Feedback: diamondlife17@hotmail.com Disclaimer: I don't own these characters. Chris Carter created Mulder and Scully, but I don't think he treats them very well. I just like to borrow them from time to time. Summary: He rushed past some, pushing aside others. That's when he heard the scream. NOTE: I don't know about you, but I hated that Mulder missed his son's birth. So I decided to alter Existence so as to allow Mulder this life changing experience. I hope you enjoy. A SMALL MIRACLE By: Marissa Martin As the helicopter hovered overhead, the pilot illuminated the darkness with its lights. "Down there," Mulder yelled to the pilot so that he could hear over the roar of the craft. "I think they could be down there" he reiterated. "Can you sit this thing down somewhere?" The pilot acknowledged him with a nod of his head. *** "You've got to breathe, Dana." Reyes said encouraging the woman whom she was entrusted to act as midwife and coach. She had no idea how to really be a coach -- only what she had seen done on TV. Yet, here she was faced with delivering the baby of someone she barely knew. Scully had been in labor for several hours and coping with the pain was becoming increasingly difficult. "I'm trying. Believe me I'm trying", Scully sighed as the contraction ended. "They're coming about two minutes apart", the other woman in the room announced. "It shouldn't be too much longer," she said to Scully and Reyes as she checked again to see how far Scully had progressed. *** Once on the ground, Mulder jumped down from the helicopter. He ordered the pilot to wait for him while he checked the area and more importantly that they might be taking off with another passenger upon his return. Seeing the vehicles and the people heading towards a certain building led him to believe that in deed this was the place and that Scully and Agent Reyes were in danger. Maybe they already knew this, he thought to himself. He broke into a run to reach Scully before they could accomplish their imperative. He rushed past some, pushing aside others. That's when he heard the scream. *** "Agent Reyes", Scully screamed as the contraction ebbed. "What's happening?" All she knew was the contractions had changed and she was feeling the urge to push. She remembered the game warden checking her progress and that for some reason Agent Reyes doused the woman with boiling water. Out on the porch, Reyes pushed the woman, demanding that she leave, but all the she would say as if nothing else mattered was "This child will be born!" That's when Reyes saw the others and Billy Miles, who should've been dead walking towards their hideout. She was wide-eyed in disbelief at what she was witnessing. A man who was for all intents and purposes dead rising up and walking towards her and all these other people who seemed to have come from nowhere were all headed her way. Then she saw Mulder running towards them – her. Somehow she knew everything was going to work out. Scully's next scream broke her out of her momentary revelry. *** Oh, god I need Mulder, she thought as the next contraction peaked. She was alone and not knowing what was gong on outside didn't make things any easier. The pain that she felt was intense as her body was expending a lot of energy. This was reflected in the sweat running down her brow and her damp hair plastered to her head. At that moment she saw Agent Reyes. The look on her face was puzzling, perhaps one of uncertainty tinged with fear. "Is it time?" Reyes nervously asked. "I felt the urge to push a moment ago." Reyes kneeled to take a look, but not before grabbing a pair of gloves from the first aid kit. Her very gentle exam revealed the surface of a baby's head. At that moment, the army that was outside was now standing in the room. Scully watched them enter including Billy Miles. They stood there staring at her in her most vulnerable and most intimate pose. Another contraction was starting and she tried to will her body not to push -- to delay this baby's birth as long as possible. That's what she wished for, but she got something far better. *** He pushed them aside. He expected resistance, but got none. As he entered the small crowded room, he saw her on the day bed. Agent Reyes at her feet begging her to push and he was immediately at her side. "Scully, I'm here", he said as kneeled beside her. "Mulder... Mulder look at them. They're here to take our baby", she cried out. "No one is going to do anything," Mulder answered back. Scully could feel another contraction building and she tensed her body. Reyes sensed this as she saw a little bit more of the baby. "Push, Dana", she yelled. "You've got to push!" Scully refused to give into her body's urge. "You can't have him", she yelled to the crowd in the room. Mulder could see the fear on his Scully's face. "Scully, listen to me -- look at me." Scully turned to him looking both wild eyed from the pain and from fear. "Trust me. I'm not going to let them take him from us." Mulder knew in his heart that it was promise that he may not be able to keep, but he had to alleviate her fear of giving birth. "I have a feeling that when this is all over, we'll come out of this fine, ok", he said as brushed some of her hair out of her face. "It's safe to let go", he whispered to her. Scully wanted to believe him with all her heart. The love in his eyes told her everything she wanted to know about how he felt about her and their baby. He was the only one she trusted with her life and now their baby's. Mulder's other hand rested on her inner thigh -- massaging her and encouraging her to let go. Now that she felt it building once more she gave into it rather resisting. "Ok, push Dana...push!" Reyes yelled again. She used a lot of energy and force in this push. Mulder encouraged her to keep going. "You can do this, Scully." The contraction ended and although it the baby had yet to emerge, the child was closer than ever to being born. "Ok, that was good, Scully." "We're going to have this little guy soon and..." "Oooooh!!! Scully screamed as it started again. "Push more, Dana," Reyes demanded. Scully grabbed for Mulder's hand as she screamed. The next thing she heard was a baby's cry. Their baby's first cry. *** "Here he is", Reyes said as she placed the wet newborn on Scully's abdomen. "He's really here", Scully said through sobs and laughter. She turned to Mulder as she cradled their son in her arms. His expression was of joy and astonishment. "Hey, little guy", he said touching his son's head for the first time. Their moment was broken when they looked up and saw them leaving. Reyes, who was attending to Scully turned and noticed as well. They never said a word. The next sound they heard were the motors of the vehicles in which they arrived. "Mulder, why?" Scully asked. "I don't have the answer to that right now", Mulder replied looking into her eyes and then at the baby. "Right now they are not a concern, but you and this little one are my only concern." Scully smiled at his words. "Um, Agent Mulder, I'm going to talk to the pilot about all of us getting out of here." Reyes sort of announced as she was headed to the door. Now was the time to allow them some privacy. "Wait." Mulder said. "Just drop the agent bit. I'm not with the Bureau anymore, remember. And second, I want to thank you for making sure he came safely into the world." "I'm glad I could help, but really I think we just got lucky." Reyes smiled back at them. Then she left. "So how you feeling, Scully?" Mulder asked concerned that she needed to get to a hospital sooner rather than later. "I'm fine...ok, I'm not fine, I'm just very tired." Scully answered honestly. The baby began to fuss. "Mulder, would you like to hold him?" "Of course", he replied as she handed him the tiny newborn. Mulder sat facing her on the bed holding the baby. "You know, Scully I don't think I tell you this enough, but you're so beautiful right now." "Uh, uh, Mulder. I know I must look like hell warmed over." "No, seriously. I know you've just come through a tough time of it here, but maybe that's why to me you're more beautiful now than ever." He chose that moment to lean in to kiss her -- a tender kiss full of promise they would remain together as a family. When they parted from the kiss he saw her tears, but he knew they were of happiness. Fini
