Author's Notes: Thank you to my wonderful beta Tracy! Thank your also, Ro, I'm glad if finally wrote one you could preview for me! Archieve: Just let me know where! Somtimes by Diana Fowley "Mulder, knock it off," Scully warned. Mulder immediately withdrew the hand that was tapping her and leaned over his desk and whispered, "But I'm bored...." His whisper cause a few heads in the quite lecture hall to turn. Noticing this, Scully pulled out a pen and a sheet of paper in order to respond to her partner's persistent whining. When the lecturer turned away she slipped the paper behind her onto Mulder's desk. She caught the mischievous glimmer in his eye as he opened her note, keeping the rustling to a minimum so as not to draw more attention to them. He read: Mulder, You know why we're here. We've been over this a thousand times. These team building workshops are very important to the FBI and therefore should be very important to us, even if they are unnecessary in our case. Besides, in the seven years we have been working together we have never attended one! So, be quiet and listen. You never know, you may learn something. Mulder tried to keep from laughing at his partner's attempt at optimism. He knew that she hated this kind of thing as much as he did. He responded to her note, then dropped it over her shoulder and into her lap. She retrieved the note and read: I know why the FBI wants us here. I know all the reasons we should be here, but do you really want to be here? How much more can we learn about each other? I think I know almost everything about you there is to know. And I've stopped ditching you for the most part, so we don't need anymore work on our communication skills. Mulder P.S. Did you ever pass notes in Jr. High? One that had those silly "Do you like me? Check Yes or NO," boxes on them? Scully resisted the urge to laugh. This lecture was incredibly boring and she really doubted that she and Mulder would learn anything new about each other. She scribbled her next message and tossed it behind her. It landed on Mulder's desk. Mulder, I always drew a new box and checked maybe. She heard Mulder laugh out loud. Luckily, it was covered by a shuffling noise as each pair of partners were turning to face each other. Scully quickly turned her desk to face Mulder. She then turned her attention back to the speaker. "I know many of you feel that there is not much more you can learn about your partner, but I believe there is always more to learn. For instance, do you really know exactly how you feel about your partner? Have you ever taken any time to examine those emotions? Have you ever taken an opportunity to express those emotions? Do you know how your partner feels about you? Has he or she ever expressed his or her emotions to you? In most cases I would assume the answer is no. In occupations such as ours, with a high chance of mortality, it is easier to keep out emotions bottled up. It is easier to build emotional barriers to protect or selves from the pain if something were to happen to our partner. But, can we really know someone if we don't ever examine how we feel about them? Can you really trust your partner completely if you refuse to trust them with your emotions? Now, I know it is very hard to express your feelings in your own words. So, in this exercise you will not be using your words. Here is your assignment. I want you to finds lyrics to the song that best describes how you see your partner. Also, find a song that best describes your relationship with each other. Be sure to write them down and meet back here in an hour. Be ready to express these emotions to your partner. Good luck." In precisely an hour Scully returned to find Mulder already in the room, paper in hand waiting. "Hey, Scully," he said as she took her seat across from him. "Hey," she returned. "How'd it go?" "Umm.." Mulder began. "It was actually pretty easy for me....I already have a song that I think describes you pretty well, I just had to find the lyrics....What about you?" "Same here," Scully said, a small smile pulling at her lips. "Okay," the speaker began. "Now that we are all assembled, let's get started. Start with the song describing how you feel about your partner, once you've discussed that, move onto your next selections. Good luck, and you are free to leave when you have finished your discussions." Mulder passed his lyrics toward Scully but her hand on his stopped his progress, "Mulder," she began. "I..." He covered their hands with his other hand. "I know," he said. Then, "Maybe we are going to learn a few new things about each other after all...disclose a few emotions that we have yet to put into words." Scully smiled at his understanding and gave his hand a squeeze before releasing it. "I think maybe we should open an X-file on your psychic ability," she said with a smile. He returned her smile and shook his head, "It's easy when we're thinking the same thing." Hesitantly they exchanged papers and began to read. On Mulder's paper, Scully found: Smooth by Santana with Rob Thomas Man it's a hot one Like seven inches from the midday sun I hear your whisper and your words melt everyone But you stay so cool My Munequita, my Spanish Harlem Mona Lisa You're my reason for reason The step in my groove And if you said this life ain't good enough I would give my world to lift you up I'd change my life to better suit your mood Cause you're so smooth And it's just like the ocean under the moon Well that's the same as the emotion that I get from you You got the kind of lovin' that could be so smooth Give me your heart make it real Or else forget about it. Well I'll tell you one thing If you would leave it be a crying shame In every breath and every word I hear your name calling me out Out from the barrio, you hear my rhythm on your radio You feel the turning of the world so soft and slow Turning you round and round And if you said this life ain't good enough I would give my world to lift you up I'd change my life to better suit your mood Cause you're so smooth And it's just like the ocean under the moon Well that's the same as the emotion that I get from you You got the kind of lovin' that could be so smooth Give me your heart make it real Or else forget about it. On Scully's paper, Mulder found: Building a Mystery by Sarah McLauglin You come out at night, that's when the energy comes And the dark side's light, and the vampires roam. You strut your astor wear, and your suicide poem And a cross from a faith that died before Jesus came. You're building a mystery You live in a church where you sleep with voodoo dolls And you won't give up the search for the ghosts in the halls You wear sandals in the snow and a smile that won't wash away Can you look out the window without your shadow getting in the way? You're so beautiful with an edge and charming And so careful when I'm in your arms. Because you're working building a mystery Holding on, and holding in. Yeah you're working building a mystery and choosing so carefully. You wake up screaming aloud, a prayer from your secret god You feed off our fears, and hold back your tears... oh, You give us a tantrum, and a know-it-all grin Just when we need one when the evening's thin. You're a beautiful, a beautiful, fucked up man. You're setting up your razor wire shrine. Because you're working building a mystery Holding on, and holding in. Yeah you're working building a mystery and choosing so carefully. Because you're working building a mystery Holding on, and holding in. Yeah you're working building a mystery and choosing so carefully. Because you're working building a mystery Holding on, and holding in. Yeah you're working building a mystery and choosing so carefully. You're building a mystery. When they had finished reading, they hesitantly met each other's eyes. Neither spoke for along time, trying to comprehend the meaning of the lyrics before them. What emotions were they trying to reveal. Scully broke the eye contact and silence first. "So, Mulder," she said, clearing her throat. "What's your favorite line, the one that best describes me?" He smiled and leaned in so he could look over her shoulder. "I have a few," he said with a smile. "'You're my reason for reason' is pretty dead on." His smile faded as he continued, "But I think my favorite is, 'And if you said this life ain't good enough, I would give my world to lift you up'. You know that's true, right?" He looked into his eyes and continued. "You know I would do anything you asked of me. I would do anything for you Scully." She smiled and reached across the table and pulled his hand to her. She carefully examined it before she entwined her fingers with his. "Yes," she said, once again meeting his gaze. "I think I've always know that." They examined each other for a while longer, then Mulder said, "What about you?" "Hmm?" Scully said as his voice brought her back to the present. "What's your favorite line?" "Oh," she said. He could see a blush creeping to her face as she examined the lyrics.. She tried to pull her hand away but he would not release his prize. When she realized she was stuck she looked at him and saw humor in eyes. "It better not be the part about sleeping with voodoo dolls. You know I gave that up years ago." She laughed and once again relaxed her hand into his. "Actually, the section that goes. 'You wake up screaming aloud, a prayer from your secret god, You feed off our fears, and hold back your tears... oh, You give us a tantrum, and a know-it-all grin, Just when we need one when the evening's thin.' But the line that made me decdie that this song was about you is this one," she said pointing at the paper. "The one that says 'You're a beautiful, a beautiful, fucked up man.'" "I don't know quite how to take that Scully." "Take it as a compliment. Reassurance that I love everything about you, including all of your demons." "Scully, I..." Realizing what she had just admitted too, she again tried to pull her had away from Mulder. This time he didn't resist. "Let's...let's go on to the next song." Mulder examined her for a while before he agreed. They once again exchanged papers. Before they began reading Mulder said, "Scully, I just want you to know that I think this exercise was a good idea. I think that there are many things that have gone unsaid between us for too long." Scully nodded in agreement and began to read the words that Mulder and chosen for her to see: Feels Like Forever by Joe Cocker Saw you That was all I had to see Wanted you Had have you next to me From that moment I knew that you'd be all I'd ever need And there's a place inside my heart Nobody's touched before And when I found you I found all that I'd been searching for You turned my world around All I know Is it feels like forever All I know Is I love the way it feels All I see Is how good we are together And I never want to see it slip away I'll never let you go It's all I know Hold me Love is here for us to live It's telling me, Let's put our hearts in the hand of fate. When Mulder finished reading the lyrics, he looked up and saw that Scully was desperately trying to brush the tears out of her eyes. He caught her face in his hands and brushed away the few remaining ones with his thumbs. "Mulder," she began. "I don't know what to say..." "It's hard. I know. Would it be easier if I passed you a note with boxes for you to check?" Mulder asked with a grin on his face. Scully gave him a full grin and wiped a the remaining tears from her eyes. "Maybe," she admitted. Then she grew serious. "Mulder, I..." He stopped her with a gentle finger on her lips. "Scully, do you want to get out of here?" "Mulder," she began to protest. "I think we need to talk about this... " "I agree," he said. She raised an eyebrow, silently asking for clarification. He continued, "We do need to talk about this, but right now, I really need to kiss you. So, unless you want me to do this in front of half the FBI, I suggest we take this to a more private location." She broke his gaze and bowed her head. With finger under her chin, he raised her face back to his. "I know, Scully, that you want this to happen. I understand that you're scared and you want to take this slow. I do to. It's just...I just never thought you felt the same way. Now that I know you want this too, I can't stand to wait one second longer." She smiled, "Let's get out of here, Mulder." "You lead, Scully. You know I'll follow you anywhere." The End.
