I'll skip straight to the point this time. This is the continuation
of the All Things series (gotta come up with a name for the series).
I suggest you read that before you read this. Now, before your death
certificate reads - Cause of Death : Boredome, I'll get to the disclaimer.
Fox and Samantha Mulder, and Dana Scully belong to a guy named Chris
Carter who apparently lives in Canada. Any and all songs used in
this story do not belong to me. No copywrite infringment is intended in
any case. All of the songs are listed in the story, but I'll list them
at the end for your convenience.

                        Songs Say It All

                        By Kathryn Miller

J. Edgar Hoover Building
Washington D.C
Novmber 21, 1997

Mulder and Scully were having an exceedingly slow day at the office.
So slow, in fact, that they had taken the opportunity to drive home
during lunch to collect songs that they thought relevant to their
everyday environment. Mulder had suggested the idea, and, for lack of
anything batter to do, Scully had agreed. As they were about to leave,
Scully had thrown in an extra catch, they were only allowed three songs
each and the person to come up with the best song won. Because it became a
contest, things got interesting. They hurried home, threw open every
dwarer in search of the *perfect* song, hurried back to work, and began.
"There is no way that you are going to win, Mulder," Scully said
with the upmost confidence.
"Oh, you say that now. Wait until you hear what I have in store for
you," Mulder returned.
"Well, who goes first?" Scully asked. "Because I am going to win, I
will be very generous and let you."
"You're very kind. I will go first, but it won't improve your
chances."
    "Whatever. What excactly is this?"
"This is a very good song by the Moody Blues entitled,
appropriately, 'I Know You're Out There Somewhere.'" Mulder plopped the CD
into the player he had brought from home and punched play.

I know you're out there somewhere,
    Somewhere, somewhere.
I know I'll find you somehow,
And somehow I'll return again to you.

    The mist is lifting slowly,
I can see the way ahead.
And I've left behind the streets that once inspired my life.
And the strength of the emotion,
Is like thunder in the air.
Cause the promise that we made each other, haunts me 'till the end.

I know you're out there somewhere,
    Somwhere, somewhere,
Somewhere you can hear my voice.
I know I'll find you somehow,
    Somehow, Somehow.
Somehow, I'll return again to you.

    The secret of your beauty,
And the mystery of your soul,
I've been searching for in every one I meet
And the times I've been mistaken,
    It's impossible to say.
And the grass is growing underneath our feet.

I know you're out there somewhere,
    Somewhere, somewhere.
I know you're out there somewhere,
Somewhere you can hear my voice.
I know I'll find you somehow,
    Somehow, somehow.
I know I'll find you somehow,
Somehow I'll return again to you.

"Uh, Mulder?" Scully said, looking up form her desk.
"Yes, Scully?" Mulder replied, eyeing his partner warily.
    "Isn't this your theme song?"
    "What makes you think that?"
" 'I know you're out there somewhere?' Come on, Mulder..."
"Well, okay. It was, but you haven't heard the best of it yet."

You see I know you're out there somewhere.
Oh yes, I know you're out there somewhere.

You see I know I'll find you somehow.
Oh yes, I know I'll find you somehow.

    The words that I remeber,
From my childhood still are ture.
There are none so blind as though who do not see.
And to those who lack the courage,
They say it's dangerous to try.
They just don't know that love eternal will not be denied.

I know you're out there somewhere,
    Somewhere, somewhere.
I know you're out there somewhere,
Somewhere you can hear my voice.
I know I'll find you somehow,
    Somehow, somehow.
I know I'll find you somehow,
Somehow I'll return again to you.

"I have to admit, Mulder, this is a good song." Scully admitted
ruefully.
    "Give up?"
    "You wish."

Yes, I know it's going to happen
(I know it's going to happen)
I can feel you getting near
    (Feel you getting near)
I can see the fever turning to the fountain of our youth

And if you wake up wondering
    (If you wake up wondering)
In the darkness I'll be there
    (You know I'll be there.)
I'll put my arms around and protect with the truth.

I know you're out there somewhere,
    Somewhere, somewhere.
I know you're out there somewhere,
Somewhere you can hear my voice.
I know I'll find you somehow,
    Somehow, somehow.
I know I'll find you somehow,
Somehow I'll return again to you.

"Okay," Mulder said in his announcer voice, "half of round one is
over. What does Dr. Scully have in store for us?"
"Well, Agent Mulder, I have a very nice song that is just right for
you. It is, drum roll please, 'The Living Years' by Mike and the Mechanics.
Please be so kind as to omit the final stanza due to your lack of both a
child and a wife...I think."
"Very funny, ha ha. Okay, roll 'em"

Every generation, blames the one before.
And all of their frustrations, come beating on your door.
I know that I'm a prisoner to all my father has so dear.
I know that I'm a hostage to all his hopes and fears,
I just wish I could have told him in the living years.

All crumpled bits of paper, filled with imperfect thoughts,
Still to converstions, I'm afraid that's all we've got.
You say you just don't see it, you say it's perfect sense,
We just can't get aggreement in this present tense.
We don't talk a different language, talking in defense.

Say it loud, say it clear.
You can miss him as well as you hear.
It's too late, when we die,
To admit we don't see eye to eye.

So we open up a quarrel, between the present and the past,
We only sacrifice the future. It's the bitterness that lasts.
So don't hail to the fortunes, sometimes see his fate.
It may have a new prespective on a different day.
So if you don't give up and don't give in, you just might be okay.

Say it loud, say it clear.
You can miss him as well as you hear.
It's too late, when we die,
To admit we don't see eye to eye.

I wasn't there the morning, when my father passed away,
I didn't get to tell him, all of the things I had to say.
I think I caught his spirit, later that same year,
I'm sure I heard his echo in my baby's new born tears.
I just wish I could have told him in the living years.

Say it loud, say it clear.
You can miss him as well as you hear.
It's too late, when we die,
To admit we don't see eye to eye.

"What do you think? You didn't say a thing throughout the whole
song," Scully inquired as Mulder simply stared at the CD player.
"That's very true of me, but..." He hesitated, snapping out of the
trance, "It can't beat mine."
    "Which is...?"
"A very lovely piece, by Phil Collins. The name of the song, 'Both
Sides of the Story.'"
    "Interesting. Lets go."
Mulder mosied over to the player, removed Scully's CD, handed it to
her and placed his own into the ornery machine that was as old as
Scully's godson. "Here we go!"

Find yourself in the gutter, in a lonely part of town.
Where death waits in the drakness with a weapon,
    To cut some stranger down.
Sleepin' with an empty bottle he's sad and empty hearted man.
All he needs is a job, and a little respect,
So ge can get out while he can.

We always need to hear both sides of the story.

"Ladies and gentlmen," Mulder interupted, "Our government!"
"Shut up. I can't here it."

A neighborhood peace is shattered, it's the middle of the night.
Young faces hide in the shadows,
And watch their mother and father fight.
He says she's been unfaithful, she says her love for him has gone.
While the brother shruggs to his sister, and says,
'Looks like it's just you and me from now on,'

We always need to hear both sides of the story.

And the lights are all on, the world is watching now.
People looking for truth, we must not fail them now.
Be sure, before we close our eyes, don't walk away from here.
'Till you hear both sides of the story.

"We're looking for the truth," Scully stated plainly.
"Why else do you think I chose this song?"
"They sure do say it all."
    "What?"
    "Songs."
    "Oh."

    Here we are all gathered,
In what seems to be the center of the storm.
Neighbors, once friendly, now standing each side,
Of the line that has been drawn.
They've been fighting here for years,
But now there's killing on the street.
While small coffins are lined up sadly, now united in defeat.

We alwayes need to hear both sides of the story.

And the lights are all on, the world is watching now.
People looking for truth, we must not fail them now.
Be sure, before you close your eyes, don't walk away form here.
'Till you hear both sides of the story.

White man turns the corner, finds himself within a different world.
Getto kid grabs his shoulder, throws him up against the wall.
He says, 'Would you respect me, if I didn't have this gun?
Cause without it, I don't get it, and that's why I carry one.'

We always need to hear both sides of the story.

"We have guns too. You're not a getto kid, are you Scully?" Mulder
asked while rummaging through his bag of wonders and producing yet
another CD.
    "No, are you?" she asked.
"Last time I checked, no. What's next Scully?"
"The only song to ever be named after a poster."
"'I Believe' by Blessid Union of Souls?"
"You guessed it. Basically it doesn't really have anything to do
with our line of work, but the first lines are truly great. I suppose
they could have to do with us until the chorus."
    "Okay. And away we go."

Walk blindly to the light, and reachout for his hand.
Don't ask any questions and don't try to understand.
Open up your mind and then open up your heart,
And you will see that you and me are very far apart.

'Cause I believe, that love is the answer,
I believe, that love will find a way.

Violence is spread world-wide, and there's familes on the street.
We sell drugs to children now, oh, why can't we just see.
That all do is eliminate our future, with the things we do today.
Money is our encintive now, so that makes it okay.

But I believe, that love is the answer.
I believe, that love will find a way.
I believe that love is the asnwer.
I believe, love will find a way.

"Hey, guys!" Samantha Mulder greeted happily, barging into the
office.
"Hey, Sam." Mulder and Scully greeted in unison.
"May I ask why you don't appear to be doing real work?" Sam asked,
placing herself in a chair by Scully's desk.
    "Why aren't you?" Mulder returned.
"Hush you two, he's singing again." Scully said waving her hands
frantially.
"If you count musical moaning as singing."
    "Shut up, Mulder."

I've been seeing Lesal for a little over a year.
She says she never been more happy, but Lesal lives in fear.
Cause one day Daddy's going to find that she's in love,
With a brother from the street.
Oh how he would loose his temper, she's still here with me.
She believes that love will see it through, and they will understand.
He'll see me as a person, and not just a black man.

But I believe, that love is the answer.
I believe that love will find a way...

"What are you two doing. Not work I hope. If it is than I don't
know why I couldn't work for the FBI." Samantha asked.
"Actually, it was your brother's idea. We weren't busy, so we had a
'find the song that closely resembles our work life.' contest" Dana answered.
    "Intersting. Who's winning?"
    "I am." They answered simultaniously.
"I see. Why don't I be the judge of that. What have you listened
to?"
Scully ran off a list and Samatha nodded, thinking hard.
"Gee, that's really hard to say. Fox gets a lot of points for 'I
Know You're Out There Somewhere,' but Dana, you score about as much for
'The Living Years.' Why don't we call it a tie and whoever has the best
next song, wins."
"Okay. I agree, what about you Mulder?"
"Fine, but for the record, let it be known that I would have won."
    "Keep telling yourself that, Mulder."
"Anyway, next up on the song list, the lovely Phil yet again singing
none other than the excellent song, 'We Wait and We Wonder.'"
"We like alliteration don't we Mulder?"
"Who's we? I do not have spilt personalities. Yes I do. No I
don't. Yes I do. No..."
Meanwhile, while Mulder carried on a heated debat with himself,
Scully selected number eleven on the CD player for him and settled back into
her chair.

We stand, hang our heads, disbelieving,
Them not knowing, how could such a thing be wrong.
We wonder, just what they must be thinking,
To take a life of one so young.

So tell me, when will it be over now, how soon?
How far must they go to proove to you?

We wait and we wonder how this happened.
Killing the old, the innocent, the young.
While sons follow in father's footsteps, not understanding,
that what they do could be somehow be so wrong.

So tell me, when will it be over now, how soon?
How for must they go, to prove to you?

So we wait and we'll wonder.

"A little commentary on life, Mulder?"
"You bet, Scully. Never can pass up an opportunity to remind you
just how much life is depressing in these times."
"Great song, Fox. I'll have to borrow this CD from you sometime."
"Can I say something?" Scully asked.
"If you must." Mulder said, letting out a sarcastic sigh.
"How kind. Anyway, has anyone else noticed that the words 'believe'
and 'somehow' keep resurfacing?"
"Yeah, I have," Sam pitched in. "Ooh, great guitars!"
"Aren't they though? Here comes more words." Mulder said, hushing
the women.

No regrets, no forgiveness, no compassion,
Oh, these brave heroes only know to hit and run.
Slowly my sadness turns to rage, and we wonder,
How can these scars ever heal, when all is said and done?

So tell me, when will it be over now, how soon?
How many tears must fall to prove to you?

Please tell me, when will it be over now, how soon?
How far must they go to prove to you?

So we wait and we wonder.

"Yes, well, that's it then." Mulder said, rising to remove his CD
form the player.
"I don't know, Dana, you're going to be hard-pressed to beat that."
"I can, believe me Sam, I can."
    "Question is, will you?"
"Yes, Mulder, especially with this next song that I have up my
sleeve."
    "Which is?" Mulder inquired.
"'Time After Time' by Cindi Lauper. And may I add that this song
has to do with us as partners and the last four and a half years working
with 'Spooky' Mulder."
    "Thanks."
"Your welcome. Now here it is..."

Lying in my bed I hear the clock tick and think of you.
Caught up in circles, confusion is nothing new.
Flashback - warm nights - almost left behind.
    Suitcases of memories, time after...

Sometimes you picture me, I'm walking too far ahead.
You're calling to me, I can't hear what you've said.
Then you say, 'Go slow, I'll fall behind.'
    The second hand unwinds.

If you're lost you can look and you will find me,
    Time after time.
If you fall I will catch you, I'll be waiting,
    Time after time.

If you're lost, you can look and you will find me,
    Time after time.
If you fall I will catch you, I'll be waiting,
    Time after time.

After my picture fades, and darkness has turned to grey,
Watching through windows you're wondering if I'm okay.
    Secrets, stolen from deep inside.
The rdrum beats out of time.

If you're lost you can look and you will find me,
    Time after time.
If you fall I will catch, I'll be waiting,
    Time after time.

Then you say, 'Go slow, I'll fall behind.'
    The second hand unwinds,

If you're lost you can look and you will find me,
    Time after time.
If you fall I will catch you, I'll be waiting,
    Time after time.

If you're lost you can look and you will find me,
    Time after time.
If you fall I will catch you, I'll be waiting,
    Time after time.

    Time after time...

"Now that the song is done, the judge will take a brief recess and
think over the songs. Let the contestants know, though, that there will
be no prejudice toward anyone, brother or friend." Sam stated, actually
thinking over the songs as she had said.
"I'm going to win." Mulder said, looking strait into Scully's blue
eyes.
"Right, just like Green Bay beat Dallas, right?"
"They never had a chance, unfortunately."
    "My point exactly."
    "Hey..."
"You walked right into it, Mulder, what can I say?"
    "That you lost?"
    "What *else* can I say?"
"That if you loose you take me to dinner, it is five o'clock."
"I will say that. The same goes for you, though."
    "Agreed. How's it going, Sam?"
"The judge has reached a difficult descision."
"Okay, let's here it. Tell me I beat Scully."
"The runner up was my beloved brother bec..."
    "Hey!"
"Would you hold on and let me explain."
    "Fine."
"Okay, the reason you lost is because, though the song had
everything to do with today in general it didn't have enough to do with
you and Dana and the X-Files. Whereas, Dana's song had everything to do
with your partnership, so, Mulder where are you taking us for dinner?"
    "Who's we?"
    "Well, I am your sister."
    "Okay, come on guys."
Mulder, Scully, and Sam got up out of thier chairs, slipped their
coats on and left the office. On the way to the restraunt, Scully
couldn't help but gloat a little. After all, she was sitting right next
to the very man that had claimed that he would beat her. For once there
was an advantage to sitting in the front seat with him.
"So Mulder. What were you saying about winning?"
"Couldn't stand it could you, Scully?"
    "What?"
    "Gloating."
"Well, if you had played your cards, or songs rather, right than perhaps
you would have won."
    "What do you mean?"
"Had you saved 'I Know You're Out There Somewhere' last you would
have ensured a victory."
"Oh, okay, so you blame my coaching?"
    "Exactly."
    "I see. Thanks Scully."
    "What are partners for?"
    "Dinner."
    "Nice try. Keep driving."
    "Yes, mein Fuhrer."

                                 The End

Well, there it was. I hope you got some laughs out of it. I
lied when I said that the next story had to do with the formation of M&S
as a romantic couple. I couldn't resist, though. I kept finding all
these songs that fit the show. I would most appreciate comments and
flames too. Living with three brothers makes you pretty much immune to
flames.
The songs, as promised, are as follows :

I Know You're Out There Somewhere - The Moody Blues
The Living Years - Mike and the Mechanics
Both Sides of the Story - Phil Collins
I Believe - Blessid Union of Souls
We Wait and We Wonder - Phil Collins
Time After Time - Cindi Lauper

For anyone who is interested, I am about to begin to write a major story
that is going to be the X-Files meets Pride and Prejudice. I watched
the mini-series on A&E and fell in love with it. Now I am going to
place Scully as Lizzy, Margaret as Mrs. Bennet (but not half as silly),
Melissa as Jane, Bill Scully as Mr. Bennet, and I am going to make up poeple
for Mary, Kitty, and Lydia. The others are Mulder as Mr. Darcy, of course,
Samantha as Gorgianna, Krycek as Whickim, an unknown character as Mr. Beingly
and I'll make up the rest. Anyway, it should be interesting. Let me know
if you have any ideas. They would be greatly appreciated.
