The office had smelled like wet smoke. She'd stood
there holding him, but it had been more like
clinging. She knew who'd done this, and she
imagined him standing somewhere nearby, gloating
over his work.

Mulder wasn't reacting. He let her cling to him,
but it had yet to register. She'd led him back to
her apartment, thinking they might be safer there
than at his place. The smell of wet smoke clung
to her clothes and his, and she peeled hers off
while he sat dumbfounded in another room.

When she joined him, he sat as he had stood, silent
and with furrowed, confused brow. She offered him
a drink, he didn't answer.

She sat beside him, close as she could. After awhile
her hand searched for his, and he responded at last,
grasping and clinging. A single sob escaped, and his
head fell to her chest.

She held him, wet smoke and all.
