Title: Resist or Die (Part Four: The Lantern) Author: Cinnamon Scully One month later. . . Samantha sat at home, watching television. She was waiting impatiently for Mulder and Scully to come over for dinner. They made it a habit for at least twice a week to eat at her place, and the rest of the week at theirs. Now that she could watch television, it bored her rather quickly. She did enjoy Friends, but only because she remembered watching it with John. She sighed as the knock came to the door. Scully came in, hugging her. "How you holding up today, Sam?" "I just wish things would get easier. What did you bring?" Samantha asked. "I made a couple of pies for dessert. Mulder protested, but I finagled him into letting me bake them. The catch, he didn't do anything." "Fox, you should help out more often!" Samantha said. "I brought friends instead, sis." Mulder said, smiling. Krycek and the Gunmen stood behind Mulder. "Hey Pretty Lady!" Frohike said from behind Mulder. "Frohike, when are you going to learn?" Samantha said, laughing. "I don't know." The group moved through the door, with Samantha closing it behind them all. She said, "I made some lasagna. I didn't know who was all coming, so I made a big meal, the biggest meal I could find." "It's not a problem, Sam." Mulder said, smiling. Samantha asked, "Dana, would you mind helping me in the kitchen?" "Not at all." Scully walked with Samantha to the kitchen. "Mulder, keep an eye on Little John. Don't let Frohike corrupt our boy." Little John had grown a lot since Doggett's abduction. He was crawling now, and everything in arms reach went straight into his mouth. He was now sitting on Mulder's lap. Samantha asked Scully in the kitchen, "Do you think they've killed John?" "Oh Samantha, don't give up hope. He'll come home to you. You have to believe that. I know it's so very very difficult." Scully hugged her for a moment. "It's been so long. I don't know how long I've been gone when I'm up there. I've never been on this end of an abduction. It's been such an awful long time." Samantha said. She removed the lasagna from the oven. Scully watched her walk into the dining room, pouring glasses of milk for everyone. She sighed. This past month had been very very difficult for everyone. The Lone Gunmen were having an argument, "Listen, I get to sit here. You sit there. Why do we go through with this every week?" Frohike said to Langly. "Maybe because it's reversed, dummy." Langly retorted back. Krycek sat next to Mulder watching the fight. He felt uncomfortable still about being accepted as a member. He rolled his eyes as the fight progressed. He would never figure out how they did anything. Mulder said, "Boys, boys, just sit down. Who cares where, just sit." They did as told, but not without grumbling. "I don't see why he always gets to sit next to Samantha." Frohike complained. "You never learn, do you?" Mulder sighed. Scully sat on the other side of Samantha, in between her and Mulder. She said, "Frohike, who cares. It doesn't really matter where any of us sit. Now just be quiet." Frohike sputtered for a moment. He began to eat in silence. Samantha hoped that things would be okay. She feared for her baby and for John. Samantha was doing dishes with Scully in the kitchen. She sighed. "Dana, do you think that those three will ever grow up?" "No. Those three grow up, and the world ends." Scully said with a laugh. "I suppose you are right. I noticed that Alex wasn't very comfortable tonight." Samantha said offhandedly. "I don't think he's quite sure what he supposed to be doing here yet. He's still trying to transit to the new life, I suppose. It's not that new I guess, but for him I suppose it might be." Scully said, drying a dish. Samantha nodded. "It's good to see that he meets with us. I was surprised to see him tonight." "Yeah. He almost didn't come." Scully said. "I'd guess that." Samantha said. "He looks lost out there." "I think he doesn't know what to say. He's been against us for so long, and probably still expects Mulder to kill him any second." "I bet he does. I would too." She put a cup in the cupboard. "This kitchen makes me miss John so much more." Samantha said, looking forlornly towards Scully. "Stupid aliens. Just can't leave us Earthlings alone." Scully cracked a smile at the joke. She stopped when Samantha cried out in pain. "Samantha, are you okay?" "The baby! Something is wrong. Oh God." Scully ran out into the living room. "Mulder, get your sister to the hospital! Something is wrong with her baby." Mulder ran into the kitchen to see his sister sitting on the floor, crying. She held her belly. He ran to her, helping her up. "Frohike! Help me get her to the car!" Frohike ran into the kitchen to help. He said, "Krycek, drive us there. We should sit with her to make sure that she is okay." Krycek jumped up, opening the door. He looked at Scully with guilt ridden eyes. He then disappeared out the door to the car to drive to the hospital. They all hoped that things would be okay. Mulder watched the doctors wheel his sister away. He was afraid that something had gone very very wrong. He stood off by himself, staring into the distance. Scully sat with Little John. She was trying to calm the child down, but to no avail. He would not sit still. She sighed. He was being finicky again about everything. He kept moving his arms up and down, exasperating his mother. "Mulder, I'm sure she'll be okay. She just stressed herself out. She shouldn't be doing so much anyway. If anything else, she needs John back." Scully said, trying to reassure Mulder, and keep Little John from falling on his head. Krycek stood on the opposite end of the waiting room from Mulder. He felt so very out of place. Though he had been accepted into the group, he had moved out of Samantha and Doggett's place within the week. He felt like he was endangering them by being there. The Gunmen watched Mulder start to pace back and forth. They worried just as much as he had, and though they were crabby they did not argue about anything. Mulder sighed. He turned to Scully. "Scully, what if it comes out that she can't have this baby? She can't take much more pain." "I know, I know. She'll be fine. We just have to believe that. I know that things are so difficult for all of us. If we could only get John back, things wouldn't be so difficult." Scully said, holding Little John closer. She knew what it was like to be threatened with losing a baby. Mulder said, "I don't know what would happen to her if they say she's going to lose the baby. It would devastate her." As he spoke, a gurney ran past them. A whole team of doctors and nurses were running past with a man. Mulder froze. He asked, "Who is that man?" "A John Doe, sir. Let us through." The doctors moved through. Mulder looked down. He saw who it was. "Um, Scully, you were saying about how things would be easier if Doggett was back?" Mulder indicated the gurney that had just ran past with a tilt of his head. Scully said, "No, they didn't hurt him that badly, did they?" "I'll follow it to see if it's him." Krycek offered. "You better take one of the boys here with you." Frohike stood up, "Let's go. I need to stretch my legs any ways." Frohike and Krycek went to follow the gurney. They wanted to check and see if it was Doggett. Frohike was trailing behind Krycek. He shouted, "Hey, let me keep up!" Krycek looked back, a devious smile on his face. "Sorry. I can't help going that fast." They stopped where the gurney had, looking through the window to see the man inside. Frohike asked, "Is it him?" "I'm afraid so. He doesn't look very good." Krycek sighed. "I'll go and tell them." Frohike said. Krycek watched the doctors. They were giving him life support, and blood. He saw the bruises on Doggett from where he was. The tests were horrible to him, he noticed. Mulder came up behind him. "How is he?" "Take a look for yourself." Krycek said, backing up. Mulder looked through. "Those damn aliens. They have to screw everyone over, don't they?" He turned around. "I got to tell Sam that he's back. Do you think you could see if he's going to be okay. I'll be down in a moment. The baby needs to be checked out, but they have stabilized Sam's pain." Mulder said. "Alright." Mulder left to tell Samantha. She lay in her bed, looking very tired. He walked up to her bedside. "Sam, they found him. He's in a hospital room down the hall. They are working on him right now." Samantha began to cry. "How bad is he?" "I was just going to find out. Oh Sam, he'll be okay. Things will be fine." Mulder said, giving her a quick kiss on the forehead. Mulder went back down the hall. He asked, "Are they almost done working on him?" "Yeah. You should be able to identify him to them any moment." Krycek said. "Alright." Mulder sighed. "Sam is going to be fine. Now we have to worry about both of them." A doctor came out to see Mulder and Krycek standing in the hall. Mulder drew his badge. "I have the identity of the man in that room." "OK. Who is he, sir?" The doctor asked. "He is an F.B.I. Agent named John Doggett." Mulder said. "Who are his contacts?" "I am, my fiancee, and his fiancee, who is already admitted to the hospital for complications in her pregnancy." Mulder replied. "Ok. We're going to be moving him to a room very soon. He should be fine, but we want to run as many tests on him that we can to make sure he is going to be fine." Mulder asked, "Do you know how bad the damage is?" "It's fairly serious, but he should wake in the next few days. Other than that, it might be hard to tell. He hasn't been fed in awhile. He did have water though, so he's not too dehydrated, but we will be hydrating him anyway." The doctor said. "If you'll excuse me, sir." Mulder watched the doctor leave. He said, "Krycek, will you call Skinner. If I can't stay here with him, will you and Skin Man? I want to tell Sam about his condition." "I will, Mulder. You just go." Mulder nodded his thanks. He walked down the hall to overhear his sister and Scully talking. "Dana, he might not be an AHH. He might be ill. I want to see him. I'll know the minute I see him which one he is. If he's sick, I don't know what I'll do." Samantha cried. Scully held her. "Samantha, he might be hurt, and if he is sick we'll deal with it. We'll do something for him." "If he is like Steve we'll never be able to help him." Sam sobbed. "I can't lose him. I almost lost the baby. I can't lose him, I just can't!" "I know, I know. He's strong. No matter what the two of you together are strong enough to handle anything thrown at you. Believe me, he'll pull through." Scully said. "I wish I could see him." Sam fell silent. She was crying now. Mulder stepped into the room. "Scully, Krycek is calling Skin Man to sit with him." Scully said, "Thanks, Mulder. What did the doctors say?" "They said that they want to run some tests to see what is wrong and what isn't. They said he's malnourished, that he just needs rest, and that he'll wake up in a few days maybe." "That's good news." "How long are you going to be here, Sam?" "A few days they said. They want to see if the baby is going to be alright. Oh Fox, today has been so difficult. Please tell me if you hear anything new." "I will, sis." A few days later, Doggett woke. He looked around the hospital room he was lying in. Samantha ran to him when he awoke. She then started to cry. "No, no, it's not true." "What's the matter? I'm sittin' here, ain't I?" "You were chosen to be left to die." Samantha cried. "How do ya know?" "I can tell by looking at you. It's a trick that the AHH's are given. Oh John, I can't lose you a second time." "I'm not goin' to die on you." Doggett said. He took her hand into his. "How is the little one?" "My pregnancy had some complications. Oh John, I can't do this." "Sam, your stronger than anyone I know. You can, you can. Oh Sam, if I do have a disease, I'm sure we'll find a way to fight it." Doggett said. He smiled at her, and Samantha felt that the world was so much brighter. "I missed you so much." "Come 'ere. I want to hold you. I spent my whole time in that hell wishin' that I could." Doggett said. She climbed into the bed with him. He held her close, kissing her head. "I missed you so much." "You already said that." "I know, but I just felt like saying it again." Samantha said. He smiled. "We'll take whatever is thrown at us. You know that." "Yeah." Samantha smiled. She sat up, kissing him. "I've wanted to do that for a very long time." "Me too. When I finally bust out of here, we're going to have a lot of fun, you hear? I want to live a bit." Doggett said. Samantha smiled back. She looked up to see her brother standing in the doorway. "Fox." Mulder smiled. "Hey Dogg Man!" "Hey Mulduh, how you been doin'?" "I've been better. This past month has been difficult. I must say that we wondered if we'd ever see you again. It's good to see you, it'll be better to see you out and about, though." "Yeah, I agree with you there." Doggett said. "You're not going to believe this." Mulder said. "On the night that you were abducted, Krycek saved Little John. He was too late to save you." "Alex Krycek? What ever for?" Doggett asked. "Because he is a member of the Resistance now." Samantha said. "He is? Wow, leave for a month and everything changes." "Not everything, John. Don't be silly." "Don't you like me silly?" Doggett asked, laughing. A doctor came into the room just as Samantha moved off of the bed. He said, "Agent Doggett, we have disturbing news for you." "Don't sugar coat it. Give it to me straight." Doggett said. "You have cancer in your stomach area, and you have cancer in your sinus cavity. We believe that with treatment we can control and possibly cure the problem, but chances are very very low that they will work." Doggett looked ashen for a moment. "That serious, huh? So basically I have six months or so to live." "I'd guess around there." The doctor said. "I'm so sorry to have to tell you this. It is very frightening to go through something like this." The doctor left. Samantha started to cry. She said, "I told you that you were marked to die. Oh John, I can't do this. Six months? Only about that?" "Sam, I'm sure we'll figure something out." Doggett was choking up a bit himself. He said, "We've beaten everythin' else. We'll beat this." Sam looked at Mulder for a moment. "Fox, I want to talk to you later. I want to be alone with John for now." Mulder nodded. He said, "If you need me, I'll be with Scully, Krycek, and the boys." Samantha sobbed. "They take everything away from me. If you had been smart you would have walked away, and you wouldn't be dealing with all of this." "Sam, you can't blame yourself for this. Come here." Doggett opened his arms. He had stood up from his bed. "Something will come to us in time." "For you?" "For me, and when we find this cure, we can heal some body else, and so forth. Sam, don't give up hope. If you gave up hope, you wouldn't be my girl. You hold your head up high and don't let this get you down now." Samantha looked into his eyes. She found strength in his. She hugged him. "Now, I think I'm going to need someone holdin' me up for a while. I'm facing death, and for the first time, I'm afraid." Doggett said, honestly. "I'll find a way. I love you. I really do." Samantha said. "I love you, too. I wish things would be better right away, but we can't just get that. I suppose I'll be here an awful lot. I hate hospitals." Doggett whined for a moment. Six months to live. What would he do in six months? What things would he accomplish? He stared out into the darkness of his room, noticing that darkness had filled him as well. He felt as if a death sentence had been placed upon him, and in so many ways it had been. This one couldn't be pardoned by a president, or reprieved to be reviewed by any governor. He was going to die, the finality of the truth sinking in. He thought about Samantha's face when she had learned of the illnesses inflicting his body. She was so ashen and upset. She was scared too. He felt his own fear rise in himself. Death came with his job, but not this slow killing pain. Not with a length of time given. He felt tears in his eyes. Anger took over his body as he thought about it. Why did this have to happen to him? What did he do to anyone? He didn't understand why he was being inflicted with these cancers. It angered him that Samantha found happiness with him, only for it to be taken from her so quickly. He only wanted things to be easier, that love would prevail and that things would grow easier. The thing that really upset him was that he didn't feel sick. Sure he was sore, but he didn't feel anything more than that. He was confused that he would be so ill and yet not feel anything about it. He was sure Samantha was suffering without him at home. He was sure that she was blaming herself for what was happening to him. He knew her too well. She could read his mind, but he could read her heart. He understood that she would take full responsibility for what had befallen him. He remembered vague things that had happened during the tests, and agony washed over him. The pain of the last month was too much to bear. He started to cry softly, not wanting to attract attention, for himself and for her. We, on our present life, Knew that the stars were right. That if you are the first to go, You'll leave a sign to let me know, Tell me so. Please, carry the Lantern lights. (Jagger, Richards) The next morning, Mulder, Scully, Samantha went to visit Doggett. When they arrived to see him, he was asleep in his bed. He looked peaceful. Mulder whispered to his sister, "I can't bear to wake him." Samantha looked very tired. She hadn't slept well the night before. She half smiled at him, before looking almost hollow. She was taking Doggett's illness very very hard. She noticed something about his chip. It was a new wave she was sure. He wouldn't be saved by it, it would kill him removed or left in. Much like Steve, Doggett had a permanent death sentence placed upon him. She looked back to her brother. She said, "Fox, I want to sit with him. Any of you are welcome to sit with me." "I'll sit with you." Scully offered. Samantha said, "Thank you. I think I might need it." They walked into the room, quietly so as not to wake him. They sat down in the uncomfortable chairs. Scully took Samantha's hand in hers. She whispered, "Where there is a will, there is a way." Samantha nodded. Mulder stood behind the chairs. He had one hand on his sister's shoulder. He sighed. Last night he had helped Scully console Samantha. The Gunmen had taken Little John for the night. Krycek had disappeared. He said something about finding a possible cure. Mulder had given in, letting him do what ever it was he did. He knew by now that Krycek wouldn't be foolish to betray him. If he betrayed Mulder, Krycek would have no protection. Doggett woke up, seeing them all sitting in the room. He said, "Good morin', everyone. What brings you 'ere so early?" Samantha said, "I just wanted to come and see you. John, you have a very very difficult road ahead of you." "Tell me about it. I can't take much more Jell-O." He said, cracking a smile. He grimaced as a bruise was tender when he moved. Samantha smiled for a brief moment. Doggett smiled back at her. He said, "I need somethin' to do. It's so dull in here. If I think one more time about what I have, I think I'll scream." Scully said, "You're in for a long haul there, then. It takes a long time to get used to it, but you will in time. The insufferable china doll treatment is worse." Doggett nodded. "I bet." Meanwhile Krycek was running around the clock. He had called the Lone Gunmen from various places that he had been to. He was searching for an answer, on a hunch that he thought might save Doggett's life, not only his, but others like him. He had found all the people willing to cooperate with him, knowing that this might be a dangerous idea, but if it was successful, the benefits would be immense. Krycek was dead tired. He had been going since the night before, and hadn't slept in two days nearly. He checked into a hotel room, ready to drop. He locked the five locks on the door inside. All hotel rooms out east had this customary number of locks. Once that had been done, he had stripped down to just pants. He was so tired and wanted to sleep the night away, but felt that a shower might be a better plan first. He let out a sigh. Hopefully this would work. As he stood under the warm shower spray, he thought of Samantha's pain stricken face the night before. As he looked at her, he saw her light flicker, and then die suddenly. It was so tragic to see her wilt like this after all of her strength. He dried himself off, dragging his tired form to the single bed he had. Noticing all the healthy romantic relationships around him made him all that more lonely. Back when he had been working with Marita he had someone, but she was almost always willing to shove a knife into his back. If he could only find someone who would love him back. He fell asleep, letting the sweet peace of sleep take him. He would seek the persons he thought would help him. He hoped that his elaborate theory would pull off. It would crush Samantha and all the others he had gotten hopes up for it this failed. The next morning dawned. Krycek woke up looking around the room. He sighed. Today he would be talking with some of the people that agreed to try his theory. They would have to decide how they would be doing this as well. He got up, dressing himself. He didn't even go to the cafeteria for the contenetial breakfast, he would worry about food later. This mission was too important. When he got to where the people waited for him, he got out. There were five of them. Two of them were AHH's and the rest were all under a death sentence. He greeted them all, noticing one in particular. She was a little younger than him, but she looked so fragile. Her eyes held a mixed wisdom and innocence, and when she smiled at him, he felt endeared to her. She said, "My name is Jane. I hear you are trying to find a new way to possibly heal us." "That I am. I am going to try something that's never been done before. I think it's because no one has ever thought of it." Krycek said, a smile breaking out on his face, despite himself. She smiled back at him. "The two AHH's are Brian and Kurt. The others behind me are Robert and Laura." Krycek shook all of their hands. He noticed them looking at his one armedness. It had plagued him before. They just nodded, and it became inessential and unimportant. "What is your plan?" Jane asked. Her blonde hair shined as she moved her head. "My plan, let's go somewhere before we start to speak of that. I don't just anyone hearing this plan." Krycek said. "I understand. Let's go somewhere that is more private." Jane led the group to a house held by MUFON. It was deserted for the day, so Jane could meet Alex Krycek. He was in Baltimore now, so the D.C. team got him to meet, otherwise he might have been disregarded. Jane said when they entered the house, "I hear you work with Samantha Mulder. What is she like?" "Right now? She feels like she's in a losing battle. It's a very very long story." "Oh? Why don't you give us some back ground into what made you contact us." Jane said, putting a pot of coffee on. "She is losing her fiance to two different cancers. He was just returned to her just recently, and the chip in him won't do a thing for him. I'm trying to find another way to heal not only him, but others." Krycek said. "I see. How is Mulder by the way? He might remember me from the tests." Jane replied. "He's busy doing so many things. Being a father, and he's trying to help his sister." Krycek said. "Alright. So, this plan, would you mind telling it to us?" "Ok. My plan is this: I get AHH's to donate blood. We try to do a sort of transfusion into a person left to die by Them. If this works like I hope it might, we could save Doggett's life, and many others. It would sure stick a big knife in that Cancer Man's back." "I see. Do you think that this will work?" "I sure hope it will. I know it's dangerous, but if we don't try and it could work we'd lose several people." "We'll have to research this for a few months. I don't think you should get Samantha's hopes up just yet." Jane smiled. "You're trying to do the right thing. I'm glad." Krycek smiled. "Yeah well, it might make up for all the things I've done wrong." A few days later, Doggett was released from the hospital. He demanded that he be released, not wanting to waste away in the hospital. He signed an agreement that stated that if he felt ill he would return as a in patient, but would be an out patient for the time being. When he got home finally after being away from it so long, he found everyone to be there. Krycek was the only one missing. He said when he entered his house, "Boy does it feel good to be home!" Langly laughed, "I bet it does." Mulder said, "You'll finally put an end to the bickering among these three about who sits by Samantha." Doggett rolled his eyes. "Were they arguin' about that?" "Yep, twice a week. Every week." Mulder sighed. Doggett laughed. "This seat next to Samantha, that's mine. Got it boys?" The Gunmen looked at Doggett and all nodded. Doggett nodded his head with authority. He then started to laugh at how silly it must have looked. Samantha came out of the kitchen with Scully. She said, "John, you're the guest of honor tonight. Okay, not really a guest, but the person of honor I suppose." Doggett smiled. He whispered, "I hope I'm not just that later." Samantha blushed for a moment, "John, don't be vulgar." She smiled, giving him a quick kiss. "Let's get sat down." They all sat down, waiting for Samantha to serve up the meal. Doggett asked, "Does any one know what Krycek is up to?" "He's trying to do some type of research." Frohike said. "He reports once a day to us, telling us that he's making ground breakin Resist or Die (Part Five :Happiness Acheived, Devil Deal Made) Author: Cinnamon Scully Later on that week, Doggett was released from the hospital. He went home with Samantha. There was to be a party that night, celebrating a victory not only over death, but over the aliens by granting them this wish of survival. When he arrived home, he was not surprised to see the large gathering in his living room. The first thing he did was outstretch his hand to Krycek. "I guess you're the man I should be thankin' for figurin' this out." "Yeah, I guess. It was just a hunch, really." Krycek said, smiling. He sat with Jane on the couch, his arm around her. "So who is the little lady?" Krycek smiled, "This is Jane. She and I figured out the whole thing together." "I think you figured something else out, together I might add." Doggett said, winking at him. Mulder stood up when he saw Samantha and Doggett walk into the room. He hugged his sister, and clapped Doggett on the back. "Welcome home. Scully should be out here any minute. She's just changing Little John." "Alright. So what we doin' tonight?" Doggett asked. "Just having a party. Why does everything have to be about the Resistance? Can't we just kick back for a night?" Mulder asked. "I totally agree with you there." He held Samantha's hand, and they sat down next to Krycek and Jane. Samantha smiled as she lay her head down on his shoulder. The Gunmen came in arguing about something, as usual. "Hey, I get to talk to them first." "Why you?" Langly demanded. "Cause I was the one who told Samantha there was a miracle waiting, you dolt." Frohike snapped back. "We all helped. We don't have to talk to either of them in any particular order. Did you ever think of that?" Byers said. "Just who was asking you, Narc?" Langly demanded. Krycek rolled his eyes, sighing. He leaned towards Doggett, whispering, "You think those three will ever stop arguing about anything?" "Nah. They'll argue until their faces turns blue." Both men started to laugh. Samantha smiled at all three of them. "You don't have to decide an order. Why don't you all come and just talk to us. Have you ever thought of that?" She asked with an eyebrow raised. "No." Frohike said, sort of ashamed of himself. Byers sighed, knowing he had just suggested that. Scully came down the stairs. "Sorry I kept you guys all waiting. He was particularly finicky about being changed." Mulder took Little John from Scully. He sighed. "I hate when he's like that." "Tell me about it." Scully said. After everyone had left, Samantha smiled at Doggett, while they sat on the couch. She sighed. "Welcome home, John." "It is great to be home. Do you know that I never want to see another plate of Jell-O ever again? I hate the stuff." Samantha laughed. "I suppose that you do." Doggett stopped her from getting up. She looked at him with concern in her eyes. He hugged her suddenly. She asked, "What is it, John?" "I just wanted to make sure you were still here. It's been a roller coaster the past few months. I just want to be sure." "John, you know it is." She gave him a kiss. "I'm going to get a snack, alright?" He watched her get up, disappearing into the kitchen. He smiled to himself, knowing that for the time being at least things were going well. He smiled when she came back out with some ice cream. She sat down next to him, eating it while he watched her. She said, "So, now that you're back, and the house is finally empty of the wild party, and I can only wonder what Fox and Dana have planned, what would you like to do?" "Hmm, it's up to you. Anything really." Doggett said. "I don't know." She took another bite of ice cream. He asked her, "Have you thought of any names yet?" "Not any ones in particular. What names do you like?" She asked, smiling at him. "I sorta like the names Andrew and Stephanie. How about you?" "Those are good names. I like Andrew a lot. It's got a good ring to it, Andrew Doggett does." She smiled. "Yeah, it does, doesn't it. Sort of like Samantha Doggett, you think?" Doggett said, smiling at her, before he kissed her. "Yeah. I do agree with you there. When are we going to set our date anyway? Before the next major crisis please." Samantha said. "I agree with you on that. We don't want it to interfere with your brother's wedding. It should be our own special day too." Doggett said. "Yeah. She leaned in towards him, placing her finished ice cream bowl down. She gave him a kiss. "Why don't we talk about that later? I just want to enjoy being with you for the time being. It might be nice after all." "I think it'll be more than nice." Doggett laughed deep down in his throat. "Oh, and what makes you say that?" Samantha asked. "Cause I know so." Doggett said, kissing her more passionately. "I guess you are the authority on that." She smiled. "You bet I am." Mulder smiled at Scully. He mouthed silently, Scully smiled at him suddenly. She took his cue. They trooped down the hall as silently as they could, so not to wake him again. Mulder smiled once he got the door closed. His intense eyes were staring at Scully. She wasn't facing him as he stared right away. She gasped when she turned around. "Mulder, don't stare at me like that." "Why not stare at the most beautiful woman in the world like that." Mulder said, his voice growing husky. He looked at her beautiful blue eyes for a moment. She said, "It's sort of scary, that's all." "Is it?" Mulder wasn't too upset by her admission. He knew that she knew that he would never hurt her. He stepped closer to her, touching her face with his hand. He leaned in, kissing her softly at first. She let go of all doubts, snaking a hand around to the back of his neck. She willingly parted her lips, allowing his tongue entrance. He smiled against her lips, before he took the invitation. Scully felt that this was what she was well deserved after watching all the horrible things of the past year or more. Things were actually going well for a change, and though things were difficult still, she knew that no matter what that he would be with her. He broke the kiss off, his hazel eyes changing to a dark green. It was when his eyes were this shade that she knew he was the most intense. He still had a hand on her face, holding it almost. She looked into his eyes, hoping he saw the naked love for him in them. He caught the signal, giving her a lopsided classic Mulder grin, the type of grin that made him look almost 20 years younger. He nibbled on his own lip for a moment. He knew that the action had always made Scully attracted to him, though he didn't want her to know that he knew that little secret. She tilted her head, as if she was about to shoot down one of his theories. She sighed, knowing that no matter what she did, he would still be doing that enticing move. He laughed then, a rich deep throaty laugh. One that Scully knew that he was full of desire, that passion for her had taken over his senses. He kissed her, as if marking her as his own, taking her mouth as his own possession. He ran his hand from her cheek to the back of her neck, running fingers through her hair. She responded by snaking an arm around, ruffling his hair, feeling its coarseness, yet like him the refined sleekness of it. He had pulled her closer to himself, and she knew that unless the baby woke that they would be taking this a bit further. Mulder lifted her up, still kissing her. He felt her legs wrap around his waist. He walked slowly towards the bed. He laid her down on the bed, breaking off the kiss. She looked disappointed for a moment, then she smiled. Mulder had reached up over his head, pulling his shirt over his head. His bare chest was revealed, and Scully smiled. He gave her that devilish smile. Scully felt his hands move under her own shirt. She gasped as she felt his hands on her skin. He smiled at her, knowing the action made her full of desire. He raised an eyebrow, in an indication that he wanted to take it off of her. She immediately obliged about the whole affair. That greeted her with another lopsided grin. It made him look sexy. "You look good, Scully." He said it low and husky. She felt herself begin to throb between her legs. He saw the black lace bra she had on. "Good choice, but it must come off." She reached underneath her back, finding the clasp. She quickly undid it. Mulder breathed, "Better." He peeled the undergarment off. He began to suckle her breasts, which always made her moan out softly. It was their way of slowly reaching their utopia. Mulder stopped for a moment, a gasp of disappointment escaping her as he moved away from her. He unbuttoned the jeans he was wearing, having been constricted long enough. He shimmed out of them, his boxers sliding off with them. He stood gloriously naked in front of her. She smiled. He took a step towards her. He growled, "You have to be naked too, you know." She nodded. She silently took her own pants off, panties coming with her own pants. She smiled at him, as he gasped. "You are so beautiful, Scully." He kissed her before she could answer. His hand found a nipple, and he lightly teased it. She arched into it, gasping against his kiss. He moved her to a lying down position, pinning her underneath him. She could only smile at him. He gently spread her legs, knowing that she was ready, as ready as he was. He slowly entered her at first, wanting this to last as long as possible. He knew that she was slick and ready. He began to pump in and out of her slowly, but as his desire filled him, he increased his speed. She ground into him, trying to find that release she had dreamt of while he was missing. He matched her intensity with deeper, faster thrusts. He knew that they were both close, as his cock moved faster in and out of her. She tightened around his large cock, as he thrust harder. He wanted that release. She moaned out, coming close to the edge. He grunted as he increased his speed, wanting only release. It finally came, as she tightened around him, then spasmed. Her cry of his name was what sent him over the edge. They collapsed sated, ready to sleep in each others embrace. Mulder and Scully woke the next morning. Mulder asked her, "Scully, we really ought to set a date for our wedding." "Hmm, what day do you think will work? I don't think we can afford to be making a big production out of this. We should have this as soon as possible. Before we know it, we may find ourselves in the middle of the next huge crisis." "I agree. How about next Friday. You notify your family, and I'll notify everyone else. Mulder said. She gave him a kiss, getting up to get dressed. He watched her body moving out of under the covers. "Get up and get dressed, lazy bones." She ordered him, a smile playing across her lips. He did as told. Mulder said, "You make breakfast and take care of Little John. I'm going to tell Sam and Dogg Man, alright?" "Go ahead Mulder." She said, giving him one more kiss. He took the short walk over to Doggett's place. He knocked on the door, hearing Doggett shout, "Yeah, just a minute." The door opened, Doggett smiled, "What can I do for ya, Mulduh?" "We're going to set our big day for next Friday. We want this done and out of the way before some stupid crisis takes place." Mulder said, a lopsided grin playing across his lips. "I see. Sam! Your brother's wedding is next Friday, you want ours to be on Tuesday!" He shouted to her. Sam came down the stairs, she said, "No John, I want mine to be at least a week apart from Fox's. How about the Saturday after that." She said, kissing him when she got to where Doggett stood. "Alright. I'm supposing you have to go and tell the Gunmen and Skinner." Doggett said. "Yep. I thought I'd call them. Scully's making breakfast as we speak." "Ah, I see. We should have some breakfast ourselves." Doggett said, smiling. Mulder nodded. "You guys have fun. I'm sure Little John will make breakfast an interesting game." "I bet he does, Fox. I'm sure he's not any worse than you were." "How would you know?" Mulder said, a smile playing across his lips. "Lucky guess. Run along before Dana gets crabby." Samantha said, giving Mulder a hug. Mulder smiled as he walked away. It felt good that for once life was a bit normal compared to the roller coaster of the last few months, if not the past few years. He walked back to his house, smiling. He knew that Scully would have breakfast ready, unless Little John was particularly crabby this morning. The day had come for Mulder and Scully to finally wed. Mulder was nervous as he waited to get ready. He knew that this was what he wanted, what was right, but he was afraid that marriage would change what they had to something he couldn't recognize. The wedding was simple, with Father McQue presiding. Though the Catholic rule required six months of marriage counseling and classes of Catholic rules, McQue allowed them to skip the classes. Scully had pleaded with him that they had been trying to get married for a while now, and each time they would set the date, the world would crash around their ears. He consented to the union as long as later on down the road Mulder would agree to taking some type of classes. He stood in the waiting area with Doggett, who looked very cool and calm. Mulder's palms sweated. He asked nervously, "What if this is wrong?" "Wrong, listen to yourself. How on earth could this be wrong?" Doggett asked. "You're right. But what if marriage makes things so much more complicated?" Mulder asked, his mind was in over drive. "Calm down, before you know it, you'll be thinking this is the best thing you ever did." Doggett said. "Next week you tell me the same thing, okay?" "Yeah." Mulder nodded. "Go stand by the altar, I have to escort Samantha. You'll do just fine. Don't be so antsy." Doggett smiled at him, before he left. Mulder exited the area to stand up by the altar, facing the back of the church. He clasped his hands together, trying to keep them from shaking. The music started to play, signifying the wedding party's entrance before the bride. It was a small party, but fit just right. Doggett and Samantha walked up the aisle, separating at the altar to go to the bride's side, and to the groom's. The Gunmen walked, single file, followed by Skinner. It was time. The music for the bride's entrance started to play. Mulder felt like he was going to faint for a moment. Scully hadn't even entered the church yet. Scully finally made her entrance. She was stunning in a white dress, it was tight fitting, and slightly low cut. The lace trimming made her look beautiful. Mulder could only gape at her as she confidently walked down the aisle. Bill Scully Jr. was the one giving her away. They progressed slowly, until Mulder felt as if he was about to die. He wanted this to be over, so he could officially say that Scully was his wife. She made it finally to the altar, Father McQue starting the customary speech. To Mulder, the ceremony was a blur. He could only remember her face as she gazed into his. The words the Father said did not register on his ears. He just knew the right times to respond. Suddenly the part that he had been waiting for arrived. He got to kiss the bride, his bride, his Scully, now his wife. The group applauded them as they sealed their fates forever, now entangled and intertwined with each other. Mulder felt as if the world had finally given him that break he was looking for. After the ceremony, the reception shortly began afterwards. They had reserved a banquet hall at the restaurantm, Paper Moons. They would have, much as the ceremony was, a small reception. Doggett offered to fix Samantha's plate, after the speeches were given. She accepted, shushing him so Mulder could speak. "Now, I don't know about you, but I'm really waiting for that next bad thing to happen. How about you? Alright, now that we're beyond that, I'd like to say that it took an awfully long time to get here. Damn, it took a long time. If there is one thing though, no one can say, you two rushed into things, you aren't thinking clearly. Blah blah, you know the drill. If there is one thing, I'd like to say that my partner, now my wife has been my soul mate for so long, I don't want to get sappy on you or anything, but without her by my side, defending me, shooting me once, and watching my back, I might not stand here before you today." Frohike heckled Mulder for a moment, "Yeah, you needed her to cover you pathetic ass!" Mulder smiled, before continuing, "Yeah, but Frohike, my ass is so much better than yours, think about that one for a moment. Who wouldn't want to save this nice piece of flesh? As I was trying to say, may she continue doing as she has always done, just with a new title." Scully got up, giving Mulder a kiss. "I certainly won't be as wordy as he was, at least I'll try not to be. I know that a long time ago this should have happened, but as Mulder said, without him watching over me, I might not be here either. I may have had to face death innumerable times, but I never once had to face it alone. Not even while I lay in a hospital stricken with a terminal illness did I ever face death alone. Mulder was there, not only in spirit, but racing against that clock to save my life. I hope that he'll be around to do that, but I also hope that he won't have to do that so often. It is nice knowing he is there, but I don't like facing those situations any more than if I were alone." The room applauded her speech. Frohike said, "See Mulder, you should take some lessons from her." Mulder just shook his head, "Frohike, grow up." "Only if you do first." Frohike said, laughing. Doggett said, "Hey, hey you two, we don't need a brawl ruinin' the wedding. Besides, next week I'd like to have Mulder there, at my wedding, not lyin' in a hospital. Stop it." The room laughed at the statement. Krycek asked loudly, not able to hide it from them anymore, "How do you ever live with each other any ways?" They shrugged. "Just do, I guess." Byers replied. Mulder said, "Enough, I want my food already." The CSM was speaking to an ABH. "I want to know how that woman foils me every time. I can't possibly get the answer right. I plot to do something so I can find out what she is, so I can reproduce it, and she evades me every time!" CSM was very shaken by the whole affair. "She walked in here, and stole back Mulder's baby like it was a walk in the park. On top of it, Agent Doggett lying dying a hospital and now he's healed. I can't do a thing against her." The ABH said, "I can make a compromise with you. I can't give you Samantha Mulder right away, we want to know something about her as well. I can get you her, only when she does not suspect you anymore. Back off, and wait to strike. She heads a Resistance to us, we want to know what that is so we can destroy it. I give you Samantha Mulder, you give me the details of the Resistance." "That could take years! I don't have years to play around with games like this. I'm an old man. If I were only 20 years younger." "I only offer you this once. You take it, or you leave it. Take your choice. I may find myself in trouble with the leaders for offering you the best test subject of all time." "Best test subject of all time is she? Well, I do think I could benefit you with this as well. I could help step up colonization by being able to make other humans what she is now. But only if I am saved in the end, and not taken over." "I must get back to you on that before I can approve your immunity from take over." "Fine. When you come back with your answer will I only give you mine." Cancer Man puffed on his cigarette. "Say this takes years to accomplish this. Do I still get protection from you?" "Yes. All will be set later, depending upon the answers I receive." The ABH said, his voice unemotional as always. "Go, talk to your leaders. I want to plan how I would successfully execute this plan in the first place." The next week Doggett understood exactly how Mulder had felt at the altar. He was nervous, wondering what it would be like to be married again, and to Samantha Mulder. He wondered if it was the right plan, but underneath all of his jitters he knew it was the right plan. Mulder was in Doggett's role of the past week. He said, "It's going to be fine. Don't worry so much. You'll be glad that you did this." "Did I tell you that last week?" Doggett asked, pacing before Mulder. "Yeah, I think you did. I took the advice, and look how happy I am now." He gave Doggett a sarcastic smile, over emphasizing his happiness. "That isn't helpin', Mulduh. Cut it out." Doggett said. "It wasn't meant to." Doggett glared at him for a moment. Mulder said, "I got to get going, just walk over to that altar. Things will be fine." Doggett nodded. He walked over to the altar, facing the back. He remembered his first wedding, how it was so over blown, 1000 guests, most of them he had never seen were present, his wife insisting that America be invited. It had too many flowers. It was just so overproduced, that now as he stood at the simple altar he knew that his first marriage had been a mistake. He saw Mulder and Scully enter the back, walking slowly up to the altar, separating much as Samantha and he had the week before. Scully gave him a large smile of reassurance. The Gunmen followed Krycek and Jane, then progressed down the aisle. Doggett was getting more and more nervous as the moments ticked by. He thought for a moment, remembering the Princess Bride's bishop stating what Marriage was. It was just his jitters getting to him. She entered at the music, walking in a simple white dress. To him, she looked stunning. She smiled confidently, walking her way slowly, Skinner the one giving her away. It had been decided that Skinner would, since Mulder was the best man. Doggett stared for a moment, feeling the world around him and her disappear. This was what real weddings were meant to be like. She made it up to where he stood, facing him. Father McQue lead the ceremony again, knowing that though Samantha wasn't Catholic, Doggett was, though he didn't practice as much as he should. Just as the ceremony had been a blur for Mulder, so it went for Doggett. He heard the permission to kiss the bride, and so he did. His future had been sealed more than it had been in the past months. An Alien abduction could have not sealed him into the Resistance as much as this did. He heard the applause around him, knowing that not only he thought this was right, but so did Samantha, and everyone present. When he stopped kissing Samantha, Mulder said, "Now you're my brother in law. Think about that for a moment. We're family." "Mulduh, I think ever since your sister showed up we were family. Let's get to the reception. I'm hungry." "I know that feeling, had it last week myself." Mulder said with a laugh. Title: Resist or Die (Part Six: Old Habits Die Hard) Author: Cinnamon Scully A couple of months later, Doggett came down the stairs one evening. Samantha was lying on the sofa, fast asleep. Pregnancy was wearing her out. Doggett smiled when he saw her. He didn't want to disturb her. Mulder and Scully were to come over for dinner in a little while. He prepared a nice dinner of pork chops, allowing Samantha to sleep. He knew it was his best prepared meal. Mulder and Scully had decided to join them for dinner at Doggett's house that night, mainly because Samantha was so tired all the time. It worried everyone, so they took it easy for her. Doggett set the table, smiling at Samantha on the sofa. She had her hand holding her head up, elbow resting on the sofa arm. The sofa reclined, and her legs were supported by the foot stool. She looked peaceful. Once he had gotten dinner mostly prepared, he set it on the table, knowing that Mulder and Scully would be there any moment. He walked over to Samantha, brushing a hand gently on her cheek. She blinked, "What, is it supper time?" Her voice was full of sleep and she yawned. "Yeah, Mulduh and Scully should be coming over anytime soon." Doggett said, smiling. "I can't believe they still call themselves by their last names. She doesn't have his name does she?" "I don't think so." "It's still silly." "I know. Now, I'll help you to the table. You should get sat before Little John shows up, demanding all that attention he seems to. They have gotten louder since he's arrived. Mulder has got to learn how to calm the kid down." "Hey, that's not our problem, especially at night, at least not yet." She kissed him. "Besides, he's cute." "I'll give you that, now let's get going." Doggett said. He put the foot rest down, helping her up. He lead her to the table slowly, her ankles swelling. "I think I'd much more welcome the tests compared to this." She was joking, and they both laughed at how un true it was. She finally made it to the chair he had pulled out for her. Being six months pregnant did not agree with her. The door bell rang, with Doggett rushing to answer the door. He opened it, finding Mulder, Scully, and Little John on the other side. "Come on in. Supper's on the table." Mulder and Scully walked over to the table, smiling when they saw Samantha already sitting down. Scully took the high chair that they used, setting it down next to her chair, then placed Little John into the chair. It was a production that happened at every meal. Mulder had already started helping Doggett serve the meal. He served Scully and served his own plate. Doggett served Samantha's plate before his, and served his own plate last. "So, why do you think it's been so quiet lately?" Doggett asked. "Hmm, guess they're either plotting some evil plot like they do in Bond, or they don't know what to do for the time being. I'd say we should take the quiet time while we got it." Mulder said. Scully nodded. "I agree, who knows when the next stupid thing will happen." They left it at that for the rest of the meal. Later on that night, Samantha slept fitfully. She dreamed of the tests, remembering them, some from early childhood, other times from her adult test sessions. In her sleep she had cried out. She was rolling from side to side, as if she were trying to escape the person who was torturing her. Doggett woke, trying to calm her down. He was afraid something would happen to the baby. She woke, her eyes clouded for a moment. She was crying and she repeated over and over again, "Fox, forgive me." Doggett wondered what the phrase meant. He shook her, hoping to take her from her stupor. She blinked, looking at Doggett, "John? Where am I?" "You're here at home. It's okay." Doggett said softly, trying to reassure her, though knowing that she was having a difficult time. "What do you need forgiveness for, Sam?" "I, I was dreaming that I was with Them. I only wanted to die, oh I'm so sorry for wanting that." Sam said, crying. She had turned away from him, not wanting to upset him. Doggett moved over to where she was, wrapping his arms around her, speaking softly into her ear, "You have every right to feel that way, but you shouldn't have to now. It may happen again, but some one will always love you." Samantha started to sob, unable to control her feelings anymore. She said, "It was terrible. I hate the night mares the most, I always have. I hate them because I can't block them out like I can the tests while they are happening." Doggett kissed her temple, whispering, "It's alright now. I'm here, and if you ever need to talk to me, I'll always be there. If you ever need to talk to Mulduh, he'll always be ready to talk to you. You know that Scully will too. Sam, don't face this alone." "I'm not. John, I might not have felt all those nights like dying if I would have had you then. I can never thank you enough." Samantha said, turning around in his arms. She saw his eyes in the moonlight. They were filled with sadness. "You going to be okay?" Doggett asked. "Yeah, I will be now. I'm tired." Samantha said, a yawn taking over. She fell asleep, and Doggett could only smile. The next morning, Doggett called Mulder while Samantha slept. He didn't want to wake her, especially since she was sleeping peacefully. "Mulduh, I think something is up with Sam." "What do you mean, Dogg Man?" Mulder answered, his voice tiny in the phone to Doggett's ear. "She had bad nightmares last night, about the tests. She asked forgiveness from you, for wishing to die up there, I guess." "Me? Why me? Is she okay right now?" Mulder asked, concern in his voice. "Yeah, she's sleeping yet. I didn't want to disturb her, she just got comfortable and peaceful. I don't know what to tell you besides that she was upset last night." Doggett said. "Is there a time that I could maybe talk to her, we both could if you want." Mulder asked. "Hmm, don't see why not. It might help her let go of all of that, make it a bit better at least." Doggett said. "How about Scully and I come over for breakfast. We'll leave Little John at the Gunmen's, so we can just talk." Mulder said. "Sounds good. What time you plan on being here?" Doggett asked. "As soon as I can get dressed, Scully to agree with the plan, and the Gunmen to take Little John for a bit." Mulder said. "About a half an hour then." "Yep. About then. See you then." Mulder said. "Yep." Doggett hung up. He went up the stairs to see if she was still asleep. When he got there, she was tossing and turning in her sleep. She was muttering again. "No, no, don't do this to me. Please don't." Doggett kneeled on the floor next to the bed. He took her hand into his, whispering, "Wake up, Sam." Samantha jerked away from him. It pierced him in his heart, but he understood that it wasn't him she pulled away from, it was Them. He kissed her on her cheek, hoping that would wake her. It worked. She looked over into his face, her eyes full of pain and fear. She began to cry, knowing that she felt guilty for getting upset. She sat up, hugging him. She sobbed into his shoulder, apologizing to him. "I'm so sorry, John. I don't mean to be upset like this all the time." "Don't worry about it. It's not your fault. Just let it all out, don't keep inside. You'll feel better if you let it out." He said, soothing her. She shook in his arms, her pain was so intense and she felt as she had when she had no one that loved her. She turned her face into his shoulder, in attempt to hide what she felt. She hated being upset like this. Part of it was her pregnancy, the other the memories that she carried with her. He rocked her back and forth, in an attempt to make her feel safer. He wanted her to feel loved and secure. She began to relax, sighing, but still holding on to him. A voice down stairs let Doggett know that Mulder and Scully were there. Mulder had shouted up the stairs that they were there. Doggett helped Samantha up, taking her hand into his. He lead her downstairs slowly. When they reached the living room, Mulder and Scully stood up. Mulder asked, "Are you okay, Sam?" Samantha nodded, her lip trembling again. She looked at Doggett for a moment, her eyes pleading if she could hug her brother. Doggett nodded yes, urging her to do so. She hugged Mulder, crying all over again. Mulder held his sister close to him. He knew that she was having a hard time with all of what was going on. He placed his chin on the top of her head, his hand holding her close to him. Scully asked Doggett quietly, "What did she dream about?" "She dreamt about the tests. She says she dreams about those things from time to time, especially after a testing session." Doggett replied quietly, not wanting to upset Samantha further. Mulder whispered to his sister, "Sam, why don't we sit down on the couch. You can tell us all about your dreams there. It might help you." She nodded silently, allowing Mulder to lead her to the couch. Mulder helped her sit down. He looked at Doggett, indicating that he should sit next to Samantha. Doggett took a seat next to her. Samantha took his hand into hers. She looked down for a while before beginning. "When I was first tested on, I was so afraid all the time. Sometimes when I dream, I remember what it was like to be that little girl that I once was. I dream about being so scared, and when they let the Black Oil fall on me, I would cry and scream. It would always exhaust me, the energy of the Black Oil infusing itself to me, and my struggles." She bit her lip to prevent herself from crying. Doggett gave her hand a gentle squeeze. "I always wanted to die the most when I would come back to earth, and all my memories that I had kept from myself up there would come back to me in my sleep. I always prayed for the end, and I never got it. It made me feel as if I wasn't worth anything and that I deserved what I was going through." She bit her lip again, turning her head into Doggett's shoulder for a moment before continuing. "Later on I began to lose emotional feelings when I was up there. I never allowed myself to show pain while I was with Them. It made me feel like I had given Them the satisfaction They craved. Of course when They wanted me to break in front of Them, They would force me to dispose of the dead before testing me. I always have nightmares of that. It still makes me sick to my stomach." Mulder was angered that this had to happen to her. He controlled his emotions for her though. He knew she was already upset enough. He whispered to her, "We'll stop those tests on not only you, but everyone some day. We can and we will." Samantha gave him a weak smile. She was a little wore out by telling them about these experiences. Doggett put his arm around her shoulder, pulling her towards him. She put her head down on his shoulder, sighing. "I hope so." Krycek sat in the apartment that Jane and he had gotten. He was lost in thought, and guilt was washing over him in waves. He was feeling bad for the past wrongs he had a long time ago. He couldn't believe the things he had done in the past. Most of it was for Cancer Man, and that angered him more. He knew that Jane would say he was doing such good now that it would cancel out the bad, but he felt that it did not. He was worrying about the things that he had done. He wondered if Mulder even felt that he could trust him. He found things to be so new in this Resistance. It wasn't a thing like the other one he had participated in. The other one was so violent and so dark that he often wondered if he had been set up in the first place. Samantha's Resistance was so different to him. They took care of the victims, they tried to plan a way to stop from being abducted again. It was so human in its nature, and that compassion was so new to him. He remembered when he had first found about Samantha Mulder's return. She had been beautiful and mysterious, but in the end just not his type. Besides, she could beat the crap out of him at will. That never sat well with him. He remembered attempting to shoot her, and attempting to shoot Doggett shortly after, going in for the kill shot that time. He felt guilty, and he wondered deep down why she had ever forgiven him. It perplexed him. Jane sat down next to him. She asked, "What are you so busy thinking about?" "Nothing." He lied, knowing that he shouldn't thrust his pain onto her. "You know that is not true. Tell me, what were you thinking about?" Krycek turned dark eyes on her. He was in a dark mood. "Everything I've done wrong I guess." "Alex, you've done so much good, too. You can't expect yourself to be perfect. I wouldn't love you as much if you were perfect." Jane said, giving him a kiss. Krycek smiled a bit, before saying, "You didn't know me then." "I know you now, how many times must I tell you that?" She said, brushing a lock of long, wavy, blonde hair from her face. "I killed Mulder's father, Scully's sister, that's not all. I tried to kill Samantha and Doggett. You know what Doggett said to me before Samantha saved his life? He said that I would be damned for all time. Maybe he is right about that." "No, you know something, I believe God forgives us for sins if we do good and ask him to forgive us. You can't judge yourself since you are not God. The only thing you do is to examine your conscience, and make your faults less of a flaw, but a part of your wonderful character." He smiled, giving her a kiss. "You always know how to make me feel better. Thank you." "No problem. I'm glad to help you. Alex, you saved not only Doggett's life, you saved mine, and for that I can not thank you enough." Jane smiled at him, giving him a kiss. She knew that he was feeling guilty a lot about a past that he could not change, but could make up for instead. Krycek knew that he was lucky to have met Jane. She was a breath of fresh air from Marita. While Marita had been dangerously sexy, Jane was more sweet and strong. She didn't assert herself over him, and he didn't over her. With Marita it had been a power struggle, who had more. He put his hand up to the back of her neck, pulling her in further for a kiss. He loved Jane more than anyone he had ever met. She didn't make him feel bad for having one arm, she didn't make him feel as if he had to be the bad boy that he knew he had always been. She just let him be himself. She moved, to sitting on his lap. She kissed him again, and curled up on him. She knew he enjoyed sitting with her like that. She nuzzled her nose into his shoulder. Krycek smiled. She was a bit smaller than him, and he knew that with her cancer gone she would be happier now. He was glad that he had been a part of making that dream come true. Though the relationship had seemed an unlikely one, they found themselves wishing it had happened sooner. They knew it felt right, and that though it might look awkward to anyone who knew one or the other, it was something they both wanted. Krycek was of course wearing his leather jacket, a white tee shirt underneath, and a pair of jeans to complete it. It was one of his favorite outfits. Jane commented on it as well. She had always liked it too. She asked, "Would you mind taking the jacket off? It's uncomfortable to lay on." Krycek slid it off slowly. He didn't want her to fall off his lap onto the floor. Once he had accomplished the goal of removing the jacket, she cuddled up to him all over again. He could only hold her to his chest. She eventually fell asleep, her arms wrapping her arms around him. Krycek knew that he was stuck, but he didn't mind. He didn't have anything to do at that moment any ways. Once Samantha was asleep again, Mulder asked if he could talk to Doggett. He asked, "Is Sam having any difficulties with her pregnancy?" "Not that I know of. She seems to be healthy and doing just fine. The doctor said that she was doing fine after that incident when I was returned." Doggett said softly, his voice full of concern and a bit of fear for what it might mean. Mulder sighed. "I hope that her being an Alien Human Hybrid isn't going to affect how this child comes out to the extent that she has to let it go. That would break her heart. She's had enough heart break." "I agree." Scully sighed, "Mulder, she just needs a vacation staying at home not worrying about the Resistance and things like that. Maybe you could take care of things while she's taking care of herself. It might help her a lot." "I agree with Dana." Doggett said, looking up from the spot on the floor he had been intently staring at. "Now, the only problem with that plan, and I agree with you totally, is how do we convince her that she should take a break and just relax." Milder asked, wondering how he would tackle this. "Let me handle it, Mulder." Scully said. "I can talk woman to woman with her. I can make more sense to her about this, and I won't be making her feel like I'm stereotyping pregnant women as weaklings." "Alright Scully, she's all yours. You try to convince her to take a break. I hope you can. I'm sure she would love to have this baby." Doggett quietly said, "I think we should let her rest for now. She needs to sleep. Let's just hope that she sleeps more peacefully now than she did last night. It was a difficult night for her." "Yes, it was. I hope she doesn't have too many of those nights from now on." Mulder said. Doggett said, "I think I'll go and sit in the living room with her if you don't mind. I want to be there if she should have a nightmare all of the sudden. It would make me feel better." "Go right ahead. It would be good for someone to be with her if she should have a night mare. I'm sure there was never anyone there before, but she does need it now." Scully said. Doggett went back into the living room. He sat down on the sofa, next to her sleeping form, by her head. She was peaceful looking, and he spread a blanket over her tired form. He wished that she would be allowed to have happiness now. He hoped that she would be able to just let all these things go, if only for a while. When Mulder and Scully got home, Krycek was waiting for them in the living room. Mulder was surprised, and all Krycek had to say was, "Old habits die hard." Mulder laughed. "So, what can I do for you?" "I actually wanted to talk to you about something." Krycek said, becoming shy all of the sudden. Scully said, "I sense a man to man talk here. I'll call the Gunmen and make sure Little John hasn't been made drunk and has all the correct appendages." After Scully left, Mulder sat down, "So what is it? I seem to be helping everyone this morning." "I'm thinking of asking Jane to marry me soon. I just have never though of how to do that before. I'm generally not the marrying type." Krycek admitted. "Oh? That certainly was fast." Mulder replied. "I just don't want to mess this up. I know that if Marita finds out she'll try to kill her. You know that Marita is just as bad as I used to be." Krycek said, turning his guilt ridden eyes down, not wanting Mulder to see them. Mulder sighed. "I'm sure she'll try, but if there is one person that can prevent Marita from doing anything to Jane, it has to be you. You know how Marita thinks. While she may be not so nice, I'm sure you can handle her if need be." "I just don't know if I can. I don't want to be like I used to be." Krycek said. "I know you feel guilty for your past. I know you don't think that I have forgiven you yet. I have. You've done too much good lately to make me able to hold a grudge." Mulder said quietly. Krycek smiled, "I forgot that you can read my mind." "You really love Jane, don't you?" Mulder asked, knowing the answer already. "Yes. I really do. I would never would have met her if Doggett hadn't needed a cure. I didn't think to even get rewarded for my actions there, and I got rewarded in the end." "Sometimes that's how things go. If I were you, I'd ask her. Don't take as long as Scully and I took." Krycek laughed. "I hope not to. I just don't know how she would take me asking her. I'm sure there is someone out there that is better than me for her." "That's always the risk. You've taken many many risks and some of those worked out for you. This is one risk I'd take if I were you. It would make you happy. We all deserve happiness." Mulder said. "I suppose we all do, don't we?" Krycek smiled. "Yeah. Now go and ask her before it is too late. You don't want to miss out on this opportunity." Mulder said. "I should get something to eat soon. I haven't had breakfast yet. I wonder if Scully is making some. You're welcome to stay for breakfast if you like." "Why not. I haven't eaten yet either." When they entered the kitchen, Scully was doing three things all at once. She was talking on the phone with her mother, making breakfast, and setting the table. Mulder smiled. "Yeah Mom, I left Little John with the boys this morning. I know. He's doing fine they say. I'm a bit worried myself. What? Oh, you want to know how Mulder is doing. Good. I know that it has been a stressful year. Sam? She's okay, but she's been having some nightmares. Don't be such a mother hen. I know you think you have to make up to her for her childhood and that you're the only parent left." Mulder set a place for Krycek while Scully continued talking to her mother. Mulder asked him, "Do you think she'll tell her ever thing?" "You better hope not." Krycek said. Scully finally hung up. She said, "Mom says hi. I didn't know you were eating with us, Krycek." "I set a plate out for him, if that's alright." "It's perfectly fine." Scully said. Krycek sat down, waiting for breakfast. Scully put down three glasses of milk down, then went back to the stove to finish cooking. Scully asked, "So, what was the big man to man all about?" "I was thinking of marrying Jane." Krycek replied. "Oh? That would be a good thing. I'm sure things will work out just fine for you." Krycek said, "I hope so. I wouldn't want to get this far and then find out it was the wrong thing to be doing. It would be the perfect thing to happen for my life though." "Don't you go saying that." Scully said. She set a plate of toast and eggs in front of him. Mulder said, "So, have you thought of purchasing a ring just yet?" "Yeah. I have my eye on one. It's very expensive but I hope to be able to afford it." "It's worth it." Mulder said. "Scully wears both rings all the time." "Funny that you two still call each other by last names, did you know that?" Krycek said, a smile on his face. "Not really. It would sound funny if I started calling him Fox, and he hates that any ways. Samantha is the only privileged one with that ability." "Yeah. I don't know if I could call her Dana either. It would seem awkward and all." Mulder said. "I see. Old habits do die hard, don't they. I was just curious." "I don't see myself retraining myself on that any time soon. If people want to think it's weird they can do that all they want." Mulder said. "Besides they probably think I'm a nut job and a half already." Krycek laughed at that one. "I'm sure your neighbors wonder about you from time to time." "Yeah, there is a guy who looks at me like he's an ax murderer. Especially when he sees me hugging Sam. Must think I'm having an affair with her or something." Mulder said. "Yeah. He gawked at me the other day when I let John come over for a visit the other day. Then the Lone Gunmen showed up. Mulder was off doing something, I think paperwork at the time, and I was on my way out the door. John and I were going to go, the Gunmen taking Little John. When we walked out the door, the neighbor stared at us like he always does. We both tried saying hi, but he refused to do so. I think he thinks we all cheat on each other or something." Scully said. "Gotta love your neighbor." Krycek said. "Okay, Mr. Rogers." Mulder said. Doggett was listening to music down the hall from the bedroom in his office. He had put Samantha in the bedroom to rest. She was tired all day long, and he worried that she might upset her pregnancy. He had called into Skinner already that morning, telling him that he would need some leave for the day. He had picked up some paperwork to do, so he wouldn't be wasting the day. Besides, at home he could listen to music and not dead silence. He had it low enough to hear if Samantha had another nightmare. His choice of music would have surprised any one who knew him well enough. He had Pink Floyd going on his stereo. He might be a skeptic, but he really enjoyed all the strange music and science fiction. Pink Floyd seemed to have a calming effect on him. He really needed that today after all the upset with Samantha. It also blocked out the boredom of paper work. He couldn't help but think about Samantha for a moment before starting. She had a difficult night the night before, and he hoped that she wouldn't have a bad day to go with it. He was worried about her pregnancy, and that she wouldn't be able to make it to term. Part of the reason he had this fear was connected to his son. After the death of his son he was afraid of having children again. He feared that something would happen and he would lose another child and possibly the wife that he had with him at that time. Now that he had Samantha, he was very much afraid that this would happen again. He couldn't dream of losing her. Before he had met her life had been a little empty, too empty. Now that she was here he knew he had something to look forward to. He didn't have to wish for someone any more. He settled down into his paperwork, letting the music take over the thoughts he was having, its strange sounds and rhythms making him stop worrying. He knew it was very psychedelic in nature, but he enjoyed it none the less. Most of his former co workers had never known what he was like out of the office. Perhaps that was why he had said what he had to Scully that first day. The pulsating beat was so strange and so out of this world, and he relished in it, wishing he could turn it up, but didn't want to miss if Samantha should need something. He wondered if Mulder and Scully would check up on him, see if there was something wrong, but thought against it a moment later, they had been there that morning, shortly after he had called telling them of her nightmares. He sighed. Paper work would just have to wait. He shut the music off, leaving his office to check up on Samantha. He couldn't stop worrying about her, and since it would refuse to leave him be he decided to check things out. <"NO! Don't take my baby! Please, you promised me that my baby would be safe. Don't do this to me!!" Samantha cried. She felt Them taking her baby out of her womb in a slow painful manner. They held the dead infant above her, and she screamed. They had killed her child. She screamed, "You godawful bastards! You killed my child. You took my child from me!" She noticed that the child was a boy. "My son, you took my son from me. Why! Answer me you Black Blooded Monsters!" An ABH approached her, "We had to prevent the first earth born AHH without testing. We had to destroy it. You know that." "You told me my baby would be safe. You promised me that since I was a good test subject and that I went so willingly and did not resist you that I would keep my child. You liar!" The ABH walked away from her, leaving her to mourn her son's death alone in darkness and fear. She feared if she would survive the testing.> She woke with a start. She was crying. "Oh John, it was terrible." "Sh, it's over now." "They took our baby from me." "It was a dream. Our child is still here. See, it just kicked. It was a horrible nightmare." Doggett said softly. He held her close to himself, knowing she had dreamt something terrible. The loss of her child. He knew how that felt. She sobbed into his shoulder, whispering, "If I were to lose our baby, would you still love me?" She feared that she might lose his love if she should miss carry. "Of course I will always love you. What made you think that I wouldn't?" Doggett asked, concerned that she would think such a thing. "If I did, it would hurt you deeply, I know that you still hurt from your son before. I just don't want the same thing to happen for you now. I just think that it might make you leave me." "I wouldn't leave you for something like that. You can't control that. It's never your fault when a child does not carry to term. Unless you abuse your body, you can't expect to take blame for deaths that occur before reaching term. Samantha, don't think I would ever leave you for anything at all." Doggett whispered, kissing her forehead. She gave him a weak smile. "I guess that dream just made me so afraid. They took him from me, and told me that he had to be destroyed because of the fact he would be the first earth born AHH with no testing." Samantha said quietly. "I hope that things don't come down to that. It would be horrible for it to be that way. I want you to know though if that does happen, I will not just stop loving you because of it. You mean too much to me to make me ever do that." "I'm awake now, and I don't think I'll be sleeping much. What were you listening to any ways?" Samantha asked. "Pink Floyd, The Wall. Why?" Doggett answered. "Oh, never heard it." Samantha said. "It doesn't really fit my personality, but I like it." Doggett said a little shy. "The title suggested that. I think everyone should like what ever they like and not what ever they are expected to like." Samantha said. "Want to listen to it?" He asked, getting up from the floor. She sat up, nodding. "It's weird, I'm just warning you." He smiled at her. "Nothing can be weirder than me." Samantha said. "I don't know about that. You've seen Michael Jackson, right?" Doggett said. "Yeah, he's a black guy, big deal." "He's white now." "How do you go from black to white?" "Ask him. Let's go." Doggett said, helping her up. He led her down the hall to his office. He said, "I hope you enjoy it. It certainly does make doing paper work a lot more fun. I don't think of how boring it is then. Of course I do sing the lyrics and end up writing them down on accident from time to time. I hate that." Samantha laughed. "You do the cutest things sometimes, did you know that?" "I do? No one has ever told me that before." Doggett said. "Yes you do." "Is that a problem." "No. Should it be?" She asked, an eyebrow raised. "Guess not. I wouldn't want that to be a bad thing." "Aren't you supposed to be at work?" "Called in and asked for the day off. Thought it would be better than sitting in the office worrying about you." He touched her cheek with his hand. She said, "You shouldn't worry about me so much. I'm not a weakling." "I know you're not, but I can't help it." Doggett said, smiling at her. "I knew that, but you still shouldn't do that." "Why not? It might do you some good to have some one worry over you." He kissed her. "Don't you think?" "Yeah. Now show me this music of yours." Samantha said. Title: Resist or Die (Part Seven: A New Man) Author Cinnamon Scully Krycek left Mulder and Scully's satisfied that he had done the right thing. It was also the first time he had ever felt comfortable with them. He felt a lot better now, and he knew that Mulder wasn't about to lie to him. He was fumbling with the idea of buying a ring for Jane. He was still worried that she might leave him for someone who was better, perhaps with the correct number of arms. Yes, though he functioned quite well with only one arm he still felt like people gawked at him because of his disability. He only viewed it in this light when he knew people were staring at him. Other than that it never was a hindrance, at any time. He hoped that Mulder was right about the whole idea that Jane would want him, and that he should take his chances now. He was a little worried about Marita, but knew that in his heart that if it came down to a fight between her, he'd win. He was bigger, better trained, and held his own against almost anyone. Besides, Marita wasn't AHH. That was the only thing he feared in a fight. He knew that Jane told him often that she wouldn't love him if he wasn't the way he was. She said that the way he was appealed to her the most. He wondered if that was true, but knew that a look into her green eyes told the whole truth. She did. He knew it, but his mind refused to believe his heart. His heart already knew, now it was just convincing his analytical brain that his heart was the right one. He walked down the street after locking his car near a jewelry store. He decided to at least buy the ring for her. He could always ask then. He walked in the store, and the store owner asked, "Looking for anything particular, sir?" "Yeah, a ring. An engagement ring." "Here's our selection. I hope the lucky lady finds them beautiful." "Me too. I want this to be perfect." Krycek looked down at the different bands. Some were gold, some silver, some had diamonds and other precious gems. He saw a band of gold with a diamond surrounded by emerald stones. It made him think of her eyes. She would love it. "May I see this one?" He pointed to the ring he had been looking at. "Yes." The clerk took the ring out from under the counter. "This is a nice ring. It should make the lady you're going to ask very happy." "I hope she says yes." Krycek said. "With this ring, it makes your love I'm sure look very committed." "I know that she would like that. I'll take it." "$2000, sir." Krycek knew it might hurt his pocket book a bit. He just didn't want to wait. He wanted to get this done with so he could make her his wife. He laughed inwardly at himself. Imagine him, Alex Krycek, definitely not the marrying type. He always felt like Rhett Butler, the pirate blockcade runner from Gone With the Wind. Not a gentleman by any means. If anyone of the group was a gentleman he noticed, it had to be John Doggett. He knew that he couldn't even pretend all those things he did for any lady. It wasn't him. He took the ring box from the clerk. "Thanks." He walked back out to his car. When he arrived, an unpleasant surprise awaited him. Marita was waiting for him. "Well, well, Alex. Have you found a new woman that you think will make you forget me?" "I'm not getting into this with you. I've moved on, why can't you?" Krycek growled. "Because I know you still want me. You crave my excitement. You can't possibly be getting this with your new woman." Marita said with a sneer. "Maybe I don't want your excitement. Did you ever think that I don't want to be playing a dangerous game all the time?" Krycek said, walking closer to her. He was prepared to strike if necessary. "Oh, but you do need that danger. You'll grow bored with her, and when you do, I'll be waiting for you. You've always needed me to be around for that dangerous side." "Listen to me, and listen very very carefully, Marita: I'm over you. I've moved on, and I no longer need to be consorting with people like you or that old man. You can forget trying to get me back. I won't have it." She kissed him forcefully then. "Are you sure?" "Yes, now get lost." He was angry now. She shouldn't have kissed him like that. He did miss it in some part of himself, but he knew that Jane was right for him, and wouldn't ever use her body against him as Marita just had. "What, you don't crave more, Alex?" "No. Now get lost before I do something I'll regret." "What, sleep with me?" "No. Kill you." "Alex, you couldn't kill me if you wanted to." "Want to make a bet. Do you see this hand? I could easily wrap this one hand around your throat and squeeze the life out of you. Now get lost. I want to go home." "Fine. But we are not finished yet, Alex Krycek." Krycek sighed, getting into his car. He hated when that woman did that to him. It was her way of getting the upper hand. He had almost let her get that upper hand again, but he didn't want to risk losing Jane and become lonely all over again. "God damn that woman! Who does she think she is!" Krycek muttered to himself as he drove away, home to see Jane and ask her right away, before anything else stupid could happen. Marita followed him. She wanted to know the competition she was up against. It would make her feel good that she could take away what Krycek was valuing most. She had forgotten how his survival instincts could transfer to others as well. It was a fight she would be sorry for picking if she screwed it up at any point. When Krycek arrived home, he walked into the apartment. He said, "I'm home!" Jane came out, giving him a kiss. "Welcome home, Alex. Is there something the matter?" She noticed his unhappy look in his eyes. "It's not a big deal." Krycek said, sitting down on the couch. He wanted to ask her, but couldn't find the words just yet. "If you don't want to talk about it right now, that's fine." Jane said, sitting down next to him. He fumbled around with the ring in his pocket. He pulled the box out, waiting for the right moment to pop the question to her. He had never done that before and he was a little nervous. He noticed that she had seen what he was doing. She asked, "What are you doing, Alex?" He decided to take the plunge. "Jane, I have something to ask you. He slid off the couch, facing her on his knees. Though this felt awkward to him, he also noticed that it felt right. He opened the box, showing her the ring. "Will you marry me, Jane?" Jane was smiling at him. She had been patiently waiting for him to ask her this important question. Now he had. It made her incredibly happy. "Yes. I will marry you, Alex." She said. She watched him slide the ring on her finger. He got up, kissing her. "You've made me the happiest man alive. I was so afraid that you would refuse. I don't know what I would have done if you would have done that." She kissed him back, wrapping her arms around his neck. "I could never refuse such a sexy man like you, especially with your leather jacket on and a beautiful ring like that." He smiled devilishly at her. "I was counting on those very factors." "I'm sure you were." Krycek was worried in the back of his mind that Marita would go after Jane soon. He knew that soon this apartment wouldn't be safe for them. He wondered where he would go with her; where would the safest place be? He sat down next to her, holding her hand. "You know, this apartment might be getting too small." "Yeah. I noticed that too. It is a bit small." Jane said. She laid her head down on his shoulder, sighing. "I'm so happy right now." "I'm glad I could do something to make you happy." She smiled, snuggling up closer to him. This had been the moment she had been waiting for. It made her happy to know it had arrived. The next morning, Krycek wanted to start narrowing down his choices for his best man. Jane said she already had a maid of honor picked. She would be another abducted that she was very good friends with. Now he only had to make his choice. He went to Mulder's house, thinking maybe he could ask him, and maybe Doggett, and they could help him narrow his search down. He knew that the Lone Gunmen wouldn't accept, or they'd bicker to death, he knew that Skinner would be too awkward, so it was left up to those two. When he arrived, Mulder and Scully were having breakfast with Samantha and Doggett. The four seemed inseparable most of the time. He knocked on the back of the kitchen door. Mulder got up to let him in. "What can I do for you, Krycek?" "I need a best man. I don't know about you, but I'm running short on candidates." "Oh? Who did you have in mind?" Mulder asked. "Well, one of you two, actually. I can't pick Skinner, I don't feel comfortable with that. I also can't pick a Gunmen." "You got that part right. So, one of us?" Mulder asked. "Yeah." "Congratulations on the engagement, Krycek." Doggett said. "So, how should we do this, flip a coin, play Eenie Minne Moe, rock paper siscors?" Mulder asked. "I don't know. What ever you think would work best." Krycek said, bewildered about Mulder being such a smart ass. He was also concerned about leaving Jane behind unprotected. Scully said, "I say the man you feel most comfortable with should win." Krycek didn't know which man he was more comfortable with in all actuality. He still felt like he was on the outside, and besides, Mulder and he had such a twisted history. He also felt odd about Doggett. Samantha said, "Alright. You obviously don't feel like you are more comfortable with one or the other. I say you try to decide on how you feel it would work out with one man or the other. If you think Fox will be better, choose him, if you think that John will be better, choose him." "Hmm. That's just the problem. I don't know." Krycek said, confused now. He had never done anything like this before. "Okay, so we're back to flipping coins and the like." Mulder said. "Yeah. I guess we could just flip a coin. It might be easier than this." Krycek dug in his pocket for a coin. He found a quarter, handing it to Scully. Scully said, "What's your call, Mulder?" "Heads." Scully flipped the coin up, and it landed on the table as Mulder had called it. "Looks like you're it, Mulder." Krycek said. "Yep." "It'll give me the opportunity to make sure that Sam doesn't have anything happen any ways." Doggett said, trying to make her miffed. He was only kidding. "John! Be nice now." Samantha said, laughing. Krycek said, "Thanks. I knew that if I came here, I'd get this mess settled. I want all of us to be there. Gunmen, Skinner, the works. Let's just hope some others stay away." "Like?" Mulder asked. "Marita." Mulder said, "She's causing trouble again?" "Yeah. She's really gunning to get me back. I don't want to be like that again. I, I must admit I almost broke down and went with her yesterday. I don't know if I wouldn't have had the ring with me just then that I would have controlled myself." Krycek felt guilty about this. He knew that he shouldn't, but he did anyway. Mulder said, "She lost didn't she?" "Barely. She uses her body like a weapon. " Krycek spat. "I'm sure that since you resisted her things will be fine." "What about next time she tries to do something? What if I can't stop myself?" Krycek felt bewildered. He knew that Marita was wrong for him, and his heart knew, but he was still confused. "I'm sure you'll know what to do when the time arises, Krycek. You're a different man now." Scully said. She cleared dishes away. "I hope so." Krycek said. "I know you will." Samantha said. "You love Jane too much. I can see that here." Krycek smiled. "Yeah. I guess I do, don't I?" He got up from the stool he was sitting on. "I should be going. I don't want to leave her alone for far too long. Marita might be after her already. I should be there to protect her." He drove home. He found Jane waiting for him. "So who is it?" "Mulder. They flipped a coin." Krycek said. "Oh?" "Yep." He gave her a kiss. "So, what do you want to do today?" "Hmm, I don't know yet." "Really? You don't know what you want to do today?" He smiled suggestively at her. "I think you know what you want to do." Jane said, smiling back at him. "You bet I do." Krycek said, his smile becoming more devilish by the moment. It was one of his patented smiles that he gave her and her alone. He had never smiled at Marita that way. He still had to tell Jane about Marita, but that could wait. Later that day, Krycek watched Jane make some lunch. It was very very domestic, but he enjoyed the scene. It made him feel more at home. He thought over lunch he'd tell Jane about Marita. She set the plates of turkey sandwiches down. They sat down to eat. Krycek sighed, "Jane, I have to tell you something." "What, Alex?" "You don't know another part of my past. While I worked with the Cancer Man, I was with a woman. Her name is Marita Corrovibus. She and I were in a power struggle. Not just in the conspiracy, but in a personal way." "What became of her?" Jane asked, looking into Krycek's face. His eyes were full of guilt. "She showed up yesterday after I bought your ring. She threatened you. Not only did she do that, she used her body against me." "How?" Jane was afraid that he had done something now. "Just kissed me. It only made me think about it for a moment. I didn't want to jeopardize anything I have with you. She tried to entrap me into that game we played all the time, and I refused. Please forgive me." Krycek said, looking down. "For what, for resisting a woman who can sometimes have power over you that you don't choose to let happen to you?" Jane was upset now. "I don't want you angry with me. I told you because I thought you should know." "You let her kiss you?" Jane felt the tears well up in her eyes. "I didn't have much of a choice. Before I knew it she had kissed me." He knew he had screwed everything up. "You had plenty of choice." "You don't know Marita." She turned away from him, when he tried to talk to her face to face. He felt defeated all of the sudden. "I didn't want you to get angry with me if she were to tell you. She'd tell you much worse, and it wouldn't be the truth. I'm sorry." Jane still didn't look at him. "How could you even think to go with that vixen?" "It's a long story." "We have plenty of time. I want to hear it." "Are you sure?" "YES!" He sat back down in the chair. "A few years ago, when I was a double agent, Marita was assigned to work with me to thwart Mulder and Scully. At first we kept our distance, but soon it became this war. A power war to get Cancer Man's favor, and a sex war on the side. I never wanted it, it just happened. Seeing her yesterday did stir up some of those feelings, but when I thought of you at home, I could only feel love for you." "But you wanted to screw her, didn't you." He was caught red handed. Yes, she still had the power over him, but he had resisted her, hadn't he? "Yes. I won't lie to you. I just knew that if I did, you'd leave me. I couldn't bear for you to leave me. So I went home and proposed to you as soon as possible. I wanted it to be sealed. I want to be with you for the rest of my life." She turned a tear streaked face towards him. "Do you mean that?" "Yes, yes I do. Marita lost. You won. I couldn't love another woman, body or soul ever again. Promise me you'll stop being angry with me." Jane looked down for a moment. She said, "What if you don't resist her once." "Like Mulder and Scully and even Samantha told me, I love you too much to do that." Krycek said, softly. He had kneeled down in front of her, taking her hand into his. She looked up into his face. "You do, don't you?" "Yes. I don't want Marita, and I'm not a perfect person, but I promise you that I won't be tempted by her anymore. I might have thoughts, but I would never act on them. I'm still moving on in a lot of ways, and I know you're right for me." "I love you, Alex. I'm glad you told me." She kissed him. "That was better than the kiss she gave me yesterday. A million times better." Later on that week, Krycek and Jane were married. Krycek was afraid at first, standing waiting for the ceremony to start. It was something he had never dreamed of doing. Mulder and the maid of honor made their way down the aisle. The maid of honor was a tall, dark haired woman with sparkling green eyes. She was AHH, as she had told Samantha upon seeing her. The Gunmen and Skinner sat in the front, with Scully, Samantha, and Doggett. Skinner saw the maid of honor, and asked Samantha, "Who is the maid of honor?" "Janis Fassett. She's AHH and heads up the Resistance in Baltimore. She's tough, many place her in second place to me. She met Jane after an abduction, knowing that Jane was chosen to die. They became good good friends." Skinner watched her take her place on the bride's side of the altar. The Gunmen were gawking at the dark haired beauty. Frohike knew that he didn't have a chance with her, Langly elbowed him to get him to stop gawking. Krycek looked antsy at the altar. Mulder whispered to him, before Jane entered. "You'll do fine." He nodded, hoping he was right. Jane entered finally, and just as she stood in the door way, the sunlight streamed down on her, making her blonde hair shimmer like gold. Her dress was simple, but made her assets stand out. The train was short but not too short. She walked gracefully in it. Krycek was gawking, he knew he was, but he couldn't help it. She was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen in his entire life. She smiled brilliantly at him. The rest of the ceremony was a blur, just as it had been and will always be for all men. Before he knew it, he was allowed to kiss the bride, his bride. Now Marita didn't stand a chance. He smiled at her when the kiss was broke off. "Now, that kiss was the best kiss I've ever had." "How do you know you won't be getting more kisses like that? You never know what you can be expecting later." She raised her eye brows suggestively. "Two can play at this game." Krycek enjoyed the game with her. He knew that he would have to go to the reception, besides who could miss out on a party that would so much fun. Mulder gave him a thumbs up when they made it out of the church. Krycek was extremely happy that this had happened. He knew that he had done the right thing. Now that Jane and he were married, he hoped that Marita would stay out of it. It would make things all that much better in the end. "Shall we go to the reception?" Krycek asked. "Yes." Janis introduced to Krycek. "I see you won my best friend." Her voice was deep and rich. "Yes, looks like I have." Krycek smiled at her. Skinner merely wanted to get to the reception to introduce himself to Janis. She looked as confident as Samantha did. He wondered what she was like, and thought he could at least get to know her. Title Resist or Die (Part Eight Obstacles and Triumph Author: Cinnamon Scully They went to the reception, hoping that it would go as smoothly as the wedding had that day. Krycek really hoped so, mainly because he didn't want Jane to see him in one of his worse lights. He would get a little violent if Marita showed, he knew that he would. Skinner got the courage to introduce himself to Janis. He outstretched his hand to her, "Walter Skinner. I'm the A.D. who works with Mulder, Scully, and Doggett." "Nice to meet you." She shook his hand, her own shake firm. She said, "So, you met Samantha through her brother?" "Yes. I've known Agent Mulder for a very long time now. We've been in Samantha's Resistance for awhile now." Skinner said. "I've always wanted to meet Samantha and Fox. They are quite the legends around the Resistance. I heard about him while I was in Baltimore, and it's always been a dream to meet either one." Her melodious voice was strong and confident. "I know that Agent Mulder looked for Samantha for years, and I watched that search." "Ah." Janis didn't know what to think of Skinner. She was trying to figure out how else he was involved in the Resistance. Krycek was talking to Jane when all of the sudden the reception hall was disturbed. Marita stormed into the hall. "Alex Krycek! I think we have some unfinished business." Krycek stood up, walking towards her. "I think you're mistaken, Marita. I'm a married man now." "Married and I'm the Queen of England. You may be legally married, but you'll always be mine where it counts." Marita sneered at him. Krycek sneered back. "Don't make me do this to you." "What, show your little wife what you really are? A cheat?" "You know what I mean. I don't want to be violent." He had lowered his voice so she could only hear. "Marita leave. You don't know what could happen here." Samantha's blood boiled. She got up, ignoring Doggett's protests. "I believe you should be leaving, miss." "Who the hell are you?" Marita snapped. "Who the hell am I? I'm Samantha Mulder, that's the hell who." "You are not." "Don't make me angry." Samantha was obviously pregnant now. She made her way slowly towards Marita. "Alex Krycek, tough man being defended by a pregnant woman who is delusional." Marita laughed for a moment. It would not last long. "Listen to me carefully, Marita." She decided to go more direct. She cloaked herself, and spoke from thin air. "I'm an Alien Human Hybrid. You may not be afraid of a pregnant woman, but you will be afraid of an AHH." Marita's eyes widened. "What are you?" "Leave, before I show you what else I am capable of." She forced Marita to move towards the door by making her body disobey her mind. She protested, but eventually was pushed mentally out the door. "Don't disturb this reception again. I don't want to make you very sorry." Marita did as told. She did have information now, she could get to Cancer Man. As soon as Marita left, Samantha reappeared, and collapsed to the floor. She was panting. Doggett and Mulder ran towards her. Doggett asked, "Are you okay, Sam?" Sweat was appearing on her brow. Scully took over the situation. "Take her to a hospital now!" Doggett easily lifted his wife into his arms. He was very afraid now. If this forced her to miss carry or die he would make someone pay for it. Meanwhile, Janis and Skinner were talking in another area, away from the action. They had decided to talk to one another, away from everyone else. Skinner said, "It's been difficult these past few years. The last few months have been the most stressful." "Oh?" "Yeah. Krycek met Jane when he went on a hunch to save Doggett's life. He knew that if Doggett died of cancer that Samantha would go with him. Those two are very much in love. She was abducted and shortly after she was returned, Cancer Man decided to have Doggett taken." "That's so sad." "Yeah, she nearly lost him. I guess when Krycek went up to try his hunch out, he met her, and they shortly after fell in love. It's a tangled web. Enough about all of that, tell me something about you." Skinner said, looking at her tall form sitting not far from his. "Well, I've been abducted since I was fourteen. I was made AHH not long after my first abduction. When I returned to Earth, I ran away form the ABH guarding me and ran into a MUFON group in Baltimore. The ABH found me, making me return to the ship. That's where I met Jane." Janis's voice was thick with emotion, but she had strength like steel behind her pain. "I'm sorry." "Don't be. It's the way things are. I can't change them, and neither can you. I make the best of what I have." Janis smiled a brilliant smile at him. Skinner could see that she was not a weakling by any means. He was sure that if need be she could make any man very afraid of her with only a steely gaze. He said, "So, what happened when you returned to Earth?" "We went back to that MUFON group and they tried to hide us as best as they could. She was dying, and I was so very close to her, she's like a sister to me." "I can see that." He inched closer to her. She noticed, but didn't seem to mind it. "Watching Jane slowly die and recuperate time and time again nearly broke my heart, but I gathered strength to fight for her." Janis said. She didn't want Skinner to see any weaknesses in her. He silently took her hand. "You don't have to hide how hard this is. Scully went through the same thing, and I watched with Mulder as she nearly died from cancer. It's okay to be a bit upset, it's not an easy topic." "Yeah, it's not." She didn't pull back her hand from his, in fact she seemed to welcome its touch. She looked into his face, her green eyes catching the dim light like a cat's. "Would you like to go to dinner with me some night?" Skinner asked suddenly. He thought it would be perfect. Better than being at some one's wedding reception. "I would like that very much." Janis said. She smiled, and Skinner knew he was lost all of the sudden. This woman could sure stand through anything she wanted to. His phone rang loudly in the empty hall. "Excuse me, I must take this." He stood up, answering it. "Skinner." He heard Mulder say in the phone, "Skin Man, we have a problem. Where are you and Janis any ways?" "What's the problem, Mulder?" "Samantha. We're taking her to the hospital. Marita upset her when she showed up and Sam over exerted herself." "I'm on my way." He hung up. Janis watched him sigh, pocketing his phone. He looked guilty for a moment. "What's wrong?" "Samantha. She's on her way to the hospital." "For what? What's the matter?" "She's pregnant, and she over exerted herself. I figure she used some AHH tricks to scare Marita, the woman who is in pursuit of Krycek. She takes so much responsibility for all of her Resistors." "She doesn't seem to be the only one who tends to think they are responsible for those below them." She smiled at him. "We should get down there." When they got to the hospital, Doggett allowed the doctors to take Samantha from him. They took her to the ER right away, to check her out. Doggett watched with fear in his eyes. Krycek and Jane stood behind him, still dressed for their wedding. They watched him grow worrisome. Mulder said behind them, "She should be fine, she just happened to over extend her energy. I don't think she's ever been pregnant while trying to exert any power like she did. They give her some rest and she should be fine." Jane saw Skinner and Janis arrive. She said, "Janis, it was terrible." Janis hugged Jane, trying to calm her down. She then handed Jane over to Krycek. "Alright, until Samantha is back on her feet, I'd like to ask Mulder here if I can take command for a bit." "Sure. I should keep Doggett from going over the edge from worry any ways." "Good. Now, I want the wedding couple to go home and change. Avoid the woman who caused this. Come back here once you've done that. I'm going to have to see if her baby is okay myself. I don't trust doctors, especially if they find out her identity and what that baby is." Doggett turned around. "What do you mean what the baby is." He said it in a tight voice. "That child is the first AHH born with out testing. If those doctors know what she is, and are in any way connected to the conspiracy, they will kill it." "Her dream. Oh God. I have to get in there." Doggett was upset now. "John, what dream?" Scully asked. "Sam, she dreamt that They would take her baby." Doggett said. Janis said, "We don't have much time. Scully, Doggett, do you have your weapons handy?" "Yes." They both responded. "Mulder, you and I are going in there to see what they are up to. If they are up to something bad, we'll send out a thought to you." Skinner watched her take over in fascination. She was in command now. They wouldn't need that signal. Samantha screamed, "JOHN! DON'T TAKE MY BABY, NO!" Doggett didn't wait, he had his gun drawn and he flew through the door. He wasn't about to let some stupid doctors take his child. He was not about to let a second child go without a fight. Doggett rushed just in time. He shouted, "F.B.I.! What the hell are you doin' to my wife!" The doctors looked up in surprise. They were about to do what they had been ordered to do. They were going to cause her to have an abortion. She screamed, fearing the worse. Doggett slammed one doctor to the floor. Rage had taken over his body now, and he was ready to explode on anyone who got in his way. He had his gun drawn, ready to fire at anytime. Another doctor tried to subdue him and he easily punched that guy. Mulder had finally rushed in, helping him take a few more of the doctors out. Once Doggett had gotten the doctors away from Samantha, he helped her up from the table. The doctor he had slammed down to the floor got up, trying to stop him. He took the butt of his gun, slamming it in to the man's nose. He lifted Samantha up off the bed, carrying her, while hoping Mulder would stop any attack from his rear. He walked back out, holding Samantha. Scully took his gun from him. Scully said, "Take her to the car. I'll look at her myself. Obviously we can't trust the hospitals anymore. I'm so sorry this happened." Doggett sighed. "You got that right." He carried the limp Samantha to the car waiting in the back. He was very very angry about this whole ordeal. It shouldn't have happened that way. He placed her down gently in the back seat, himself getting in with her. He leaned her up against his shoulder, so that she wouldn't fall. He didn't want her to get worse off than she already was. He looked down at Samantha, touching her face with the back of his hand, to see if she was conscious and to see if she ran a fever. She was hot, fever alright, but not awake. Scully climbed into the drivers seat. "Mulder said he'll get home with Krycek. I'll take her to your place." Doggett nodded. He put his arm around her, holding her close. He glared out the window, knowing that the hospital had just tried to kill his child. It made him very very angry. Scully noticed his sour mood from the back of the seat. "John, she's going to need medical attention some way. We need to do something, or she might miss carry any ways. I don't know what else to tell you." "I know. That hospital tried to make her miss carry anyway." Doggett said, softly. He didn't want to wake Samantha. "I'll give her a check over when we get to your place. I suggest she gets plenty of rest. She wore herself out when Marita showed up." Scully said. "What was she thinking anyway?" Doggett said. "Samantha? That she should protect the man who had saved your life. Marita? That she should do whatever she could to get Krycek back." Scully replied. "I wish Samantha would have let anyone else deal with that situation." "I know. Let's just get her home." Scully said. When they arrived at home, Doggett carried Samantha up the stairs. He put her in the bed, and Scully came in to check on her. Scully said, "She's exhausted, other than that she's fine. So's the little one. I say we let her sleep the night and check up on her in the morning." "Sounds good. Thanks for helpin' out." Doggett said. "Not a problem. Just keep her safe and things should be fine. I'm going to do a back ground check of all hospitals in the area. We should make sure when it's time for the baby to make his or her appearance she's in good hands." Scully said. "Good idea." Doggett said. He hugged Scully in thanks before she left. Scully smiled at him. "Remember to keep her safe." Scully left. Doggett crawled into the bed next to Samantha. He wrapped his arms around her, hoping it would make her feel safer. He whispered, "It's okay, Sam. I'm here, and nothing is going to hurt you now." He heard her sigh contentedly. It made him feel relieved. He slowly fell asleep, listening to her even breaths in sleep. He snuggled up to her, becoming almost as a blanket to her form. Samantha woke for a moment, hearing his soft snores. It comforted her to hear them. She rolled over, facing him now. She snuggled into his chest, promptly falling back to sleep. Mulder came to check up on them, now on guard duty on the first shift. He and Scully would alternate. Little John was staying at the Gunmen's. He peeked into the room, seeing them fast asleep. It made him smile. He closed the door. Scully asked quietly, preparing to sleep on the sofa, "How they doing?" "Spooned up like baby cats, Scully, spooned up like baby cats." Mulder said with a smile. He saw Scully roll her eyes at his comment. "What? Did I say something wrong?" "No Mulder. You just will never grow up, that's all." Mulder put his pouty face on. He said, "What if I did?" "Then you wouldn't be you." Scully said. She motioned him over. "Give me a good night kiss before I go to sleep." Mulder obliged her by doing so. He smiled, "Too bad I can't give you more than that, Scully." Scully hit his arm. "Get your mind out of the gutter." "Never, Scully, never." Mulder said with a smile. He sat on his watch, while Scully drifted off to sleep. Meanwhile, Krycek and Jane met Janis and Skinner back at the hospital parking lot. Janis told them what had happened. She said, "I think you two ought to shack up some where else for the night." "I think so too. Marita is up to something dangerous." "Hmm, you'll want to be alone, I know that. You drive to my place in D.C. This Marita never even saw me. I'll go home with Walter here. It seems logical to me." Janis said, eying the newly weds. Krycek gave her his patented devilish smile. "Why thank you for the generous offer, Miss Fassett." "Not a problem. I don't seem to have a problem with the whole idea myself." Janis said. Skinner felt embarrassed suddenly. He saw Jane and Krycek climb into an unmarked car. He refused to drive in a "Just Married" car. He said, "Directions?" "Here, follow these. I wrote them up before you showed up." Janis said, handing them to Krycek. Krycek nodded his thanks, pulling away. Skinner said, "So, you're staying with me for the night." "We're both adults, Walter. Don't be foolish." Janis said, though a smile crossed her lips. She was enticed by him none the less. She wasn't sure if she should let him in on that just yet. She climbed into the passenger seat of his car. Skinner sighed. He got into the driver's seat, pulling away, heading home. He wondered what would happen while he was with Janis tonight. Probably nothing but sleep. When he arrived home, Skinner opened his apartment, letting Janis in before him. She shrugged her coat off, hanging it up. She looked around his apartment, approving of what she saw. He was neat, but not overly neat. Skinner watched as she sat down on the sofa in his living room. She let out a sigh. "This is a comfortable couch. It has been a long day, hasn't it?" "Yes, I'd agree with you there. I hope Samantha is fine now." "With that gentleman to watch her like a hawk? I wouldn't worry. Doggett will keep her safe. He does have a temper, doesn't he?" "Only if you cross him, it seems. Or rather if you mess with those he loves." Skinner said. He hung up his trench coat next to her small jacket. He decided to take the plunge and sit down next to her. It was his apartment after all. Why the hell shouldn't he be able to sit on his own sofa in his own apartment. She opened her eye, and she looked almost feminine. He could only think of Scarlett O'hara. The same features marked her face, but she looked more compassionate than Scarlett ever had. She had that back bone that Scarlett was known for, though. That back bone appealed most to him. She said, "So, what would you like to do now?" He wondered what he should say. He knew that he could be entering dangerous ground with his answer. He kept himself under control, answering, "What ever you want to do." "You're lying." So she was like Samantha. She could tell you what you were thinking, too. He wondered what he should tell her. "It's partly true." "Yes, yes it is. You don't want to offend me, do you?" She asked it, sitting forward, her dark hair framing her crystal green eyes and her plump pink lips. "I don't want to offend you." Skinner was a little lost, simply because he didn't know what she would want from him. "How about a kiss? You obviously would like to give me one." She titled her head, waiting for his answer. "Would you really want that?" Skinner asked. He had just met this woman, but it wasn't odd for him to kiss a woman he had just met. "Yes. I would like that very much." She said. Her eyes caught the light like a cat's again. He was reminded of how much she was like a cat again. He leaned in closer, after he moved down the couch closer to her. He kissed her, slowly at first. He was sure that if he didn't do this right she would get up and leave. She deepened the kiss instead. "You're not that bad, did you know that?" Skinner could only smile, before kissing her again. When Krycek finally found Janis's place, he lead her up to the door. "This is the place, I'd guess." He smiled at her. They entered the neat apartment. He said, "Sit on the couch." She did as told. As soon as he locked the door, he sat down next to her. He said in Russian, "Ya vas lyublyu. It means I love you." She was surprised. "What language did you just speak?" "Russian. I lived there for awhile as a little boy, but I don't speak it very often, except when I'm usually angry or, well like now." She didn't know what think. "Wow. I don't know any other languages. I guess that's okay." "Yeah. It's perfectly fine. Not a problem. I just thought I'd share that with you. You know, let you hear Russian." "I feel like I'm Jane Bond here." He laughed then. "Perhaps you do. Is that a bad thing?" "Yes and no." "Why no?" "I don't have that suave nature Bond does. I can't just twist anyone around my finger to get them to sleep with me." "Who said suavity was everything?" He smiled at her. "Just be you. It would be better than if you were like someone else. "Really?" "Definitely." He kissed her. She put her hands on his sides, while he put his hand up to her neck, caressing it as he kissed her. "I think more so. I wouldn't be here right now if you hadn't been the way you are." "That's a comfort. I'm sure Marita would have tried. . ." "Sh, don't mention that woman. Tonight is about us." He smiled into her face, leaning in for another kiss. "You're all I want to think about tonight." Jane smiled back at him when he broke off the kiss. "That's a comforting thought. I only want to think of you tonight, too. Just think, we're husband and wife now." "Yes. That's what makes it so exciting, don't you think?" He said, kissing her neck suddenly. He smiled at her again. He wanted to see her reaction to his move. She said, "Yes. That is the exciting part. I just hope you don't get bored with me after awhile." "I could never get bored with you. I want you to know that. Each day I learn something new about you anyway, don't I? I'm going to try to, at least." Krycek kissed her again, moving down to her neck again. "I hope you accomplish that goal, too." Jane said, gasping suddenly. "I will, I guarantee that." The next morning dawned bright and early. Doggett was still asleep when Scully came into check up on Samantha. His soft snores seemed to be coming from her hair, as she had rolled over in her sleep during the night. Scully smiled. She approached slowly, not wanting to wake them, or startle them for that matter. Some how during the night he had managed to pull a blanket over both of them. She hoped that things would be okay, and that they would stay this peaceful. She tapped Doggett on the shoulder first, waking him. "John, I need to see Samantha, see if she's doing okay." He lifted his head, groggy from sleep. "Alright. I'll wake her." His eyes were still clouded with sleep, and a large yawn escaped him. He touched Samantha's shoulder lightly, tapping her. Samantha woke, rolling over to face him. Scully said, "Samantha, let me see you for a moment, will you?" Samantha turned her head back to face Scully. "Sure." Scully checked her over, looking to see if there was any blood, indicating a miscarriage. She found none. Then she checked for a fever, finding none. She said, "Things seem to be fine. You just over exerted yourself last night. I say you just rest until your due date, that way your baby survives, alright?" Samantha yawned. "Yes, Dr. Scully." Scully smiled. Brother like sister. Both Mulders would always respond that way. She shook her head. "Get some more sleep. I'm sure Mulder will wake and make breakfast a little later. You don't have to be up any ways." Samantha smiled. She said, "Thank you." Scully exited the room, leaving an already dozing off Doggett and a happy Samantha behind. Samantha snuggled up to Doggett, sighing. He opened one eye, asking, "What's the matter?" "Nothing. I'm just happy." "Oh." He was asleep before she could say anything else. She wondered if she was the one who was exhausted, if he was the one and Scully had it wrong. He was being cute, she admitted. She fell asleep, listening to his even breathing. Skinner woke alone in his bedroom the next morning. He had decided to let Janis take the couch, after an argument about who would sleep where. If it had been up to him. . . He wouldn't think of that now. Rather, he would think of going out to eat, take her out to breakfast. He got dressed, exiting his bedroom to see her up watching the morning news. "Good. We came off clean, Walter." Janis said, not even turning around to look at him. "What do you mean?" "Doggett's Rampage, as I'd like to call it, didn't make the local news. We're in luck there." "That's good. Would you like to go to breakfast with me?" "Sure." Skinner grabbed his coat and waited for her to put her's on. She smiled at him. "Let's go." Skinner thought about the kiss they had shared the night before. He wondered if it would happen again, or if he should just give up on the whole thing now. "Give up on what?" Janis said with a smile. She knew what he was thinking. "Don't go reading other people's minds. It's sort of rude." Skinner said, trying to be angry. It didn't work. "I can't help that you're thinking too loudly." Janis said. "Besides, I wouldn't give up just yet any ways. You never know what surprised could be in store for you." Skinner had to smile at that one. They walked out to the car parked in the lot by his building. He let her get in, and he pulled away to go to the restaurant. When they arrived, Skinner said, "Well, let's go in. I'm absolutely famished." "Me too." When they got inside, they were seated. Skinner asked her, "So, do you think we should check up on Samantha?" "I think so, but if anything new would have come up, I think they might have told us by now." Janis said, her green eyes pinning him. He nodded, looking at his menu, trying to decide what he wanted for breakfast. He finally decided upon having the steak and eggs meal. Janis selected an omelette with a side of pancakes. She said, "Walter, you're avoiding a subject again." "Oh?" He wanted to sound more confident than he felt. He knew that she was pretty and strong, but he didn't know if she liked him the way he obviously liked her. "You know the topic I'm talking about." Janis said. "You mean the kiss we had last night?" He jumped right in for the kill. "Yes. That is what I'm talking about." Janis said. "What about it?" "How about later we try that again? Like I said, don't give up just yet." Janis looked at him with sparkling green eyes. He smiled back at her. "Fine, I won't then. I don't think I can just give up that easily." "Good. I wouldn't want you to." She smiled at him, waiting for her food to arrive. The Lone Gunmen decided they would stop by to see if Samantha was alright, and reunite Little John with his parents. They bickered the entire way, and when they arrived, Langly was already crabby. Frohike knocked on the door, Scully answering. "Why hello Agent Scully." Frohike put on his best smile. Scully rolled her eyes. "Come on in. Be quiet. They are still asleep upstairs. The Gunmen entered the house, going to the kitchen. They sat down at the table, where Mulder sat, drinking coffee trying to stay awake, but looked as if he was not succeeding very well. Frohike clapped him on the back, and Mulder glared at him. Langly said, "Good one, Dohike. Make him even more crabby." "What do you three want?" Mulder said, his voice tired. "We brought Little John back. Thought you might want him around." "Thanks." Mulder never made it to sleep. He stayed up with Scully on her watch, unable to sleep. Now he felt like he could sleep forever. He was ready to drop. Suddenly the phone rang, making Mulder jump. He answered it, "Doggett's Residence." Krycek asked, "How's Samantha, Mulder?" "Sleeping like I should be." "You sound tired." "Didn't sleep last night." "Someone show up?" "No." "Is Doggett awake?" "No, he and Samantha are sleeping still. Scully said that she wondered if she was looking over the right person. Doggett looked positively exhausted, or he was just being lazy." "I'll take the second part over the first any day. Jane and I were going to stop by later on, if that was alright." "It should be fine." "Go to bed, Mulder. I'm sure Scully will tell you the same thing." "Alright, mother hen." Mulder hung up, looking at the Gunmen standing there for a moment. "Sit down or something. You're creeping me out standing there like that." Scully came in. "Mulder, go to that couch and sleep now." Mulder smiled weakly at her. He said, "Alright, I'm going. I don't want you three to be bickering, do you hear me. I want to sleep." The Gunmen nodded. Mulder got up from the table, giving Scully a quick kiss as he went by. He climbed onto the sofa, literally collapsing onto it, asleep as soon as he was laid down. Just as he fell asleep, Doggett and Samantha made their way down the stairs. Samantha made sure that Doggett was quiet. She said, "Fox is sleeping. Let's be quiet." Doggett nodded. He saw Mulder's arm hanging over the edge, and his long form in a comfortable position he knew he couldn't have found while he tried to sleep on the thing. They entered the kitchen, finding the Gunmen there. Doggett said softly, "When did you three arrive?" "Just before you two lazy people got up." Frohike said. Marita was speaking with the Cancer Man. "That stupid Alex left me for another woman." Cancer Man looked amused by her tirade. He emitted a puff of smoke, saying, "You know, I have a plan to get Samantha Mulder back. I need her to make the perfect AHH. I can get Krycek too, if you would like." Marita turned around. "You mean that witch that told me to get lost at Alex's wedding reception. Is that what she is, for real? She said she was." "Yes. The plan I have will stretch your patience level, but you can handle it for the sweet honey it will bring, can't you?" Cancer Man let another puff of smoke go. "What is your plan?" "The ABH I have says that we can get a hold of Samantha Mulder in a few years. He can make something happen. She'll make a mistake. We get them the Earth born AHH with out testing, and they'll give us what we want." "Why the time lapse?" "He said something about how if they didn't do things that way, they would end up losing their best test subject ever. That would be Samantha Mulder, I'm assuming." "I see. So, we wait a few years. She thinks things are okay, we abduct the kid, and she follows right into the trap we've set for her. I like it. Now, how do we throw Alex into the mess?" "He'll try to help her find her child. You know that he will. He'll step up saying he knows the most about us, and he'll come to get the child, before she can get upset." "I see." Marita said. She narrowed her eyes. "This had better work, old man, or so help me God. I will kill you for the failure." "So much like Alex. You won't kill me anymore than he could. He threatened me much the same way you just did, and it never went anywhere." "I'm different, old man. I don't need you like he did. Like I am his weakness, so are you." Marita said, glaring at the Cancer Man. "We'll see about that. I think you have a lot of promise, as long as you keep yourself under control." Cancer Man said, walking swiftly away. He didn't want to hear any more crazy plots from the woman. A couple of months later, it happened. Samantha woke one morning, early. "John, it's time." Doggett woke, quickly. He asked excitedly, "Are you sure?" "Most definitely." She heaved as a contraction hit her. "I have to get to the hospital now!" She let a scream go, and bit her lip. Doggett got up, dressing quickly. He helped Samantha up from the bed. She pulled all of her instincts that she had from the testing to mind. She would no longer feel any pain. They made it to the car, and Doggett got in, speeding down the street. He asked, "Are you alright?" "I'm fine, John. Just hurry." Doggett pulled into the hospital, yelling at personnel. "My wife is in labor! Get a doctor now!" The nurses disbanded like a flock of birds, going off into different directions. Doggett helped her along until a nurse brought a gurney to place her onto it. Doggett had remembered his cell phone. As the wheeled Samantha away, and as he ran along side of her, he called Mulder and Scully to tell them the news. "Samantha's going to have the baby now!" Mulder asked, "We'll be right down. I know Scully wants to make sure the hospital is still safe. Stay with her." "I will." He hung up, getting into scrubs. He stood by Samantha and she squeezed his hand from time to time. It wasn't too bad and her eyes were clouded, with what he thought for a moment looked like Black Oil. He assumed she used it to block pain. Mulder and Scully rushed to the hospital, standing outside. Mulder was anxious. Scully was happy. They went inside, scrubbing up. Samantha was quiet, and Scully said, "What's wrong?" Doggett said, "It's an AHH thing, I'm guessing." Scully nodded. She watched the doctors deliver the easy birth. A son was suddenly held up for all to see. Doggett saw the film quickly slide from Samantha's eyes. She smiled up at him. "The first Earth born AHH to be born to an AHH mother." He smiled back at her, holding her hand. She asked, "Can I see my baby?" The doctors finished cleaning up the infant. They handed the baby to Samantha. The doctors would not remember any part of the way Samantha was during the birth. She had already made up new memories for them. She looked into her son's tiny face. She said, "Why hello there, Andrew John Doggett." The baby opened his new born eyes, and looked up to his mother. He did the extraordinary then. Samantha looked up into Doggett's shocked face. He had heard his son think to Samantha. Samantha handed the child to Doggett. Doggett looked into his son's face. He noticed right away the intelligence. He was still shaken by the fact that his son could telepathically speak already. Samantha said, "He was born that way. I figure he was watching us all that time, learning the language, knowing his telepathic communication would be all he had for awhile." Doggett smiled at her. "Well, if anything, he's got my eyes and my nose." He turned to Mulder and Scully. "Meet Andrew John Doggett." His face was of pure fatherhood. Scully could only smile at him with his new son. Author Notes: The characters of Jane and Janis are mine and mine alone. I created them because they were necessary for the story to continue on. I hope you enjoyed this story. I know that it has been a lot of work, not only for me, but for you, the reader. Thanks for reading this story
