******************************
This is being posted again, because (stupid me) I accidentally hit the "send"
button half way through writing this. You'd be getting this a lot sooner,
it's just I had to re- write the whole thing. Sorry ;-)

DISCLAIMER: Unfortunately, these (amazing) characters aren't mine. If they
were, Mulder and Scully would already have admitted their feelings to each
other, and Ed Jerse, never would of even met Scully.... They belong to CC,
FOX, 1013, DD, GA and who ever else they legally belong to. I am only
borrowing them, and they will be returned.

I rate this ... PG- 13. It's just a story about two people in love. And no,
they don't physically act on those feelings. Maybe in the sequel, if there
should be a sequel. Let me know at : 76322.3057@compuserve.com

Also, even though this story was written in light of Scully's cancer, it is
not mentioned in this story, so I guess you could call it an alternate
universe. You'll see what I mean.

Oh yeah, and I'd just like to thank all those who inspired me to write this.
Mulder, Scully, who by the way are soul mates. David Duchonvy and Gillian
Anderson, who I also think are made for each other. Chris Carter, for
creating the best show in the history of the world. And Vince Gilligan, who
by far is the most talented writer I've ever known. I'd also like to thank
Paula Graves, whose amazing fanfic inspired me to write some of my own.

Ok, ok, ok. Enough talk. On with the show!

One Fateful Night (1/1)

J. Edgar Hoover Building 12:03am.

Scully tucked the remainder of case files back into the drawer. It had been a
long night. Skinner had demanded that she an Mulder have at least 5 of the 7
unsolved cases concluded by the following morning. They had managed to come
up with a solid bases for 4 of them, but were unable to resolve the final 3.
"Scully? What time is it?" Mulder's voice broke the silence. He sounded low
and hoarse, as if he hadn't slept in years.
"Uh... it's just after midnight. Why?"
Mulder turned around from the slide projector to face her. "Well I'm starved.
Wanna grab a bite to eat with me?"
Scully closed the filing cabinet, and walked towards the door. "Sure," she
said as she took her coat. "Where?"

Mc Donalds 12:32 am

The restaurant was almost completely deserted. An old man sat in the cornor,
finishing some coffee, and a Mc Donald employee was mopping up the floor.
Mulder and Scully entered, the opening of the door, breaking the thick
silence. Mulder gently guided Scully through the door. The heat of his hand
on her back made every nerve in her body tingle. She was so tired, she just
wanted to fall back into his strong embrace.
"May I help you?" The woman who stood behind the cashier, was a fairly
elderly woman. Her grayish brown hair was tucked delicatly into the hair net
she wore a top her head. She stared impatiently at Mulder and Scully, waiting
for their response.
Mulder placed his order first, a BigMac and large fries. Scully ordered a
quarter pounder with a large fries.
"Anything to drink?" The woman asked.
"Two iced- teas," Mulder quickly replied, before Scully even had a chance to
open her mouth to speak.
When they got their meals, they went into a booth in the far cornor of the
restaurant. Mulder was thankful for the peace of the restaurant, and the
illusion of isolation the booth gave. He was glad just to dissolve into his
own little world with Scully for a little while.
As they started to eat their food, the door opened, and a young man walked
in. His hair was almost as dark as his eyes, and his face was covered with a
day's growth of beard. He slowly entered the restaurant, reaching into his
pocket...
"No body move!!!!!" His deep voice echoed through the restaurant. The woman
behind the counter flew into a state of panic. Screaming, she dove behind the
shelter of the cashier's booth.
Mulder and Scully rushed to where the man was standing, drawing their guns in
the process.
"OK," Scully calmly said, as she aimed her gun at the man with the gun.
"Let's end this now. Put your gun down, and no one will get hurt."

Mc Donald's 12:47 am

Mulder held Scully tightly. His left arm was carefully cradling her head,
while his right and firmly pressed against her left hip. He could feel the
blood seeping through his fingers.
"Mulder...." Her voice was faint, barely above a whisper.
"Shh... It's OK Scully. You'll be OK. The paramedics will be here soon.
You're going to be just fine." He tried to reassure himself with that
statement that he would, but it was hard. Adrenaline coursed through his
veins, as he pulled her even closer to himself.
Her blood continued to soak his hands. He could feel her life slipping
through his shaking fingers. Simultaneously, his own life began to dissolve.
Where the hell where the EMT's?
Scully started to shake. Her body violently vibrated against Mulder.
Mulder only held her tighter. Trying to stop her movement, he pressed her
against the floor.
Suddenly, she stopped. No movement. Pure silence.
"Scully?... Scully?" Mulder ever- so - gently shook her. She was completely
non- responsive.
"Come on. Don't do this Scully.... Scully?" Frantically, Mulder looked
around the room. The older woman was anxiously awaiting the arrival of the
paramedics. She stood in front of a large window at the side of the building,
desperatly searching for any sign of the ambulances. Where was the shooter?
Mulder returned his attention to his dying partner. "Scully?" Leaning into
her ear, he gently whispered, "Come on. You'll make it. I know you.
Please....." He kissed her temple, and felt her soft, warm breath lightly
caressing his neck. He reassured himself with that, that she would be OK.
Finally, the sound of sirens filled his ears.
"The ambulances are here Scully," he gently whispered to her ear. "You're
going to be OK. But you'll have to do me a favour; hang on. Promise me
that."
Two men ventured into the building The first was carrying an orange first-
aid kit. His face was expressionless, but Mulder swore he saw sympathy and
concern in the young man's eyes. He was followed by a shorter, but no less
built man, who was wheeling in a stretcher. The two quickly rushed to the
couple lying on the blood stained floor.
"What do we have?" The first man spoke.
"Gunshot wound to the left hip. It appears an artery has been punctured."
Mulder said the words as if reciting the details of a case to his partner. He
tried to forget it WAS his partner he was referring to.
"OK," the second man said. "Let's try to move her onto the stretcher......
Careful."
Mulder slowly eased himself away from Scully. Gently, he turned her from her
side, lying her as carefully as he could on her back. He removed his arm form
its position under her neck, slowly lowering her head to the ground.
The EMT's assisted her onto the stretcher, giving her oxygen as the did so.
As they wheeled her out of the restaurant, Mulder sat up on the ground. His
body felt cold. The loss of her heat overwhelmed him and he began to shake.
His arms were incredably heavy and weak as he tried support himself. He turned
and watched the ambulance race off into the darkness of the night. They'd
better be careful, he dismally thought. They don't realize they are dealing
with two lives, not one.

Mount Sinaii Hospital. 1:21 am

The elevator gave a slightly muted "ding" as the doors opened. Mulder stepped
out into the quiet halls of the hospital. The bright lights stung his tired
eyes.
He walked over to the nearest nurse, who was placing some freshly washed
sheets onto the shelves of the storage closet. "Do you know what room Dana
Scully is in?"
The nurse turned around and eyed Mulder. The blood on his shirt had dried,
and turned a brownish colour. His face was pale, and dark circles surrounded
his eyes. Sweat glued his hair to his face, and the lights of the hospital
shone off his wet face.
" Do you know where she is?!" Mulder repeated impatiently.
Taking one last look at Mulder, she responded, "Room 1013. Go down the hall,
and take a left."
Before she had even finished her sentance, Mulder was halfway down the hall.
He came to room 1013, and slowly opened the door.
Scully lay on the white bed spread of the immaculatly clean hospital room.
Her face was almost as pale as the sheets. Tubes ran up her arms, supplying
her with nutrients, and more tubes ran up her nose giving her oxygen.
Mulder slowly walked in, and took a seat beside the bed. Why you Scully? He
thought dismally to himself. Why not me? He pulled the chair closer to the
bed, and gently took her hand.
Suddenly, the door opened, and an older man walked in. He had a short,
neatly trimmed beard, gray like his hair. His warm hazel eyes illuminated his
kind face. He finished writing something on the clipboard he carried in his
right arm, and crossed over to the bed to stand beside Mulder.
"How's she doing?" Mulder asked, not even sure if he wanted to know the
answer.
"Well, she's lost quite a bit of blood. The bullet just missed her hip bone.
But there was a lot of damage done to the surrounding muscles." The doctor
exaimined Scully, then turned to Mulder. "Are you her husband?"
Mulder gently released Scully's had, so he could properly face the doctor.
"No," he quietly said. "I'm her partner." Mulder's gaze dropped from the
man's face to the floor. "Will she be OK?"
"It's hard to tell at this point. She has lost a lot of blood, and she needs
her rest. We'll keep her here for observation for a while."
Mulder turned to Scully. Seeing her lie there so pale, so helpless....
Something inside of him continued to hurt.
The doctor gently rested his had atop Mulder's shoulder. "She shouldn't have
any visitors, but if you promise to be quiet, I'll make an exception." The
old man smiled, and turned to walk out the door.

Mount Sinaii Hospital. 2:07am

"OK. Let's end this now. Put your gun down, and no one will get hurt."
Mulder started at the man who stood across from him. The man's eyes bore
into him. Cold and hatred shone in his eyes. Mulder took a quick glance at
Scully, she nodded at him, and took a few steps closer to the man with the
gun. Mulder released a soft sigh, and quickly smiled at his partner. She
constantly amazed him. Her coolness, her calmness, acting as if she were
stealing candy from a sleeping baby.
Prying his gaze away from his partner, he returned his attention to the armed
man who stood only a couple of feet in front of him. The man smirked, the
turned to Scully. Before Mulder even knew what happened, a sharp peircing
sound rang through his ears. Scully's blood pooled around her body, which lay
on the floor.
"NOOOO!!!!!!!!" Mulder screamed. He raced over to his partner, and pressed
his index and middle finger on her blood covered throat. Nothing. Lowering
his ear to her mouth, he desperatly listened for breathing. Nothing.
"No Scully... no......" he pleaded. "Please no... please Scully... Scuh...
Scuh..."

Mulder awoke with a start. His heart pounded in his chest, threatening to
explode. Sweat poured down his face, and his vision blurred. Where am I? He
wondered. Then he saw her. Saw her pale form lying delicatly on the bed,
heard her soft, yet steady breathing. She's alive.
Mulder moved from the chair and crouched beside the bed. He took her hand,
and twined his fingers through hers. Oh Scully. Please don't leave me.
Please..... please.... God... noGodnoGod..... No... I can't live without
her........" He looked at her beautiful face, realization brewing in his
stomach. God please... I love her too much. He lay his face on her stomach,
and cried.

Mount Sinaii Hospital. 8:42am

Scully slowly opened her eyes. The light poured in through the window beside
her bed. No, wait. Not her bed. Where was she? She looked around the room.
Hospital, she quickly concluded. Then her senses started to awaken, and a
sharp pain shot through her left hip. As she turned to examine the source of
pain, she saw him. He lay gently on her stomach. His eyes were closed and
stained with tears. His face was pale, and his eye lids fluttered, indicating
he was dreaming. His had was twind through hers, holding on as if he were to
let go, he might fall. With her free hand, she gently stroked his hair,
careful not to wake him.
Oh Mulder, she smiled. You're here. Seeing him lie there, brought an
overwhelming sense of comfort to her. He'll always be here for me, she
thought.
Mulder opened his eyes, and saw her white, yet beautiful face, with bright
blue eyes looking back at him.
	"Scully?"
	"Hey."
Mulder couldn't believe she was there, smiling and talking to him. He
tightened his grip on her hand, and lifted his head off of her stomach. "How
are you feeling?"
"Other than the sharp pain in my hip, fine. A little woozy from the
medication, though." She smiled again at him. Thankful he was here. Here
with her. Always. God knew she'd always be there for him.
"Good." Mulder realized he had to tell her what he had discovered last
night. He had felt these feelings for a long time. Since the day he met her.
Felt them in a dark car outside Toom's house, in a storage closet in Icy
Cape. Felt them in a survellance van outside Fairfax Mercy Hospital. They'd
always been there. But he could never tell her. Now he realized they didn't
have forever. And no matter what happens, he'd always love her. And he
prayed to God she loved him too.
"Scully, when that gun went off and you fell,"
"I know, I know," She softly said.
He turned to face her, his eyes forcing her to look at him. "I was so
afraid he'd killed you. I was afraid you were dead, and I would never see you
again." A single tear slid down her cheek. "I was afraid. But then when I
realized you were alive," he didn't know how to continue. "I realized
something else. I love you. I love you with all my heart."
"Oh Mulder." Scully was so glad he'd said the words. She'd dreamt about the
day she'd tell him she loved him more than any one in the whole world. She
couldn't believe that day had come. "I love you too."

Mount Sinaii Hospital. 9:37am

Margret Scully raced down the hall of the hospital. The sound of her shoes
echoed down the corridor.
"Are you Doctor Sullivan?" Magret frantically asked the first person she
saw.
The old man turned to face her. Concern and fear shone in the woman's eyes,
and her hands were tightly clenched.
	"Yes. May I help you?"
Forcing herself to calm down, she replied, "What room is Dana Scully in?"
"She's down the hall in room 1013..."
Margret rushed down the hall towards the hospital room where her daughter
lay.
"...But she's not allowed visitors" The doctor's voice followed her down the
hall, but she ignored him. Peering through the window, she came to a hault.
Scully lay on the bed, her back to her mother. Her arms were wound tightly
around the man who lay beside her. Mulder held her equally tightly, his eyes
closed, and his facial expressions implied a peaceful dream. They lay there,
side by side, holding onto each other, and each other's love.
Margret smiled, and retreated down the hall. She'd come back later.
