead-end," he replied, looking quite close to tears. Scully reached over and took hold of his hand. "It won't be much longer. Maybe it's time to let nature take it's course." "I can't," Mulder explained. "Why?" "I can never give up on the woman that I love," he said passionately, tears spilling out of his eyes. Now he had said it. Now she knew how he felt. She was so silent, she seemed almost stunned. "You love me?", Scully replied after letting Mulder's declaration sink in. Her tears began falling as well. "Even like this?" she said, gesturing toward her frail frame. "Especially like this. You have been so strong and courageous and it made me realize how much I love you." "Oh Mulder...Fox, I never dreamed you felt the same way. I love you too." He leaned over and let his lips touch hers for the first time. Two weeks later, he held her hand as she took her last breath, comforted in the knowledge that she did not die alone. He kissed her for the last time... ********************************************************************** Okay, so that was pretty cheesy. I would still like you to send me your comments while I work on my next (and much better) story. Paula 96kinchp@scar.utoronto.ca
