Summary: Scully's thougths after Padgett's comments
outside his cell.

She opened her eyes and realized it had gotten very
dark. Where had the time gone? Years passed like
minutes and yet stretched out before her, unending.
Darkness...some things were better left there, and
yet, she hadn't chosen to bring this one to light.
She had even tried to suppress it, and over the years
had denied it over and over, never talking about it,
never allowing it to show or get out of control until
she herself had begun to believe. Oh sure, it had
come up out of the darkness, almost touching the
surface a few time; in the hallway when he had almost
kissed her, the soft touch of a hand in passing. But
it always slipped back down again to be denied once
more. Sometimes that darkness was comforting,
familiar, far easier to control than the swirl of
emotions; the feelings, desires, needs that rose.

But this time Scully could not deny it. Someone else
had seen it. He had looked into her eyes and seen in
her soul that which she was trying in vain to hide.
She wondered, did *he* ever see it? No, surely Mulder
hadn't...

"I've made a mistake," the writer had said. "I've
written that Agent Scully falls in love, but that is
obviously impossible." And with the next words came
an awareness she'd hidden from, suppressed for so
long. "Agent Scully is already in love."

The words rang in her head, spilling into her heart,
the one place she knew she couldn't deny then. Yes,
darkness, that is where they belonged, but here they
were, out in the light. She could analyze,
rationalize, use logic and science, but she couldn't
put them back, back into the darkness.

Slowly, she reached over and turned on a small lamp on
the table next to her. She squinted her eyes at the
sudden invasion of light. She continued to blink
until she adjusted to the light. Yes, the light would
take some getting used to, she decided. But it seemed
it was here to stay. She played with the idea in her
mind, allowing it to direct her thinking, to take her
wherever it willed. Maybe it wasn't such a bad thing,
after all, she thought to herself, a small smile
playing upon her lips.

=====
Scully: Mulder, it is such a gorgeous day outside. Have you ever entertained the idea of
trying to find life on this planet?
Mulder: I have seen the life on this planet, Scully, and that is exactly why I am looking
     elsewhere.
