Scully's apartment

7:00 p.m.

"Happy Birthday Scully," he said handing her the fuzzy bear with a
small rectangular box attached.

"What's this?"

"Well, open it up and find out," he answered with a suppressed grin.

She slowly pulled the bow away and opened the box, which revealed a
small pair of sapphire earrings. "Oh Mulder, these are beautiful.
Thank you so much". She reached over to hug him and placed a small
kiss on his cheek.

"You are welcome."

She had insisted he come over for dinner after work, neither of them
knowing the snow was beginning to accumulate at a rapid pace. He
looked over to the fireplace and realized it needed another log. He
stood and stretched his long, lanky form from its resting position.
"Looks like we need another log."

"I'll put one on. Sit down...you are company."

"No it's okay, Scully. I got it." While crossing the room, she was too
late to warm him of the small toy car left by Matthew over last
weekend's visit. "Mul..." CRASH! "Oh God...Mulder are you okay?" she
asked rushing to his side to examine him for injuries.

She noted he could not seem to move and had a glazed look of agony and
pain on his face. "Mulder? Damn Mulder, answer me!"

"'M okay Scully. Just got the wind knocked out of me." He attempted to
sit up, but realized only then that the pain was not from being able
to catch his breath, but his wrist was throbbing with pain. "Uh...I
can't move my wrist."

"Try to move your thumb." With much effort, but little results due to
the pain, she realized it was time to take him to the hospital.
"Mulder, I need to take you to have this x-rayed. It's probably
broken."

"Nooooo. I'm *not* going to a hospital Scully. Can't you fix with
something here?" he whined.

"Mulder, even if I did have everything, and I don't; I could not even
x-ray your wrist to see if it's broken. We need to take you to the
hospital."

Suddenly resigned to the fact he was not getting out of this one, he
stood with her assistance. She helped him into his jacket and zipped
it up and then proceeded to do the same with her own, closing the
fireplace doors before they left.

Once outside, she realized she was going to have to scrape snow and
ice off her vehicle before she could drive anywhere. "Come on, I'll
start the car and you can get warm." He didn't argue and went directly
to the car door. As he placed his good arm on the door frame to seat
himself, it slipped and he fell on the ground. "Ouch!"

"I can't take you anywhere," she muttered, helping him stand up and
get situated in the car. She finished cleaning off the windows and
started the drive to the hospital.

Georgetown Memorial Hospital Emergency Room

9:15 p.m.

"Hello Mr. Mulder, I am Dr. Geragos. I hear you had a little mishap
this evening? Can you tell me what happened?"

While glaring at Scully, he spoke, "Well doctor, it seems as if my
friend here had a little something on her floor and forgot to tell me.
In any case, to make a long story short...I tripped on a toy car and
hurt my wrist...and here I am. So how long before I can get sprung
from this joint?"

The doctor smiled at his impatience. "Well, x-ray is a little backed
up right now, but it shouldn't be more than another 30 minutes I would
say. Let me call them and see right now. I'll be right back."

"Thanks doc, I appreciate that." After about 10 minutes, the doctor
returned and gave Mulder the good news that it looked like he could be
called in next. Within the hour, his arm was in a stretch splint with
instructions from the doctor to use the RICE method to help heal his
strained wrist and to take off two weeks from field time. Giving his
assurance to the doctor that he would follow all instructions, they
were allowed to sign him out and leave.

"Scully, I didn't want to sound dumb or anything, but what exactly
*is* the RICE method?"

"Uh, that means rest, ice, compression and elevation." "Oh...thank
you, Dr. Scully," he smiled widely. She quickly noticed his earlier
foul mood had long since disappeared and hoped he did not blame her
for his current state. "Mulder, earlier...I'm sorry I didn't tell you
in time."

"Really, it's okay Scully. Besides...now you have to give me a present
on *your* birthday." She reached over the car seat and whispered close
to his ear. "What kind of a present would you like on *my* birthday
Mulder?" He turned to look at her with a knowing grin. "Ah...ah...ah.
You will find out soon enough."

Scully's apartment

10:30 p.m.

Once they had arrived back at her apartment and settled in, she stoked
the fireplace with another log and the blaze soon regained it's
earlier brightness. "Mulder do you want a glass of iced tea?"

"Sure. Could you also put some ice in that bag of yours and bring it
in when you come. My wrist is starting to hurt like crazy."

She was instantly at his side. "Your medication wearing off? Dr.
Geragos gave me some samples before we left. I can get you one," she
said with worry.

"Scully, I'll be fine. Please go get the tea and bag of ice."

When she returned to the living room, she found he had removed his
shoes and was laying on his good side asleep. She smiled down at him,
placing a gentle kiss on his lips and covered him with the throw from
the back of the couch. "I guess it will be tomorrow before you can
tell me what I was supposed to give you for *my* birthday." However,
she walked away before hearing his quiet response. "You gave me *you*
for your birthday," he murmured and fell into a deep sleep.
