From: Alysa Payge Date: Sat, 18 Jul 1998 20:16:30 -0600 Subject: NEW: Mrs. Cancerman? (1/2) sorry all. . . i don't know what happened the 1st time. Feedback is good! alysabeth@goplay.com X - Files Fan Fic Disclaimer: I wish they were mine, but they aren't. These characters belong to the Almighty Chris Carter, 1013 Productions *I made this*, and Fox. I'm not getting any money from writing this lil story. So don't sue me. Wait till I write something worth suing for. Oh, and Dr. Wesley Grant and Evie are mine!!! If any other fan fic writers want to use one of `em, go right ahead. But if I-won't-share-my-toys-with-anyone-but-my-writers Chris Carter wants `em, well, then he'll have to trade me for Mulder. Distribution: Distribute away! Archive where-ever! Just tell me. Summary: In an alternate universe, Scully is a doctor, and she falls head over heels for the person you'd least expect. Mulder, whom she doesn't know very well, has to make her see the errors of her ways, and try to save her life. . . (My Hero.) Enjoy. Rated: PG. If you're lucky, I'll make it up to PG13 (It'd only be for language though.) Alternate Universe, Mulder/Scully romance, Scully/Other romance. If you don't like that sort of thing, then you can leave. . . I guess. You've been warned. This is my first fan fic. Which should become too obvious. But read it anyways and tell me stuff that I should change, get rid of, add, etc. . . Another note: At the beginning of this story, all the characters are pretty much the same, only Scully is kind of a damsel in distress and not really Scully-like at all (I'm workin on it!!), she has never met Mulder before and she does not work for the FBI, therefore, she has never been abducted, given cancer, etc. Of course that could all change. . . and Mulder is not doing the X-Files thing, so Sam wasn't abducted, his daddy must not have worked for THEM. Cancerman/Cigarette Smokin' Man is pretty much the same guy, blackened lungs and all. Hang onto your hats kids, cuz here we go! Part One. ******** Holy Angels Hospital 10:00 PM "We've got a live one folks!" a crazed paramedic shouted as he and others like him burst through the doors of the hospitals' ER, a stretcher between them. "Get out of the way!" the second paramedic yelled at an intern, who was gasping at whomever she saw on the stretcher. "E gads. What happened to him?!?" Dr. Wesley Grant asked. "A bombing, sir. Looks like he was the only one in the building at the time." Dr. Grant followed the near out of control paramedics into an emergency surgery room. Fellow doctors looked on. All of them showed signs of fatigue. Especially one red-headed doctor sitting in a corner chair. She was sleeping. All the other doctors and nurses went off to make their rounds, leaving Dr. Dana Scully asleep in the corner. No one dared wake her. A tall dark handsome man, swept into the ER, cell phone in hand. He saw the empty room, and wondered just what kind of a hospital this was, no one available in the Emergency Room, especially at this hour on a weekend! "Where the hell is everybody?" he asked. He was answered with a low moan. "Ah. Asleep on the job, eh?" He walked towards the little doctor. She was kind of cute. He watched her for a minute, and then decided that he'd better start doing his job. He sat down next to Dr. Dana Scully, and said quite loudly in her ear, "Hey!" She awoke with a start. Rubbed her eyes, and turned to the man sitting next to her. "Who the hell are you?" "You sure are happy when you first wake up, aren't you?" the man teased. She chose to ignore his smart ass comment. "I'm sorry. I'm Dr. Scully. How can I help you, Mr. . . uh--" "Special Agent Fox Mulder, actually." he said, flashing his badge, "I was wondering, did you see a man rushed into here?" "Well. . . no. I was sleeping." "Ah, yes. Could you find out for me?" "Sure. Sure. Just a second," she walked into another room, and came back out. "They did just admit someone, but you can't see him." "Okay. I'll come back later," he replied, turning on his heel. "Sir?" Dr. Scully called out. "Yes?" "Are you related to the victim?" "He's hardly a victim. And no, I'm not." Dana Scully looked perplexed. "Will you do me a favor, Dr. Scully?" he asked, ignoring the look. "I suppose." "Make sure that no one but you sees him after he's out of surgery." "I'm not sure that I can guarantee that, sir. . ." "I'll come back later and make sure that you can guarantee it Dr. Scully," Mulder replied, smiling. Dana thought. "Thank you for your time. You can go back to sleep now." "You're welcome," she said, a smile playing on her lips, "And I think I will." He smiled again, and left the ER without so much as a backwards glance. the thought was mutual. - X XIII X XIII X XIII - One Month Later Same Place 12:00 PM Dana Scully sat next to a patients bed in ICU and sighed. She'd been there for hours waiting for Fox Mulder to return to question his non-victim. `Charlie' had awoke only a couple of weeks ago. He'd had one major concussion. He was suffering from amnesia, Dana thought, Dana had gotten to know Mulder, as he preferred to be called, the past month. He had trusted her with information on the man lying before her, but she didn't believe what Mulder had told her. she thought. `Charlie,' as he had been dubbed by the hospital staff was a perfectly charming old gentleman, and Dana had been swept off her feet by him. Somehow he'd ordered flowers for her, to thank her for sitting by his bedside for the past week. They were white roses. Each one absolutely perfect. Her obvious attraction to the "old geezer" had upset Mulder. He'd thought he had made it clear to Dana Scully that this man was dangerous. Not one to be taken lightly. And certainly not one to swoon over! he thought with disgust, So, to test his theory, he'd brought Dr. Dana Scully a dozen _red_ roses with a note. It read: Dear Dana, Thank you for helping me out this past week. These are a token of my affection. XoXo Mulder Sure, it was sappy, and not altogether true, but it would serve its purpose. Dana loved the flowers, and found the note disconcerting. She still swooned over Charlie. *Looks like your plan was foiled Fox.* *You're talking to me?* <. . . No.> *Ha. Ha.* "I hate it when my head talks to me," he mumbled to himself. *Poor baby.* He decided to ignore her for awhile. *Pure luck.* *Ya got me. Just don't ignore me. I see and hear more than you do.* *Fox. . . You ignored me when you were with Phoebe and all those other chicks. If you'd listened to me, you wouldn't have gotten in so much trouble with them.* *Well, look out, cause here comes the woman of your _current_ dreams.* Mulder scowled at this remark. "Agent Mulder?" "Yes?" "Charlie wants to talk to you. It's important." "Thank you Dr. Scully," he walked through the doors to the old guys room. "Agent Mulder! So good to see you again," `Charlie said. "Uh huh. What did you want to see me for?" "I was just wondering, if you would allow me to take Dr. Scully on a vacation." It wasn't a question. "She's been under a lot of stress, and I think she needs a break." Mulder didn't know what to say. He wasn't normally at a loss for words. He didn't want Scully going on a trip with this goon, he didn't even want her to go near him, *Where is this coming from Foxy-boy? You've known her for a month and already you are being protective of her!* "Agent Mulder?" "Uh. . . I really don't think that's a good idea." "Why not? I'm better, and she needs a break--" "Sir," he might despise the old man lying before him, but there was no need to be rude, "you're suffering from amnesia. You couldn't possibly leave the hospital. Let alone go on a trip." "I've forgotten the past, I'm not an invalid." Mulder exhaled loudly. "I know you aren't Sir, but. . ." "I like her Agent Mulder. I'd never do a thing to hurt her." "I'm aware of that. I just. . ." *Well. . . You can't just leave it like that! You what?!?* her voice was becoming insistent. "I also know that you are protective of her, Agent Mulder. Perhaps we feel the same for Dana." *The old man knows your feelings better than you do!* "I do care for her. I don't want her to be hurt, in any way." "She won't be." Mulder pondered for a moment. "Sir, why are you asking me for permission? Shouldn't you be asking Dr. Scully?" "I have asked Dr. Scully. She has consented, but she was concerned about your thoughts on the subject. Therefore, I'm asking you." *Just let them go. You can always follow them. She'll be safe.* *Cross my heart.* *Cause I'm all you've got.* "You can take her. Just make sure that she is safe," Mulder answered, "Because if anything happens to her, I'll make sure that you'll fry for it." With that, Mulder flew from the room before he could change his mind. *Cause I told you to.* - X XIII X XIII X XIII - Dana Scully's Apt. Later that day Knock, knock. She answered the door to find one very concerned Fox Mulder at her doorstep. "Mulder, come on in." "Thanks." "I don't mean to be rude, but why are you here? And more importantly, how did you know that I live here?" "Your trip, and I have three very useful resources." "Ah. . . " "Listen, Dr. Scully, I really don't think you know what this man is capable of." "Mulder, I know what he's capable of. You told me a week ago," she paused, "but this is `Charlie,' he wouldn't hurt a soul. And he's lost his memory anyhow. He won't hurt me. He's got no reason to." "You don't know that." "Gee. . . You really are paranoid, aren't you?" Mulder sighed. "Dana, I'm just concerned. I can't arrest him because I don't have enough evidence to prove that this is really the man we're after." "Look, Mulder. We've discussed this. I'm going with Charlie. Whether you like it or not." *You're gonna let it end like _this_? You're hopeless boy.* "Dana, please." "I'll be fine Mulder. You even told Charlie yesterday that you would let me go along with him, and he promised you that I would be safe!" "That man does not keep promises." "He keeps the ones that he makes to me." "You've known him for two weeks! How do you figure that he's so damn trustworthy?!?" "I don't know," she answered truthfully, not looking at Mulder anymore, "I just know that he won't hurt me." *Let it go! She'll be fine!* "Okay, fine, go with him." "I will." "This doesn't mean that I'm okay with it." Dana pushed him out the door. "I don't care if you're okay with it. I'm going." With that said, she slammed the door shut. *She'll be okay Fox.* The voice was soothing now. *He won't. He loves her.* *It's the 21st century. They've got drugs that would take care of that. Viagra comes to mind. . .* *Oh no you don't. _I_ don't like being intoxicated.* *Alright I will. Call me when you get over that nasty hangover.* His voice was gone for the night. Taking the opportunity, he quickly went home and drowned his sorrows in a bottle of vodka. The pain didn't go away. - X XIII X XIII X XIII - Airport 10:30 am "Dana, do you have everything?" "Yes." "You like Hawaii, don't you?" "I've never been there, but I'm sure I'll love it," she smiled one of her million dollar smiles at Charlie. He smiled back and took her hand as they walked towards their terminal. - X XIII X XIII X XIII - Airport 10:40 am "Flight 1013 for Honolulu, Hawaii, is now boarding," the loudspeaker chirruped. "Where is she?" Mulder asked. "I don't see her," Frohike answered, "I'd be able to find her anywhere, she's a hot one Mulder." "Frohike. . ." Mulder said warningly. "Why'd you let her go off with that goon anyways?" "Stupidity." "Heh." "Look, she's got to be here somewhere. Where's Byers and Langly?" "Opposite ends of the airport." "We aren't going to find her. Do you think that tracking device that I put in her suitcase is working?" "Of course." "Then lets go back and check it out. I'll just have to go on a later flight." "Flight 1013 for Honolulu, Hawaii, this is your final boarding call," the loudspeaker said, eluding our hero for yet a second time. - X XIII X XIII X XIII - The Lone Gunman's Laboratory 12:00 pm The same day "Feelin better Mulder?" Byers asked through a closed bathroom door. "Yeah. I'm fine." Mulder groaned. *Too much vodka, huh?* He didn't answer her, he just moaned. *I don't pity you.* Mulder got up off of the tiled floor and splashed his face with water from the sink. "Whatcha got?" he asked, emerging from the bathroom. "Nothing yet," Langley replied. "It's on a timer," Frohike explained, "Should go off any minute now." "There it is," Langley said. After a closer examination the four deducted that she was in a hotel about thirty miles from the Honolulu airport. Within minutes Mulder had a plane ticket, his destination, Hawaii. - X XIII X XIII X XIII - Much Later The Enchanted Hotel Hawaii "Charlie, this place is wonderful!" Dana exclaimed, coming in from the balcony. "I knew you'd like it." "How did you find it?" It was right on the beach, and the sunset was absolutely gorgeous. "That's a secret. Maybe I'll share it with you someday." She smiled at him. Dana had been fighting with her conscience the past couple days over Charlie. Well, not over him, about him. *He's old. Shriveled. Ick.* *He's suspicious.* *Sure. Fine. Whatever.* Dana sighed inwardly at the voice. She hadn't ever experienced anything like it before. Come to think of it, the voice had started around the time she had met Fox Mulder. *I'm so glad you agree with me.* *He's still weird.* *Fox said that too.* *Nevermind. Dana, ditch this guy. He's gross.* *I can't believe you are staying the same room as this creep.* *Just don't. . . Screw him. Okay?* Dana sighed in annoyance. To Charlie, it sounded like a sigh of happiness. "Dana?" "Yes?" "We're going to a luau tonight." "Really? That should be fun!" "It starts in an hour, so we'd better get ready." "Oh, of course." She grabbed her bag and went to the bathroom to change. - X XIII X XIII X XIII - Washington D.C. Airport 2:30 pm "Flight 1113 to Honolulu, Hawaii, now boarding," the loudspeaker blasted into his ear. "Owww. . ." Mulder moaned. He was still suffering from his damned hangover, and that damned announcement had just upgraded his pounding headache from critical to severe. He squeezed himself into his window seat, and sighed deeply. *Don't worry pal. You'll get to her in time.* *You shouldn't worry about him killing her. You should worry about him doing. . . . Other things to her.* Mulder was suddenly very alert. *Fox, I don't know how to break this to you but, they're staying in the same room.* He gasped, causing the man sitting next to him to give him a curious glance. Mulder smiled weakly back at the man. *They are. You've got to get to them in time! Dana won't listen to me.* *Nevermind. I just know a lot more than you do, okay? So believe every word that I tell you. Do that and it'll be smooth sailing from here on out. Got it?* *Okay, catch some z's. You're going to need them when you get to Hawaii.* - X XIII X XIII X XIII - Hawaii Airport Several Hours Later Mulder rushed through the hallways and weaved through the baggage claims, he was out of breath. *Slow down!* *Don't get yourself in a tizz about all this. It's serious, but nothing I can't delay.* *Just get going! I don't' know what hotel they are at. You're going to have to call Frohike.* Mulder grabbed for his phone and started walking at a steady pace towards an unknown destination. - X XIII X XIII X XIII - Enchantment Hotel Same Time "No, I never lost my memory." Charlie took a long drag on his cigarette, before flicking it away. "No, Dana has no idea. . . " a pause, " If she knew it would ruin everything. . . No, we need her. She'll be very valuable in the labs. . . Are you dense?!? Have you been listening to a word I've said?!?" Charlie asked his unknown contact. He was on the balcony outside his hotel room yelling into his cell phone. "For the cancer tests dumbass! We need her. As a doctor, and as a test subject. . ." he laughed evilly, "She'll never know what hit her." "Charlie?" Dana asked from inside the hotel room. He quickly closed his phone and threw it into the awaiting bushes below. He could retrieve it later. "Who were you talking to?" she asked, a worried frown betraying her beautiful features. It really was a shame that he had to do this to her. "No one darling." This answer seemed to upset her even further. She thinks I'm going crazy, he thought with glee. "Charlie, are you sure you're alright? Maybe we should go back home, back to the hospital--" "No. Dana, I want to be here. I don't want to be in a hospital right now." She looked at him doubtfully. Ever since they'd arrived here, she had been asking herself what had made her come away with a strange man to Hawaii. Her actions of the last month did not speak `Dana Scully' at all. Just the opposite, in fact. It was like she'd been under some spell. she thought. *Yea! You're on my side! This will make things soo much easier!* Dana sighed at the sound of the voice. *You think he's suspicious now, don't you?* <. . . Yes.> *Okay, you have to ditch him. Run away when he gets in the shower or something. Just get away from him.* *No `buts' Dana. You are in serious danger with this creep. Save yourself while you still can!* *Thank you!* Part Two Disclaimer and all that crap is at the top ********* Umm. . . Writers block. I know what I want to happen, but how to word it? Grrr. . . Its three in the morning. Insomnia has claimed me. "In a real dark night of the soul it is always three o'clock in the morning, day after day." F. Scott Fitzgerald creepy. . . Okay here goes - X XIII X XIII X XIII - That hotel room w/ the icky man. heh. . . "Dana, come to bed." Dana looked at herself in the mirror in the bathroom, the look was a cross between a `hell-no' and disbelief that he'd actually said that. she pondered. *Run Forrest, run!* the voice taunted in her head. "Uh, I'll be there in a second," she said emerging from the bathroom, "I just want some ice." She picked up the ice bucket and walked quickly towards the door. "Dana?" he said, just as her hand reached the doorknob, "Room key?" "Oh! I completely forgot. Thank you," she said as he handed her the plastic card. - X XIII X XIII X XIII - "He what?!?" Mulder screamed into his cell phone. "He never had amnesia," Langly explained calmly. "How do you know this?" "Tapped his cell phone." "How did. . . Nevermind. Look I'm about five minutes away from the hotel, I'll call you when I find her." "Good luck Mulder." Mulder slapped his cell phone shut and groaned. He had not been counting on this. *Situation is under control.* *Dana's out, you just might make it there in time.* *To wisk her away. You obviously can't go back to your normal lives after all this.* *Yup, and you're gonna love it buster.* *Front of the hotel. Keep the car warm. She's only wearing a robe.* Mulder felt his heart beat a little faster, - X XIII X XIII X XIII - Dana's mind was racing as she ran down the stairs to the lobby. She ran to the information desk, "Can I use the phone?" she begged, breathless. The man behind the counter was bewildered, to say the least. He pushed the phone towards the redhead who was wearing only a silk robe, or so it seemed. She dialed Mulder's cell phone number, apologies would come later, she decided. Right now all that mattered was getting out of here. "Mulder." "Oh god Mulder! You've got to get to Hawaii, right away!" "I'm already here Dana, where are you?" "Lobby, Enchantment Hotel. He's really creepy!" "I know, I'll be there in 2 minutes. . . And Dana?" "Yeah?" "Listen to that voice in your head. She helps." "What?" but Mulder had already hung up the phone. She put the receiver down and looked around the lobby cautiously, he must not be down there yet. Dana ran out the front doors and hid in the shadows. She discovered that she was clutching the room key with all of her might. Just then a blue Taurus pulled up, and she saw Mulder's wonderful face willing her to get into the car. She was only too happy to oblige. As she ran from the shadows a hand grabbed her from behind, and she was welcomed with a gun pressed to her left temple. *Just stay calm Dana. Everything's going to be okay.* Dana was too damn scared to even think anything. "Morley, let her go," Mulder was saying, stepping out of the car. "One more step and I'll kill her." "You love her, you wouldn't kill someone that you loved would you?" Mulder asked, it was Mulder's voice, but it wasn't really Mulder talking. Morley didn't say anything, but he did ease up on the pressure of the gun to Dana's temple. "You do love her," the voice wasn't even Mulders anymore, and the words weren't coming from Mulder's mouth. They were coming from the mouth of a girl in white, sitting on the hood of the car, her arms and legs crossed in defiance. "You. . ." Morley whispered, "It can't be." "Oh, I assure you that it is me Morley. Judgement day has come," she said sliding off the hood, and beginning to slowly approach the man with the gun. Mulder noticed that Morley was as white as a sheet, a look of pure terror in his eyes. He might have really enjoyed the moment, if it weren't for that gun pressed against Dana's head. "You've been mean and nasty for too long. Its stopping now." "No! You aren't real! I'm not seeing you!" The girl sighed and rolled her eyes, "How about this Morley?" she asked as she pulled the gun from his hand and Dana away from him, "Was that real?" Dana ran to Mulder, seeking comfort in his embrace. The girl took the gun and shot every bullet out into the air, and then threw it aside, "You're done for," she said in a matter-o fact tone. "Please," he weeped, falling to his knees at her feet, "I was just--" "Look. I don't have time for your excuses. I've got a job to finish, and you've been getting in the way!" "But Evie!" "No. I will not listen to you. I do not have the time or the patience to deal with your sorry ass! Now get up!" He did, and even though she was a good five inches shorter than he was, he cowered before her. "Evie, I'm--" "You're sorry?" she asked, "Save it for the council, bud, cause my ears don't want to hear it. Now apologize to Fox and Dana for royally screwing the rest of their lives!" "I'm sorry," he mumbled. "Ya know what?" Evie said, "I don't think they heard it up there, ya might want to say it a bit louder this time, and actually mean it." "Dana. Fox. I am truly sorry for messing up your lives, and the lives of everyone else that I've touched. I'm like King Midas, only whatever I touch is destroyed," he was really crying now, begging for mercy. Dana looked at Mulder and he shrugged. "We accept the apology?" Dana said, confused. Evie looked satisfied. "Okay Morley, I'm going to give you one last chance to make your life worthwhile, by erasing all the memories that you have since you worked for THEM. If you screw it up this time, you're going to hell, that is if you aren't already." She waved her hands dramaticly for a few moments, chanting phrases in an unknown language under her breath. Then she clasped her hands together and there was a loud clap of thunder, and Morley was gone. Dana and Mulder stared at the spot where the man had once stood. Evie looked up and smiled at the two of them. *They really do make a perfect couple,* she thought, *Guess this thing wasn't worthless after all.* "Come here you guys," she said enveloping them in a hug, "I guess my work here is done, huh?" she said, stepping back. "How did you know him?" Dana asked, the shock was just too much for her, Evie supposed. "I once did for him what I just did for you two. He was happy for awhile. . ." she replied sadly, looking at the spot on the ground. "What did you do for us?" Evie snorted, "You really don't know?" They shook their heads. "Wow. They were right, you guys really did need the help." "Help with what?" Mulder asked. "You two were put on this Earth for each other, and the higher ups figured that since you were both so. . . stubborn," Evie spat the word, "you'd never figure it out, and if you did, it would be too late." Dana looked at Mulder, she was shocked. He just smiled, like he'd known all along. "Well, I think its time for me to leave," she said. She took Dana's hand in her right and Fox's in her left. "You two were meant for each other. Don't mess it up. I'm too lazy to come back and fix it," she smiled weakly. She sighed, looked at the ground and then placed Dana's small hand in Fox's much bigger one. "Perfect fit," she commented, wiping away a tear that had escaped. Evie smiled at the two of them, her eyes filled with tears. Then she turned and walked away. One loud clap of thunder, and she was gone. Dana, her eyes wide, and wet with salty tears, hugged Mulder tightly, then pulled away. Her blue eyes searching his. Mulder smiled, and bent down to cover her mouth with his. Life was sweet. And so was the kiss. The end. . . Sappy? Yes. Oh well, thats what makes it a MSR! Please give me feedback! I love the stuff! And I'll even write you back!! Truly! The voice stays!!! I like Evie!
