July 1999 Mulder watched as Scully's car pulled out of the Hoover building parking garage. Her tires let off a squeal that reverberated off of the bare walls of the underground. he has said. He could hardly believe what he had heard. "Unbelievable," he murmured. Opening the door to his car, Mulder got in and started the engine. He buckled his seatbelt with fumbling hands. He threw the car into reverse and floored it; the squeal of his tires echoing like Scully's had before him. Maybe if he hurried, he could catch up with Scully and then he could... his mind asked him mockingly. Slamming on the brakes he put the car back into park. Withdrawing his hands from the steering wheel and fussing with a black button on his trench coat, Mulder quickly ran through some scenarios in his head. Say he went over to Scully's tonight, would she even let him in? What if he knocked on her door and she laughed at him, saying it was just a stupid innuendo? God knows he had given her enough of those over the years to understand. What if he went over there and she let him in, but just as a friend? Midnight visits were not uncommon between them. his mind spoke up again, That was true. Another scenario crept into his musings. What if he didn't go over to Scully's at all tonight and the worst happened? What if she took it completely the wrong way and he blew any chance he would ever have at loving her? "That won't happen!" He put the car into drive and slammed his foot down as hard as he could. Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Scully sat in her car outside of her apartment building. Just sitting, and thinking. Was he following her? Her mind admonished her. "I said what I was thinking, there is nothing wrong with that," she answered her self out loud. But what had she meant when she told Mulder that he would be seeing her before tomorrow morning? "Daammitt..." she whined as she lowered her head to her steering wheel. How had all this started again? The cookie. Oh yeah, the cookie. The wonderful heart-shaped cookie that she wanted to preserve forever now. "Who knew that it would be a cookie that would make me confess my love for Mulder? Oh, great, I'm talking to myself now!" The cold spring air was slowly seeping into her car and Scully found herself getting cold. "That does it! We have kissed, said I love you, he me a friggin' heart-shaped cookie, this should be the easy part!" Unfortunately, it wasn't. But she didn't care anymore. It was Mulder that she wanted and she was tired of denying herself what she wanted. "No more!" She declared as she pulled her car out of her spot and into the streets of Georgetown. Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Mulder sped through the streets of Georgetown, trying not to get into an accident as he raced towards Scully's. There weren't too many drivers on the street this time of the night, but if he killed himself by driving like an idiot he knew Scully would probably be pissed. Passing by the college dorms on his left, Mulder slowed the car down once he got near Scully's neighborhood. He made all the familiar left and right turns until he could see her street in front of him. He saw the row of small maple trees that lined her street. He saw the white brick building that he hoped he would be never have to leave again. Pulling the car to a stop in front of her building, through the window he saw the small table lamp turned on, waiting for his arrival. Parking the car he made his way up the sidewalk and to the main doors. Using the key that Scully had given him years ago, he let himself in, not bothering to wait for her to buzz him up. Practically running down the hall he pushed the key to her apartment into the lock noisily. "Scully, hey Scully!" Calling her seemed to do no good. He didn't think it was likely, but maybe she was waiting for him in the bedroom. He walked slowly toward the bedroom and glanced around the corner. The bedroom was dark and empty...so where was she? Going back to the front door, Mulder paused at the window. Pulling the back the sheer curtains he peered outside onto the street in front of him. He saw...he saw his car parked where hers usually was. "Dammit!" Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Scully could feel her heart start to beat in her chest as her car Crossed the bridge into Arlington. "Almost there, Mulder," she said to no one, but certain that he could hear her in his mind. The streets in his neighborhood twisted and turned more than the ones in her part of D.C. and she felt her hands gripping the steering wheel tightly. Looking in her review mirror, Scully could see the lights from the city across the bridge. It reminded her that the next time she saw that side of the river that there would be something different about her and Mulder. The thought didn't frighten her; it made her adrenaline rush and her foot press harder on the gas pedal. The day had been long for both of them, but tomorrow seemed so far away. It seemed to Scully like they had all night and that nothing mattered, not even tomorrow morning. As she pulled onto Mulder's road little butterflies began flying around in her stomach. By the time she had parked her car in front of his building the butterflies had turned to bats. Expecting nothing and everything at the same time, Scully jumped out of her car and onto the front steps to hit the buzzer to let him know that she was here for the duration. Raising her index finger up to hit the little white button, Scully took one last glance behind her at the darkened night sky. Tomorrow it would all be different. She smiled and turned back to the buzzer. Harsh realization hit her at the same as she hit the buzzer button. Whipping her head around she found what her mind told her to be true. His car was not there. Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx She wasn't there! She had been joking around after all. Hurt and confused Mulder reached for the doorknob. With a sigh, he walked back to her couch and thought about what his next move would be now as he lowered himself into the comfy cushions. Digging his cell phone out of his pocket he quickly dialed Scully's phone. Total and complete honesty was the way to go here. And maybe the puppy-dog face once he saw her. Three rings went by before she picked up. He could her keys jingling before he heard her voice. "Scully." "Hey, Scully it's me. Um, where are you right now?" "Right now...um, I'm in, um, Arlington. Sitting on the front steps of your apartment building freezing my butt off waiting for you. Where are YOU Mulder?" "I'm in...well, I'm in, a, Georgetown. Sitting on your nice warm couch actually." "What are you doing there, Mulder? Why would you go to my place? Wouldn't common sense tell you that I would be going to your apartment?" "But you said 'Maybe' Scully. I don't like maybes. I wanted to see you before morning." He made the puppy-dog face then, even though he knew that she couldn't see him. "Oh Mulder, I am on my way back to my place right now." He heard her car start over the phone, confirming what she had just told him. "And you can stop making that face, I know that you are sorry, I'm not mad." Grinning to himself he knew that tonight was really going to happen. It had all been leading up to this. Every hand touch, every drug induced confession, every heart-shaped cookie offering. Each one put them here, right now. "Hey, Scully, I'm kinda hungry again, we didn't get dessert. How about bringing me something back?" "I don't have any money on me Mulder, and all I have is one heart-shaped cookie. And there is no way that you are going to eat that. You'll just have to settle for me for dessert." "That's good, that's all I really wanted anyway." Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Well folks, that's it, (unless you people ask for more)! I really hope that you enjoyed reading this series. I really enjoyed writing it. Who knew that seeing one heart-shaped cookie in an 'Au Bon Pain' across from the FBI Building in DC could lead to this? Not me! Special thanks to my good friend KD for putting up with my writers block whining and to my mom for telling me that the stories were good, even though she probably just said that because she's my mom! Take Care!
