Three autopsies, two aeroplane flights and a case report. Not to mention bailing out Mulder to Kersh over why he manages to lose so many flashlights, handguns and sets of handcuffs. Now, though, I'm happy to be sprawled out with Mulder on his couch. An empty pizza box lays on the table, along with a near empty bottle of wine, and Mulder's hands are gently resting in the small of my back. I lay my head on his chest and try to concentrate on the 'Outer Limits' re-run on TV. Without success. Instead I lift my head up and look at Mulder. He is staring contentedly at the TV and I use this opportunity to study his familiar features. It's not o ften that I get a chance like this so I take my time. After about five minutes, Mulder turns his head and looks into my eyes. Show's over and I can tell that he's wondering what I am doing. I lay my head back on his chest and tighten my arms around him. I've been caught. "You okay, Scully?" He asks, a little concerned. I'm suddenly at a loss for words. "I'm fine, Mulder, I'm just a bit tired." I finally manage to say. I look up to reassure him and suddenly stop. His puppy-dog eyes are back and I'm about to drool. Okay now calm, Dana, calm. Mulder suddenly lifts me up off of him and gets up. "I'm going to the bathroom." He says quietly and promptly disappears. Not long afterwards, there is a knock at the door and I wonder who would come visiting at such a late hour. Knowing Mulder, it could be anyone. I cautiously open the door with one hand on my weapon. I am surprised and disappointed to find Diana Fowley standing there. "Is Fox home?" She asks "Yes." I say evenly. I leave the door open and go and sit on the couch. Just as she is walking into the room, Mulder appears. I have to give him credit- he's got impeccable timing. I don't know what I would have done if I'd had to make small talk with her. I despise the woman. "I've got some good news, Fox." She says Mulder raises his eyebrows and looks interested. "It's taken a while, but Skinner and Spender have finally caved in. You've got a job on the X-Files with Spender and I." She finishes excitedly. Wow, finally, back to the X-Files. It'll be odd with Spender and Diana, but maybe they'll do their thing and Mulder and I will do ours. For some reason, Mulder looks non-committal. I finally catch on to why. Singular. Mulder with Diana and Spender. And Me.....? "What about Scully?" Mulder finally asks. "Agent Scully is still assigned to Domestic Terrorism under A. D. Kersh." Diana says with more than a hint of happiness. I watch the two of them with absolute horror. They're splitting us up. "The assignment is yours, if you want it, Fox." Diana finishes as the realisation of her words dawn upon me. She's asking him to make a choice. Her and the X-Files or Me and investigating Domestic Terrorism under A.D. Kersh's stern glare. She's testing hi m to see where his loyalties lie. And I want to rip her head off for it. Of course he's going to go back to her and his life's work. It won't be long before Spender is out of there too. I can tell that Diana wants an answer now and I really don't want to be around when Mulder tells her how much he has missed working with her. I stand up, shove my feet into my shoes, grab my coat and keys and start walking. Mulder catches me up as I reach the elevator and as the doors open, Diana saunters past me and into the elevator. She doesn't exactly look happy. Extremely pissed off, I'd c all it. And that could only mean on thing........... "You didn't think I'd take her up on her offer, did you?" Mulder asks me. I say nothing, but I turn around so that we're face-to-face (Well, face-to-chest, anyway!). "Did you?....Scully, I would never......uuh....I wouldn't, not without you, Scully. Never without you." I know that this is about as close to an 'I love you' as I'm going to get when he's not on drugs, or in a delusional state. He puts his arms around me and draws me in close. We stand like that for a long while, then I pull back and look into his eyes. I am about to melt when he speaks. "Scully? Scully?" ***************** "Scully? Scullly?" Dana Scully groggily opened her eyes and wondered why she was in her pyjamas, in her own bed and not at Mulder's. And why was Mulder sitting by her bedside? "Scully, hurry up and get ready, our flight leaves in two hours." 'Huh?' She thought. Then the realisation hit her. "Mulder, this had better be good. You've just woken me up from one hell of a dream." "Was I there?" Of course, he had to ask. And at this time of the morning, Dana Scully couldn't think of a very good alternative to the truth............ ********************************** The End. Not what you were expecting? Feedback, as always, would be great! Hope you liked it!! No Sequel planned, but I've plans for another fanfic. Maybe towards the end of June (exams, exams, exams, aaaaahhh!!!!).
