Scully ran. She ran as fast as she could, needing to get back to the
car, so she might possibly find Mulder. Hoping he was okay, and still
in the quarry. He needed to know what had just happened to The Shadow
Man, the super soldier.

Her lungs burned, she wasn't used to such physical activity and was more
than slightly out of shape since giving birth. Her sides ached and she
threw a look behind her before stopping and bending over, trying to
catch her breath.

She was grabbed from behind and pulled away from the open space. Scully
struggled against the large, strong hands that held her arms. Once they
were out of site she was turned around and pulled roughly into an
achingly familiar embrace.

She opened her mouth to speak, but was silenced by his hand draping over
her lips.

"Shh," he whispered. "We don't have much time." He removed his hand and
she felt her eyes fill as she regarded him.

In the dark she could barely make out the outline of his face, so close
to hers. Reaching up she ran her fingers down his cheek and found
wetness there.

"I needed to see you." He spoke hoarsely. "We were so close, and I
couldn't leave again without seeing you."

"I know." She whispered back. "The man, he...he,"

"Shh, I need to go now."

"Don't." She whispered childishly.

"It's not forever." He kissed her forehead before pulling her tightly
into his arms and plundering his mouth with hers.

As quickly as the kiss began, it was over and he was pulling away from
her. Pulling himself out of her arms and taking off in a sprint in the
direction she'd come from. Scully felt her breath come out in soft
gasps before one hitching breath sent tears coursing down her cheeks,
cutting off her air supply, choking her. Choking her like her need for
him. Her need to hold him, and her need to protect him and keep him
safe. In the end, the need for their safety won out, and she somehow
collected herself and went to find Doggett and Reyes. She didn't tell
them about her transient meeting with Mulder, preferring to keep that
detail to herself.

Mulder was right, it wouldn't be forever; but she didn't know how much
longer she could wait.

End!
