Midnight Intruder

The apartment was dark and quiet. The sound of traffic was
muffled and far away. The sneakers were silent as they crept
down the dark hallway towards the bedroom doorway. The intruder
noticed with satisfaction that the door was already open. That's
good. No creaking to awaken the apartment's occupants. He
slipped noiselessly through the doorway and stopped momentarily
at the foot of the bed. His eyes had adjusted to the dark, and
he watched the form on the bed. The even breathing and steady
rise and fall of the woman's chest told him she was still in
deep sleep. The black and grey of the night scene had just
enough light for him. Not so light as to be easily seen, but
enough to guide him through the darkness. Some quirk of faint
moonlight shown just enough to make out the red hair spread over
the pillow.

The man eased over to the side of the bed, stood for a moment,
then slowly reached toward the woman. She must have sensed his
presence, because she woke with a start and stared at the form
hovering over her. Her hand shot out to the nighttable for her
gun. But he was faster. He gripped her wrist and pulled it back
from where the gun rested. She drew in a deep breath to scream,
but he clamped his other hand over her mouth before she could
make a sound.

"Shh . . . Scully, it's me," he whispered.

"Mulder? Mulder! Is it really you?" Scully sat up and hugged
him close, sobbing. Mulder sat next to her on the bed, holding
her tight and comforting her. After a few minutes the tears
gave way to the subdued laughter of relief and excitement. They
finally pulled apart and smiled at each other.

"What are you doing here? Is it safe?" Scully asked him.

Mulder grinned back at her and answered softly, "Yeah. I've
worked out arrangements so that we don't have to worry any more.
We can live a normal life. There'll be no more running or being
hounded."

Scully's look of delight changed quickly to confusion. "Then
why did you sneak in here tonight? Why are we whispering?"

Mulder put his hand on her cheek and smiled. "I just didn't want
to disturb William." He looked around the room, then back at
Scully. "Where is he? Where is our son?"

Scully, shaking now, just looked at him. How could she explain?

"Scully," Mulder pressed her, "Where is our baby? Where is my
son?!" He grabbed her shoulders and shook her, yelling now,
"Scully, where is he?!"

He was so alarmed and angry now that she was frightened. She
cried out and tried to apologize, but she couldn't get any words
out. There was just a strangled sound as the tears started
pouring down her face.

He had his arms around her now, shaking her gently. She could
hear him calling to her soothingly over the roar in her ears,
"Scully, Scully. Wake up. It's just a dream. Just a bad dream."

Scully blinked up at Mulder, her heart still racing. He wiped
the tears from her face tenderly. His own face showed only love
and concern.

Oh, yes. That's right. They were in a little, out-of-the way
motel, hiding from the authorities. She had already told Mulder
about William, about her efforts to safeguard him. He hadn't
been angry. He had been heartbroken not to see their son, but
he had understood the need. He agreed that, for now, it was
probably for the best. They really had no choice. The
battlefield was no place for a child. And this was going to
be a battle. A war. It was really just beginning. They were
going to fight it together. They would fight to make the world
a safe place for William, and for his children.

End
