So, don't be surprised if you sense that vibe while reading. ************************************************************ Somewhere, nighttime, three months after Mulder was buried... Scully walked up to the door of the coffee shop and paused to take a breath before she got inside. Right away, she spotted the friend she was meeting and went to her table to sit down. Special Agent Monica Reyes smiled up at her as a welcoming sign. Scully uncomfortably grinned back as she signaled the waitress. "Thank you for coming on such a short notice." Scully told Monica. "It's a pleasure." Monica replied. "But, I'm starting to wonder why we always meet in the middle of the night." "And, how can I help you tonight?" the waitress came up to the federal agents to serve them. "A cup of decaf would be fine, thank you!" Scully ordered. "I'm still good with my grape juice." Monica added. "A cup of decaf coming up..." the waitress repeated as she went to the counter to prepare Scully's order. "So?" Monica asked Scully. "I'm sorry!" Scully started. "Would you rather I stop calling you so late?" she tried not to sound insulting. "That's not what I meant, Dana." Monica took Scully's hand in hers. Scully looked at Monica's hand on hers. She was fascinated by her. Monica had such a strong character, but she was so calm. It puzzled Scully. She, herself, might have appeared calm, but on the inside, she was anxious with panic. In opposite to her, Monica had control over her life. Stress was out of the question. "Since Mulder has been abducted, I've been insomniac." Scully admitted. "It began by regular nightmares that haunted my sleeping hours and naps. Then, I started having trouble falling alseep too. And, I find myself waking up many minutes ahead of time." she was cut off by the waitress. "A cup of decaf for the future mom..." the waitress smiled down at her. "What?" Scully mumbled, not wanting her secret to be revealed to Monica just yet. "Well..." the waitress felt a bit bad. "You have that certain glow to you.. Aren't you going to be a mother?" she wondered. "She is!" Monica responded for Scully to make the waitress go away. "You were saying?!" she told Scully to go on with her explanation. "Did John tell you?" Scully judged him too quickly once again. "Oh! Dana!" Monica giggled. "I never mentionned it because you didn't either. But, you know I feel things and, in your case, I knew when I first laid eyes on you." she confessed. "Thank you for respecting my choice." Scully said. "But, don't you see it as a fault from my part? Here you are, being the best friend I've had in years, and I'm keeping secrets from you..." she was intrigued. "Don't worry, Dana!" Monica tried to recomfort her. "I have to earn your trust before you can feel at ease to tell me anything. And, in case you're wondering, you did earn mine... ages ago." she confirmed. "You're being too good for me." Scully pointed out. "Oh! Yes! I was telling you about my sleep disorder. Now, that Mulder has been found... dead... it's been worst." she ended. "Do you want to talk about any of your dreams?" Monica was worried. "My nightmares always include Mulder." Scully felt tears fill up her eyes. "At first, I was dreaming about him being experimented on, in the mother spaceship. Then, my dreams became even darker. I find myself trapped in a very confined environment, searching for a breath of fresh air." she continued. "It seems to me like you're still trying too hard to keep Mulder alive." Monica took a sip of her juice. "Can you explain your theory to me?" she asked. "It's simple, Dana!" Monica whispered. "You still feel close to him and the fact that you miss him makes you imagine what he's going through." she concluded. "Hmmm?!?" Scully was still amazed. "You haven't started your grieving process yet." Monica answered. "You don't want to let go of the idea of Mulder coming back, wether it's alive or to life. And, I think you're trying to put yourself in his place to compensate for his absence." "You're right..." Scully looked down at her cup of decaf coffee and shed a tear. "That's not all, is it?" Monica tried to get the whole truth out of her. "No!..." Scully paused. "Lately, I've been having visions of him." she admitted. "What kind of visions?" Monica wondered. "Sometimes, I enter a room and I see him standing near a window or doorway. He's translucid and silent, as if he was simply looking out for me." Scully confessed. "Maybe he is, Dana..." Monica placed her hand on Scully's shoulder. "But, it's so different..." Scully sobbed. "Different from what?" Monica demanded. "Not long after I started on the x files, my father passed away. A few seconds before my mother called with the sad news, I saw him sitting on my couch, trying to tell me something, as if he was made of skin and bones." Scully confided in Monica. "I can't believe I'm telling you this... I don't even remember if I told Mulder about it!" "I'm glad you're telling me..." Monica smiled to please Scully. "You know I try to keep an open mind about anything and everything." she stopped to think about her words. "Now, I'm curious why your father would appear to you as a ghost in the flesh and Mulder as a ghostly spirit." she added. "Can we take a break from this conversation a few seconds?" Scully asked. "Of course, Dana." Monica replied. "Wait!" she interrupted herself as she thought of something. "Is Mulder the father of your unborn child?" she demanded. "He better be..." Scully seemed to laugh. "If he's not, I'm pregnant with something that has alien DNA." she tried to make a joke. "Were you two ever more than just partners?" Monica made her little investigation. "You're starting to sound like him..." Scully did giggle. "I hope it's a good thing." Monica reacted. "Mulder and I were just good friends, aside from a night when we tried to become lovers." she smiled at the memory. "It didn't work out?" Monica mumbled to imitate an impotent man. "In the contrary..." Scully reassured Monica. "Mulder once said he was a pro." she grinned. "He was... We just never got to try it out, or even speak about it, after it happened. It felt a bit too awkward!" she murmured the last few words. "If it wouldn't have, I would have asked you how you succeeded in doing that..." Monica suddenly made Scully look up at her. "Do you know that I didn't like you at first?" Scully grinned. "Indeed, I do..." Monica laughed. "But, you changed your mind quickly when you found out I had much more in common with Mulder than with John." she drank another sip of her juice. "But, don't get me wrong..." Scully finally decided to taste her decaf coffee. "I've grown to appreciate John a lot." she had to make that precision. "John does grow on you after a while." Monica admitted. "There's only one thing that scares me, though." she waited for Scully's reaction. "What's that?" Scully questionned her. "That you're playing nice with me because I remind you of him." Monica really worried. "How could you think something like that?" Scully asked. "Considering everything you told me about him, I am starting to think you are associating us, as if he was melting into me." Monica supposed. "I would never do that!" Scully sounded insulted. "You have an altogether different personality that makes you outstanding. And, I might have misjudged you at the beginning, but you proved me wrong." she confessed. "Not anyone proves a Scully wrong..." Monica kid her. "It might be early to ask you this, but would you be my child's godmother?" Scully shouted out of the blue. "Wow!" Monica was clearly surprised by this request. "It might be early to answer, but yes!" she smiled. "Wonderful!" Scully replied. "But, don't you have anyone else closer to you that would want this more than me?" Monica demanded. "My mother doesn't want too take the risk because of her age and she's all I've got besides you." Scully confessed. "Who will be the godfather? Skinner?" Monica asked. "Actually, he doesn't want too either because of the risk in our job." Scully sighed. "But, I have found the perfect trio... The Lone Gunmen." she told Monica. "Who?" she responded. "Friends of Mulder and I." Scully didn't want to give out more information on them. "You'll meet them soon enough." she promised. "With a name like that, I can't wait..." Monica giggled. "I've already told them about you and they said the same..." Scully laughed back as she looked at her watch. "Look at the time..." she exclamated. "We've got to go back to bed if we want to look proper at work tomorrow." she said as she got up and left enough change on the table for her cup of decaf and Monica's juice. "Thank you for calling me." Monica handed out her hand for Scully to shake. "Thank you for joining me." Scully gave her a hug instead. "Sweet dreams!" Monica mumbled as she walked out of the coffee shop. "I'll try!" Scully smiled as she followed, but went in another direction. A few minutes later, Monica parked her car in front of a nice big house. She got out and walked to the front porch. She took her keys out of her purse and unlocked the door. She got in silently and locked the door behind her. She undressed as she walked up the stairs and into the master bedroom. She slid under the covers. "Hi!" a voice mumbled. "She okay?" it yawned. "I thought you were sleeping... I didn't want to wake you up, John!" Monica answered. "I was waiting for you to comeback and watch my back." Doggett smiled as he turned around to cuddle up against Monica. "She wants me to be the godmother." she confessed. "That's great!" Doggett kissed her forehead. "But, how is she?" "She's doing alright!" Monica nearly lied. "She still has a long way to go."
