Sure, it was a cheesy way to end a series, but he just didn't know what else to say. How *did* one ride off into the sunset with something like this? His wife came into the room with a fresh glass of iced tea and set it down on the desk, peering over his shoulder to catch a glimpse of his finale. "Is THAT how you're going to end it?" "Hey! No fair. I'm not done yet," he whined. She smirked. "Looks like you are. Please don't tell me that's how you're going to end this." He rubbed his weary eyes and slumped in his chair. "I don't know what else to say. I guess I want to leave some options open for the future." "Oh puh-lease. After everything you've put your characters AND your fans through, you've got to give them something more. How about a nice little smut scene? Show all those internet writers how it should be done." "I can't write a smut scene! That would seriously compromise the integrity!" "Of what? Of whom?" She crossed her arms and arched an eyebrow in his direction. "You just don't understand," he said weakly. "The HELL I don't! Now you go back to that keyboard and write something else, mister. Something that doesn't include angst or guilt or dead people or, or, or aliens or supersoldiers!" Her voice rose with frustration on every word. She was getting angry. "Hey, come on now. Don't get upset with me. It's *my* work, after all." She plopped down on the old leather couch and sighed. "I know, but as a fan of *your* work, I want more. I want a happy ending, and god knows everyone else does too." "But that's not realistic - life is full of unhappy endings," he argued. "And that's exactly my point." He stared at the last sentence again, the wheels turning in his mind. "I don't know..." "It's your last one. Let them kiss again or find their son. Leave them with something good." After a long moment of silence, she slapped her thighs and stood. "Well, I won't bother you anymore. The kids are going to be home soon and I've got to get supper started. Just think about what I said, hmmm?" She leaned in to kiss his forehead and ran her fingers over his lips before taking her leave. "Hey," he called to her. She paused at the door and turned to him. "What?" "I love you, Scully." "Yeah, I know," she said, a smile creeping over her face. "I love you too, Mulder. Now get busy and write me that happy ending." ----------------------------------------------------- Author's Notes: Yeah, I know. It's a little bizarre, but I've had this idea in my head for a while. It began last year when folks on the mailing lists were trying to guess how the finale would play out. Someone (and I can't remember who) mentioned it would be funny if the last scene was of Mulder and Scully in bed, waking up from a long, effed-up dream. A la Bob Newhart, I think it was. My version is a little more along of the lines of how Roseanne ended, though. Instead, we got Seinfeld. Oh well. That's why there's fanfic.
