Summary: Mulder and Scully go to an FBI picnic and find out a little
something about Mrs. Scully, their boss, and themselves.

"Oh, just the person I wanted to catch!"
Fox Mulder spun around to see Dana Scully, his pretty, red headed
partner, heading toward him. "What?"
"I want you to listen to me, and don't speak until I finish. There's an
FBI picnic on Saturday, and I was wondering if you could go. I know what
your answer is without thinking, but please consider it Mulder. I think it
could be fun, and if it isn't we can leave early. But I think we both need
some fresh air."
"Sully, you know I hate those thimgs, 'he said, but as he watched her
face fall he couldn't help but feel bad. She wasn't often in such a perky
mood. He didn't want to ruin itand maybe it wouldn't be that bad Even he
was surprised to hear himself say, "Oh, fine, Scully. I'll go."
Her face lit up. "Oh, good. I'll pick you up at ten o'clock."
Mulder sighed. Might as well do it right. "No, *I* will be at *your*
house at ten o'clock. Haven't you ever heard of chivalry, Scully?"
Scully seemed surprised. "Wellok, I'll see you then."

Saturday morning dawned bright and warm, the perfect day for a picnic.
Mulder was beginning to have secind thouhts, but he *had* promised. What
should he wear? God, he'd worked with this woman for seven years and he
didn't even know what her taste in men's clothing was. Finally, he decided
on a new pair of jean shorts and a white polo shirt. After combing his hair,
he rushed out the door. He couldn't be late.
Scully was wondering if she had made the right decision. What was she
thinking? She had actually made a dte (both knew that was what it was) with
her partner. What would she wear? Finally she decided on a light blue twin
set with a long, flowing, light green skirt, The skirt had little blue
flowers on the bottom that werw the same color as the twin set. Unlike
Mulder,s he took the time to eat before putting on a dash of pink lipstick
and a pair of nice brown boots. Then, she sat down for the worst
part-waiting.
He hadn't been prepared for what he saw when she opened the door. Very
un-Scully, at least in relation to the Scully he knew from work. He was
speechless, how nice she looked in that very simple, everyday, feminine
outfit. Finally, he managed to say, "Scully, you look nice."
She smiled. "Thank you. So don't you."
Well, why don't we get going? We don't want to miss any of the food,"
said Mulder.
Scully frowned. "mulder, did you eat breakfast?"
    He looked guilty. "No."
"Mulder, how many times do I have to tell youwell, never mind. I'm not
going to let you ruin my day. Lets go!" Linking her arm into his, she led
off.

The picnic was already well underway by the time they arrived, but Mulder
didn't miss the food. They searched in vain for Skinner, but couldn't find
him. "Gee, I guess he's even later than us," said Mulder happily. "Now we
don't have to worry, Scully. C'mon, lets' go play Frisbee!"
After an hour of Frisbee Scully decided that she had had enough.
"mulder, I'm just going to sit under this tree for a little while," she
called. He nodded and waved, immersed in the game. Scully didn't care, it
was nice to see him having a good time. As she settled under the tree she
remembered that they hadn't seen Skinner yet. She began to scan the field
for him.
She didn't quite find him, but the person she did she shocked her. "Mom?"
Maggies scully was only a few feet away. Scully called out," Mom!" but
she didn't respond. Begrudgingly, Scully got up and walked over. Tapping
her mother on the shoulder, she said, "Mom, why are you here?"
Maggie turned around as if Scully had touched her with fire. She seemed
almost as surpised as Scully. "Why, hello Dana," she said. "Whata
surprise."
"Actually, I think the surprise is all mine," said Scully dryly. "Since
when do you work for the FBI?"
Maggie laughed. "Oh, don't be silly, dear. That would never happen. No
offense to you, of course, but it's not my type of work. Anyways, I thought
you hated these things."
"I hardly think that we are debating why *I* am here, I happen to work
for the FBI. And it's Mulder who hates these, I just got him to come for
today. Don't dodge, Mom, why are you here? Not that you aren't welcome,
but..," Scully was angry. She wanted to know why her mother would just show
up like this. Silly as she knew it was, she felt like she was in high school
and her mother had showed up at one of the dances. And there were things
Scully didn't want her to see.
Maggie sighed. "You don't give up, do you? I suppose you get that from
your father. I am here because I friend invited me. Well, Dana, it was nice
seeing you, but I have to go now. Ta ta!"
Scully watched her mother saunter off. "What is she *on*?" she muttered
to herself. "She is never like this."
Suddenly, she was grabbed from behind. She started to fight as she
said," What the-"
"Whats the matter, Scully? You look upset?' said Mulder.
Scully turned around. "Mulder, you scared me to death! It's my mother.
She's here..and she's acting really weird.'
"Your mother is here?" he whispered, loosening his grip and moving away."
"Yeah, some where. Don't worry, Mulder," she said, pushing herself up
against him and wrapping her arms around him.
Mulder could barely speak. This was *definitely* not the Scully he was
used to. "So, uh, Scully, you said she was acting weird?"
Scully nodded. "Yeah, you know if I didn't know better I'd sayshe's
involved with some guy. A while ago she met some guy, and she acted like
that. I remember her being so depressed when it ended. But who in the FBI
could she be dating?"
Mulder shrugged. "Don't let it ruin your day. Say, Scully, wanna go for
a hike in the woods?"
"Mulder, the last time we went for a hike"
"Look, Scully, I promise no moth men, no jersey devils, no X-Files. Just
a nice, quiet, walk in the woods."
"Oh, I see. Well, thenas long as you promise. Guns don't mix with
skirts," she said with a smile. Then, lacing her arm into his, she said,
"Lead away, Mr. Mulder."
Mulder was almost delirious. Ultra flirt-Scully today, he thought. He'd
never seen Scully this coy and flirtatious. He didn't know where it came
from, but he sure liked it. "Right this way, madame," he said.
Apparently Mulder had been here before, because he led her straight to a
path without looking. As soon as they got into the woods, Scully began to
appreciate his taste. It was so quiet and peacefuland private. Scully
enjoyed snuggling up against Mulder, pretending he was her protector.
Suddenly, they heard noises coming from the woods.
"Mulder, do you hear that?" she asked.
"Yeah, I do.what do you think it is?" asked Mulder.
Scully smirked. "Oh, I have no doubt what it is."
    "And what's that?" asked Mulder.
"Why, it isn't obvious to you, Mulder? It's just a couple of kids who
decided to get thier ya-yas and work off some hormones."
Mulder finally got it. "Oh. What do you want to do?"
Scully sighed. "Well, I guess we had better go stop them before they
reach home.. Maybe give them a little lecture about the prudence of waiting
until marriage."
Mulder had to stifle a laugh at that one. "whatever you say."
Scully started to go into the woods, but turned around and said," Mulder,
I can't go like this. The ground is way too muddy. Why don't you go get
them and I'll wait here."
Here was his chance. "Uh..Scully..I could always carry you.."
Sully was taken aback. "Well...Mulder..I don't know what to say." Mulde
rheld his breath, until she smiled. "Thats a good idea."
Mulder carefully scooped her up and headed for the woods. Carefully,
they followed the sounds until they reached the clearing. Peering through
the trees, trhey were surprised at what they saw.
"Uh..scully..forgive me if I'm wrong, but that looks like Skinner and
your mother doing the wild thing."
Scully grimaced. "You aren't wrong. Let me down."
"Hold on, let me get you through the brush." Mulder brought Scully into
the clearing, and put her down.
    "Mom?" yelled Scully.
Mrs. Scully looked up, and a look of horror passed through her face.
"Oh....Dana."
"Scully cut her off. "Don't even ry to explain this away. I'm an adult.
I know what you were doing . And much as I am shocked an disappointed, I
can't yell at you. Because I was hoping to do the same thing with mulder
tonight. So, i'll leave you to your fun. Mulder and I are going back to my
place, becase, A.D. Skinner, you cannotsay a word." With thatm she strode
out of the clearing and left behind Mulder, Skinner, and mrs. scully, who all
werewatching her with open mouths. Suddenly, Mulder ran to catch up with
Scully.
        "We're you kidding?"
        "Am I ever?"

        *Later on at Scully's apartment*
"Scully...didn't you say something about the prudence of saving sex for
marriage?"
    "Screw it."
"Thats a very interesting choice of words..."
    "Just shut up and concentrate."
