DISCLAIMER: They're not mine. RATING: PG maybe? KEYWORDS: MSR, some angst, allusion to Mulder/other SUMMARY: This story is a sequel to my story 'She Reminded Me of You.' You don't have to read it to understand this, but there really isn't much of a plot here without it. I wrote this in response to e-mails asking me to come up with a more positive ending. So here goes... Dear Mulder, If you get this, it means I'm either dead or missing or incapacitated. The Gunmen are under orders to give this letter to you if anything happens to me. It's my failsafe, so that hopefully the Consortium won't touch me. First off, you have to understand that the Consortium uses you... they need you. You do important investigative work, and they're watching you. You find information, and they're listening. You're too valuable to them. The CSM kept your sister dangling on a string right in front of you so that you would continue your quest, and they could continue to benefit from it. When you found out she was dead, your search lessened some, but by then you were in so deep, you had no intention of quitting. I don't know how the Consortium found out about the night we spent together. But they did, and they started to panic. They thought a romantic relationship with me would distract you. They were going to kill me, but then someone figured out that if I died, you would probably follow me with your own hand. They forced me to leave you. They threatened your life, as well as the lives of my family. They were so wrong. How could they think that our involvement would lead us away from trying to stop them? It's so much bigger than just you and I. They didn't expect you to fall in love with someone else. They thought that without me, you would emerge yourself in the work; become even more obsessed. Instead, you found Ryan. The Consortium was worried at first, fearing the same situation they had thought when they learned of you and I. When Ryan convinced you to quit the Bureau, they were furious. They tried to get to her, using her Naval Intelligence connection, but she refused. They tried to intimidate her; that gang stabbing was no accident. But still she refused. You asked her to marry you, and she said yes. I had no idea what they were planning, please believe me. They knew they had to get rid of her, but didn't want another situation ending with your death. So they came up with an idea to keep you looking for your aliens instead of giving up. They abducted her, just as they did with me. But they didn't perform tests on her like me. Instead they just kept her for a couple of months, and then returned her to you dead. They figured you'd be driven to seek revenge on the 'aliens' who killed her. And then to make absolutely sure, they sent me back to you under explicit orders to keep you on track. I agreed for many reasons. First, I could still help you fight. Second, I figured you could use the emotional support. Third, we could be together. I don't think you know how much pain I was in without you. Every letter I got from you tore out pieces of my heart, especially as you described your blossoming relationship with Ryan. I didn't expect... no, I couldn't even hope to become romantically involved with you so soon after your fiance's death. But some forces are too strong to ignore. We resumed our relationship exactly where we had left off almost immediately after my return. I understood that you hadn't forgotten about Ryan. I knew you had loved her. But we are soul mates, and you had never once stopped loving me. The Bureau took us back, no questions asked. I'm sure the Consortium had a hand in that. I know they had everything to do with our getting the X-Files back. I don't think you even noticed how easy it was, even though the FBI had happily closed them down when I left last year. You were too ready to get started redeeming Ryan's death. So that's where we are now. It's hard for me sometimes, knowing that the quest we are now chasing is about your former lover. Someone you were going to marry, and who was taken away from you. It's not fair. But neither is my being barren, or my sister's murder. Or your sister's abduction and death. Or your father's abuse. It seems like nothing has been fair for us. But maybe we can change that starting now. We're not in the most ideal situation, but we're still together. If you're reading this, if something has happened to me, I hope I have left a little part of me with you. I love you so much, and I hope you can continue without me. Scully
