Author's notes: Everyone's talking about what those "three words" could be. ___________________________________________________________ As I passed my fingers through his hair, I noticed Mulder's lips moved. I heard him whisper something. I was too late to read his expression, but I think he either said that he missed me or that he loved me. So, I smiled back and leaned over to hug him. His body felt warm and the world around us suddenly melted away... until Doggett openned the door to peak in. I think I saw despair in his face. "I missed you." I mumbled against his chest, listenning to his steady heartbeat. Mulder giggled in a sigh and fell back asleep. I sat back up and watched him for a few minutes more. Months ago, I thought I had lost him forever, as well as the chance for true happiness once in my life. When Doggett was assigned to the X files, I closed off to him. But, he did find a way to my heart and became a good friend. Though he was the first one to make me smile, he couldn't replace Mulder. "I'll be right back!" I whispered to my sleeping beauty and got up to see Doggett. I walked out of the room to find an empty hallway, but I knew Doggett hadn't left yet. I knew he wanted to make sure I was alright before he left. I looked for him in the waiting room only to find a very relieved Skinner. He smiled at me and I remarked he had been crying. Nothing touches me more than seeing a big man like him cry. So, I grinned back and went on to search for Doggett. "Agent Doggett?!" I finally stumbled upon him in the cafeteria. "Agent Scully!?" he shyly replied, looking away from my eyes. "Why aren't you happy for me?" I wondered outloud, sitting in front of him. "I AM happy for you..." he pointed out. "Then, why the sad face?" I responded to his answer. "Because I will never be half the man Mulder is." he met my stare with reluctance. "What do you mean?" I worried about him. "You might not be a Mulder, but you are John Doggett and you are a whole person." I tried to comfort him. "I will never be half the man Mulder is because he has you and I don't." he mumbled as he looked back down. "And, it hurts me to know I can't have you..." "Is that why you didn't want to dig him up?" I interrupted him abruptly. "NO!" he reacted bluntly. "My goal wa always, and still is, to ensure you are okay and happy. I guess I just hoped you would be happy with me." he confessed. "Oh! John..." I murmured as I took his hands in mine. "I never wanted to fall in love with you..." he cut me off politely to admit his secret. "I couldn't help but empathize with you, having been through a similar situation myself. I thought this special connection would bring us closer, but I guess it doesn't work that way." he ended. "Why?" I paused. "Why fall in love with me?" "Don't you know how easily lovable you are?" he grinned up at me. "You are as intelligent as you are beautiful. And, most important, you are a strong person." "John..." I smiled back. "I should've warned you that no one could ever replace Mulder in my heart." I confided in him. "We might only be friends, but I don't think I could ever bring myself to be with someone else, or even imagine it." "I know!" Doggett finally looked at me. "I just envy Mulder very much!" "Thank you for understanding!" I told him. "But, you don't have to envy him. And... You'll find yourself your own version of me, sooner or later." "Now, go and be with him!" he ordered me to go live my life as I pleased. "Go home to rest a little!" I replied. "You look exhausted." And, I got up and walked back to Mulder's room. When I came in, he was waiting for me with his eyes wide open. I smiled and hurried to his bedside. Before I could sit down, he put his hand on my stomach. The baby moved and scared Mulder. He jumped briefly from his position and started to laugh incontrollably. When he finally calmed down, I sat on the chair beside his bed and grinned. "I didn't hear you earlier on..." I specified the moment when I saw his lips moved. "I'm afraid that if I say it outloud, I'll wake up and it will all be over." he said. "I can pinch you, if you want me too." I giggled. "Last time I told you, you didn't believe me!" he recollected the Bermuda's triangle incident. "FOX MULDER!?" I took my motherly voice. "You're not scared of three little words, are you?" I questionned him. "What makes you think I wouldn't believe you now?" I smiled. "Alright already!" he moaned. "I love you!" he paused. "Are you happy?" "Can't you see it in my face?" I bent down to lay my head upon his chest. "Yeah..." he stopped to clear his throat. "You love me too!"
