I could see you staring at the television screen, waiting for the ball to drop, a look of anticipation slowly spreading across your face. I've often wondered what would happen if we ever spent New Years together. Would we kiss, or would you just make a joke about aliens flying through New York in their shiny UFOs. As the countdown to the year 2000 began, I sub-consciencely wet my lips, hoping that I would soon feel your lips against mine. I wanted to look over at you, but I knew that if I did, I'd loose the control that was keeping my emotions from bubbling over; the control that was keeping the walls I have carefully erected around my heart intact. Even after all that we've been through, I don't want you to see me loose control. I don't want you to think I'm weak. However, as I feel you moving closer to me, all thoughts vanish from my mind and I finally turn to face you. I can see the questions swirling around in your eyes, and I know you can see the answers reflecting back from my own. I know this because I saw you smile as you leaned into kiss me. I have to admit that I almost fell to my knees from the sheer tenderness of the way you kissed me. After you broke away, I immediately missed the warmth of your body near mine. My pulse was pounding so loudly in my ears that I almost didn't hear you say," Well, the world didn't end." "No, it didn't," I answered back, hoping that my voice didn't betray what I was feeling. " Happy New Years, Scully." " Happy New Years, Mulder." But as you put your arm around my shoulders and lead me down the hall, I knew it really would be a Happy New Year.
