Stepping Out By- Kelly Mullins "Walter, hurry up we're gonna be late!" Mulder called from the living room of Skinner's apartment. "Scully, that warning goes for you too!" "Hold on Foxy, we're busy." Scully responded from the upstairs bathroom. "Without me?" He asked panting from his charge up the stairs. Both Skinner and Scully turned around from their place in front of the sink, and started laughing at Mulder. "Not busy like that babe." Scully corrected. "Here, come help me." She pointed him in the direction of Skinner's bow tie that hung loosely around his neck. "You're taller, I can't get it." "And I can't seem to move it either." The previously silent Skinner stated. Mulder reached up and soon the bow tie was standing at attention, and the three were prepared to leave. This one night was the night they had been speaking of for weeks, a FBI found-raising gala. The first time their colleagues would see Skinner, Scully, and Mulder together in a social situation. The three had been together for four months; they had made a life commitment to each other after their first night together. They reason they had gotten together was unknown to any of them, or so they had started to claim to themselves. The FBI gala was their first and probably only chance to be out together in DC, Skinner had brought up the subject one night during dinner, causing Mulder to almost choke on his lemon chicken. They had, once they had decided Mulder could breathe, decided that the gala was a good idea and they wouldn't be too overt, just be themselves- only slightly restrained. Skinner got the great honor of driving, some thing that was a common topic of debate among their 'family'. "Well, we're off." He announced receiving a squeeze on each shoulder, one from Mulder- in the backseat, the other from Scully- next to him. As the car made its way through the streets of Washington DC, Walter Skinner felt himself go rigid. He slid into full AD mode, some thing he knew his lovers despised about him, he didn't like that aspect of his personality either. "Calm down Walter." Scully placed her hand over his on the wheel. "I'm calm, really." He replied. "Oh come on Wally, you look more constipated than a 200 year-old turtle." Mulder interjected from the backseat, eliciting a giggle from Scully, Skinner visibly relaxed at the sound of their exuberance. "We're going to get through this aren't we?" He stated in a moment of revelation. "Definantly." Mulder and Scully answered in unison, elapsing into a chorus of laughter. "Oh brother." He continued into the darkness. Their arrival was abrupt, no one expected to get there so soon, but they had, and they had to go in. "Well every body ready?" Scully asked as they stepped out of the car, into the vacant lot. "No, but you're going to drag us in anyway, aren't you?" Mulder spoke for himself, as well as Skinner. "Oh come on guys, it won't be that bad." She soothed. "Sure." Skinner pouted. "I think I've changed my mind, I don't really want to go." "Too late now, I'm sure every thing will be great." Scully kissed both men, both repeated the gesture, and then one on each side of Scully they made their way into the hall. "I'm scared." Skinner murmured in mock fear over Scully's head. She grabbed one hand on each side of her and gave it a light squeeze as they joined the crowd. They had decided not to dance before they had arrived, none of them wanted to be left alone, and if they danced with Scully, Walter and Mulder would want to dance with each other- and Scully didn't want to have to breakup a fight over who would lead. So instead the 3 wallflowers drank and spoke with the other non-dancers around them. "Walter! So glad you could make it!" The director interrupted an Agent who was trying to get himself in the good-graces of the AD. "Well sir, I tried to get out of it, but there was nothing else for me to do." They both laughed and Mulder, Scully, and just about everyone else turned around to look. The director paid everyone else no heed and turned back to Walter. "I've noticed you're quite close to those X-Files agents of yours tonight." He commented. "I find that the closer they are the less trouble they cause." Skinner received a glare from Scully and continued. "Of course it also builds teamwork and a closer working relationship to keep them on a short leash. Behind the Director Dana and 'Fox' collapsed into a heap of giggles. "Well Walt, keep it up, all three of you seem to be in better spirits." He walked away and the two still-laughing agents returned to Walter's side. "You keep us on a short leash! Wally you should have told us you were into that." Mulder whispered into his ear. "Anybody else wanna go home?" Scully asked oblivious to Mulder's last comment. "Definantly." Skinner answered. "Oh yea." Came from Mulder. They finally made it to the car, only to get briefly stopped by Kimberley, Skinner's secretary. Fortunately for them, Kim knew about their relationship and understood that they might be uncomfortable in the myriad group of their colleagues; so she let them go, warning them to expect a phone call the next morning for forfeiting the conversation that night. "I'm driving." Mulder called and reached his hands into Skinner's pant's pockets. "Mulder! Keep your hands to yourself, we're in public." Skinner gently hissed, not too seriously. All Scully could do was stand by and smile at the sight her two lovers made. Eventually Mulder did get the keys, but not before Skinner gave him a hard time. In the car Skinner and Scully chose to sit together in the backseat leaving Mulder alone in the front. "Hey guys, don't so anything without me." Mulder whined. "Don't worry, we wouldn't, we couldn't, not without you." Scully did a fake theatrical performance. "I'm just worried Skinny won't be able to contain himself." "You're the one who insisted on driving." "Well yeah, but..." Mulder stammered. The car was silent except for the sounds of breathing from its three occupants. For 15 minutes everyone basked in the silence, until Scully took off her heels and threw one into the empty passenger seat, the other she threw hitting Mulder's thigh. "Oops, Sorry." She feigned innocence. "No you're not." "You're right, I'm to happy, I'm getting giddy." "And now you're trying to kill me so you can have Wally all to yourself!" "Oh yeah, sure, definantly." Skinner said, Scully laying her head on his shoulder. "So Skinner, what's this I hear about a leash?" Mulder asked. "Oh brother." THE END!!
