Summary:
A session of thinking that occurs in the far future of the
files. In it, Mulder and Scully express why and why not they thought
it was worth all the pain to get here. Rated PG for thoughts on romance.

I got to thinking about mountains one night and thought up this little
interlude whilst examining lifes downers for the Agents. Beware of a kiss
and some desicions that will not shock a Relationshipper.

Disclaimer: The X-Files are the props of CC, 1013, and FOX
I wish they were mine but then I'd have to a morphing mutant
or a body-changing thief. Either way, it'd suck.;)

guidance counselor in life. His ponderings inspired this

"Summits"

"How did we get here?" A deep male voice asked the wintry air.
"Simple. We worked at it," a rich woman's voice answered. The woman and
man in question stood atop a mountain summit; looking out over miles of
hills, valleys, and forest. It had taken them the better part of a day to
reach the top and lots of teamwork which was apart of the survival trek that
they were on.
But the man wasn't talking about the climb itself..and the woman knew
that. Over the five years that they had been partners, they had accomplished
so much and gained so little that it seemed a mountain compared to the "ants"
below. Through disappearances, deaths, wounds, and anguish, the pair had
held onto the truths they knew and each other only. All else had ceased to
contend with their hunger for the truth and their need for justice. It
seemed they had spent a lifetime in backwater towns, greasy food joints,
roach hotels, car chases, murders, bizarre deaths, and occasions of the
extreme possibilities becoming real. As they sat on this summit, they were
a weary yet satisfied couple. But, they still questioned the price they paid
to be content.
"Was it all worth it, Scully?" Mulder asked quietly, seating himself on a
ledge overlooking the grand exapnse of wilderness. Bone tired from the climbm
Scully seated herself next to her partner and took his hand in hers.
Callused from having a tightened grip on his gun, Scully gently massaged his
large hand in her small ones as she thought; not meeting his eyes. The years
had left lines at her the corner's of her partner eyes and added a few hairs
of grey into his tousled brown hair. Her own hair had grown long in the last
year and her forehead had acquired worry lines from the many times she had
been seperated from him; never knowing if he lived or not. Yet she sensed
that if and when he did ever die, she would know about it. The bond that they
had cultivated over the years was strong and solid; a rock to hang onto in
good times and bad. It went past partnership and had delved deep into fathoms
of trust and respect to anchor near the heart of love itself. But they had
never shifted that bond any deeper than that. They had no reason to. Each
other was all they needed...or so it seemed.
The prices they had paid for this summit were extraordinary. Mulder's
father dead, her sister dead. His mother in a coma, hers without a daughter.
Herself being abducted, him dying out in New Mexico. It was all such a
waste of time and life. Had it been worth it? Worth a startingly dismal
triumph over Cancer Man and his minions? No, it hadn't. The final downfall
was the discovery of Samantha's grave a mile from the Mulder's house where
she had been murdered nearly 30 years ago.
The part that had been worth it was simple: they had each other. If the
X-Files had never existed or the quest begun, they would never had met. And,
as selfish as it was, Scully would think it worth it during all the bad times
just so they were together.
"It was worth it," she said harshly. "To us, but not to our families."
Blinded by sudden tears, Scully, face worn, turned to confront the chill
breeze of evening teasing her hair. Mulder saw the tears and squeezed her
hand in his.
"What do we have, Scully?" He asked thoughtfully.
"We're-we're something that exists only in fairy tales, Mulder," she sighed.
The words jsut wouldn't come. Not even after five years. They seemed lodged
in her throat for eternity. That is, until he kissed her. Reaching across
her, Mulder pulled her into his arms and laid a sweet kiss on her ruby lips.
Scully wrapped her arms around him and felt the tears increase as she found
what she had been looking for: love. Pulling away, they smiled at one another
shyly.
   "You mean soulmates?" He smiled.
"Something like that," she grinned, the worry lines smoothing on her
forehead.
"C'mon, let's continue this someplace warm," he said and helped her to
her feet. Taking one last look over the cliff, the pair began the trek back
down to their camp; the setting sun on their backs and the wind at their
feet.
