He hadn't believed that what had happened in the last few months had been possible. He adjusted his coat and braced himself against the cold, and walked out of the hotel he'd holed up in for the last week. He was on his way to see her, to explain. He hadn't wanted to stay away. Agent Mulder walked along the early morning street, devoid of human obstacles, on his way to see the woman he loved. He hoped she still felt the same way as when he'd left. As the cold wind blew, he walked off. He had no idea that Scully, who had been rushed into emergency surgery to deliver his baby, was now in intensive care. He had no way of knowing he was a father, and that she'd nearly died making certain that his child, his son, would be safe. He had no way of knowing that she'd whispered his name for the last time while holding their baby in her arms, as he made his way through the cold to tell her about the abduction, about the experiments, about the fact that he'd been tagged for pick up. He had no way of knowing that her last thoughts were of their last embrace outside of Skinner's office. He had no way of knowing that, now, she slept. And, would probably sleep for a long time. She knew. She knew when the pain became intense. She knew when a vision of him flashed before her eyes days earlier. He was back. He was safe. Yet, he wasn't with her. He had chosen to stay away. She knew his tortured dreams. She knew when they stopped waking her. And, as she whispered his name and fell into the coma, she held him again, outside of Skinner's office. She thought of the life growing within her then. She had decided to tell him upon his return. She had no idea that it would take this long. As Mulder crossed the street towards the taxi stand, Scully's voice called to him through the distance. He didn't understand. What did she mean? Had he imagined hearing her? Who was David? End
