AUTHOR'S RAMBLINGS:This story is yet again 100% fluff...I started writing it after I made the softball team...I was like high on happiness(like that ever happens anymore). "Picnic Fun" By:Krystine "Do we HAVE to go???" Agent Fox Mulder whined to his partner, Dana Scully. "Mulder, you are going with me. No if, ands, or buts about it. I went with you to that damn stupid rock concert last month. You owe me." Scully shot back. "Okay, I'll go with you, but only because you went with me to the concert." Scully had been trying to convince Mulder to go with her to the annual FBI Softball Game and Picnic. Usually, Mulder was teh one trying to convince Scully to go somewhere, but today the tables were turned. Scully could not understand why Mulder didn't want to go to the picnic. She wondered if it he was just being a baby or if it had something to do with Samantha. "Mulder," she started quietly, "why don't you want to with me?" "It's got nothing to do with you," he replied. A long silence followed. "Mulder?" "What?" "I'm coming over." Before he could respond, she'd hung up the phone and was already out the door. Dana arrived at Mulder's apartment fifteen minutes later. She knocked on the door to the apartment. "It's open," Mulder called. Dana opened the door and walked in. She found Mulder lying on his couch. She could see the dried tear tracks on his cheeks. "Mulder, what's wrong?" He sat up and motioned for her to sit next to him. Dana sat down and looked at Mulder with her icy blue eyes waiting for a response. "When I was young, every year, my father would take Sam and me to the annual 'Father/Son Softball Game & Picnic'. Even though Sam was a girl, she came with us. She would play with all of the boys and love every second of it. I still remember the last picnic Sam came to. It was August 9, 1973. She scored the winning run of the softball game for us. I can still see the smile on her face. That was the last happy memory I have of my childhood. A little over two months later, Sam was taken. You know that I was always blamed for it. After that, my father wouldn't acknowledge my presence except for when he would hit me. We never went to the picnic after that. I don't think either of us could think of anything besides the smile on Sam's face when the picnic was mentioned. That's why I didn't want to go Dana. Because I didn't want to have to deal with those memories." "Oh Mulder, I'm so sorry that I forced you into saying yes. If I had known..." "There was no way for you to know Dana, no one knew." "Mulder, I'll understand if you say no, but will you go to the picnic with me? I think it's high time we made some new memories--together. I'm not saying for you to forget you memories with Sam, I think you should just add some new ones to the collection with me." Mulder thought about tthis for a good ten minutes before responding to Scully. "Sc--Dana," Mulder began, "yes, I'll go with you. I want to enjoy myself and have the most fun I've had in a while." "I'm really happy that you've accepted Mulder. When I get home I'm going to call Skinner and pull a few strings to make sure we both have the time of our lives." Scully left Mulder's apartment a little while later. And, as promised, shd called Skinner when she arrived home. On the day of the picnic, Scully picked Mulder up at 11:00 a.m. She knocked on his door and was greeted with his normal response: "It's open," he yelled with his mouth full of toothpaste. "You know Mulder, if it wasn't me at the door, you could've been dead. But I know you knew that, right?" Scully said while entering his apartment. "I knew it was you Scully," Mulder replied while walking out of the bedroom pulling his navy blue FBI tee-shirt over his head. "Oh? And how did you know? Should I call you the Stupid-Ass Yappi from now on?" Scully joked. "No, it's simple actually. I know because I called your apartment and there was no answer." Mulder replied smugly. "Sure. Fine. Whatever." "Let's not re-live THAT nightmare Scully." "You ready to go yet, Mulder???" Scully asked. "Yup. Let's blow this hellhole." They arrived at the park at 11:42 a.m. Not long after their arrival, they were each given a purple hat to signify what team they were on. Mulder and Scully's team was out in the field first. Skinner was the captain and was putting players into positions. "Scully, do you have any preference as to where you play?" Skinner asked. "Yes, sir. Shortstop. And no smart-ass comments please." she replied. "You got it Scully. What about you Mulder?" "Third base would be great." "Get to it then." After all the players were in position, they umpire shouted, "PLAY BALL!!!" The first pitch was thrown. Agent Thompson hit a line drive right at Scully--which she caught. The rest of the inning went rather quickly. Then it was their turn at bat. Scully was up second, followed by Mulder. Skinner got up to bat. He hit a pop fly to left field which was caught. Now it was Scully's turn. She got up the the plate. The first pitch was a ball. The second, she swung at and fouled off. This made the outfielders move in even closer than they already had. This pissed Scully off. "Why the hell do they think that just because I'm a woman and on the short side, I can't hit the ball? Well fuck that!! I'm showing them up." The next pitch was Scully's 'sweet pitch' a little low and outside. She took the opportunity and smacked it out over the center fielder's head. "That'll show them," she thought as she rounded second. Scully was held up at third only for the fact that the center fielder had one hell of an arm. She saw Mulder get up to the plate. "Come on Mulder! You can do it!! Bring me home!!" she shouted. Mulder hit the first pitch thrown. Pop fly to second base which was caught. Scully tagged up and headed for home. The second baseman saw her going and threw the ball home. Scully knew it was going to be close, so she slid. "SAFE!!" the umpire yelled. Scully got up and ran toward the dugout--and into Mulder's arms. "Great job Scully!!" Mulder said while hugging her fiercely. The whole team was cheering and patting Scully on the back. Just then Skinner asked her, "Where'd you learn to play like that, Scully?" "My brothers, and I played for my high school." she replied with a smile. "Come on team! We've got one more out before we're in the field again! Who's up?" Skinner yelled. About two hours later, the game was over. Scully and Mulder's team had won. The final score was 1-0. Scully's run was the only run of the game. "I'm starving! Let's get something to eat." Mulder said as he put his arm around Scully's shoulders. When they got to the picnic area, they burst out laughing. Skinner was wearing an apron that said, "Kiss the cook--or he'll shoot ya!" Scully and Mulder got their food. Suddenly, Scully handed Mulder her plate and said, "I'll be right back." Scully walked behind the grill and pulled Skinner's face down to her level and kissed him on the cheek. "What was that for, Scully?" Skinner asked in shock. "Read your apron! I didn't want to get shot!" she said while laughing. Skinner and Mulder began to laugh. Scully walked back over to Mulder and took her plate from him. "C'mon, let's go siet down and eat." Mulder and Scully sat down under a big oak tree and ate their cheeseburgers. After they were done, Scully got up and threw their trash away. As she was about to sit down, Mulder grabbed her around the waist and pulled her into her lap with her back to his chest. "I had a great time today. Thank you for convincing me to come, Dana." "No problem Mulder, what are best friends for?" Scully turned her head to face Mulder. They looked into eachothers' eyes for a few seconds...then it happend--they kissed. After six years of partnership, they finally kissed. They didn't know it, but Skinner had been watching the whole time. "It's about damn time!!" he thought. Then he realized it. He was finally going to collect in teh office pool. "YES!!! Five-hundred bucks baby!!" Scully and Mulder stood up and walked hand in hand to Scully's car. They had decided to go back to Scully's place to finish what they had started with out prying eyes watching their every move.
