Is she really a black knight instead of a white pawn? My gun was aimed right at his head. My finger was tightening around the trigger as sweat rolled down my face. I didn't know how I got there or why I was there, but I *did* know that I was ready to kill this man. He removed a cigarette from his lips and exhaled. I held my breath. "As paranoid and untrusting as you are, Mulder, you failed to realize that the one person you trust is the one person that you never could," the puff of smoke said. His voice was raspy and confident, unwavering. "What the hell are you talking about?" My anger was very apparent in my voice and I knew it. "It's your partner. You trust her passionately but your passion has blinded you. Scully's been working for us for more years than you've known her. She's a valuable player simply because of the trust that you instill in her. That trust allows her to inform us about you." "She is *not* on your side!" I shouted. "Oh no?" the man grinned, "Why is it, do you think, that she never believes you? Because she has to cover it up. Deny everything. She has to try to deter you from finding the truth. But at the same time, she knows when to believe because she knows that she has to keep your trust." I shifted my weight on both feet and gritted my teeth. "You're a liar!" I bellowed. CGB Spender chuckled. "Watch, Mulder. Wait. She'll come. We're meeting tonight. She'll come, you'll see." The door opened behind me and I looked back to see Scully standing in the doorway. Instantly, she drew her gun. "Mulder, what's going on?" She asked anxiously. "Scully, what are you doing here?!?!" I yelled. She raised her gun and pointed it at me. "Scully, what are you doing?" "Put the gun down, Mulder," she said. "Get that gun off of me, Scully!" I said angrily. "Sorry Mulder, I can't do that. I can't let you shoot him." "Why the hell not!?!?!" I cried. "Because it's not his time to die...its yours," she clicked the safety off her gun. "Scully, don't! Scully, please...what are you doing?!?! SCULLY!!" There was a loud bang and the world went black. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Mulder awoke in a cold sweat, jumping up from the couch and he suddenly realized that it was all a dream. He chuckled to himself. Scully wouldn't betray me. Would she? He shook his head of the thought. Of course not, he told himself. But he still couldn't rid himself of doubt. He arrived fashionably late to the office. As he entered, he noticed that there was no Scully. Perhaps she was at a meeting. He sat down at his desk and began restlessly flipping through files. He couldn't help thinking about the dream he had the night before. He knew she was on his side, but still...CGB had made some good points... In walked Scully. Beautiful, as ever. She gave him a brief smile as she came in. She looks guilty, Mulder thought. "Where were you?" Mulder asked, suspicious. "In a meeting," she replied, sitting down at the computer. "With who?" he pressed. Scully cleared her throat, "Skinner," she answered. "Uhuh," Mulder said, a bit sarcastically. Scully stole a quick glance at him, rolled her eyes, then started to type. "Have I ever told you that dreams are answers to questions we haven't yet learned how to ask?" he asked. "Yes, more than once," Scully answered, paying no mind to the fact that the question came totally out of the blue. "Uhuh. What are you doing?" Mulder asked. "Writing an email," she said. "To whom?" "What's with all the questions this morning, Mulder?" she asked. "Why won't you tell me who you're sending that to?" he insisted. "Because its none of your business," Scully replied. Mulder jumped up from his desk just as Scully hit the send button. She shot backward in her rolly-chair as Mulder grabbed the monitor and looked at it. The message said, "Your Message Has Been Sent". "Who did you send that to?!" He shouted at her. She stared at him in awe. What was going on with him this morning? She thought. "No one," she whispered. Mulder shoved the monitor off the desk and it shattered with sparks flying. Scully jumped out of her chair. "Mulder, what the hell is wrong with you?!?" "You sent an email to *him*, didn't you?!" he shouted. Scully steadied herself and tried to be as calm as she could. "Mulder, who's 'him'?" "Oh, don't deny it, Scully. You know who I'm talking about. I know your dirty little secret!" "What secret, Mulder?" she asked, quietly. "You sent an email to CGB Spender, didn't you? You've been on his side all along," he said through gritted teeth. Scully cocked her head to one side. "What are you talking about, Mulder? You know I'm on your side. I always have been." "Fuck you, Scully! I *trusted* you!!" "You can still trust me, Mulder," she replied. He stormed out of the office. Scully stood stunned, completely, totally, and utterly stunned. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* --ONE WEEK LATER-- Scully drove from Mulder's apartment to hers. He was no where to be found. After his outburst over a week ago, she hadn't been able to contact him in any way. She was extremely worried and she was so distracted that she almost ran a stop sign or two. Thousands of emotions flowed through her as she got out of her car at her apartment. She was shaking with fear, anger, and frustration. She wished she knew what she had done to make him believe she was on anyone's side but his. She fumbled with her keys and unlocked her door. As she stepped inside, she drew her gun immediately. Mulder had his gun pointed at the cigarette-smoking man. CGB looked rather calm, considering the circumstances. Mulder looked over at Scully. "What are you doing here?!?!" He demanded. "This is *my* apartment, Mulder, what are *you* doing here?" "What is *he* doing here??" Mulder motioned toward CGB. Scully glanced at him, then back at Mulder. "I don't know," she stated calmly. Suddenly, Mulder dropped his gun. He looked at the silver weapon in Scully's hand. "Go ahead. Do it, Scully," he said. Scully raised her gun slowly. Mulder closed his eyes and took deep breaths. "I trusted you," Mulder whispered. Scully pulled the trigger with a loud bang. His body went limp and fell helplessly to the ground. She dropped her gun and stared indifferently at the body lying on her floor. Mulder opened his eyes and looked at Scully, then to the man on the floor. She shot the cancer man, not me. He looked back up at her in amazement. "Scully, I..." "Get out." "What?" "You heard me, get the hell out," Scully shouted at him. She stared at Mulder angrily, while trying to hold back her tears. Mulder didn't budge. Scully suddenly cracked, letting tears spill down her face as she took a few steps backward, slammed into the wall and slid down to the floor, sobbing uncontrollably. Mulder walked over and knelt down next to her. "Scully, I'm so sorry," he whispered. "I don't know what happened to me. I had this dream about this exact situation, except CBG was telling me that you were in on the conspiracy even before I met you, and explained that the reason why you always denied everything was because you had to cover it up. I didn't believe him until you came in and shot me. When I woke up, I couldn't believe I entertained the thought that you were on his side, but I guess I got suspicious that morning when you weren't there. I wasn't myself...I was stupid and paranoid and...I know its no excuse, but I am *so* sorry, Scully. Please trust me." Tears started to fall from his eyes as he watched her expectantly. Her only reply was when she let herself fall into his arms. He held her tightly and sat down next to her, and pulled her closer to him. She stopped crying and he rocked her gently, and rested his head on hers. He couldn't believe that she was forgiving him. He felt so lucky. Thank you for being in my life. He thought with a sigh. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ --LATER THAT NIGHT-- Mulder carried Scully into his bedroom. He laid her down on the bed and covered her with a blanket. He wasn't wild about letting her stay at her apartment after what had happened there. Besides, there would be police there all night and he knew that she needed rest. He closed the door behind him and went out to his computer. "One New Message" the screen blinked. It read: Dear Mulder, I'm sure this isn't the best way to tell you this. I've been debating whether or not to tell you this for a long time. I love you. I'm in love with you. There, I did it. Look, even if you don't feel the same about me, I trust you enough to know that you will be honest with me, and I hope that, either way this turns out, our relationship won't change [much]. Thank you for being in my life. Sincerely, Dana Scully That was the letter Scully was writing.... The email was for me. Tears streaked down his cheeks and he put his head in his hands. He stood up and flipped the computer off. Slowly, he peeked in the room at Scully. She opened her eyes and looked at him, squinting. "Can't you sleep?" he asked quietly, stepping into the room. She shook her head. He sighed, and sat down on the bed next to her. "You okay?" she asked. He smiled over at her. "I'm fine," he said. She watched as he kicked off his shoes and lay down next to her. "I'll stay here until you fall asleep." She smiled and rolled over, her back facing him. He put his arm around her and whispered in her ear. "I love you. Thank you for being in my life." They both were soon asleep. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* I want feedback and if I don't get any, I'll be bitter. Cnsprcygrl@hotmail.com thanks for reading!
