"Merry Christmas, Scully"
by Angel-Wings Gaskins
*~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~*
Scully stared out the passenger-side window at the the ice-laden world
wizzing by. It was mesmorizing, the way the snow laced the ground
beautifully and blanketed the trees as if to warm them, instead of
chilling them harshly. The landscape was dotted with cabins here and
there with smoke rising peacefully from their warm chimneys. She
smiled to herself at the thought of families and children huddled
around the hearth on Christmas Eve in their pyjamas, telling Christmas
stories and feeling humble.

She turned to look at her partner with his wraggled, disobedient hair
and his designer sunglasses. Gorgeous, she thought, staring at his
features. He turned to look at her, smiling in response.

"Can I help you, Scully?"

She just yawned, drawing her hands over her head to stretch. He
chuckled lightly at her reaction. "Don't worry, we're almost there.
Promise."

"Yeah, well, it would be enlightening to know where 'there' is." He
tossed a playful smile at her, glancing over his sunglasses to view
her. She shook her head and sighed. She loved this side of him-his
adolescence. It barely showed during their professional days, and
his search for an endless truth didn't leave much room for fun like
this.

"Just under an hour, Scully. Lean back and get some sleep." She
eyed him appreciatively and laid her head back against the headrest,
closing her eyes in preperation for dreams. But she couldn't sleep.
He head was too busy with memories and curiosity.

A marquee of images of the past year flashed by her eyes, warming her
soul and cooling it at the same time. Skinner getting that
undefinable disease, only to mysteriously shrug it off; Mulder
trusting Diana Fowley in place of herself; the demise of the Syndicate;
the trip to Florida where Mulder added some new scars to his list; the
bank hostage situation; being married to Mulder, and God, did she love
that situation; the dog woman; the man who could mysteriously change
the matter of anything he touched; the man next door to Mulder who
caused her to break down; the gleeful baseball fun with her partner;
the weird trip to Las Vegas, when she issued a raincheck to kick the LGs
asses; the giant mushroom thing that almost ate them alive; Mulder's
mysterious alien illness which predicted the end of mankind only to
save it; the hamburger joint employee who had a need for brains;
Frank Black... the kiss... She sighed despite herself, realizing
it had been a hell of a year, as it always was with Mulder.

Just an hour before he had asked her to take a ride with him. Now he
wouldn't disclose the destination. She only knew they were headed
north and were now in Pennsylvania.

"Scully? You awake?" She turned her head in his general direction,
opening her eyes a slit.

"Yeah, Mulder, just thinking."

"What about."

"This past year," she answered quietly. He nodded understandingly.

"Anything in particular?"

She blushed slightly, feeling as if he could read her mind about the
kiss. What the hell, she thought. Better now than never. "Yeah,
actually." He looked at her expectingly, never rushing her. "New
Year's Eve... and, um... the kiss."

Mulder smiled at the memory of her warm lips against his own, her
scent, and the meaningful words that followed. It was perfect-she
was perfect. "It was pretty nice, wasn't it?" An understatement if
there ever was one.

"Yes, it was." She quieted as they pulled into a lone driveway and
came to a stop just in front of a snow covered brick house. "Mulder?"

"Merry Christmas, Scully."

"Mulder, Christmas was three weeks ago."

"I know, I know, but this is something special, to make up for the
Christmas' before... c'mon," he said, exiting the car and waiting
eagerly for her to follow. He held out his arm for her, Scully
hooking her elbow around his. He walked her to the door and knocked,
gleefully smiling. She laughed to herself at his boyishness.

The door opened and a familiar face was there to greet them. "Agent
Mulder, Scully, glad you could make it," the man said, smiling happily.

"Wouldn't miss it for the world, Frank." Scully stared in shock as
Frank Black and Mulder shook hands. Scully shook his hand politely,
numb to the feeling. He gestured them inside and took their coats
and winter garments. As soon as Frank was out of sight, Scully spoke.

"Mulder, why are we at Frank Black's house?"

He smiled. "It's his Christmas with his family. He asked us to come."
She nodded and stared at the little girl who came running around the
corner, stopping in front of the two agents. She held out her hand
in greeting, an adorable smile painting her features. Scully shook
her hand and grinned. Mulder noticed the twinkle in her eye from
the girl.

"I remember you; you helped save my Daddy. I'm Jordan."

"Hi, Jordan, I'm Dana. And this is my very good friend, Mulder.
Merry Christmas."

"Yep, I remember him, too. Daddy says that you two are very special
people with special jobs." She took both their hands, pulling them
into the dining room. "C'mon, it's time for dinner." She showed
them to their seats next to one another and watched while averyone
else took theirs. Still, their were two empty place settings, one
next to Frank Black and on next to Scully.

"Why are there empty seats?" she whispered to Mulder.

"Ever since Frank's wife died, Jordan has always set her place at the
table."

She nodded. "What about this one?"

"That one... is a surprise." As if on cue, a cloud of giggles was
heard from the kitchen. A little girl ran into the dining room being
chased by two, tiny puppies at her heels. The group laughed and
Scully felt an odd connection to the girl--almost like Emily. Frank
stopped the petite child and told her to sit down, pointing to her
seat next to Scully. The girl's face beamed and she ran to Scully.

"Mommy!" the girl screamed, running into Scully's arms. The girl
hugged her tightly and Scully couldn't hide her tears of joy. Emily-
her Emily, her baby. She was here, alive. She kissed the girl's hair
and held her tightly against her, whispering 'I love you' and 'I missed
you' over and over again in a chant. The young girl finally broke
away, smiling gloriously. She took Scully's hand and sat in her chair,
grinning.

Scully kissed Mulder's cheek and hugged him gratefully. "Thank you so
much, Mulder. This was the best Christmas present ever."

He watched as the reuinioned couple laughed and giggled. Scully held
his hand tight and thanked him again.

"I love you, Mulder."

"I know, Scully. Merry Christmas."
