"What is it again?" Special Agent Dana Scully asked her partner
Fox Mulder.
	"Snakes."
"Yeah, I caught that part. What else?"
"The cult that lived in these woods would tattoo all of them
with a ring of snakes. Especially those getting married."
"Just circles or all kinds of snakes?"
"All kinds. I have pictures but I haven't had any opportunity
to look at them."
	"Could I?"
	"Sure."
As she flipped through them she got curious, "What happened?"
"Well it seems something attacked them, I was getting the
impression of the spirit of a snake or something, and took control of
them. Then the snake would appear killing people and finally the host."
	"Killing anyone?"
"Right, even visitors. With a tattoo I mean."
	"Oh," she said softly.
	"What is it?
She showed him the picture she held of one of the dead people.
It was an exact replica of her own tattoo.
	"Oh, Scully..."
A loud hissing split the air. Their eyes met and they knew no
more.

Scully's breathing was very shallow when Mulder woke up. It hit
him instantly what might have happened. She couldn't have the snake, it
wasn't possible. Now he was disbelieving. It couldn't be right. How
could he have subjected her to this? He should have researched it more,
it was so stupid of him! If it had happened, he would be the first to
die because he wouldn't leave her. If he died, he deserved it. She
stirred.
	"Mulder," she murmured.
	"I'm here," he said.
"What happened?" she sat up slowly, "My back hurts."
He closed his eyes briefly, "Yeah, I was afraid of that."
She noticed the pictures now, "No! Oh, no!"
"Look we can't be sure. There's no evidence that anything
happened. We can't be sure..."
"Oh," she moaned. Her head hung over the loose ground. He
couldn't see her face since her hair was falling forward.
	"What's wrong?"
He didn't even need to wait for her to answer. In the dirt was
an impression.
	"The snake," he whispered.
"You need to get away, Mulder. You need to get far away."
"No, I won't. It said the snake came out. Maybe we could..."
"It's a *spirit*, Mulder. What're you going to do? Shoot it
with a silver bullet? Where would you get that from? It would cost a
lot."
"Your life is worth a lot more that any stupid silver bullet or
money. If that's what he takes to do it, then that's what is going to
happen."
	"It's too dangerous."
"Then we'll both die. How will we know if it is coming out?"
"I'll be able to tell, I'm sure of it."
"Then let's go get that silver bullet."

*Authors note: The snake talks before the slash, Scully after. If no
slash appears, they both say the same thing. Sorry if it gets
confusing.*

They went back to the spot.
	"Mulder, come here."
	"What'd you find?"
	"A charm. A snake's head.\ I don't know what it is."
"Go ahead and stick it in the glove box. We'll look at it
better later."
"OK, let's go. \ I don't see anything else here."
	"Right."
	"I'll drive."
	"OK."
She took a right turn at the next road.
	"Where are you going?"
"To find the owner of the charm. \ Beats me."
"Oh, how do you know who it is?"
	"Don't ask me. We're going anyway. \ I don't."
	"All right. I wasn't arguing."
	"Good. \ Argue."
Some weird was going on with Scully. It was the snake, he was
sure.
	"What's your name?" he asked.
"Elnzar. Serpent of Amazon. \ Dana Scully."
	"You live by the Amazon?"
	"Yes.\ No."
	"Do you like people?"
"No, all are terrible.\ Yes, normal ones. You're an exception."
"So there is more than one charm?"
"Yes, there are three.\ I only saw one."
	"Pretty drive."
	"Yeah, it is."
"How are you connected to the charm?"
"I live off of it.\ Connected? I just found it."
	"Right."
She pulled up to a house and turned to him, "Stay here or I
will kill her now.\ I'll be back in a minute.
	"Do you like ANY humans?"
"This one is all right. Very literal.\ Obviously, Mulder."
The snake answered twice to questions, letting her answer too.
At least it was fair in that respect. He certainly wasn't going to go
after her if it would endanger her life. He thought of whoever might be
in the house. What about them? But how could he save everyone? If only
there was another way. The snake said the charms were how it lived.
Maybe if there was some way to get the charms, the snake would either
follow or die. It seemed to be the only way. When she had the other one
and was asleep, he could get some type of bottle that couldn't be
penetrated. Then he could have the snake at his mercy. The thought made
him giddy. Scully emerged, the charm dangling from her hand.
	"You go it?"
"Yes, it was easy\ It was horrible."
"Are you going to get the other now?"
"Yes, we are.\ It seems like it."
The threat was issued again, an hour later.
"Do you mind if I come over?"
	"Why?"
	"To visit. Is that unusual?"
	"I'm not sure.\ Not really."
	"So I can?"
	"Why not?\ Sure!"
                            <><><><><><><><><><>

	*Scully's apartment
	10:00 p.m.
	Sunday*

Scully went to sleep early. Mulder found the charms easily and
put them in the bottle. He shook her shoulder.
	"What?"
	"What's missing?"
"The charms! You putrid human being!\ Be careful!"
	"Yeah, that's me."
"Give them to me or I will kill her.\ Don't!"
"If you kill her you will never get the charms."
	"You!\ Mulder..."
	"So what's your choice?"
"There is only one possibility. Me to enter the bottle of
charms.\ That's a good idea."
Scully collapsed to the floor as the snake emerged. It came
forward.
	"Open the bottle."
"Before I do, is she OK?"
"She will wake shortly. Do it!"
Mulder opened it. The snake, being small was fitting perfectly.
All of a sudden the bottle disintegrated. The snake lay by Scully with
the charms around it's neck, "So trusting are you humans. Now you both
are mine for you would give your life for this human. Touching. Now I
have the charms. I am all powerful Elnzar, the Great Serpent of the
Amazon!"
	"What are you planning now?"
"The complete control of the world! Beginning with your own
president. Two agents such as yourselves should be able to gain access."
Mulder didn't bother arguing that it wouldn't be so easy. He
had to either buy time until Scully woke up or figure out a way to get
everything done before she did. The results could be varied. Normally
levelheaded, waking to a scene like this could unnerve her, causing
unnecessary confusion. Then again with her rock-solid logic, they just
might win. But what should he choose? How could he make a decision like
that? It could mean the whole world! But it looked as if his decision
was being made for him. Scully was stirring. Her eyes opened. He leaned
forward catching her gaze and holding it. In his eyes she read
confusion, uncertainty; a mini battle was being raged there, but there
also was a light of determination. If the cards were played right, she
was sure they would end up with the 300 pinochle.
"You want us to access the White House and get you to the
president?"
"Absolutely," Elnzar's attention was turned to Scully, who
moved.
"Now!" shouted a voice in Mulder's head. He drew the gun loaded
with the silver bullet. If he missed... No, it wouldn't happen. The
apartment reverberated with the sound. Scully squeezed her eyes shut,
letting her head sag. She could only hope... A thought struck Mulder.
Elnzar had been *in front* of Scully when he shot. Had he missed? Had
he shot *Scully* instead? Elnzar still lay there.
"You are very clever human. Very clever. But you will not live
to tell the tale."
Elnzar slithered forward. Mulder sat still. Scully still hadn't
moved.
	"Scully!"
"You're a bad shot for someone so talented. Kill your own
partner. That will sound very good on the records. "Killed partner and
helped assassinate the President of the United States." How pleasing to
the ear. Murderer. I bet if your partner were alive she'd want to
shrink back from you. Such a revolting being. Who would ever want to be
around you? What woman would ever want to have your name?"
Mulder looked at his fists and was surprised at how tightly
they were clenched. This snake had caused him to destroy the only
important thing left for him in life. How may times had she saved his
life? Sure he'd saved hers but she had saved more than just his life,
she had saved his very *being*. And this was how he repaid her?
	"You..."
"Please, no swearing. it is damaging to the soul."
"He's yanking your chain, Mulder," Scully was standing
now, "Let the silver do its job."
	"Humans! Humans..."
	Elnzar suddenly disappeared.
	"What happened?" Mulder asked.
"I think I blacked out for a while. Mulder what he said wasn't
true at all."
	Mulder shrugged.
"Anyway, it's over. I killed two people"
	"That's not your fault."
"How can you say that? If I had only thought..."
"Look, if it's anyone's fault it's my fault."
	"No!"
"Yes, he said firmly, "This has saved countless other lives."
Scully was really upset now. She had good reason to be. He
pulled her to him stroking her hair back from her face. Now the tears
came.
	"I, I don't know."
"Look, there's nothing to worry about. It's over now."
She relaxed against him. Mulder was right, it was over.
                           <><><><><><><><><><>
The evidence was filed away as any other. No extra security
was placed. So one day, it was gone.

	*Nauta, Brazil

	One month later*

The postman did his daily rounds. One day as he loaded his
truck he saw a small package with an address he had never seen before
on it. The return address read somewhere in Chicago, IL. Who would be
sending something from there? It wasn't heavy either.
He pulled up at the address. It was an empty field. Oh, well.
He stuck it in a plastic bag and set it down, driving away.
Inside the box a silver bullet appeared beside three charms.
Over? Definitely not. It was only the beginning.
