I just finished watching the season four finale and felt the urge to write this. I appreciate any feedback you might have. As a matter a fact a 10 million dollar government study shows that fan fiction writers live on feedback. You trust the government don't you? Please don't let me starve. This is my first post to this list. Do with what you must with this. X X X X X X X X X X X The Necessary Lie X X X X X X X X X X X J. Edgar Hoover Building Conference Room 1013 Special Agent Doctor Dana Scully fought the tears. She would not cry in front of these people. She refused. And when she set her mind to something that was the way that it was. Period. Section Chief Belvins was watching her closely. He looked suspicious. Shit. Had she blown it? No. There was no way he could know. She cleared her throat and continued. "Early this morning I was called by the police to identify a body." She stopped. The next words out of her mouth would be the subject of her worst nightmare. "Late last night Agent Mulder died from an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound to the head." Belvins' mouth dropped open. Bastard, Scully thought. "Agent Scully, you have my deepest sympathies..." "Thank you sir. But I don't want your sympathy. I want to know why Agent Mulder had to die. I want the people who constructed the subterfuge that caused his death to be brought to justice," Scully said fiercely. "Agent Scully," A familiar voice said from the doorway. She looked up at Skinner. Scully gritted her teeth. She could not deal with Skinner right now. "I am sorry to interrupt but I have an urgent message for Agent Scully," Skinner said. He looked sternly at every person at the table. Almost everyone of them turned from his stone glance. Everyone except Scully. She looked him straight in the eye and defy her actions. "We are finished here. With the death of Agent Mulder the X-files Division will be closed. Agent Scully you will be reassigned," Belvins stated. He looked smug. "That is quite all right Chief Belvins. I don't have much time left. I would rather spend it productively than working for a bunch of power hungry, patronizing, hypocritical, over grown boys who like nothing more than fucking with peoples lives." "Agent Scully are you tendering your resignation?" Belvins asked. Scully smiled and Belvins eyes widened. She was about to tell him what to do with this job when Skinner spoke. "No, she is not. Agent Scully is obviously under an enormous amount of stress. Excuse us." He took Scully by the arm and led her out of the conference room. He knew she was up to something and he did not like being in the dark. "You interrupted the best part," Scully told him. Skinner did not answer. After the outburst in his office earlier this morning he was concerned. He had never seen Scully like this. At the moment Scully was a loose cannon and she had nothing to lose. "I would like you to take a couple of days and get things in order. It that clear Agent Scully," Skinner said sternly. "Yes, SIR! I would like the chance to clean out Agent MulderŐs office first." "Certainly. Take all of the time you need. The reason I came down here was to inform you that your brother called. He said it was urgent." Scully thanked him and began her walk to the basement. People stared. Her secret was out. Everyone knew about the cancer now. They also knew that her partner had committed suicide. Oh, yes the rumor mill was working overtime and everyone was waiting for a big breakdown from the Ice Queen. Scully ignored them just as she always had. She would not let them see how much it bothered her. She owed Mulder that much. Once in the elevator she closed her eyes and let a few tears fall. This was going to be the an extreme test of strength. Her control, which she had perfected over the years, was almost gone. Walking into the office was hard. She shut the door and leaned against it. Taking a deep breath she walked over to the computer. After booting it up she began to transfer all of the content of the hard drive to a back up tape. She turned and stared at the poster behind Mulder's desk as the tape drive ground and whirled. I want to believe. There was no more faith. No more trust. Life as she knew it was over. For Dana Scully change was a constant in life. She had changed schools nine times while growing up. Always in a new town forced to make new friends. Undergraduate school had been the first four years of school that she had been in the same place. Medical school and her residency had been challenging enough that she never really noticed the redundancy. But none of it compared to her time at the x-files. Every day was something new. At first it was Mulder that was new. Mulder and his ideas. They had challenged her. They still did. But it did not matter. It was almost over. She picked up the phone to return her brother's phone call even though she knew what it was about. Margaret Scully's Residence 4:00 pm Dana walked into the kitchen and found just what she expected. Bill sitting at the table while her mother cooked. "You should help Mom," Dana told her brother. She gave him a small smile. It was all she could manage. "Dana. You know I can't cook. Remember the last time I cooked dinner?" "July 4, 1990." "See, you even know the date," Bill teased. "Of course she does. It's not everyday that you have to admit your whole family to the hospital for food poisoning," Margaret said. Dana kissed her mother on the cheek and peeked in the pot. Margaret swatted at her daughters hand. "So how did it go?" Bill asked. He glanced at the man who had entered the room from the other entrance. Scully smiled at him. A full fledged Scully grin. "Fine. I called the section chief a few names that I have always wanted to." "Did they believe you?" Margaret asked. Scully glanced at her mother and then back at the man she had been grinning at. "You told them?" She asked stiffly. She didn't want her family involved in this. Not after all of the death that was already involved. "I had to explain why the rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated," Fox Mulder said with a smirk. Scully was not amused. They had faked his death hoping to get the other players in this game to drop their guard. Scully did not want her mother and brother involved in this mess. "We have to leave. I don't want to put your family in danger." "You really think that it is dangerous for you to be here?" Bill asked. "Yes, I do. I objected to coming here at all but as usual Mulder would not listen to me." "I listened. But where else was I going to go? The Gunmen? Their office is bugged. My mom's? Not after last time." "Last time was your own fault Mulder," Scully told him. She was still irked about Mulder's trip to Rhode Island. Irked was not really then word for it. Highly pissed was more like it. "I don't understand why you had to fake your death Fox," Margaret said. She gave her daughter a look. Scully backed down for her mother's sake. Besides, Mulder knew what she thought of that whole incident. She had made sure of that. "Trust me. It is better this way. If anyone asks you have not seen me. You don't know where I was and you don't know where I am going," Scully told her mother. Margaret frowned. "Where are you going?" Bill asked. "It's better that you don't know. Don't tell anyone that I am alive. Not even Skinner," Mulder said. Scully's eyes darkened. "Especially Skinner. I went to his office this morning to inform him of your death. Guess who was sitting there choking on his Morley?" "He was choking?" "Well, he was after I shoved that cigarette down his throat." "You what?" Bill asked. The Dana he knew would not purposely hurt anyone. Mulder laughed softly. "Well, I wanted them to think that I had lost my mind. What better way that to make that man pay? Besides they blamed it on the cancer." "So you have them convinced that Fox is dead and that you have lost your mind due to the cancer that is spreading," Margaret asked. Dana smiled and nodded. "But Mulder is alive and I am fine," Scully said. While the cancer had not started to spread it could at anytime. Mulder smiled and placed the navy hat on his head. Bill's uniform was a little big but it would do. He thanked Bill again for the clothes. He then turned away to let Dana say goodbye to her family. He looked at his reflection in the mirror in the hallway. His hair was now approximately the same shade as Bill Scully's thanks to Miss Clairol. It was also cut in a military buzz. He was mildly surprised that Scully had not said anything about his hair. The disguise would get him far enough that the consortium might stop looking for a second. At which point he was going to expose them. They were going to expose them. The charade that he and Scully was playing was dangerous. But it was a critical strategic move. They had to find the truth. Because the truth would save them both. Sequels upon request. e-mail goes to mzndg@decaturnet.com -darlene
