Summary: Both Scully and Mulder thought Luke Jenkins was dead. But is he
   really dead?
********************************************************************(last
part of 9/9 of Red Rum)
one week later
6:37 a.m.

Scully entered the tiny basement office. Mulder was waiting for her. He
looked up from what he was writing.

Scully smiled. Today was the first time Mulder was back. Jenkins had
broken six of his ribs. Besides his ribs he had managed to give Mulder a
really nasty black eye, and numerous bruises on his body. All and all, it
was a lot better than Scully had thought.

"Hey Scully!" He said cheerfully, as he popped a sunflower seed into is
mouth.

"Hey yourself." She replied.

The knock on the door made her jump. She walked to the door and opened
it. A second later Skinner walked in.

He handed Scully a file. "I just thought you two should be aware of
this." He said, then slipped out the door.

"What was that about?" Scully asked.

"I guess we're gonna find out." Mulder said, as he stood and took the
folder from her hands.

As he opened it his face went pale. As he read further his face got
paler. He sat down hard in his chair. Scully looked at him and took the file from his grasp.

"The girl.........in my dream....." Mulder mumbled.

"What?" Scully asked, she was worried about how pale he was.

Mulder shook his head.

Scully took the folder from his grasp.

"A copy cat?" She asked.

"Read the note Skinner wrote."

Scully turned to the last page where Skinner had attached a little note. As she read her face almost matched Mulder's.

"Oh my god! Mulder, they're Jenkins' finger prints!"
******************(insert X-Files theme song here)**********************
Day 1
7:38 a.m.

"No." Skinner said to Mulder. "I'm not going to have you and Agent Scully
back in harms way."

"With respect sir, son't you think that if it is Jenkins, we are already
in harms way?" Mulder said coolly.

"Yes. But I'm not going to let you get even closer."

Mulder looked over at Scully who had been silent the whole conversation.
He then focussed his attention back on Skinner.

"We know him better than any other agent you will put on the case."
Mulder said.

"Agent Mulder yes it is true that you are the only ones that really know
Jenkins, but both of you -you especially- are in no physical condition
to be casing after people."

"Sir, at least let us help." Scully said half-heartedly. She felt the
same way about them not being ready to go casing after someone.

Skinner sighed, not willing to give in but knowing that the agents before
him were right. "Fine. I'm assigning you to *assist* agent William
Anderson."

Both agents nodded together.

After receiving instructions, they left the office.
*****
Day 2
11:34 a.m.

William Anderson frowned as he saw the two agents pull up in front of the
police e station where he had made a base of operations as one person
called it. Not that he minded the help, all was welcome, it was just
that he was already logged down with the work, and he didn't like the he
would have to baby-sit two agents. Another stabbing reason was that a
friend of his had once worked with 'Spooky'. He told him to brace
himself for weird theories and even weirder hunches that usually proved
right.

He was already convinced before either agent was in the door that the
case was going to take a turn for the worse.

Little did he know that he was almost totally
correct.....................

Summary: Both Scully and Mulder thought Luke Jenkins was dead. But is he
really dead?
**************************************************************************************************
Day 1
11:40 a.m.

Mulder held the door open for Scully as they entered the police station.
It was a small town with a small police station. They walked over to the
front desk and were about to ask for Agent Anderson when a young man came
out of an office.

He was the exact opposite of Mulder. As Mulder was tall and slender, he
was short and slightly puggy. Mulder hair and eyes were darker and could
tell emotion through his eyes, the man's hair and eyes were fare and his
eyes were cold and were void of any emotions.

Mulder and Scully simultaneously pulled out their IDs. "Good morning."
Scully said politely, "I'm FBI Agent Dana Scully and this is Agent Fox
Mulder. We're looking for Agent Anderson."

"I'm Agent Anderson." The man said a hint of annoyance in his voice.

Scully had started to say something, but as interrupted by a young female
police officer running up to Anderson. "There's been another murder." She
said simply.

Mulder sighed it was going to be a long day.
*****
Day 2
1:56 p.m.

The rain reflected Scully's mood perfectly. She silently cursed herself
and Mulder for forgetting an umbrella. She was drenched from head to toe
and then some. She had spent a half hour doing her hair that was now
matted down to her head. Mulder seemed to be taking his time surveying the scene.

The body of a 43 year old male was found, his throat cut, underneath a
bush. The words 'Red Rum' on the ground beside him.

"It's not Jenkins." Mulder said walking up to her equally drenched.

"What?" Scully asked almost surprised by his statement. \\Then again,//
she thought \\ I could be used to his odd statements by now.//

"I said it wasn't Luke Jenkins." Mulder repeated.

"What makes you think that?"

"If it was him, the man would have the body in plain sight. All the other
ones were in plain sight and found at most three hours after. This guy
was almost completely hidden. He was reported missing over twenty four hours ago."

"What about the first murder?"

"That wasn't him either. The woman's body was found hidden under a pile
of garbage behind a dinner. She was seen leaving the dinner, almost ten
hours before she was found buy garbage men."

"But the finger prints?"

Mulder shrugged. "I've been thinking about that. What if they were
planted to through us off?"

"Mulder how can you plant a dead man's finger prints!!?" Scully
practically screamed.

"What where his finger prints found on Scully?" Mulder asked.

"The knife, I think."

"And was that the first time a weapon was found?"

"Yes."

"And if you were trying to frame someone, what would you leave?"

"A weapon." She said a little frustrated that he was leading her around like you would to a little child when you knew, they knew, they did
something bad.

"The weapon was a knife. Right?" He waited for Scully to nod. "Couldn't
you get a kitchen knife from someone's home? And If you did, wouldn't
the knife have the person's finger prints on it?"

Scully smiled, as realization set in. Then she laughed. She looked up and
saw the confusion in Mulder's eyes. "For once Mulder I understand your theory and totally agree on it."

Mulder laughed. "You're allowed to once in a while."

Anderson took that moment to bound over to them. "I don't know if you two
enjoy laughing at a crime scene but-"

"Tell your men to stop looking for Jenkins." Mulder interrupted him.

"What? Why?" The stunned agent asked.

"Because it's not him."

"His finger prints were found at the last crime scene."

"I know. They were only on the knife. someone could have easily broken
into his home and took a knife from his kitchen. If someone did,
wouldn't you find Jenkins finger prints on it?"

"Mulder, you know that's just speculation." Came the curt reply.

"Yes but all the murders here, don't fit Jenkin's form."

"If I understood correctly, there was no form to the his murders in
Maine."

"Yes, but two things were consistent that could have considered
coincidences." Mulder explained. "One, all the bodies were in plain
sight, where they were found only hours later. These bodies were
hidden."

"The second?" Anderson asked half-heartedly.

''No murder weapon was found at any of the murders. The last one was to
trough you off. The murder wants us to think, that it's Jenkins."

"All this you got from a few dead bodies?" Anderson said, understanding
how Mulder got the nickname 'Spooky'.

"That and the fact that I watched Jenkins die." Mulder said, turned and
starting walking towards the car, leaving an open mouthed, Anderson
behind.

Something was itching at Mulder. If the killer wanted them to think that
it was Jenkins, had the killer known that he and Scully would come? Or
did he want them to come?

Summary: Both Scully and Mulder thought Luke Jenkins was dead. But is he
really dead?
**************************************************************************************************
Day 1
10:36 p.m .

Richard Jenkins stood watching as the three FBI agents exited the small
dinner. His attention fixed on the redheaded woman, and her tall
partner. They were responsible for his twin brother's death and they
would pay.

He had killed those people knowing that the two agents would come. When
he saw them enter the police station he had to fight himself not to
shoot them then. He wanted to wait awhile. He wanted to scare them
first. Then through a friend (who had helped him get both agents files)
he had found out that Mulder had figured out that it wasn't Luke.

Slowly he raised the gun.
******
Day 1
10:37 p.m.

Mulder heard the shots as he saw Scully fall forward. He feel to his
knees next to her. She looked up at him dazed. A red shot was forming
close to where her heart was, but Mulder was sure the bullet had missed
her heart.

Mulder looked in the way he thought the shots were fired. He saw him,
standing there, gun in hand. Their eyes locked. The man turned and ran
slowly, almost daring Mulder to follow. Mulder accepted the challenge.

"Stay with her and call an ambulance." Mulder told Anderson. Then he
turned to Scully.

"Be careful." Scully said. But more than words passed. In a way she told
him that he was her partner and that if he didn't come back she would
be lost. All those words in one word.

With a quick nod Mulder was up and gone. Running fast into the woods that
outlined the street that had the dinner, in search of the shooter.

As soon as he enter the woods he could barely make out the figure
running away from him. He lifted his gun to fire. He didn't see the tree
stump and fell, his shot going upwards. His right side was struck against
a tree log. He pulled himself up ignoring the stabbing pain that was now
traveling up and down his rib cage.

When he looked up he couldn't see the shooter anymore. He ran blindly on,
towards the direct he had seen the man last.

He never saw the man hiding behind the tree. If he did, he would have
been ready for the attack............

Day 1
10:46 p.m.

Scully looked helplessly at Anderson. Mulder was in trouble and she knew it. \\Oh god. He's gonna kill him!//

"William, you have to go help Mulder! He's gonna kill him! Go!" Scully screamed.

"What? Calm down Scully. He told me not to leave you."

"Goooooooo! Please. I'll be fine. Don't worry. Please!" Scully pleaded.

"Agent Scully, how do you know he's going to kill Mulder?" Anderson
asked.

"I........I don't know......I just know. Please go."

Anderson sighed. "I'm going to wait for the ambulance first then I'll
go."

"No. Go now! If you don't I will." As she said that she tried to sit up,
but Anderson restrained her. For a few minutes she struggled against
him, then finally gave into him. \\Please god don't let him die. Not
now. After all this.//
*****
Day 1
10:42 p.m.

Mulder looked over just to see Richard Jenkins dive for him. Mulder
swiveled realizing he had left his gun on the ground where he had
fallen. The two men fell to the ground. Mulder than remembered, the man
had a gun. The odds were definitely not in his favor.

Mulder fought back as his attacker began to fight him. After a few
seconds they ended up with the man sitting on Mulder's stomach, his
knees bent and holding Mulder's elbows against the ground. Richard
Jenkins bent to pick up the gun that had been dropped during the
struggle.

"I'm gonna kill you like you killed my brother, Luke. And like you did to
you're sister." Jenkins said. Smiling as Mulder's face paled.

"I didn't kill her." Mulder replied weakly, fought for the air he wasn't
getting because of Jenkins' position on his stomach.

"Yes you did. I know you did. To cover your tracks you made up this story
about her being 'abducted'. The story was the only way to get out of it."

Mulder shook his head. "I didn't kill her. Why would I? I loved her."

"You killed her because you were jealous. Everyone paid attention to her
and not you. You felt a need to compete. When you did you would lose."

"I was never jealous of her!"

"Yes you were Fox. don't lie."

"I'm not lying you fucking prick!"

Jenkins struck Mulder across the face with the gun. The sounds of the
ambulance made the Jenkins look towards the street. Mulder took his
chance to kick up, as if he had just been electrocuted. The Jenkins went
flying over Mulder's head.

Mulder bent to retrieve the gun, as he did, Jenkins was back up, and
leapt for him. Again the two men fell to the ground. They fought for
what seemed hours to both, but was only seconds. Soon voices could be
heard rushing towards them. Jenkins thought and then remembered where
to strike. He punched Mulder right in his lower right side. Mulder's
eyes widened in pain. For a split second he wondered if you could
re-break already broken ribs. Jenkins struck his side again in the same
spot. Jenkins took his opportunity to hit Mulder square in the jaw.

Jenkins looked towards the area where the voices could be heard coming
from. They were too close. He got up to leave.

"I'll worry about you later." He said and turned and ran.

Mentally Mulder wanted to run after him but psychically all he wanted to
do was lie there on the ground. Then he remembered Scully. Instantly he
was on hid feet. A little faster than he should have he realized dimly
as everything started to spin.

Then everything went black...................

***************************************************************************************
Day 1
10:51 p.m.

Anderson felt his heart skip a beat when he saw the
figure jump up. It began to sway and the fell back
to the ground. Then Anderson realized he recognized
the figure's shape. He rushed forward, a stopped right
in front of Mulder.

He bent down and shook him lightly. "Mulder?"

Mulder's eyes fluttered open. "Is Scully okay?" The words
instantly tumbling from his mouth.

Anderson frowned. "She passed out right before the
ambulance came. She should be fine though."

Mulder's eyes shut again. For a second Anderson worried
that he had passed out again. "You know Anderson," Mulder
said, his voice soft, "She never really wanted us to take
this case. She didn't think we were ready to take another case.
But she agreed to take it because of me." As Mulder spoke he
remembered telling her once 'It's just a little trip into the
woods.' She almost died because of him.

Anderson was at a loss for words. How should he respond? It was
in no way Mulder's fault that Scully had been shot. But somehow
he sensed telling Mulder this wouldn't have changed his thoughts.

The gun shot broke the silence as it pierced through the still night.
Mulder's eyes snapped open, just in time to see a police officer
fall down, shot by the bullet. Mulder swallowed realizing that, the
bullet was meant for him. Before he, Anderson, or any of the police
officers
knew it he was up and running towards where the shots had been fired.

Anderson was after him. Soon some of the other officers followed.
Anderson called out to Mulder telling him to stop, knowing that Mulder
wouldn't.

Anderson tried not to imagine how much pain Mulder was in,
knowing that Mulder was probably numbed by anger. Angry at
the man who had shot his partner and best friend, and the man who
shot an innocent police officer.

Mulder, even with injures was running faster than Anderson was. The
main reason for that was their physical abilities. Even now, Anderson
was running at a pace that was his maximum speed, but to Mulder was
just a jog. So it was not surprise to Mulder when he turned around and
didn't
see Anderson behind him.

Mulder looked back towards where he last saw Jenkins running. He cursed
himself for leaving his weapon where he had tripped. The dark shadow
that he had been chasing halted suddenly, and opened fire on Mulder,
sending
Mulder scrambling behind a fallen tree log.

Mulder really began to curse himself. Now he was weaponless against
Jenkins.
Before at least when Jenkins first attacked him, he knew that Jenkins
didn't know
he didn't have a gun. Now the odds were sliding more in Jenkins favor.

The gun fire stopped when Jenkins realized he couldn't hit Mulder. Mulder
could
hear his steps advancing towards him. Mulder's body tensed waiting for
the
chance to spring out at Jenkins............
******************************************************************************************************	Day 1
11:03 p.m.

Scully's eyes opened suddenly. "MULDER!!!!!!" She screamed, scarring both

the EMTs that where in the ambulance with her.

The dream was so real. Mulder was chasing after a shadow, she knew
the shadow was the one who shot her. Then without warning the shadow
turned
and fired his gun, sending Mulder desperately looking for cover. He found

some behind a fallen tree log. The man with the gun approached
the log. Mulder jumped out, and the the man fired. Then she woke up.

A small voice inside her head reminded her that you don't dream after
you pass out. She ignored the voice. She just wanted to believe it was a
dream. She didn't want to think about what it was if it wasn't a
dream....

Summary: Both Scully and Mulder thought Luke
Jenkins was dead. But is he really dead?
***************************************************************************************
Day 1
11:04 P.M.

Mulder jumped up, knocking Jenkins backwards. They
both fell down. Jenkins dropped the gun. Mulder almost
laughed about how many times he had done the same
thing and gotten the crap beaten out of him.

Mulder wondered where Anderson was.He knew that he
was behind him only about a hundred feet. He should
have been at least in sight. Mulder hoped that when
Jenkins had fired his gun he hadn't hit anyone.

Jenkins brought his right knee up against Mulder's right
side. He rolled to the right, smashing Mulder's ribs against
his knee. Jenkins smiled at the small grown of pain escaped
Mulder's mouth. Jenkins rolled back on top of Mulder and
wrapped both hands around Mulder's neck.

"You know Agent Mulder if you weren't so smart you and
Scully would be fine right now. But no. You had to figure
out too quickly. Honestly, I wasn't aiming for Agent Scully.
I was aiming for you. I knew that she would never leave
your side and desert you, the way you did to her."

Mulder strained to talk, but couldn't without the air he
was being denied. His hands slid around the muddy ground
hoping to find anything to help him. His hand landed on the cool
metal of the gun. His and tightened around the trigger. Then slid
down to the barrel. He swung his hand and arm in an upwards
motion, striking Jenkins across the forehead.

Jenkins instantly fell backwards. Mulder hit him once more
before he hit the ground. Mulder fought the urge to shoot
Jenkins. Shoot him for shooting Scully, the police officer, and
the two people he had killed to get his attention. For what
seemed like hours he held the gun pointed at the unconscious
Jenkins. Finally he decided he'd rather see him rot in a jail sell.

"Anderson!" Mulder called. Remembering him.

Shortly after a very out of breath William Anderson showed up.
"Juess, are you alright, Mulder?"

Mulder nodded and coughed a little.

Anderson smiled. "You look like hell."

"Thanks." Mulder said with mock hurt in his voice.

Mulder stood watching, as two police officers carried the still
unconscious Jenkins. He stood still, leaning against a tree for
support. Did he really mean to shoot him and not Scully? Was
the statement just to lie to upset him?

"What hospital did she go to?" Mulder asked Anderson.

"I'll drive you."

"Fine. Let's go now then."

"Uhm, Mulder, maybe you should clean up first."

Mulder looked down at himself. "Sorry. I tend to forget about
myself when I'm worried about her." He said quietly.

Anderson knew that was an understatement. He guessed that Mulder
forgot about more than himself. It was then that he realized that his
opinion towards Mulder was changing. At first he thought Mulder was
some freak. Now he realized than he was a bright and caring person,
that was unfortunately ridiculed for being 'spooky.'

Summary: Both Scully and Mulder thought Luke

*******(This section told in first person by Agent William
Anderson.)*******
Day 2
1:07 a.m.

I look briefly at Mulder then turn back to
the road. We're now driving to the hospital.
Even cleaned up Mulder looks like hell. He
and the other man, really had a nasty fight.
There are numerous bruises on his face, and
I can tell, just by the way he holds himself,
that his side is hurting him.

I still haven't found out what happened when
I was back with Scully. I felt so bad for letting
him go off into those woods alone. When he
turned to leave I prayed I was making the
right choice. Then when I heard the gunshot,
I almost left her, but something inside me
told me not to leave Scully.

As soon as the ambulance came and the EMTs
took over I had assembled a small team of
officers to come with me into the woods. When
I saw the figure jump up, I almost fired my gun.
Then the figure swayed and fell. Then I realized
it was him. The first words from his lips were of
Scully. He wanted to know if she was alright.

Then a gun was fired, injuring that poor officer.
Before I could stop him, he was on his feet,
running fast through the darkness. As desperately
as I tried, I nor any of the officers could keep up with
him or keep track of where he ran to. Then we heard
the gun fire. We all froze waiting, and praying that he
was alright. After what seemed like hours we heard a
very horse voice calling for me.

I bolted into a run. Then I saw Mulder, pointing a
gun at the still form. I saw him ripped in two,
deciding what to do. I know that if I was him, I'd
be just as torn.

The shrill ring of my cellular phone wakes me from
my wandering thoughts. "Anderson." I bark into the
phone.

"Agent Anderson? This is Officer Harrison. The squad
car caring the murder suspect was in a crash. The
suspect wasn't in the car. Neither was Officer Logan."

"You're joking right?" I ask not believing my ears.

"No sir."

"Where was the accident?" I ask, noticing I had Mulder's
attention, now.

"On, the intersection at Old Country Road and Main Street."

"And they walked away?"

"Yes."

"Shit! Call me if you find them." I disconnect the phone and
look over to Mulder.

"What's the matter, Anderson." He asks.

"Mulder, they were taking him in and,....well, the squad car
he was in ummm, crashed. By time anyone got there he
was gone."

"Oh, shit." Mulder says placing his head in his hands. Then
he looks back up at me, his face full of worry. "We've got to
get to the hospital quick. He's gonna go after Scully."

I immediately speed up the car. "How do you know?"

"He's gonna use her to get at me. He was mad I knew it wasn't
his brother, so when we exited the dinner, he was trying to hit
me. I caused Scully all that pain." He said then shook his head
as if warding of the feeling of guilt that had engulfed him. "Now
he knows how important Scully is to me."

I look at Mulder, finally seeing on a whole, there relationship.
It wasn't a romantic one it was a more important one. One of
trust, of a loving friendship.

I found myself wishing that I had someone like that in my life.

As we pulled up to the hospital, I took one glance at Mulder. His
face was a mix of emotion, fear, worry, and hope.

\\Please.// I prayed \\Let this go right.//

Day 2
2:57 a.m.

Richard Jenkins slipped into the room. This was going to
be easy. Just stick the poison into her IV and leave. Minutes
later, she would be dead.

The coldness of the metal pressed against his head, at first
shocked him then angered him. He went to strike out and
the gun was smacked against his head. Jenkins fell to the
floor like a rag doll.

Mulder was overwhelmed with relief. The door opened and
in came Anderson, pushing Scully into the room.

"Hey." Mulder said to Scully smiling a warn smile.

"Hey yourself." Scully replied.

A few minutes later Jenkins was taken by three officers.

Two days later
11:21 a.m.

Mulder looked at the last paragraphs he had written.

'One of a person's greatest fears is dying. The not
knowing of what comes after death, is second to only one
fear. The fear of what ever you have done in your life
will not go on.

Richard and Luke Jenkins were frightening reminders that,
no matter what you do in life, someone will want to carry it
out. No matter the costs to anyone.'

Sighing he shut off the computer. He had to go see Scully, she
was now in a hospital in Washington.

Grabbing his coat he walked out the door, shutting it, enclosing
the office in darkness.
