Mulder grumbled slightly in his sleep, and turned over. "Mulder? Come on, Mulder, open your eyes." Painfully, his eyes fluttered open, and he smiled when he saw Scully standing next to his bed once more. Then he winced when his bruised left cheek reminded him that smiling was bad. "Scully. What are you doing here?" "I wanted to talk to you, Mulder. Mind if I sit down?" He scooted over on his bed to make room for here. "Not at all." He waited patiently for her to sit down and get comfortable. "What did you want to talk about?" She cleared her throat, and if he hadn't known better, Mulder would have sworn she was nervous. "Do you remember what you said to me just before I left your room earlier?" "Of course. I told you I love you. Why?" Scully just blinked at him for a moment , thrown a little off balance by his casualness. She cleared her throat again. "What did you mean by that?" "Well, just what I said. You know, that I love you." Where was she going with this? "That's not what I meant." "Well, I don't see how I can get any clearer than that, Scully." She sighed. "In what context?" Now he was really confused. "'In what context' what?" "In what context do you love me?" "Huh?" "How do you love me?" She was making this entirely too complicated. "Scully, I ~love~ you." "I love you, too, Mulder. But loving someone and being in love with someone are two entirely different things." "Oh." Now he got it. She wanted to know if he was in love with her. Well, that made sense. He'd probably want to know, too. The only question was, what did she want to hear? Did she want the real, God's honest truth? He couldn't tell. On the other hand, he couldn't lie to her. He'd never been able to before, and he sure wouldn't be able to now, not with his mind as groggy as it was. Scully watched the comprehension cross his face, then he saw the traces of panic flit across it, too, until he forced hi face to be neutral. "What do you want to hear, Scully?" She sighed in exasperation. "The truth, Mulder. Do you think I want to hear lies? Don't we get enough of those at work?" "Yeah, we do." "But I don't want you to say something that you think I want to hear, or something you're not ready to say. Just be honest with me, Mulder. Like you always are." "Okay, Scully. I'm in love with you. I love you and I'm in love with you." She inhaled sharply, and looked down. "Damn," he whispered. "Scully? I'm sorry. But you said you wanted the truth and that's what you got...Sorry." "Don't apologize, Mulder." She looked up and Mulder was surprised. She actually had tears in her eyes. "Don't ever apologize for loving someone. Remember? Love means never having to say you're sorry." "Okay, then, I'm not sorry. I have no remorse what-so-ever for being in love with you. I can't help my feelings, so why should I apologize for them? But, Scully?....please don't cry. A confession of love shouldn't make someone cry." "Actually, Mulder, people do tend to cry when someone tells them that they are loved. It's a natural reaction." "Yeah, I guess. If it brings you that much agony, why not cry?" he asked, a hint of self-deprecation in his voice. "Who said anything about agony? I'm talking about when you finally find out that someone feels the same way about you as you do about them." He didn't dare hope. "What do you mean?" She swallowed nervously, then leaned forward and pressed her lips against his. After several moments of his initial shock, he slid his hand up to the back of her neck and pulled her closer. Relieved, Scully relaxed into the kiss and let herself enjoy it. Then Mulder pulled away suddenly. "What?" she asked, now slightly panicked. "Isn't this the part where you hit me?" "What?" He gestured to his left cheek. "You did that to me." She was now thoroughly confused. "Huh?" "When I kissed you on the Queen Anne, you decked me." "You never kissed me on the Queen Anne. What are you talking about, Mulder?" "In 1939." She suddenly realized what he was talking about. He meant all that nonsense he'd been talking about earlier. Maybe it wasn't nonsense. She decided to give him the benefit of the doubt. "And why exactly did I hit you, Mulder?" "Because you thought I was completely crazy. I kept talking about being from the future. Then I told you-well, I guess it wasn't you, actually, but she looked exactly like you. Anyway, I told you that if you didn't turn the boat around, then we'd both, very likely, cease to exist. Then I said, 'So in case we never meet again..." like I was Don Juan or something, and kissed you. You didn't appreciate it too much, obviously, because I got a black eye for my troubles. But you believed me, anyway." "Hmm," she said thoughtfully. "I can't imagine why I would hit you for kissing me. Not when you have such astounding kissing abilities." She gently stroked his cheek. "Sorry I hit you, Mulder." "I think I can find it in my heart to forgive you." "Good. Because I'm in love with you, too, and it would be very difficult on our relationship if you couldn't forgive me." Mulder grinned, despite the protests his cheek made, and his whole face lit up. "Though you will have to find some way to make amends." "What exactly do you have in mind, Agent Mulder?" Scully asked, a grin to match his. "Oh, you'll find out." With that, he pulled her closer and kissed her again. THE END
