Thanks!!! ****** Tonight I try to find sleep, but it eludes me. I cannot stop thinking about the life so small and precious growing inside me. Oh Mulder, I miss you. I want so much to tell you that your child lives within me. I wonder if it will have your eyes and your sweet lopsided smile...or if our baby will inherit your genius. I wonder what color its hair will be...I can almost feel it now, so downy soft against my fingertips. Will it be red like mine or the beautiful chestnut you were blessed with? I swear Mulder; I can already feel our baby's warm weight against my breast. I miss you so much...and love you with all my heart and soul. ****** Placing the journal beside her on the bed, Scully throws the blankets to the side and climbs out. "This is pointless," she mumbles, knowing that sleep will never find her tonight. "Mulder...," she whispers. Suddenly she knows what to do, where she needs to be. She quickly finds a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt to change in to, grabs her car keys and heads out the door. Soon she's driving through the quiet nighttime streets of Washington, visions of Mulder's face still haunting her. She arrives at his apartment and slowly unlocks the door. Stepping inside, she immediately casts her eyes on the couch and begins to recall the sweet conversations held there so recently, bits and pieces of the past floating into her mind, unbidden... "A lot, a lot, a lot." "Unbuttered popcorn!" "So what was your third wish Mulder?" She stares blankly at the black leather, wondering how the hell this all happened. One beautiful brief moment ago they lay there together, Mulder's body buried inside hers, moving ever deeper until they both trembled and sighed with pleasure. Now...now she sits on his couch, more lonely than she ever thought she could be. "Mulder," she cries out loud as the racking sobs begin. "Mulder." The memories of that night assault her, dragging her mind down to a place of such passion and pain, she can barely breathe. How could she have known? The night had started out innocently enough. She and Mulder drinking tea, sharing ideas about her visions and her relationship with Daniel. She had even fallen asleep while Mulder was in mid-sentence. She had felt him cover her with the scratchy blanket and had wanted to open her eyes, but was too tired. Floating in that blissful state before sleep truly comes, she could sense him lingering over her, comforting her and even felt him lightly stroke her hair. Feeling strangely content and safe she soon tumbled into a deep slumber. Some hours later, she had awakened to find him sitting at his desk reading files. She quietly padded over to him, rubbing her eyes like a sleepy child. Hearing her soft footfalls, he turned around placing the files back on the desk. "Hey," he whispered. "Have a good sleep?" "Mmm hmmm," came her sleep-muffled reply. "Watchya doing?" Chuckling at the sweet picture she presented, her face flushed and eyes low, he had answered, "Nothing much, just wondering when Sleeping Beauty was gonna wake up." She chuckled back at him, then, spurred on by the sweet look on his face, leaned into him wrapping her arms lightly around his shoulders and resting her head atop his. "Sleeping Beauty usually requires a kiss to do that," she answered lightly. His hands stroked soothingly over her back while his face nestled against the warm skin of her neck. "Is that so?" he asked softly. Suddenly she realized the intimate position they were in...how'd that happen? Her mind raced. He had now pulled away just enough to look up at her, his handsome face awash in the soft light of his desk lamp, his eyes heavy with something she had never seen before. Scully's pulse quickened and her breath grew shallow as she tried to process her reply. "Yes, that's so," was all she could come up with. In response, he quickly stood and lifted her easily into his arms. He carried her over to the couch and lay her down, being ever so careful as he placed her across the length of the couch. Scully's heart pounded...what was he doing? He kneeled on the floor next to her and, looking into her eyes, leaned in so that his mouth was mere inches from hers. Then he whispered, "Awaken my beauty," and placed his lips gently upon hers. Through her tears, Scully remembered the sweetness of that first lover's kiss. The heady sensation of Mulder's mouth on hers, the sweet taste of him. She had been the first one to deepen the kiss, moaning wantonly as she pressed her tongue softly against his lips, begging entrance. His mouth opened to hers, and within moments, the kiss was beyond their ability to control. Through moans and sighs, they began undressing each other. As each article of clothing fell away, every inch of skin revealed beneath was kissed and cherished. Panting and flushed with need, they soon found themselves moments away from consummating 8 years of unspoken desire. "Scully," he had whispered so earnestly, "I love you," then pushed his body into hers with the strength and sleekness of a panther. "Ooooooh," was all Scully could utter as her hands clutched him more tightly to her, urging him to press deeper, harder. As they sweetly made love to each other, climbing the heights of their passion together, Scully whispered her love to him as well, and his eyes swelled with tears as he listened. Too soon, the waves were breaking over them, leaving them stunned and shaking with emotion. "God, Scully...I love you...love you so much," he murmured, setting her heart ablaze again with the need to show that love. He had carried her to his bed then and made love to her there fulfilling every fantasy she had ever entertained about him. He was more than just a wonderful lover, he was her love, her soul mate, and when they made love it was like music, captivating and perfect. The morning had come too soon and despite Mulder's protest, Scully had left his warm bed to get home to shower and change before work. She could still see the look that had adorned his face when, after gathering up her clothes, she had turned back toward him before stepping into the bathroom. "You're so beautiful," he had told her... and she had blushed. By the time she had dressed and walked out of the bathroom, he was blissfully asleep. As she stood and watched him, a moment of fear seized her heart. They had changed the path they were on forever...would they be OK? She had left that morning in silence, not knowing that she would soon give anything to have those precious moments back. They could have skipped work that day, stayed in bed and made love for hours. Hell, they could have skipped work that whole week. But how could she have known that the precious morning hours after they made love for the very first time might be some of the last truly intimate ones she would spend with him? True, they had made love again after the Genie case. Mulder had taught her the subtle nuances of the term "three wishes." But they would never have another first time, and she sorely regretted having left his side so early. But life doesn't work that way. There is no warning given of the horrors to come. We can only live moment to moment and pray that we are, indeed, making the right choices. Clutching the scratchy blanket to her, she could still detect the faint fragrance of his cologne, when the terrifying truth suddenly hit her. She would surely go insane if he did not return. There was no way she could live without him. It was too ironic and painful that he should be taken from her the very day that she had learned that she carried his child. The tears started anew. "Our child deserves more," she whispered out loud. "And I will try Mulder. I'll try, but I'm not sure I can make it." She ran her hands lightly over her belly where she knew their baby was growing. "Oh, Mulder!" She finally cried herself into a restless slumber. ****** "Scully!!!!" he screamed at the top of his lungs, bashing his body against the cell door that restrained him. "Sculleeeeee!" As Krycek watched Mulder's uncontrolled fury, he turned to Marita and said, "I knew this would happen, but I didn't think it would be this bad." "He appears...inconsolable," Marita offered. What they failed to realize, what they could not know, was that along with the ability to hear other people's thoughts again, Mulder had also come to the knowledge that Scully was pregnant with his child. With the help of the drug they had been administering to him, it had taken only a few hours to gain his ability to hear Scully clearly amidst the myriad of voices in his head. He was learning how to control this power, how to tone down what he didn't want to hear and to focus on what he did. At first, he had been relieved to be able to hear her, to feel her missing him. Within moments, however, the rest became clear. Somehow, by some miracle, she was carrying his child...their child. "Scully," he screamed again and then fell into the corner sobbing. Not far below his sorrow, though, was his determination to return to her and his child. He would not give up.
