Now on with the show

"The Scientific Method" 1/1

"Mulder, I can't believe you said that!"

"Scully, I said it twenty minutes ago." Mulder was
enjoying this. She just wouldn't let it drop.

Scully noticed his enjoyment at her discomfort. She
started yelling, "What you said is highly improbable,
highly irrational, and just plain bullsh-"

He cut her off, "Denial Scully, denial."

She simmered. "No, more like disbelief at the
suggestion of something so petty and...and stupid."

Mulder almost choked with laughter. "Stupid? If it's
so stupid, why are you still stuck on the subject?"

Scully's cheeks flamed, "Fine, let's drop it."
Unfortunately, Mulder was having too much fun at her
expense. "No."

"No?" Scully gulped.

"No. As a scientist, you can't leave one stone
unturned. Now tell my why one kiss between you and me
wouldn't induce anything more than simple,
emotionless, meeting of lips? Why wouldn't it lead to
something more? And why did it fluster you so much
when I said jokingly that a kiss would produce high
voltage?"

Why did she reveal her discomfort at what should have
been another innuendo, which was more than customary
in their daily lives? 'Stupid,' she reprimanded
herself. The problem with this one particular innuendo
was that it hit straight home. If they ever were to
kiss, for her it would mean so much more than just a
slight physical contact. "Umm...well, we're
professionals Mulder, we wouldn't exactly 'melt' for
one another. This is reality, not a Harlequin
romance." What the hell kind of excuse was that?
Scully was incredulous at her words.

Mulder's eyes twinkled with amusement. "Yes, this is
reality, and we're human." He got up and started to
slowly advance upon her.

Scully had never felt so flustered in her life as she
did that moment. "What's your point?" She eyed him
suspiciously as he approached her.

Mulder stopped, his lips curving into a smile. "Well,
you see," he began as if explaining the facts of life
to a child and not a brilliant FBI agent. "Sometimes
people tend to experience these wonderful feelings
towards another person..."

She cut him off, annoyed. "Mulder! Shut up!" She
started to slowly walk backwards as Mulder started to
approach her again. "What I mean is that a kiss
wouldn't induce these feelings between us." It didn't
take a kiss, just glances and mere touching was
adequate.

The humor flew out of his eyes. They now deepened into
a dark green, a serious look replacing the previous
mischief. Almost nearing her, he asked slowly, "So
Doctor Scully, your hypothesis is that a simple kiss
between us would jut be a kiss, nothing more?"

Scully's back gently hit the wall. Crap. She
stammered, "Ye-yes."

Mulder stopped about two inches in front of her. He
never stood this lose to her unless they were hugging
or holding each other for comfort. This close
proximity caused his breathing to stagger. "Are you
aware of the scientific method Scully?"

He wasn't the only one affected by their closeness.
She nodded, wondering where her voice went.

Mulder lifted one hand to her head. Twirling a soft
strand of auburn hair around his finger, he marveled
at her, at them. This felt so right. "Do you know what
the step that comes after the hypothesis is?

God he was so handsome. She breathed, "I believe it is
the experiment, use-"

He finished the sentence for her, "used to prove the
hypothesis." Gently cupping her face with his hand, he
bent his head and pressed his lips gently to hers. Not
moving his mouth, he awaited her reaction.

At the tender touch of his lips, Scully's heart flew.

Sparks flew.
Her rationality kicked in.

Mulder's blood pressure kicked in. His ears rang with
utter happiness.

Scully began to move away, her head and heart fighting
in their ambivalence.

Mulder swiftly moved his hand to the back of her head,
keeping her to him. He pressed his lips a little
harder to hers.

She succumbed.

Hearts pounded in unison. Their mouths began moving
together gently.

Electricity coursed like a live wire.

The kiss deepened.

The final data:
She melted.
He melted.
