This is one of my first stories, so it's like wearing those badges: "PLEASE FORGIVE ME. I'M A TRAINEE" VRA- Vignette/Romance/Angst Mulder/Scully Summary: Scully thinks too much and over reacts, getting her hurt. Our favorite agents also reveal their feelings title is based on opening scene in story. isn't that just so darn special. I'm one of those people who believe Scully should drive more. And I noticed something about the character of Scully; she doesn't have expressions unless it's a 'look'. She pouts. Her face is almost always in a pout. It's not a bad thing, I just notic ed that. I also noticed from a lot of other FanFic that they make Scully too mean. Why? In my stories she only gets that means when she is drugged, on her monthly cycle and Mulder pisses her off, or because she isn't really Scully...nevermind. Read my stories a nd you'll get what I mean. What I mean is, WRITE THEM INTO CHARACTER BETTER!!! (boy, aren't I just mommy's little hypocrite) Also, they make Mulder to...perfect. No offense. He is one good-looking man. Better than that. But, his CHARACTER (not th genuine DD) isn't perfect. He isn't some casanova like other people make him to be. Not everybody makes him like that, but som e (and you KNOW who you are) do, and it makes me sick to my stomach. Basically, I'm just being a complaining little...freak. Disclaimer: ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING THAT HAS TO DO WITH THE X-FILES LEGALLY IS, sorry to say, NOT MINE. IT BELONGS TO THE ALMIGHTY X-FILE PEOPLE, which have no reason to sue me. I'm a 14 year old with no income. What would your point be. EVERYTHING, except my own creations, BELONGS TO SOMEBODY ELSE LEGALLY, unless, of course, you WANT to give me Mulder. No objections here. Make sure he come with his glasses and sweater though, k? Kewl. Now, on with the story... X~*~X~*~X~*~X~*~X~*~X~*~X~*~X~*~X~*~X~*~X~*~X It was five days since she had her meeting with Assistant Director Skinner about what happened in Antartica, and everything before that. She left out details that weren't for him to hear, though. The details about what happened in his hallway, before th e bee. She hadn't seen Mulder since then, partly because off her off time she got. And partly because she really didn't want to confront him. She thought she could handle it, and that she was above dealing with it, and all she had to do was talk about it. I mean, they weren't uncomfortable about it. She did care about him, but she thought about to much, and how it might effect her and him. She though to much, and got scared, and nervous. And she didn't want to deal with it. Scully got up to get a drink. She came back to her living room with a coke. She sat down on the couch and turned on the T.V. She flipped through the channels, but wasn't paying attention to the screen. She took a sip of her drink and started thinking. *What the hell happened then. Is that how I feel? Should I even be thinking it? Do I care for him in that way?* She didn't realize it, but she had flipped through the channels three times already. She was half way done with her drink when the controller fell. The crashing 'woke' her up to the 'real world'. She bent over and picked up the controller. She looked up at the screen to see what she stopped at. A man was standing behind a podium preaching. "Great." She turned toward the preview channel. She took another drink and watch the channels go by slowly. *That's the problem with afternoon television. There's nothing on........I wonder what that show has on it. I heard it was kind of funny.* Sh e pressed two numbers on her controller and started listening and watching. "Today on Springer, People who claimed to have been abducted by aliens, who also claim that they were married to an alien in a past life." Scully raised one eyebrow. *This show is still on?* She distracted herself by thinking again. She continued with her reasoning. *Why would he do that? Didn't he know it would make it harder for everything? And everyone?* She finished the last of her drink. *What an asshole. All he thinks about is himself. Just 'me me me'. What a jerk. He is cute. But don't judge a book by its cover. Moron. Idiot. Selfish punk.* As she thought, she got herself angry and mad. It worsened as she thought more. *Dick head. What a selfish, conceited man. He pulled me in then hurt me. Wait, why am I thinking this? Because he's a bitch. Hypocrite. 'You are the only one I trust'. Please. He'd search for the truth even if it means hurting everyone. He can do it alone, he has before. How has me criticizing helped him? I did hold him back. And he knows it, he just wants to pull down someone with him. Well, I see right through him. He won't get away with it. What a...* Her thoughts were interrupted. The TV turned louder with yelling and screaming. There were two women fighting and yelling something. "HOW DARE YOU!!! He was mine! He didn't care about you! He just needed a new test subject to probe!!" A lady on the screen, who was throwing punches, said. Scully, even though she was angry, she had to laugh a little. *These people are so confused, with the same thing that confused that jerk, Mulder, and her. Not anymore, I knew what the truth is, I don't need the details like Mulder. What was he trying t o prove? He is a good agent, and funny, and cute, and he has that smile, and.....wait. Dana, stop, that's him pulling you in again. He uses that to keep you coming. He is good at it, but he is manipulative.* The phone broke her thoughts again. She p icked up the receiver. "Hello..........Hello?" The phone rang again. It wasn't her home phone. She got up and picked up her cell phone, which wasn't far away. "Scully." "Hey Scully, it's me." *well, who else would it be? You are the only one who calls on my cell phone unless my mom or friends knows I'm away.* "Yeah. Hello." "Hi, I was wondering. When is your break over?" *So you can manipulate me some more?* "Soon. I got a week." "Oh, okay." "Mulder, why did you call?" "Um, well, I got this case on my desk right now....." "Why don't you start on it?" Mulder noticed that something was bugging her, and he had an idea, but he didn't think it would be that. "Well, I kind of already did." "That's good. I'll be a in on Monday. Good-bye Agent Mulder." Scully hung up the phone. *Still an asshole.* XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Mulder, about ten seconds after Scully hung up on him, did the same. *What..was..that?* He was sitting in his chair in the new office. It was pretty simple. *This place looks like the the other office, before that black-lunged jackass burned it. It just looks......clean. Give it a few days.* Mulder looked at his desk , which was bare. He just wanted to see her again. He didn't know why,.......of course he knows why. He did care about her. *But why was she acting like this? She didn't seemed disturbed before? Maybe because she she was infested with an alien virus that almost killed her.* Mulder laughed to himself *I got the weirdest ways to wou women. But still, why? She is mad, or it seems like, for what? And she called me Agent Mulder? Maybe....* The TV they have in the office distracted his thoughts. Another fight broke out and everybody was cheering "Jerry!" or booing. *How can people watch this. Why am I watching it?* XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Scully walked in the office, mumbling 'hi' to Mulder and sat down at her own little desk she got with the new office. She made a quick note that both desks were bare. *Figures. Just using me again. Lying to me to get me in the office. I couldn't rela x at home. Noo, I had to come here.* Mulder looked up and said 'hi' back. He took a note that she was definitely acting weird. "Something wrong, Scully?" She snapped back. "No." "Fine." Mulder said, giving up without a fight. Scully wanted to trap him now. He had to know. How couldn't he? "What about that case?" Mulder forgot about his own lie, which was meant to be harmless. "Case?" *Ha, got him* Scully thought. "Yeah, the case that you were working on Saturday." Scully did reply cocky, but she knew it, and she didn't care. Mulder's mouth hung open for a second, then he remembered. "Oh, um, it was nothing." "Sure, fine, whatever." "Al right Scully. What's bothering you?" Mulder said. He did have an idea, but he didn't expect this. Maybe it wasn't about the almost 'kiss' after all. "Whatever do you mean?" Scully said back, putting on a innocent face, sarcastically. "Oh, come on Scully. It's obvious that you are mad at me." Scully mumbled under her breath, "No shit, Sherlock." Then replied out loud. "Take a wild guess." "Damn it Scully." "No, Damn you!" Scully stood up quickly. Slowly, while the conversation continued, she walked right in front of Mulder. Mulder was shocked, but was also worked up. "For what?!" Both of their voices were raising, almost screaming. "For what! All this time you dragged me down while I dragged you, you are just reeling me in to this stupid obsession of yours!" "Is that what you think?! That I'm just using you!" They were both in each others faces now, and both seemed frustrated. Scully still looked mad, almost crying. As she spun around and held herself up by the desk behind her, turning her back to Mulder, she said "I don't know. Maybe..." She didn't continue. "Maybe? Maybe what!? Tell me Scully. Tell me why all of a sudden, you are acting like this?" Mulder knew he shouldn't continue, but he wanted so much to figure her out. "Is poor ol' Dr. Scully scared, or angry? Tell me Scully! Why are you being so protective of yourself!?" Mulder's tone of voice was demanding an answer. Scully said, back still turned, "It's not just for me." "Tell me Scully!" Scully spun around and almost screamed right in his face. "Cause I love you God Damnit! Because sometimes, the only reason I even *bother* getting up in the morning is because I can see your face, hear your voice, and make this whole quest worth while." Scully was waving a stern, pointed finger around. "Because everyday when I had my cancer and no one was there with me, I cried myself to sleep knowing that it might be the last time I even get to think of you. And you have impacted my life so much tha t if you ever left me I would die emotionally, waiting everyday for my body to follow. I'm being protective of myself because I don't want to see you get hurt. It's because I love you! Damn you!!!" Scully was now sobbing as she stormed out of the offi ce. Mulder was shocked. He just stood there till Scully slammed the door behind her. Mulder quickly thought of the events as he spun around to the door. *Fuck you Fox. Very smart. Great. You're a damn genius. Fuck* Mulder thought to himself as he sat down hard in his seat, with his head in his hands, trying to gather all the words just said. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Scully was driving down the street, crying. She couldn't believe what just happened. As she sobbed she started to feel dizzy again. *It's just from crying, you gotta calm down Dana. Calm down.* She sniffled, but still wanted to cry her heart out. After five minutes, she felt dizzy again. She looked around to try to get the dizzy spell to pass, but all she saw were tracers. *Okay, get off the road, Dana, you are in no condition to drive. You've...* She was interrupted by horn blaring. She couldn't see clearly, through her tears and her dizziness, so the next thing that was clear was blackness. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Mulder was driving towards Scully's house. He had to apologize, and talk to her. He did love her. And now, to hear her say the same words, was sorta exciting. And a little relief. But he didn't want those words to be said like that for the first time . He didn't even expect them, even though he wanted to hear them more than anything in the world. Even more than the X-Files, and finding Samantha. As he turned a corner his phone rang. Mulder got a little nervous that it might be Scully, but he barel y showed it as he picked up the phone. "M-Mulder." "Hello, Fox." *Scully probably gave her my cell number.* "Hello Ms. Scully." "Hi....um...I was.." Now Mulder heard the worried tone in her voice. "Is something wrong?" Mulder asked "Yes. Dana got in a accident. She....." As Ms. Scully continued, Mulder looked out his window as he drove by something. His eyes followed the scene. He saw an unfamiliar car with one side in the front crushed to the windshield, which wasn't there an ymore. He saw another car half way in a building, on it's side, kneeling on the frame of a window that used to be there. The car was Scully's. Mulder didn't hear what else she said, but he did interrupt her. "I'll be right there." After he hung up he pulled over quickly as close as he could to the accident. He raced over to the first person he could reach, which was a cop. "Excuse me.." He was definitely pushing for the person's attention. "Excuse me." The cop turned around and, ignoring him, started scolding him. "You aren't supposed to be here. We don't need help. You need to get back to your car or whatever and go." Mulder pulled out his badge and showed it to him. The cop stopped directing him and listened. "Yes. I need to know what hospital the people involved in the accident went to." The cop answered. "Well, there was two people involved, one was okay, thanks to a seat belt. The other was sent to Washinton State Hospital." Mulder was gone in a second, racing towards his car, then speeding away in the opposite direction of the way he was going before. Mulder leaned against a side of an elevator, waiting impatiently for it to reach his floor. He asked the first nurse he saw for the floor, and he was on his way. The elevator stopped three floors before the floor Scully was on. An attractive brunette g ot on and stood in the middle of the elevator. She looked to her side, keeping her head forward. She flipped her hair, and not on accident. She looked him up and down, then observed his hand for second. She then turned her head towards him, smiled, an d said, "Hi" Mulder, keeping a straight face, just nodded a little. The woman's smile turned into a 'fine, forget you' smile. Mulder thought to himself, *Damn. She looks good, so why am I ignoring her? Because of Scully. Besides, she seems like a easy bitch anyway.* The elevator stopped at his floor and he started to get off. The woman hit his arm as he walked by. "Sorry." The woman said. Mulder didn't look back as he walked quickly out, shaking his head, then reached the desk. "Excuse me, where might I find Dana Scully." The nurse looked through her clipboard. Mulder was startled by someone tapping his shoulder. "Are you Agent Mulder?" Mulder turned around to see a doctor. "Yes." Mulder said, then heard the nurse from behind him, "Room 221" "Ms. Scully is waiting for you in her room," was all the doctor said, then walked away. Mulder looked down the hall and saw Ms. Scully walked out of a room, with her head in one of her hands. She put her hand down and her head up. She sighed and Mulder called her name as he walked toward her. "Ms. Scully." She turned her head towards Mulder and smiled, but you could see she was upset. Mulder walked to her. "How is she?" He could tell she was on the verge of crying. "Sh-he is okay, I guess. The doctors s-say she'll be fine. All it was was a broken collarbone." Mulder could understand why she was upset, and not just because Scully was her daughter. Scully was such a beautiful, wonderful person. She was a little cocky at times, but that was just something else Mulder loved about her. So, Mulder felt for her. "She will be okay." Mulder said, reassuring Miss Scully. "She's strong. She'll be fine." "You are her best friend, and I think you understand her more than anyone, including me, and maybe herself. You are closer to her than anyone has been, so I believe you're right." Ms. Scully said, truthfully. "What are friends for." Miss Scully smiled a little, then looked into Scully's room. "Want to see her?" Mulder replied by nodding and walking into the room. Ms. Scully stayed still for a second, then walked away. Mulder sat down next to Scully, who was laying down, unconscious. as Ms. Scully walked away she thought, *They should get together already. He loves her, I can see that. Dana, however, is harder to read, but she cares about him, or else she wouldn't have stayed with him this long.* XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Mulder walked into Scully's room and thought *She looks so soft and beautiful.* Mulder thought, smiling a little. Scully opened her eyes and looked straight at Mulder, who then almost blushed and looked to the floor like a school boy. He managed to pu ll a chair next to Scully's bed and sit down, focusing his eyes everywhere but on Scully. "Mulder, I'm sorry." Mulder finally looked up and at her eyes. "For what?" "For yelling before." Mulder nodded. "It wasn't your fault." "Sure it was. I was thinking too much and I didn't think reasonably. I was protecting myself in a selfish manner." "It's alright. I'm sorry too." It was Scully's turn to argue. "What for?" "For everything. For this, for getting you hurt. For risking you." "You don't have to apologize. You didn't get me hurt. Or risk me. I stayed with you on my own." She reached out for his hand, which sort of hurt her shoulder, but she reached anyway. Mulder took her hand graciously. Scully smiled. "Mulder, I didn't mean what I said about you. I don't think you use me in anyway." "Glad to hear it." Mulder gave a reassuring smile. A middle-aged African-American nurse came in, but they didn't notice. "Pardon,.." Mulder turned around and Scully looked at the nurse, not letting go of each others hands. "Well, I need to take a blood sample real quick." Mulder looked back at Scully. "I guess I'll be right back." He stood up and then bent down to kiss her forehead. On his way back up, he whispered in her ear, "I love you too." Mulder smiled at her as she smiled back. He kept his eyes on her till he t urned around to walk out. "You can see your wife in a minute." The nurse said. Scully was about to giggle, but also protest, but she didn't. Mulder turned around quickly, mouth open, about to protest. But didn't. He looked into the room at Scully again and smiled. The nurse didn't notice anything then she closed the door. "You look so cute together. Newlyweds?" Scully laughed a little. "No." "Ah, how long have you been going together?" "Well, we really, haven't. He is my partner at work, and my friend." "~Best~ friend?" The nurse said, with a hidden meaning to her words. "Ahh, no." The nurse then looked confused as she got a tube ready. "Then what?" Scully sighed. "I don't know." XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Mulder sat outside the room, thinking about Scully. *She is so beautiful, but she takes things a little to seriously. That's why I have to tease her sometimes. She can be cocky, and a bitch, but in a good way. She is so professional all the time, I wo nder if she thinks like that too. I've known her for going on six years now, and I don't know everything going on in her head, I don't know everything about her. Mentally. I know everything about her 'physically'. I don't know what I would have done t hen. But, knowing myself, Mr. 'I need to make that payment on my monthly subscription towards my 'movies'', I still probably would have hesitated or something. Now that I think back on it, she looked good.* Scully watched as the nurse then got the small needle ready. She was a doctor, and she didn't mind the sight of blood, or anything else in that matter. She just felt a little uncomfortable when the 'doctoring' was being done to her. As she heard a fain t ringing outside of her room, she winced a little when the nurse put the needle into the inside of her arm. "I always hated this being done to me too." Scully sighed was the nurse took out the needle and discarded it. She put the tube in her pocket and headed out the door. "I'll tell your 'partner', or whatever, that he can come in now. Kay?" "Yeah, sure." Scully said as she thought of what she was going to say. *Okay, just smile and let him start the conversation. But what if he doesn't? What if there is an uncomfortable silence till my mom comes? Why am I so nervous? I've known him for about six years.* As her thoughts continued, Mulder walked in smiling. "Open or closed?" "Hmm?" "You want the door open or closed?" *God, he seems to be fine. Why isn't he nervous?* "Doesn't matter." What was really happening was that Mulder was quite the little actor. He was thinking. *Oh, shit, what is going to happen now? Please say she'll start talking. I hope she can't tell I'm nervous. How can she be so calm?* Mulder took his seat from before. No one was talking. Both of their thoughts were along the same lines. *Please say something. I beg you* They both knew that they couldn't hear each other telepathically, but they pleaded to the other in their heads. Scully spoke up, and Mulder thought it was about time someone did, or he would go crazy. Scully started quoting her thoughts, then added a little extra. "Mulder, you are a paranoid, complicated, 'spooky', teasing, sometimes a pain-in-the-ass man." Mulder was shocked by her words, they weren't what he was expecting. Then Scully continued, so Mulder wouldn't get the wrong ideas. "But, you are also a gentle, giving, kind, and handsome. And I love everything about you." Scully smiled and Mulder did too. He glowed with pride that someone thought so highly of him, which wasn't something he was used to. Then he started with his own remarks. "Let me say, that you're no picnic either." Scully eyes widened a bit and she lifted her head an inch. "But, your cockiness, beauty, strong willed, skeptical, serious, controlling personality is just a number of things I love about you. Scully was touched by his words, but she couldn't help one thought. *Cockiness!?* Scully held out her hand again and Mulder held it. He put his elbow on the bed and kissed her hand. He gently rested his chin on their hands that were locked and said softly, "You can be a bitch at times to." Mulder smiled, meaning it as a joke. Scully's mouth opened, but also smiled. She replied not so softly, "Well, you're an asshole sometimes as well!" She smiled, knowing that this is going to continue for a minute. Mulder raised his head again. There hands not letting go, and they didn't even notice it. Mulder replied, "Short, red-headed skeptic." He never thought as Scully this,.....playful. *Skeptic am I?* Then Scully said back "Lanky, porn star, believe-it-all." Mulder laughed a little at that one, so did Scully. She reached with her other hand to touch his face, but pulled back and winced a little, barely noticeable, but Mulder noticed. His smile dropped a little and he stroke her hair with his free hand. They sat there in a silence, but it wasn't uncomfortable. Scully closed her eyes as Mulder's hand soothed her. Scully woke up, realizing that she had fallen asleep with Mulder's touch. She tried lifting herself into a sitting position, but she fell back onto the bed, wincing in pain as it decended all throughout her body from her shoulder. Scully gasp woke Mulde r up, who was still in the chair, his head on the bed, his hands as his pillow. He sat up straight quickly and blinked hard. "Hey," Scully said. "Good morning sleepy-head," Mulder answered, streching, then placed his hand on hers. Scully smiled. After a second she asked, "Mulder, what happens after this?" Mulder really didn't know how to answer the question. "I-I don't know. I guess we'll just live each day as it comes." "You know how I hate surprises," Scully joked. "Well, I know one surprise that you aren't going to hate." "Really? Which is that?" Scully wasn't playing with Mulder, she really had no idea what he was getting at. "How about this." Mulder quickly went over her and kissed her softly. Scully's first reaction was shock, then she closed her wide-eyes and kissed back, deepening the kiss, showing Mulder that she cared for him in all the ways he did for her. They loved each other. Not only did this physical kiss show, but their unspoken connection between each other that will never be questioned, never be altered, and never be broken as long has they had each other.
