"Hey, Scully. It's me," came the voice from the other end of the phone.
"Oh, hi, Mulder. I was just about to call you. How was your date," the word
fell from her mouth. She still couldn't believe he had a date.
"Wonderful. This woman, Scully, she's amazing."
"What's her name again?" asked Scully. She knew the woman's name, but
was stalling. She didn't want to hear about the amazing date.
"Sara Keller. But she prefers to be called Jade."
"Like that skin flick? The one with-"
"Well, no. She's been called Jade since she was six. She has really clear
green eyes."
"Ah," said Scully. She sat on her couch. Mulder was sitting on his, looking
at his fish as he talked to her.
"Anyway, we went to Chez Poitier. It was really nice. We talked and I found
out she's a doctor, just like you!"
Scully let out a little sound from the back of her throat. "Imagine that,
Mulder," she said sarcastically. Lately she had been getting very close to
Mulder. After the Eddie Van Blundht case, she had almost told him why she
was about to kiss the man she thought was Mulder. But apparently Mulder
didn't share her sentiments. He had accepted a date with "Jade" just a week
after that case.
        "Scully, are you jealous?"
"No. Well, I'm jealous that you have a social life and I don't," she said,
covering. Yes, of course she was jealous. He could be so dense sometimes.
"Well, Jade has a friend. An ex-boyfriend really-"
"No, Mulder. No blind dates. I will not allow you to set me up with anyone.
You have *bad* taste."
He sounded wounded, "Bad taste, Scully?"
"Uh, Phoebe Green. Need I remind you that you were involved with a
woman named Bambi."
"Scully, it's not my taste. It's hers. Jade is great, and I really want you to
meet her. Please? For me? This guy- his name is Jon- can come you me and
Jade to a restaurant. Please?"
Just what she wanted to see. "Jade" fondling Mulder while she ate next to
some loser. But she could just see his face. Those stupid puppy-dog eyes. She
sighed and agreed. She would go out with Jon on Saturday night (today was
Friday) and would be nice to Jade.
********
Saturday night came way to quickly. She was supposed to meet Mulder and
Jade and Jon at a large restaurant called "Traveler's" It was fancy, and
expensive, so she dressed up. Instead of a suit, she wore a small black cocktail
dress. Instead of wearing her hair down, she wore it up. Instead of very
little makeup she wore eye liner, full lipstick and lots of mascara. Afterall,
this WAS her first date since Ed Jerse. She shuddered. Yuck, Ed Jerse. She
had spent the night at his house, although she never slept with him, and
later learned she had been sleeping not twenty feet away from a killer. A
killer with a talking tattoo, no less.
As she drove the restaurant she tried to picture Jon. Maybe he was
troll-like. Or had some hideous disfigurement. She stopped when she saw the
man Mulder was standing with. As tall as Mulder with dark hair and dark
eyes. He was muscular and very, very cute. He had a boyish quality about
him. He almost looked....mischievous. She got out of her car, letting the valet
park it shook his hand.
"Hello, you must be Dana," he said.
        "Yes. Jon?"
        "Yes."
"Hey, Scully," said Mulder leaning over to plant a quick kiss on her cheek.
Out from behind a large pillar stepped a woman with long, black hair and
bright green eyes. She was very tall, and very voluptuous. Making her
grand entrance, thought Scully.
"Hello, Dana," she said. Scully extended her hand but Jade declined. Instead
she leaned over and kissed Scully's right cheek and then her left. "Come,
come," she said, "I've heard so much about you that a simple handshake
wouldn't do. I'm sure you've heard a lot about me from Fox."
"Well, actually, I haven't. Mulder told me how you got your nickname."
"Oh," she said her eyes narrowing, "Is that all he told you?"
"Well..." started Scully, but Jon interrupted them.
"Shall we go in?" he asked.
"Good idea," said Scully, taking the arm he offered. Jade grabbed Mulder's
arm after he didn't offer it.
********
After everyone had ordered, the conversation began to flow. Both Jon and
Jade noticed the fact that the partners were throwing looks at each other all
night. Almost communicating without words. They talked of the cases that
Scully and Mulder had been involved in.
        "Scully, remember Flukie?"
Scully gagged on the bread she was eating, "Yuck. How could I forget?" she
shuddered. Then she remembered Jon and Jade. "Flukie, as Mulder calls him
was one of our more disgusting cases. It was a giant fluke worm that lived
on...sewage," she explained. "Can we please keep this conversation
dinner-appropriate, Mulder?"
"Oh, you're no fun. How about that time you ate a bug?" he laughed.
"I didn't really eat it, I told you. Slight of hand."
"I think you ate it," he said, his eyes dancing.
"Did not!" she exclaimed. Jade and Jon continued to remain puzzled. Scully
shook herself. "So, Jon ,what do you do?"
"I'm a computer programmer for IBM."
"Oh, that must be very interesting work. I guess you're able to stay on top
of technology," she said. The mention of top technology made her think of
the Lone Gunmen. Mulder thought the same thing and threw her another
look. They laughed. Jade stood up.
"Dana, darling, could you come with me, please? Fox," she ordered, "Order
me another glass of wine."
"Uh, sure. Where are we going?"
"To the bathroom. So we can have a little girl-talk," she said, and turned on
her spike heels. Jade was wearing a red dress that set off her eyes and hair.
Her hair was a wondered. Scully couldn't figure out how she managed to
keep it so strait and clean. It was almost down to her waist. They walked to
the bathroom in the back. Scully's first impression of Jade was that she was
nice, just quiet. Although there was an iciness in her demeanor. Something
Scully couldn't quite put her finger on.
As they entered the bathroom, Jade looked around and when she realized
they were alone she pinned Scully up against the wall.
"He's mine, damn you. So you better watch out because I'm willing to fight
for him." She pulled Scully's hair. Scully didn't like that. She took Jade's
wrist and yanked it hard.
"No one pins me," she whispered fiercely. "Mulder and I are not involved,
just to clear the record. But I think he's better than a bitch like you."
Jade pulled harder on Scully's hair. "I have a mission. He will be mine. And
there's nothing you can do to stop it, bitch. So you'd better not try. Because I
has a little secret weapon," she growled and pulled out a knife, shoving it in
Scully's face. Then she pushed Scully harder against the wall. Scully
followed her out the door.
When they reached the table, the food had already come, but Dana had had
enough. She excused herself and said she was leaving. She kissed Mulder on
the cheek goodbye, all the while watching Jade's eyes narrow. Then she got
in her car and drove back. She was just about to go home when she decided
she needed a favor. She mustered up all her courage and dialed the number.
"Lone Gunmen," said the voice on the other end.
"Hello, Langly. I need your help," she said. "You guys work late." It was
nine o'clock.
"Well, the government never sleeps Scully. What can I help you with."
"I'm checking up on someone. I need files or anything you can locate on a
woman named Sara Keller. She's also known as Jade."
"Why? Isn't that the woman Mulder's dating?"
"Yes. She threatened me with a knife. I think she's using Mulder. She
thought I would get in the way."
"Oh. We'll get back to you," he said. There was some commotion and then
she heard Langly say, "Give the phone back to me." Then another gruffer
voice came on.
"Hello, Agent Scully. I'm sure you look lovely. What are you wearing?"
asked the new one.
"Frohike, there are 900 numbers for that. Call me if you find anything," she
said and hung up. She turned on the TV and waited for them to call back.
********
"Hello?" Scully said, picking up the phone.
"Scully, it's me. Why did you leave so quickly?" she looked at the clock. It
was eleven.
"Jade threatened me," she said simply. "I'm researching her. I think she's
involved with THEM," she stated, putting emphasis on the last word. Mulder
became livid.
"What the hell, Scully! Who the fuck gave you permission to research MY
girlfriends?"
"Well, who the fuck gave her permission to pull a knife on me?"
"She pulled a knife on you?"
        "Yes!" she yelled.
"I don't believe you," he growled. Her phone clicked, she had another call.
"Doesn't matter. I have another call." She hung up with Mulder and talked
to the Gunmen. Thankfully, it was Langly and not Frohike who had called
her.
"God, Scully, you won't believe this. A woman who fits the description of
Sara Keller and is known as Agent Jade Skeller works for the CIA. Not only
that, she is one of the top level executives at the pentagon. Who is this
woman?"
Scully breathed. She had to get this information to Mulder. She knew he
would demand proof. "Do you have a picture of Agent Jade Skeller?"
"Yup. You can pick it up tomorrow."
"Great. I'll be over first thing," she said.
        "We'll be here."
        "Do you ever sleep?"
"We will only rest when the insidious conspiracies and government plots
cease. Then, and only then will we rest. And when the beer starts to kick
in."
"Right, Langly. See you tomorrow." She hung up. She went into her
bedroom and tried to sleep. But she haunted by images of Mulder being
trapped or hurt. She finally fell asleep, but her sleep was still racked with
those images. She feared that since Jade was working with the Cigarette Man
and that she was another trap for Mulder, like when he was assigned to work
with Agent Krychek.
********
Mulder stared at the phone. Had Scully just hung up on him? She had! She
had hung up on him! He was angry with her, but not because she had hung
up on him. He was angry because she had researched his girlfriend! What
was that crap about Jade being part of the Consortium? She was one of the
kindest most gentle people he knew. Except for Scully, she had the biggest
heart in the world. And Scully was quickly moving down on his list. He was
just thinking how wonderful jade was when she knocked on the door.
"Hello, Jade. I was just thinking about you," he said, opening the door. She
had changed to tight jeans and a white tee shirt. How did she know that was
what turned him on?
"Were you?" she asked, raising one eyebrow. He sat next to her on his
couch. She leaned in close, "Were they nasty thoughts, Fox?"
He cringed, "Do you *have* to call me that? Can't you call me Mulder?"
"No. I want to get very personal with you, Fox. What's more personal than a
first name?" she purred. "You can even call me Sara, if you want."
"No. I'll call you Jade. I like it better," he said. She was in the process of
crawling all over him. She kissed him hard, and he kissed back, unable to
resist her. And yet something troubled him. Maybe it was the fact that
Scully didn't like her. He couldn't believe that Jade attacked Scully. He just
couldn't. But what reason would Scully have to lie to him? He could always
tell when she lied, and he hadn't detected any dishonesty in her voice.
Maybe she wanted him. They had been growing closer lately but....Scully
wasn't that underhanded. She would have just come out and told him. She
wouldn't have tried to sabotage a relationship. So he pushed Jade off him,
just as she was unzipping his pants.
"What?" she asked, stroking his face.
"I can't not tonight," he said, pulling away from her. He put his shirt back
on.
She cocked her head. "Why not?"
"Scully and I have to work tomorrow. Some papers and stuff. I have to be at
her place early," he lied. He was a good liar, though. So she nodded.
        "How early?"
"Uh, seven in the morning. She has to eat at her mother's in the afternoon,
so we have to get it done. I'm sorry. But I promise you dinner at my place
tomorrow night. I'll even cook," he said. She smiled a cool smile and nodded.
"Okay. I'll see you tomorrow around seven?"
"Okay. Seven." He was going to have to do some serious thinking before
then. He led her back to his door. Then he received the surprise of his life.
She punched him, hard, across the face. He put a hand to his now-bleeding
nose.
        "Wha-"
"We could have done this the easy way, Fox," she said. Then she took out a
gun. "This weapon is pointed at your temple. If you so much as breathe
funny I am prepared to fire. Okay?"
"Okay," he croaked out. His nose hurt. She might have broken it.
"Give me your cell phone. Don't want you making any calls," she said,
holding out her hand. "And your gun. And anything else that might be used
as a weapon." He gave her the things she requested.
"But I don't know what else could be a weapon." She hit him in the crotch.
He was already on the ground, but the pain surging through his most
sensitive parts made him almost lay down.
"I told you. We can do this the harder way."
        "I really don't know."
She sighed. Then she took out a heavily saturated rag. "Now I'll have to call
my associates to drag your body from here." She bent over and placed the
chloroform soaked rag on his face. He was out in an instant, but not before
he heard her tell someone to come up and help her with "the body".
********
Scully awoke from a terrible dream. She couldn't remember what it was
about, only that Mulder was in pain and she couldn't stop it. She was
drenched in sweat and breathing hard. She picked up the phone and
punched his number. It rang. And rang.
"Hi this is Fox Mulder. Leave your number and I'll get back to you," said his
voice. She left a message.
"Mulder! Pick up. Damn you, Mulder, where are you? Come on, pick up!"
She hung up and got dressed.
She drove as fast as she could. But it wasn't fast enough. She got there and
found Mulder no where in sight. Not only that, she smelled chloroform and
saw signs of a struggle. Blood was on the floor. Mulder's tie and jacket were
on the ground. Actually, that reminded her that he may not have picked up
because he was having sex with Jade. That thought never occurred to her
before. All she had thought was saving his butt again. She knew he was in
danger, somewhere. Then she saw his cell phone. She took out her own.
        "Hello Langly?"
"Yes," it was three o'clock in the morning and he still sounded awake.
"Is there anyway to access the last number dialed from a cell phone?"
"Well we can call the company. Why?"
"No. I mean now. It's Mulder. I'm in his apartment. He's gone. I smell
chloroform and there's blood on the floor. Lots of blood." Her voice shook.
"Yeah, maybe. I'll get Byers on it. Bring the cell phone here. All of us are
awake except Frohike."
"Wonderful," she said and hung up quickly. She drove over and when she
knocked Byers answered the door and thrust a picture at her. The name at
the bottom said Agent Jade Skeller, CIA
"It's her," said Scully. "Here," she said, giving him the cell phone.
"Okay. Byers thinks he can do it by hacking into the company's computer
system and putting in Mulder's cell phone serial number." She nodded.
Langly put his arm around her. "We'll find him."
Byers went to work. In a few minutes he shrugged.
"Okay. Now what do you want to do."
"Let me call Danny. Oh, God, wait. It's three thirty in the morning. Danny's
not there."
        "Danny?"
"He get things for me and Mulder. Can you tell me where that number is?"
"Uh, I think so. Wait a minute." He typed furiously. "Yeah. It's a car phone.
Registered to a man named Seymour Simpson. Let me see something..."
"What?" asked Scully, leaning over his shoulder.
"He's in the CIA. Under that name. Do you think Mulder called him?"
"No, I think Jade did. I don't know. I just had a hunch. Can we get anything
on him?"
"Yeah, here's address." Byers pointed to a number on the screen.
"I'm going," she said. Byers held onto her.
"No, you're not. You haven't had any sleep, and you look awful You will be
in danger," he said. She knew he was right. She couldn't do anything until
morning.
"You can sleep on my couch," he offered. She shook her head.
"I wouldn't give Frohike the satisfaction. I'll be fine driving home." Then
she turned on her heel and left, with a piece of paper in her hand. The
address of Seymour Simpson. She didn't go back to her house. She sleep on
Mulder's couch. It made her feel closer to him.
********
He awoke, drowsy and sick. The first thing he noticed was the dampness of
the place. Was he in a basement. Then he noticed Jade.
"He's awake. Get the boss," she said making a slight movement with her
hand. In came the Cancer Man.
"Hello, Agent Mulder," he said, taking a drag on his Morley.
"What do *you* want?" he struggled to get up, but found he wasted to a
chair.
"Well, we have tried to be patient with you. But your search for the truth
has become far too revealing for us. We are going to solve that."
"You won't solve anything by killing me." Jade stood over him.
"Kill you?" she asked, "We wouldn't waste the bullet. No, you are going to be
part of a test. Agent Scully is already dying of cancer. She is no problem.
You. You are a problem. This is an experimental serum. We think it will
help you to think...shall we say clearer?" she asked, throwing a look to the
Cancer Man.
"Do it," he commanded. She nodded to the three blokes sitting across from
him. They advanced on Mulder. One of them held a needle. He cried out and
struggled. Just then, the door burst open.
********
Scully woke up at five. She felt awake and alert, so she decided the time was
right. She called up a friend, who was not happy to hear from her at five in
the morning. Then she called the gunmen and asked them to bring any
weapon they could find. And so the party- Frohike, Langly, Byers and
Skinner set out for the address. She knew he would be there.
The house was not far away. The didn't knock on the door. Instead Skinner
placed a swift kick to the back door and with Scully covering him, they
advanced down the basement stairs. They had brought the armed Gunmen
because they didn't know how many people would be there, and they wanted
to have the upper hand in numbers.
"Freeze," commanded Skinner. He pointed the gun at the men advancing on
Mulder. Scully pointed hers at Jade. And the Gunmen, all three of them,
pointed there's at the Cigarette Man. The people in the room froze. Jade
looked up.
"So it's the lovely Agent Scully come to save the day, huh?"
"Freeze, Bitch," she answered. "I'm going to untie him now," she said,
moving slowly toward Mulder. She got to him and realized that one of the
three large men was coming at her. There was an explosion and she was
covered with the man's blood. Skinner had shot him in the arm. He limped
away. She untied Mulder.
        "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine. Did you bring an extra gun?"
"Yup. Here's yours," she said. They backed away. The Cigarette Man
watched them. To their surprise he nodded.
"Let them go, Jade. You did well."
"Bu-But," she stuttered. He shook his head. The party quickly ran upstairs
and out the door.
********
"Oh, God Mulder," Scully breathed. He wrapped his arms around her and
hugged her tight. He breathed in the scent of her hair, the smell of her
faded perfume. She held tight to his waist.
        "I'm sorry I didn't listen to you. I-"
"It's okay. Just as long as you're safe."
He nodded and smiled, "I am. I'm very safe right here with you," he said,
still holding onto her. She closed her eyes.
"I...I knew that you were in trouble. I just knew." In response he kissed the
top of her head.
She let him go and they sat on his couch. After a few minutes he smiled.
"How'd you get Skinner in on it?"
"I told him you were in danger and I knew where you were. He was just
happy I didn't got at it alone."
        "And the Gunmen?"
"They had been helping me locate you. Those guys sleep less than you do,
Mulder. Anyway, Skinner asked if I knew anyone who would be happy to
help out. He still doesn't know who they are."
"I don't think I should date at all anymore. I end of falling for the wrong
woman."
"You just haven't me the right one yet," she said.
He put his arm around her. "You know, Scully, I think I have."
