Summary: Scully longs for Mulder Nature Always Finds A Way Another day without him was about to draw to a close. Agent Dana Scully maneuvered her car silently through the streets of Washington, D.C., slowly making her way home. It was nearing midnight and she was exhausted and alone. Scully and Agent John Doggett had just finished filling in the paperwork for a case that was solved in her mind, but still a puzzle for Doggett. All of the X-File cases seemed to end this way now that he was gone. The void inside of her was growing with every day he did not return. Driving alone in the car she could picture him in her mind. All of the years they had been together and everything she had learned from him washed into her memory. Mulder. He had taught her to open her mind to the realms of extreme possibilities and although she resisted his beliefs at first, she learned to believe. Their combination of scientific fact and blind faith made them an unstoppable team. Mulder and Scully did not have an average working relationship. The work penetrated their daily lives and it meant everything to them. The agents were trusted partners, best friends and soul mates. Mulder was her beginning and end and without him her life was severed. She was now part of a new team and nothing would ever be the same. John Doggett was a fine agent and good to have as a partner. He was honest and listened to her reasoning (even if he only half-believed what she proposed) and their relationship was extremely professional. She had plodded through cases with him and she continued the work of the X-files diving in head first with every case. Her cool and professional exterior did not allow anyone to see that she was drowning inside. There was not one second of her day that was free from Mulder and it was when she was alone that he invaded her with full force. How could she be free from him when his flesh and blood grew inside of her? Stopped at the lights two blocks from her home, Scully placed her hand on her swollen belly. She was 6 months pregnant and the life inside of her was obvious. They had made love only twice before he was taken and neither of them would have thought it possible. She was barren, or so she thought. Nature always finds a way. It had taken them so long to explore a physical connection, even though their spirits had been one from the start. Dana Scully would never be the same after their first sexual encounters and now, she longed for his gentle, knowing touch. Her apartment was in view and she slowed her car and parked against the curb. Scully turned the engine off but let the radio play. She stared ahead as the words rang in her head: "I know you have a little life in you yet I know you have a lot of strength left I should be crying but I just can't let it show I should be hoping but I can't stop thinking All the things I should have said That I never said All the things we should have done Though we never did All the things I should have given That I didn't Oh, darling, make it go Make it go away Give me these moments back Give them back to me Give me that little kiss Give me your heart" The tears stung her face and she collapsed against the steering wheel. She heaved and sobbed and ached for him. Was this all that was left for her? A life without his power and hope? All she had left was her child. His child. Their child. Like a wounded bird, Scully left the car and walked to her apartment door. She entered and noticed the room was flooded with the midnight moonlight streaming through her front window. Then everything drained from her body and her briefcase dropped from her hands. Her body drew in a shocked breath at the vision her brain was processing. Mulder sat smiling on her couch, bathed in moonlight. Scully's feet were immobile. Was this real? She had dreamed this moment so many times that it seemed impossible that he was really there. Her face conveyed fear, confusion, hope and sadness all at once. "Scully, I'm here," Mulder said extending his right hand towards her. She trusted her instincts and ran to him. Their arms entwined and they became one. They held on to each other tight and it seemed they would never let go. Their tears soaked each other's hair and their bodies began to rock back and forth, attempting to seek calm. Mulder felt the pressure of Scully's rounded middle and he pulled away, unable to comprehend the thoughts that were answering the questions in his head. He placed a hand on her stomach and looked deep into her eyes for an explanation. Scully giggled through her tears and nodded. " I'm pregnant." "But-I-How?" Mulder stammered. "I was as shocked as you are, Mulder. My only explanation is that, by some miracle, I was ovulating the first time we were together and, well, nature found a way." He drew her back to him and his body was shaking. Just a moment ago he was an orphan with no family to call his own. His sister, father and mother were all dead and he expected that he would live the rest of his life without blood connections. Now this incredible woman carried his child and the future seemed limitless. "Never mind about me," Scully said with concern. "Are you ok? Are you hurt at all?" Dr. Scully began to examine Mulder before he could even answer her. There were some wounds on his face and he looked pale, but she couldn't see any obvious signs of serious injury. "I don't know. I can't remember--I just knew to come here." "We'll need to run some tests. Come on, we're going to Quantico-" "No," Mulder protested. "We're not going anywhere tonight. If there's anything wrong with me it will still be there tomorrow morning. All I want to do tonight is hold you. I need you, now, Scully." She held his face in his hands and stared deep into his hazel eyes. She felt the void within her fill up with his soul. "Mulder, I love you." She had never told him those words which had lived in her heart for so many years. "Scully," his voiced cracked. "You have my heart and my soul. I love you too." Their lips met in a tender embrace and the bond that cleaved them together would never be broken again.
