Now, on with the show. Dana Scully's Apartment 8:25 P.M. Nightfall had bestowed the nation's capital, a light sprinkling of snow beginning to cover the land. Dana Scully stood by the window, dressed casually in jeans and an old University of Maryland sweatshirt., watching the snowflakes gently blanket the ground. She looked at her watch. 8:25. He was late. 'Why does that surprise you?' she thought to herself. Her partner, Fox Mulder, had promised pizza and a movie to make up for the pointless case they had pursued a couple of days ago, sending them out on a freezing cold night up north in Connecticut. Mulder's lateness was a no brainer. He was not always the punctual person. At work today, he said he would drop by at 8:00 sharp, but now he was almost half an hour late. 'How typical,' Scully thought as she made her way over to the fireplace to add another log to fuel the fire. Scully strode over to her couch to watch the latest weather reports flash across the TV screen. More snowfall was expected tonight due to the cold front pushing its way through the northeast. Good thing that today was Friday, and she would not have to go to work tomorrow. Grabbing the remote, Scully aimlessly flipped through the channels, her mind drifting to think of her work and her partner at the FBI. Never in a million years did she think she would have imagined herself working on the X-Files when she was growing up. In fact, the concept of joining the FBI never crossed her thoughts until that fateful day when a recruiter came to speak to her class in med. school. How that day had altered her entire future was incredible. She was quite thankful for it as well. Otherwise, she would have never had the opportunity to meet and work with Fox Mulder, the only person she entrusted completely... Her best friend. As if on cue, there was a knock on the door. Scully smiled and hopped up off the couch. "I'm not letting you in unless you have food and a really good movie," she said through the door. "Then you'd better let me in fast before this pizza gets cold," came Mulder's reply. Scully opened the door to allow her partner into her home, suppressing another grin. Fox Mulder stepped into the apartment and placed the pizza box and video cassette on top of the coffee table, then shook the snowflakes out of his hair. "The snow is really starting to come down." Making himself at home, he took off his leather jacket and hung it on the coat rack by the door. Afterwards, he planted himself next to the fireplace, relishing in the warmth. Picking up the video cassette, Scully frowned. "Planet of the Apes again, Mulder?" Mulder shrugged. "It's a classic, Scully!" He took the tape from her and popped it into the VCR. "Besides, I didn't think you'd want to watch any of my usual type of entertainment." Scully rolled her eyes and walked to the kitchen, returning with a bottle of wine and two wine glasses. After getting the bottle open and pouring some for Mulder and herself, she settled on the couch, grabbing a slice of pizza. Mulder sat next to her and took a sip of his wine, smiling at the opportunity to be with Scully as a friend tonight. He cherished all of these precious moments with her, but the pain in his heart would not go away until he found a cure for Scully's cancer. As he surreptitiously glanced at her, he silently promised to give her more happy memories to treasure. Scully caught him glancing at her and frowned slightly, the look on her face that of concern. Mulder simply shook his head and gently placed his arm around her shoulders, bringing her closer to him. She did not protest, but welcomed his warmth and leaned into him, content spending the evening watching a movie and eating pizza with her best friend. A couple of hours later the credits were rolling, and Mulder stood up to throw away the pizza box in the trash. He peered out the window. "Snow is really coming down out there. I'd better get going." Scully joined him at the window, surprised at how much snow had fallen in the past couple of hours and how it kept on coming. "Mulder, I can't let you drive out in that weather. It's too dangerous." Keeping his eyes out the window, Mulder replied, "We've been in more dangerous situations before." Scully gave him the Look, and Mulder raised his hands in defeat. "Okay, okay, you win." "You have always said that I possess some sort of psychic ability. I guess that is why I won. I knew you didn't really want to go anyway," Scully said. Mulder grinned. "No wonder they call you Mrs. Spooky." At that, Scully gasped and attempted to push him for the comment. He grabbed her hands before she could, however, and began tickling her along her ribcage. Scully tried to pull away, shouting, "Mulder, stop! I'm not ticklish!" Mulder could not be fooled. He could see how hard Scully was trying to contain her laughter. Her face was turning beet red from the effort. His smile grew wider and he continued his onslaught, dragging her over to the living room. All the while, Scully fought to free herself of Mulder's grip, stifling her giggles. They landed in a heap on the couch, Mulder pinning Scully down, mercilessly tickling her. At last, Scully broke. She could no longer contain her laughter and just let loose. Mulder smiled triumphantly down at Scully. Her laughter was like the sound of wind chimes on a cool autumn day with a gentle breeze blowing. 'Her laughter is beautiful. Hell, SHE is beautiful,' Mulder thought. He relented his tickling and left Scully gasping for air, a smile playing across her lips. Gently, he placed his palm on the side of her face, caressing her cheek with his thumb softly. She looked up at him, meeting his gaze, her eyes bright from the laughter. Mulder looked down at Scully, his eyes trying to convey a thousand things he could not find himself to express vocally. Scully blinked up at him, seeing the depth of emotion in those hazel orbs bearing down upon her. No words were needed. She gave him a shy smile and carefully placed her hand on the back of his neck. The universal invariant of time seemed to slow for them as Mulder's lips descended down upon Scully's. Perhaps more incredible things had taken place before in the course of the universe, but on that night, in that one moment, nothing mattered or ever would matter to them more than each other. After a few moments, Mulder reluctantly ended the kiss, his heart feeling free and full of joy. He gazed into Scully's eyes, and she smiled and tenderly kissed his cheek. Reaching over to the coffee table, Mulder found the remote for her stereo and soft, romantic music filled the room. Mulder wrapped his arms around Scully protectively and kissed her temple. They lay on the couch listening to the sweet music, enjoying each other's company. Soon enough, Mulder fell asleep, his breathing even and his hold on Scully light. For some reason, Scully herself could not fall into a peaceful slumber. She listened to the radio, hoping it would lull her into dreamland. A new song was beginning. She recognized it as a song titled "Remember Me" that was on the Armageddon soundtrack. Find myself all alone, in darkness without you. Now I can't turn away, from what I must do. You know I'd give my life for you, More than words can say. I've shown you how to love someone. I know you'll find the way. Say goodbye, close your eyes, remember me. Walk away, the sun remains, remember me. I'll live on somewhere in your heart, you must believe. Remember me... Scully smiled sadly at the lyrics which struck close to home in regards to her thoughts about her cancer and Mulder. Without him, she knew she would be lost... Alone in the dark. Somewhere in their four-year partnership, she had fallen in love with him, and cared for him more deeply than any other person in the world. She would gladly lay down her life for him in a heartbeat, with no regrets, no second thoughts. Tonight they had confirmed their unspoken love for one another, crossing over the line. Scully knew she did not want to turn back. After her diagnosis with terminal cancer, she vowed she would live each day to its fullest, and now she wanted to be with Mulder more than ever. Not just as a partner at work anymore, but a partner in life. No way I could change my mind, I don't have the answers. If you could see through my eyes, You'd let go of your fears. And though I have to leave you now, We're a part of each other. I'll miss you touch, your call of my name, I am with you forever. Say goodbye, close your eyes, remember me. Walk away, the sun remains, remember me. With a change we can't explain, remember me. I'll live on somewhere in your heart, you must believe. Remember me... She sighed softly, fear creeping into her heart. Scully knew her cancer was getting worse. The nosebleeds had been more frequent and she had lost much of her energy. None of this information had made its way to Mulder yet. Scully simply did not know how to tell him. She did not want him to know that it was only a matter of months before the inevitable would occur. Leaning in a little closer to him, she wondered how he would take the news. 'Pretty badly,' a little voice in her head told her. He'd be devastated. Scully wished she could make him understand that even if she could not be there physically for him, she'd always be watching over him. They were a part of each other, two pieces that combined made a whole. She would be with him forever, living on in his heart and his memories of her. You know I'd give my life for you, More than words can say. I've shown you how to love someone. I know you'll find the way. Say goodbye, close your eyes, remember me. Walk away, the sun remains, remember me. Be there to watch over you, remember me. Feel I'm gone, my heart lives on, remember me. Don't you think of this as the end, I'll come in through your dreams. Remember me... Scully knew how hard Mulder found it to love someone after losing his sister, Samantha. That single event crushed his heart and weighed down his shoulders with tremendous guilt. Somewhere deep in her heart, Scully was certain that she had taught Mulder how to love once again. In finding one another, they had saved each other. As the song ended, Scully carefully slipped out of Mulder's arms and went to retrieve a blanket for him. She wrapped it around him lovingly and kissed his forehead. "This isn't the end, Mulder," she whispered. "We'll always be together." With that, she made her way to her bedroom to try to get some sleep. ~~ Later that night ~~ It seemed to Scully that she had only been asleep for a couple of minutes when her coughing woke her up. She squeezed her eyes shut and scrambled to the bathroom, thinking, 'God, not again.' As she flipped on the light switch, an all-too familiar sight greeted her. Blood was streaming in rivulets from her nose, staining her sweatshirt and making her skin sticky wherever it ran. With shaky hands, she grabbed a washcloth, wet it, and held it beneath her nose. She sighed deeply, trying to get herself back in control, but after a couple of minutes, she realized the blood had not stopped. Scully tossed the ruined washcloth into the sink and grabbed another, her hands now covered in blood. 'God, please make it stop, please,' she thought. "Scully?" A sleepy, concerned voice came from the doorway of her bedroom. Upon seeing the light in the bathroom on, Mulder quietly walked towards the room only to be shocked at the sight. "Scully, are you ok?" "I'm fine," she replied, her standard answer. Mulder looked at all the blood and retrieved another washcloth, offering it to her with a frown. "Scully... You're not fine. Here, let me help you, you're losing too much blood." She pushed his hand away. "I can take care of myself." Scully instantly regretted her actions as Mulder backed away, hurt. He mumbled that he was sorry and something along the lines of "only trying to help." "I'm sorry, Mulder," she said softly, hoping that he would understand. He nodded and once again offered the third washcloth. She removed to second to discover it had staunched the blood flow. Now all that remained was her messy face and bloody sweatshirt. Scully looked up at Mulder, trying to smile and make it all okay. "There goes another sweatshirt," she said, a hint of sarcasm in her voice. "I'll get you some PJs," Mulder said, and headed back into her bedroom while Scully washed her face, neck, and hands. Moments later, Mulder returned and placed her nightwear on the toilet for her to change, closing the bathroom door on his way out to allow her the privacy. A few minutes later, Scully emerged to find Mulder sitting at the edge of her bed. "Feeling a little better?" Scully nodded and sat next to him. "That one... That one was bad, wasn't it?" "Yeah, Mulder..." she responded. She reached out and took his hand, squeezing it gently. Now or never. "The cancer... It's not getting better." Mulder looked up at her, tears shimmering in his eyes. "Why didn't you tell me sooner?" "Because I didn't know how to tell you. I don't want to believe it." With that statement, Mulder embraced her. Scully held on to him tight. It seemed like Mulder's arms were a safety net for her. He would never let her fall. "Mulder?" He pulled away to look at her. "Can you please stay here with me tonight?" Mulder silently nodded, knowing she needed the comfort, and was secretly glad she was willingly tearing down some walls tonight. Together they slipped beneath the covers, holding on to one another. Scully felt at ease with him so near. She closed her eyes to sleep, her last thoughts being a promise to fight the cancer with all her might. Nothing had held her down yet, and she'd be damned to let this disease destroy her life and Mulder's now that they had taken their relationship to the next level. She felt Mulder kiss her forehead and smiled. Mr. and Mrs. Spooky indeed... and maybe even Mr. and Mrs. Fox Mulder someday... ~~ End of Story ~~ "Remember Me" by: Journey (featuring lead vocals by Steve Augeri) Find myself all alone, in darkness without you.
