From: Erinn Unger Date: Mon, 05 Jul 1999 19:57:27 PDT Subject: fanfic Hi, my name is Erinn and I have some fanfic! I'd love it if you would post it! Thanx! " Osiris " Prolog: In a dying Scully's point of view I heard familiar footsteps, but because of the fogginess of my mind I couldn't be sure. Then I smelled him, the dark, masculine scent of cologne and salt hanging in the stale air, but also mingling with the stink of disease and suffering. " Scully? " He sounded so far away, in the outer most reaches of my imagination. Slowly pushing my eyes open with all my strength I saw him. Oh, how I wanted to feel my Mulder, to touch the rough stubble on my partner's cheek. Knowing that he would protect me. Though I knew he could not, nobody could harbor me from this malignant intruder, an outlander that had turned my body on itself, to consume itself. Diving into his eyes, I could see all the loneliness and fear that came with the knowledge that I was dying. " Scully? " Mulder asked me, twining his fingers around mine as if he could pluck me from the brink of death. " What is the thing you want most in the world?" I didn't even need to think, I'd known for a long time. " I want to have a child. " I murmured quietly, knowing that wish would never be granted. Mulder's eyes drowned in guilt, anger, and fear. Suddenly a sharp beeping noise knocked me out of my sorrowful reverie. It was my heart monitor, the glowing streak plummeted as the pain in my skull steadily increased and my eyes glassed over in misery. Amid the turmoil of my family wailing and the nurses poking me with needles and jabbing furiously at computer keyboards the only thing that remained solid and stable was Mulder. So I did what I had been yearning to do for what felt like centuries. I brought his hand up to my quivering lips and kissed it, trembling with pain and fear. " I love you, Mulder." I said, knowing he had heard me, for reflected in his eyes were love and passion. Without the slightest warning the tormenting throbbing in my cranium became unbearable as the cancerous invader tore through and entered my brain. A piercing cry of torture leaped from my throat and my body lurched violently. I could hear Mulder calling my name anxiously as I left, but the last thought that entered my mind was, cancer won this battle, but it won't win the next. F.B.I Morgue 8:45 Monday August.9, 1997 A lifeless body lies in a quiet, cold morgue. The sounds of coroners whispering into their microphones echo through the partially open steel doors. A young woman creeps stealthily through the metal doors to the cadaver's side. Her dark hazel eyes study the body and her hand instinctively reaches for latex gloves. Snapping them on she can feel the corpse's iciness under her practiced fingers. Lifting the pale eyelid she realizes the iris is not bright anymore, it is now lifeless. The turquoise that was once so vibrant with the joys of life, is now the color of the graying walls surrounding the medical examiner and her patient. The tiny woman jumps as her cellphone rings. Fumbling nervously through her laboratory coat she finds it and flips it open. " Dr. Erinn Waters speaking." She says shivering as the refrigerated cold slips into her jacket and tiny puffs of steam emerge from her pursed, rose red lips. She hears a hesitant gulp from the other end. " Hello?" She says waiting, impatient to start her work. " Uh, Hello my name is Fox Mulder and I'm an agent from the FBI. My partner, Dana Katherine Scully, died of uh unexplained cancer, and I requested an autopsy. I was wondering if I could watch you? for uh, personal purposes." Agent Mulder says in an unsure, trembling voice. Ah, she was his friend, The coroner than thinks of the thick tone of voice he had used when saying her name; and he loves her above anyone else? even his sister. Shaking those thoughts from her head, she glances at the toe tag. She scrapes a thin film of frost off and reads the information aloud. " Scully, Dana, middle initial: K, age thirty-three, 120 pounds, auburn hair and blue eyes." The young medical examiner hears silence at the other end. " Agent Mulder?" She asks. " Scully? " He whispers painfully. " Fox Mulder you will see your partner tonight, just not in the way you might imagine. " The coroner clicks off the phone abruptly ending the enigmatic message. Smashing the cell phone against the stucco a display of sparks jump from the plaster to the frosted floor, dying immediately. With the sizzling remains of her cell phone slumping against the icy wall, she turns hastily back to her work. Grasping one of the body's arms, Erinn turns it over. She winces when it's face hits the gurney. The coroner leans over the neck and moves the meager auburn hair the corpse has, since with cancer comes premature baldness. She reveals a tiny scar, almost invisible. Picking a scalpel softly from her coat pocket, Erinn makes a swift, clean incision. Looking suspiciously around the room for any signs of life among the cadavers, she decides the dead will be her only witnesses. Satisfied Erinn reaches into her suit jacket, revealing a tiny, glass vial. Shaking it near her outstretched palm, an almost microscopic computer chip leaps out into her cupped hand. With the precious object glinting in the pale light the medical examiner inserts it into the pocket of skin on the back of the cadaver's neck. Brandishing a sterilized needle and surgical thread she nimbly sews the incision closed, hopefully never to be disturbed again. " Hey Erinn! What are ya doin'?" a young blond haired youth yells through the door. With the shattered silence hanging around her she opens the door a crack. " Trying to wake the dead. " The head medical examiner hisses, her hazel eyes darkening with anger and her mind wondering how he knew she was in there. He laughs at her answer, invisible to her iciness. " Who is it? What happened to it? " He asks, trying to pass through her body. " Unidentified. Cause of death is unknown. Go help Greg with the GS victim. Tell him the boss sent you." Erinn lies, hurriedly pushing him out the door. He gives her a suspicious look, but bends his head at her authority and shuffles away. Silently closing the door, she leans her head on the cold metal, resting for a moment. Turning back into the room and locking the heavy steel doors, she prepares for the ritual. The young woman breathes deeply, letting a few strands of her earthy brown hair fall into her eyes. She slips her gloves off and lets them fall softly to the floor. Erinn presses her bare hands on the body, one on it's head and one over it's heart, for that is where the Egyptians assumed a person's thoughts and intelligence came from. Unfortunately they were wrong. The small woman concentrates, sweat beading at her brow and her wolf like eyes seeming to bore holes through the corpse, looking for even a slight flicker of movement. She utters these words, not spoken in over two thousand years, " An ka im ankum sethim. An ba im ankum sethim Thy body is young again. Thy soul is young again. Et ye hapium han ank hapium. Let my fertility be thy fertility. Osiris hash rihen ank rom Osirim. Osiris has risen thy from afterlife. Et ye angy han ank angy. Let my energy be thy energy. " With that last chant the young coroner hit the concrete floor, suddenly weak and groaning in pain. Stifling her cries she pulls herself, trembling, from the hard, frozen, ground. A smile spreads slowly across Erinn's pale face as a shiver ripples through the cadaver. Under the snowy white sheet she sees the corpse's chest heave up and down and the lips open to welcome the first breaths of life. Leaning herself against the frosty metal of the gurney, Erinn reaches weakly for her neck, around which a golden Ankh is strung. After carefully unclasping it with her shaking fingers, she clutches the amulet and waves it above the quivering body. " Hom ank nems, hom ank moui. Open thy eyes, open thy mouth." Erinn's low shuddering voice sings. Dana Scully springs awake, her eyes darting wildly in every direction and her limbs quaking. Her skin starts losing its bluish color and her body steadies it's shaking. Erinn lays her hand gently on the flailing woman's shoulder and concentrates, letting her eyes focus and conjuring up all the calm in her body and releasing it in a wave over Scully. Immediately the woman relaxes and her eyes fixate themselves on Erinn's. " Whhhath hauppenedd? " The agent asks in slurred speech, for her vocal cords are just regenerating. Erinn calmly chants over the dazed Scully, "Zakhun. Remember." As memories flood into her mind Scully's now bright blue eyes widen in astonishment. " I? died. " She whispers trying not to believe it, but her skepticism slowly disappears as she looks quietly around the room. She's sitting on a morgue gurney with sheets wrapped around her, the toetag she's wearing is cutting off the circulation in her foot, and the tiny woman staring up at her with dark, hazel eyes, a rosy complexion, and a broad smile on her face, is wearing a white laboratory coat with a badge that reads: F.B.I Morgue Head Medical Examiner Erinn Waters. It's almost too much evidence for the stunned Scully to handle. She slides off the gurney as Erinn wraps a lab coat over her hunched, shivering shoulders. She rubs Scully's arms to get the circulation going. Looking down at her feet she realizes Scully's shoes are ashes now, because she forgot to save them. Erinn scowls as she slowly takes her shoes off and shoves them on Scully's feet. They're a bit small, but they will have to do, Erinn thinks as she gingerly steps upon the frozen concrete floor. Unlocking the steel doors, she urges Scully to follow close behind her and to keep concealed in her buttoned trench coat. The agent's legs shudder violently as veins flowing with oxygenated blood run into the muscle and nerves renew throughout her body. Erinn walks briskly through the halls, eager to get to her office, out of the range of nosy eyes and ears. " Hello Dr. Unger, who is this? " A man calls out of nowhere. Erinn halts abruptly, almost sending Scully skidding down the hall. " Oh, uh, hi Greg. This is nueropathologist Akira Hendricks. She's helping me with that cancer victim." The startled medical examiner explains to a silver haired man lounging behind a counter with a cup of steaming coffee and a sandwich. " Uh, what are you doing? " Erinn asks curiously, hiding her feet from view. " Oh, you know how I get an immense appetite after doing a rather messy autopsy on a GS victim. I mean I swear, he still had gallons of blood in 'im." Greg says, smirking at the green appearance of both the women's faces. " Yeah, well I'll be in my office, so please don't disturb me. Oh, a man about six feet tall, with gelled brown hair, hazel eyes, and wearing a suit is going to walk in here and tell you Erinn Unger said he could watch an autopsy being performed. Just point him to my office." The coroner says, gently tugging Scully to her office, all the while keeping her bare feet out of view. " Agent Scully, I will explain everything after your partner gets here. " Erinn says reaching for the phone. F.B.I Morgue 10:20 P.M. Monday August.9, 1997 Agent Mulder threads his way through the narrow doors to the receptionist's desk. Lounging against the table is a silver haired man sipping a boiling mug of black coffee. Mulder flashes his badge, wishing Scully could be standing next to him. " Agent Fox Mulder, Erinn Waters called me here to watch an autopsy. " He says, wondering what Erinn meant by " you will see your partner tonight, just not in the way you might imagine. " The man directs Mulder to an office down the polished hall. Stepping hesitantly down the corridor, he sees the steel doors of a refrigeration unit in the distance. Shuddering, he knocks. " Come in, Agent Mulder. " He hears an excited voice exclaim. Pondering how an autopsy could make anyone happy, especially one performed on Scully he opens the door. Unprepared for what greets his eyes, he just stands there, his eyes locked in Scully's gaze. Erinn speechlessly leaves the room, leaving the reunited partners together, alone. Mulder crosses the room; his eyes still locked on Scully. Afraid she would shatter if he touched her, Mulder just poises there in awe. She can't be real, she has to be a hybrid, he thinks suspiciously. All his doubts of her authenticity are erased when she touches him. The same gentle touch he had received before she died. Silent tears start streaming uncontrollably down his face. He realizes she does not crack when he holds her, tight, as if to not ever let her get away from him again. Feeling her enveloping warmth against his body he recognizes she was the one he had been searching for so long. Scully's tears wet his cheeks, so he hugs her tighter, trying hard not to cry himself. He puts his chin on her neck breathing in the smells he associates with Scully. A slight hint of her perfume, the smell of hospital rooms? and death. He raises his head dizzily. " You were dead. I-I saw you. No pulse, no breath. How? " She presses a finger to his lips silencing him. Scully clears her throat; " I don't know. " Her eyes are a lively blue once again and her skin is rosy and soft Mulder notices. Lifting her finger from his lips, he closes his eyes and slides his hands along her face, memorizing it, locking the moment away in his mind in case it never happens again. " Excuse me Agent Mulder and Scully for disturbing you. I need to explain how this all came to be. " Erinn says sneaking in and gesturing for them to sit down. Mulder and Scully embarassly separate, perching in the chairs. The coroner takes a deep breath and relaxes, clearing her mind. " The ancient Egyptians held much deep magic. I went to Egypt and a priest of the forgotten religion met me and decided he'd teach me. The first and only thing I learned before he died was how to bring a person back from death." Erinn pauses letting this all sink in. " I am part of the shadow government, but I am not like the others. They are ruthless, killing machines, and they may as well kill me because I am telling you this. I implanted the same microchip Agent Scully had removed back into her neck. It blocks unwanted memories but also impedes the cancer formed by the radiation you were exposed to, Agent Scully. " The young coroner explains spreading her fingers out on her desk nervously. " Scully, you were subjected to radiation so your ova could be utilized for the creation of alien hybrids, but Egyptian magic has restored your fertility and you will now be able to have the child you have always dreamed of. " Scully stares at Erinn, wanting to believe it, but retaining the last strands of her skepticism. Mulder grins, his suspicion gone. Erinn pulls a sheet of paper from a desk drawer; it is Scully's certificate of death. She hands it to Mulder telling him to sign it. " Why? " He asks bewildered. " So the rest of the shadows won't know agent Scully is alive until I am dead. " The medical examiner whispers touching her flashing Ankh with her trembling hand. Mulder searches the woman's face for any signs of regret or sadness but finds none, only swampy hazel eyes filled with fear, and silent courage. " Excuse me." Scully utters touching Mulder's arm lightly before she slips out the door. He takes one more curious look at Erinn than eagerly follows Scully. Alex Krychek seems to suddenly fabricate in the empty room. Erinn nervously stands up and backs away from her assassin. She grasps her Ankh and breaths, " Trohad reh Osiris, trohad reh Isis. Protect me Osiris, protect me Isis. " Krychek smirks, hissing, " Your stupid little spells won't work on me this time, Erinn. " His eyes flash with murderous greed as he grabs Erinn around the neck and squeezes. She gasps for breath as he holds a silenced pistol up to her throbbing temple. " What did you do to Agent Scully? What did you tell her? " Krychek demands his arm tightening around her throat. " I will reveal nothing. " Erinn chokes out, jabbing him in the stomach violently. Resisting the blows he presses the gun against her temple harder. " I will take it with me to the grave. " The coroner whispers setting her jaw and closing her eyes. Erinn slides quietly to the floor. With blood pooling around his shoes, Krychek flips the fire alarm and snatches a bottle of gasoline from his pocket. Dousing the dead woman he lights a match and flings it onto her body. The stench of burning flesh envelops the office as the silent assassin steals quietly through the door. F.B.I Morgue Tuesday August, 10.1997 4:29 A.M. Morning mist shrouds the burnt out building like ghoulish spirits coming out to play. Agents Mulder and Scully arrive quietly, flashing their badges almost unconsciously. Scully stands in the fog, afraid at what she might discover inside the smoking shell. Grasping Mulder's arm they enter reluctantly. Stepping softly over debris Scully's nose crinkles at the stink of death, a thing she has encountered, but does not understand. Something glints in Mulder's flashlight beam. With a swift touch of her hand she stops him. Stooping to examine the object more closely she realizes it's Erinn's cherished Ankh, the symbol of eternal life in ancient Egypt. Scully snaps gloves on to pick it up, but she finds it's attached to something. Or someone she realizes fearfully as she sees the figure of a woman underneath layers of ash. Taking a deep breath she gently brushes away the soot and debris, revealing two empty eye sockets staring back at her. Burying her hands in the slag she uncovers the golden clasp. Unhooking the sacred amulet, she respectfully places it around her own neck. Glancing at the remains, Scully sees a round chasm in the cranium and a spent bullet shell resting next to Erinn's body. Her shoulders sag sorrowfully as she whispers; " Death finally got her. " Silently fingering the Ankh she gets to her feet from the dusty ashes. Stepping mournfully away, the partners see the hushed body of Erinn Unger disappear under the ghostly haze. Glossary: Ankh: Ancient Egyptian amulet or charm.
