"I understand you lost your sister a few years ago, Bill." Dr.
Kosseff murmurs.

Bill nods, his face closed. "She was murdured."

She is startled. "*Really.* Well. I'm sorry to hear that. How
do you feel this has affected your relationship with your family?"

"Hasn't," Bill snorts. "... Well. Been keeping a closer eye on Dana."

"And you feel she is unappreciative?"

He hesitates. "Dana-- she... likes her way."

"And Agent Mulder is her way?" Bill colors, but she presses further.
"Bill, do you feel Agent Mulder threatens your family like a
stranger, or like an older brother?"

"Mulder is *not* a family member!" he spits.

"Yes, Fox is very much a member of the family," replies Maggie
warmly.

"You don't associate him with the changes that have taken place
in your family?"

She hesitates. "You mean Melissa's death... Dana's cancer."

Dr. Kosseff nods encouragingly.

"Fox carries around more guilt than any young man should," she
says. "There's no way I would allow anyone to accuse him."

"But I'm interested in what you *feel*, Maggie, apart from not
wanting to hurt--"

"Fox is the closest friend Dana has. A mother knows when her
feelings aren't a part of her daughter's happiness."

"Charles Scully?" Dr. Kosseff can hear the hum of traffic in
the background.

"Hello?"

"Your mother already spoke to you about my call, is that right,
Charles?"

"Yeah, that's right." His voice is strained over the phone.

"I just want to help your family as best I can, Charles, and as a
professional I want the get the entire picture." The doctor is
smug. She never thought the others would give in and allow her
to call him.

"Okay."

"I know your dad passed away not long ago. Do you view Agent
Mulder as a... father figure?"

"Do I *what*?"

She shifts a little in her seat, her skirt clinging to the couch.
"Certainly as ... important, as family, in my life." She stares
straight ahead. "I wouldn't say he belonged in... *my* family."

"I'm told that law enforcement partners can grow closer than
husband and wife. Do you feel that is the case with Agent Mulder
and yourself?" Dr. Kosseff offers mildly.

"Agent Mulder and I are not intimate," she says coldly, backbone
straight.

"So, as it is, you will feel perfectly comfortable when Agent
Mulder does develop a romantic -- intimate -- relationship with
someone else."

There is an interminable pause.
