Iacono Source: direct Title: Soulmates From An In-Between World Author: Elizabeth L. Iacono Rating: PG Category: Vignette, Romance Keywords: Mulder/Scully Romance, Alternate Universe Spoilers: Conduit Summary: The real essence of one's self. Inspired by a scene in Conduit. Ever since the first time I saw Conduit I was always intrigued by one scene, the one where Mulder's staring at the edge of the forest and looking directly at the wolf. I don't know whether it was the camera work or scripting or my own twisted mind, but there always seems to be something more there than just what we're seeing. That's where this comes about. I know it might be a little strange, but please, give it a chance. It takes place in the beginning of the first season, and is from Mulder's POV. And just on a side note check out my new website! Please? http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Meteor/7124/index.html Feedback: Please? Tell me if this story is as strange as I think it is. (and that surfer dude guy out in California....) Soulmates From An In-Between World Elizabeth L. Iacono When I saw that wolf staring at me from the forest's edge, I thought of things I haven't thought of for a long time. Running through a forest at night, splashing through an ice cold stream, things this body couldn't even comprehend. I enjoyed it so much, being that in-between creature, who could get along with both animals and man. But it was nice being born into a human body this time around, although I didn't become aware of what I really was until I was eight. It was similar to what I was experiencing now, staring into the eyes of a big black wolf. For the first time I realized how frighteningly appropriate the name Fox was. The wolf I was staring out now wasn't one of us, one of the in-betweeners, but she could still help. She knew where there was an abnormality in the woods, one placed there by man. She told me to follow her, that she'd lead me too it. When she disappeared back into the woods I ran after her. Soon we arrived at the mound of rocks but her and her companions didn't want to relinquish their new found treasure--and possibly their next meal. I had to fire my gun into the air to get them to leave. Then Scully came running up, looking somewhat shocked when she arrived on the scene. She'd be even more shocked though if I told her how I learned where the body was. Scully was a die-hard skeptic, but I could sense that there was a little bit of belief beneath the skeptical shell. She's got to wear that cross for a reason. But Scully herself was an enigma. From the first time she walked into my office there was a sense of familiarity around her. With that sense about her I wondered if she could be my lost mate. Before I go any further let me explain. When we, the in-betweeners, take a mate (personally I hate that word) we do it for all of our existence, which, believe me, is a long time. Even before the mates meet though they have a sort of bond, so that they always know each other. Like soulmates, almost. I like that term better. There's one exception though. When we're born into a human body we're not aware of our true selves, and therefore cannot sense the bond until we are made aware. Even if we are aware we can't sense the bond clearly unless our mates are aware also. Given the sense of dull buzzing I got whenever I tried to reach out for my mate I was sure she wasn't aware. I tried to look for my mate when I was younger, but another older, wiser one than I told me that when the time was right we would meet and find each other. I began to think that I would never find her, until Scully came into my life. At first I didn't recognize her as one of us, (we can recognize an in-betweener no matter what form they're in by a certain presence they have) but soon I began to notice in Scully certain characteristics we all have, but in an extremely muted form. Then it hit me that she was one of us who was unaware. That was why I hadn't picked up on her right away. She was the one though, my soulmate. The one I had loved for ages part in different forms and different times and will love for many times to come. I realized though that it would be my job this time to make her aware. I didn't know why, but I just knew that's how it had to be. I didn't know how Scully would take the awakening, but as is usually the case after the initial shock wears off recognition floods in and everything is fine. The matter that was pressing was how I would approach her about it. Do I just go up to her one day at work and totally shock the hell out of her? I really didn't think she would appreciate that. So I decided the best way to approach it was to go to her one night while she was at home, preferably while she was sleeping. That way if anything went wrong she could just pass it off as a dream. With a little suggestion from the subject of said dream, of course. Soon after we got back from the Morris case in Iowa I knew it was time. As cliche as it sounds, it was a dark and stormy night when I decided to visit Scully. Almost a fitting atmosphere. I slipped into her apartment silently, using a few tricks I knew that weren't your average tricks. I guess they could almost be termed magickal, but I just accept it as something I'm able to do. I moved into her bedroom and saw her lying there in her bed, sound asleep. I thought she looked incredible. Looking at her there I felt some missing memories of my own come rushing back, memories of us lying together in different times and different forms, but always together. Outside the apartment there was a bright flash of lightning, and I knew the following burst of thunder would be enough to wake her up. The thunder boomed, and Scully sat bolt upright in bed, gasping from the sudden noise that woke her up. I waited by the window, wondering how long it would take for her to see me there. Her eyes traveled around the room, still trying to recover from the quick wake up call, when they finally alighted on me. "Mulder?" she asked. I could hear the puzzlement in her voice. "What are you doing here?" I decided that it would be best not to say anything, so I just walked over to the side of the bed closest to her and held out my hand. I silently pleaded with her to accept it, hoping that she would realize the significance of it. Scully must have known and she tentatively reached out and placed her hand in mine. I tightened my fingers around hers and suddenly felt a shock run through my body, coming directly from where our hands were joined. She had to have noticed that. I stood there for a few minutes, feeling the shocks run from my hand into hers and back again. After the shocks died down Scully lifted her eyes to mine and I saw something there that I hadn't seen before: recognition. Not just recognition between Scully and Mulder, but a deeper recognition of two souls finally coming back to each other. "Oh, my God," Scully whispered, her mind working. Through our bond I could tell she was going through a selection of shared memories of times that were special to both of us. She twisted her hand in my grip and took hold of my hand, tugging me towards the bed. I willingly followed and sat down in front of her. Then, I did something that I had been wanting to do for a long time. I leaned down and kissed her full on the lips. When I felt her eagerly respond I deepened the kiss. That night we reaffirmed and strengthened the bond we shared. When I woke up the next morning I saw Scully propped up on one elbow leaning over me and looking down at me, smiling. You could tell just by the look of her that she was aware, that she knew what she really was. There was a sense of self-assuredness and a touch of wildness that wasn't there before. She leaned down and kissed me passionately, and then when she pulled away she smiled once again at me and said. "Now that's something I haven't been able to do for a long time." I grinned back at her and wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her close. "I know the feeling," I whispered back. That day we decided to go to an out of the way park a distance away from D.C., a mini escape so to speak (luckily it was the weekend). As we walked through the forest holding hands we quietly reminisced of times we'd shared in the past. The day went on and we began to run through the forest, darting through trees, leaping over rocks and any other things that were in our way. And I'm positive that the boy who was wandering away from his tour group that day who saw those two wolves in the forest, a large brown one and a smaller reddish one, will look upon it as a incredible, once in a lifetime sighting (because wild wolves are very rare anywhere near Washington D.C.), when it really was two soulmates remembering the times they spent together in ages past and thinking about the times they would be spending together in the future.
