Disclaimer: Mulder and Scully belong to CC and Fox. The lyrics from "How
Do I Get There" are sung by Deana Carter and are copyrighted to Emi
Princeton Street Music, Full Keel Music Co., and Farrenuff Music.
Basically, none of this belongs to me.

Rating: PG-13

Distribution: Just keep my name on it and let me know where it's
archived.

Classification: Mulder-angst, I think. I don't know, I haven't been
writing that long. Maybe some MSR?

Spoilers: Reference to second season's 'Duane Barry', 'Ascension', and
'3'. Also fourth season spoilers.

Summary: Mulder tries to sort out his partner's abduction while trying
to decide how to tell her how he feels should he ever see her again.

Author Note: If this is hard to follow, it's probably because I've
twisted both second and fourth season into one story without any of the
developments revealed by third season.

A Missing Love

The song coming onto the radio turned Mulder's attention from
the TV program that he wasn't watching anyway. Different from his usual
listening, he had tuned into a country station on the recommendation of
a friend outside the Bureau that he'd confided in about Scully and his
growing affection for her. Now he was finding that the lyrics said
exactly what he wanted to say. Deana Carter's 'How Do I Get There'
drifted from the speakers towards his waiting ears.

We've always been the best of friends
No secrets and no demands
But suddenly from somewhere out of the blue
I see a different light around you
One thing I haven't told you,
I just want to hold you
And never let go,
I need to know

How do I get there from here
How do I make you see
How do I tell you what my heart's been tellin' me
Lost in your lovin' arms that's where I wanna be
You know I love you
How do I get there

How true. How indeed? But it still didn't answer his question. And now
that she'd gone and gotten herself abducted, how was he supposed to tell
her at all? The next verse lazily wafted through the room.

You probably think I've lost my mind
Takin' this chance crossin' that line
But I promise to be truer than true
Dreaming every night with these arms around you
I can't wait any longer this feeling's gettin' stronger
Help me find a way

As the song switched back to the chorus, he knew that insane was
definitely what she'd think he was if he ever told her. If he ever got
the chance. God, why had he hesitated so damn long? Now he may never see
her again, and she'd never know, which really stank now that he knew how
to tell her.

I know the shortest distance between two points is a straight line
But I'll climb any mountain that you want me to climb
The perfect combination is your heart and mine
Darlin' won't you give me a sign

Listening to the chorus again as it faded out, he sighed. Why hadn't he
told her when he had the chance? All he'd had to do is pick up the phone
and call. Or go over to her apartment and tell her to her face. She
would have understood, wouldn't she?
