Disclaimer: I am in no way affliated with Ten Thirteen Productions, and I do not own Mulder or Scully. I just used bits and pieces from various episodes. I am not getting money for this. Hell, I don't think anyone would pay me for this piece of fluff! They would probably pay me to stop writing after this! Anyway, enjoy if you want. Smoke in the Moonlight by Kristy Gonzalez Mulder finished off his bottle of vodka nd orange juice. He leaned across his bed at the Comity Motel and reached into his jacket pocket, retrieving his other bottle of vodka. He bought two just in case the first had little effect. He hardly felt anything, so he took the other one out and opened it, scooping orange juice into it and giving it a good shake. There was nothing on tv except for that strange black and white cop show. He decided to go find Scully. She was acting strangely on this trip, and he was feeling the effects of the alcohol just enough to want to confront her to find out why. He picked up his bottle and walked next door to Scully's room. He knocked on her door. No answer. He knocked louder; maybe she had fallen asleep. There was still no answer. He jiggled the door handle, but it was locked. Shrugging his shoulders, he turned away and headed to the lobby. He walked outside and went out onto the pavement. He saw something move off to the side of the motel. He turned in time to see her red head move behind the building. Mulder followed her quietly. She stood with her back to him by the staircase in the rear of the motel. He slowly walked up behind her and lightly tapped her shoulder. She wheeled around to confront her attacker, nearly screaming from the contact. A cigarette fell from her lips to the ground below. "Mulder? Dammit! What the hell do you think you are doing?" Scully glared at him. "What am I doing? What are you doing? I went to your room to offer you a drink, but you weren't there, so I came outside to get some fresh air. So, here I am walking around putside, when all of a sudden I run into my partner out here in teh moonlight with a cigareete in her mouth. I didn't know you smoked!" Scully sighed. "I don't. I mean sometimes...only on occasion. Anyway, I don't have to explain myself to you." Scully turned away from him and reached into her pocket, pulling out her pack of Morley Reds. She smiled as she flipped a cigarette into her mouth and lit up. She looked at her partner. "Want one Mulder? She smirked. He turned around and took another swig of his drink, handed her the bottle and motioned for her pack. He took it from her, shook one out and lit it, coughing a little Scully's jaw dropped. "You're kidding me! You smoke?" She was stunned. Mulder took a long drag, inhaling the smoke deep into his lungs. Scully watched him in fascination. She had ever seen this side of him before. She liked it. Scully motioned for him to sit on the curb. They both sat, surrounded by darkness and smoke. "So when did you start Mulder? Or is that getting too personal? I can never tell." Mulder laughed. "No, not personal at all. Honestly, I started at Oxford. It was a late night study break to start. It quickly became habit. I kept it up through the BSU and the VCS. I eventually gave it up. The thought of smoking disgusted me one morning and I quit. I haven't smoked for...nine years. Wow." Mulder stopped, took a drag, and exhaled his breath. Scully reached up and ran her fingers through his smoke, watching it swirl around her fingertips. "So, I told you my story. Your turn." Mulder smiled at her. Scully grinned, blowing her own smoke. "I was fourteen." Mulder coughed, "Fourteen? Geez Scully! Weren't you just a little young for it?" "Yeah, I was young. I was also a rebellious teenager. I enjoyed doing things that were not in my nature. Sometimes it drove my parents crazy. Anyway, my mom used to smoke a long time ago. It's a habit that is often picked up by military wives. The husbands smoke so the wives do also. I think it brings them closer in many ways. So, I snuck downstairs one night, went to my Mom's purse and dug out her pack of Morley's. Reds. The strong ones. Anyway, I crept outside and sat on our porch, struck a match, and inhaled my first breath. It was disgusting, but that didn't stop me. I was bent on being rebellious, so I smoked the whole thing. Hated it, but I did it. I gave that up quickly, and so did Mom as soon as she found out what I did. I was in deep trouble from that, but I think she felt guilty for setting a so-called bad example for her children. I never touched a cigarette again until college. My roommate smoked, so I picked it up from her. She introduced me to Morley Lights. They tasted much better. Anyway, I don't do it regularly. I want to die of something else other than lung cancer. But there are times when I think I need one, so I go buy a pack and have one or two then throw the pack away. Simple as that." Scully flicked her cigarette and threw the butt to the ground, crushing the embers under her shoe. "Well Scully, that is quite a story. Better than mine I think." Mulder crushed his cigarette out as well. "Well, I think I am going to head back to the room. Shall I escort you back as well?" "Sure Mulder. After one more." She laughed and Mulder grinned. "Come on Scully! Fight the power! Break the habit!" He held his hand out, indicating that he wanted her to give him her cigarettes. She grinned sheepishly and placed them in his hand. "Okay, okay. Here. Take them. I'm quitting...for now. But don't expect me to be a better person forever!" Mulder laughed and threw the pack in a nearby garbage can, throwing his arm around Scully's shoulders at the same time. "Of course not Scully. I never expect you to be a better person!" Scully elbowed him in the side. "Funny Mulder. That was very funny." And together, they walked back to their rooms. The End
