Feedback: On my knees and begging for it. Author's Notes: I wrote this one in a complete burst which I never do so by the time it has been posted it'll be too late! It is based on spoilers I was sent by a friend before Requiem. Hey at least I hope they were spoilers and I haven't ripped off someone's story! Please read PLEASE respond! She Wishes Starbuck_Jayne Four years is a long time to wait...for anything. In four years you become impatient, aggravated, annoyed. But normally in four years you are able to get on with your life. You have time to forget, push the eagerly awaited new car...home...promotion or whatever to the back of your mind. Or at least relocate it somewhere. For Dana Scully it was different. That coming Tuesday it was four years since he disappeared, and yet, in those four years not once had she managed to stop thinking about him. Each night he was the centre of her dreams and each day finding him was the centre of her every investigation, the top of her "to do" list and the reason behind her every tear. She cried now. Resting her head on hands supported by the wooden pew below. The scenario bore striking resemblances to one of their first cases together. They had been sent to find a small girl, and the whole ordeal had reminded her partner of the loss of his own sister. She realised now what he must have suffered. She realised now why it had been so important for him to find Samantha. It was like a wound that could never heal, always susceptible to further hurt. And the pain it caused was unbearable-Scully had never experienced such remorse. Not when her father died, or even her sister...the person she had thought she was closest to in the whole world. That was just it though-she was assuming Mulder was dead, she didn't even know. There was a small tug on her sleeve and Scully turned to see her son, gazing up at her through dampened hazel eyes. "Don't cry, mommy," he begged. Smiling sadly Scully lifted the toddler onto her lap and kissed his forehead, smoothing down his tousled dark hair. "I'm sorry, sweetie," she whispered, "guess I just miss your daddy sometimes." Scully took his hand and together they left the cool confines of the church, stepping out into the warm sunlight. Throughout her pregnancy she had spent countless nights just sitting by the window in her apartment, staring up at the stars. Begging them to let her have him back. When she went into labour she had cried the whole time. Screaming out for him, knowing he wasn't there for the birth of their child. What had the doctors done? Assumed it was just labour pains and prescribed more painkillers. It was nay wonder Matthew wasn't born with a serious addiction! She smiled lovingly at her son. She didn't know how it was possible; she didn't really want to. All that mattered was it had happened and Matthew was living proof that miracles exist. For that she thanked God at every waking moment. She just wished...she wished he'd been there. He'd have teased her no end about her size that's for sure! But he'd have been there the first time she felt the baby kick, watched as he took his first step and clapped in delight as he spoke his first word. "Da-da". Very fitting Matthew, yes. "Can we go to the park, mommy?" he wanted to know, pulling at her sleeve again. He'd have his father's strength no doubt. Scully laughed. "I don't see why not. But mommy has to pick up some files from work first, ok sweetie?" Matthew smiled; he didn't seem to mind the trips into the Hoover Building too much. His mom would sometimes tell him stories about his daddy-how they used to go off on adventures together, chasing aliens and fighting off evil monsters. Matthew would sit on the edge of the desk, wide-eyed; thumb resting on the lip of a mouth which remained open in wonder. Sometimes, if he was especially good, the little boy's patience would be rewarded with a sunflower seed from the packet hidden inside the desk. Scully had found herself craving the wretched things when she became pregnant, but now the pack remained in Mulder's drawer simply out of tradition. Strictly speaking, the children of employees were not allowed inside the FBI's headquarters but the director, Walter Skinner, tended to make exceptions for Scully. That and Agent Doggett, her new partner, despite being a total jerk wasn't likely to snitch. Scully collected the file and left. She had found the office deserted, but a quick glance around had reassured her that all was well. Mulder's poster remained in its spot above his desk and it was still his nameplate that hung from the door, claiming this as his territory. "It's all here for you, Mulder," she thought, "it just needs you to get back and sort it out." She flicked a tear from her eye with a swift hand movement, before closing the door and hurrying from the building. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX That night Scully was alone. Bill and Tara were in town and had insisted on taking Matthew to stay with his older cousin. Curled up on the sofa Scully flipped through file after file of typed and hand-written notes. Disappearances. Abductions. It was all there, it just wasn't providing her with any answers. Closing her eyes to block the tears that threatened, Scully took a deep breath and set down the documents. Pressing a hand to her face she began to sob. "Four years Mulder, and still...I've let you down!" The phone rang. Her first thought was to ignore it but a glance at the clock told her it was after 1am-this had to be important... Author's Notes: This is a sequel to the story "She Wishes" and I have no idea what to say except I hope you like it and please let me know if you do or if you don't cos I just need opinions!! Dedicated to Jill as always. Oh and I am really sorry I don't live in and have never been 2 the US :-( so I am not 2 sure on how the police force and stuff works so I just took the easy way out by calling the policeman Officer. Also as with my other 3 post- Requiem stories I still haven't seen the episode yet so sorry if I mess up!!!! Also, I didn't intend for Scully's little boy to have the same name as her nephew!! (But then again is her nephew called Michael or Matthew????) So complicated! She Wishes By Starbuck_Jayne Starbuck_Jayne@mulderandscully.co.uk XXXXXXXXXXXXX (Previously on The X-Files <>) The phone rang. Her first thought was to ignore it but a glance at the clock told her it was after 1am-this had to be important... XXXXXXXXXXXXX "Hello?" "Agent Scully?" "Yes," she was unnerved by the use of her full title, seeing as this *was* a private line. "My name is Chuck Davis. I'm an officer out in Bellefleur..." Scully's heart leaped and she grasped the phone tighter. "Have, have you found him? Have you found Agent Mulder?" "Mulder? Well we found *someone*. Couldn't begin to say whom, ma'am. No ID, nothing. Just turned up in the hospital here 'bout a week ago..." "Is he alright? Is he unconscious?" "Was up until about half an hour ago yes. Scared the heck outta one of the nurses- shot up in bed just screaming for you Ma'am. He's been sedated enough so as we could get your details off him but he's still a bit disorientated-doesn't know the date, or even really who he is..." The policeman's drawl would no doubt have continued had Scully not cut him off by thanking him, and promising she would be in Oregon in a couple of hours. XXXXXXXXXXXXX The hospital was silent when she arrived, a quiet which made the agent nervous, causing her to voice her request in hushed whispers to the nurse on duty. The plump woman began retrieving Mulder's details painfully slowly, typing his name hesitantly into her computer. Scully tapped her heel impatiently against the tiles, considering on more than one occasion taking the keypad and typing in her partner's initials herself. "I'm sorry, Miss Scully, there are no Fox Mulders listed." Scully hid her exasperation by biting her lip and instructing the nurse to check for any John Does that they may have. "Ahh yes," she said, "first floor, second door on the left. Room 14." Scully was off. She didn't bother with the elevator, deciding that under the circumstances the stairs would be quicker. Her heart pounded within her chest and she became light-headed. Pausing on the stairway she caught her breath and steadied herself. The door in front was all that separated her from Mulder, the one she had searched and begged for all these past four years. Pushing the door open she stepped through. The only light in the room was coming from the faint blue-glow given off by the various machines Mulder was hooked up to. Yes, it was Mulder...it might have been difficult to see for all the hair, which matted about his cheeks, but Scully knew the familiar features too well to be thrown. Her hand reached for the light switch, but a voice from the shadows caused her to move away in surprise. "No! He doesn't like the light," the female warned. "What? Who are you?" Scully spoke, peering into the gloom. A nurse stepped forward. "Nurse Brown. I've been looking after your partner this past week," she brushed a hand over the sleeping form in the bed. "But now that you're here...well I think my work is done." She beamed up at Scully then hurried away before she had time even to thank her. She moved towards her partner, tears already beginning to sting her eyes. Pulling up a chair she sat down at his bedside, taking his hand in both of her own and kissing it gently. "Mulder it's me," she told him, smiling at the familiarity of the phrase. "I know you can hear me...and, well...I need you to know something, Mulder..." she paused, "I missed you!" She squeezed his hand tighter, smiling through the faint mist of tears. "I don't think you know how long you've been away, Mulder...but, well I guess I can tell you when you wake up." She eased her grasp on his hand, swivelling around to read his charts. They described symptoms similar to those that, not only had she herself experienced after her abduction, but that Mulder had shown earlier in the year before he disappeared. She knew he'd be all right now-he just needed a little time. XXXXXXXXXXXXX It was morning when she awoke, judging by the daylight which filtered through gaps in the closed curtains. The pain in her neck reminded her how she had spent the night-asleep at his bedside, head rested on his chest. At first she had assumed that she had been woken by the sunlight, but the amounts which made it past the heavy cloth of the curtains were too minimal. She smoothed a strand of hair from her face and looked up. There he lay, eyes wide open just watching her. She was briefly startled, but then she wondered why he had not woken her. Did he recognise her? Did he even see her? "Mulder?" she ventured? "Mulder, it's me!" It was then she realised he was crying. A single tear ran down his face, staining the flesh in its path before becoming lost within the beard which now adorned his chin. She reached forward, pulling him towards her and kissing his temple. "Mulder you scared me so much!" "Sc...Scully?" he breathed into her neck. It was more a realisation than a question, spoken in a scratchy voice, which prompted her to reach for the water at the side of his bed. She lifted the glass to his lips, willing him to drink. "Shh. Don't talk, Mulder...just concentrate on getting better!" "But Scully...how...how long?" She smiled sadly. "Four years, Mulder. Four years today." He closed his eyes and swallowed, mentally digesting this information. "Four? Four years?" She nodded. His eyes slipped open again and his gaze trailed to her wedding finger. He tried to smile and she followed his gaze, realising suddenly what he was looking at. "Oh! Mulder!" she laughed. "Scully, I...I don't remember..." "Don't remember what?" "How I got here!" "Shh! It's not important! Just try and rest Mulder...it doesn't matter now!" He reached for her hand, which she placed in his, allowing him to caress her fingers. His eyes closed again and she felt him relax, sinking into the pillows. She stroked his hair, running her gentle fingers through the tangled mess and smiling the whole time. "Scully?" "Yeah?" she whispered "Did you go...to the hospital and get the tests?" She was puzzled. Then it struck her. Matthew. "Yeah, yeah I did Mulder." XXXXXXXXXXXXX "Matthew!" Scully called the little boy from where she was standing in the doorway. "Mommy!!!" She smiled as she heard his voice-excited. Eager to see his mommy again. She had called her own mother from the hospital at the beginning of the week, letting her know where she was. Maggie Scully had been as overjoyed at the news as her daughter, and had brought Matthew to the phone, allowing Scully to speak to him. But now she was back and Matthew's patience was about to be rewarded. He came charging around the corner, arms wide in the hope of a hug. Upon seeing her, his eyes brightened and he let out a small cry of delight. She opened her arms, but he stopped. Suddenly appearing to be very shy, Matthew turned and backed into his mother's legs, thumb in his mouth, eyes wary. "Trust no one huh Matthew?" Scully smiled before picking him up and cradling him in her arms. Matthew still kept one eye on this new man who his mommy had brought home. "Sweetie, I want you to meet your daddy." XXXXXXXXXXXXX End? Not sure where I wanna go with this one now! Could be the end but maybe we could have a Mulder/son reunion scene or something??? Also I read in spoilers that Scully's son gets taken... Not sure which is why I would LOVE to hear from everyone!!! PLEASE send feedback!
