It is late but Scully does not sleep.
At this moment the two most important people in her
life lie within yards of one another. One is a tiny 7
pound bundle with downy hair in a cot she can see
into the next room through the open doorways, the
small nightlight Illuminates her sons perfect little
face. The second person lies at her side. It is
Mulder.

In sleep he looks like a boy, or at least he has the
youthful look he had when she first met him. But eight
years of the strange life they lead have left telltale
signs on this face. It is and always will be a
handsome one, but when he is awake the small lines
etched at the sides of his eyes and across his
forehead bear testimony to all the worry, fear and
heartache he has had to endure. Now in the oblivion
of sleep they are smoothed away. There are no
nightmares tonight. She looks across again at her son
and recalls the joy she felt when she was told that it
was possible afterall for her to bear a child and
even though it had later appeared that invitro had
failed it hadn't mattered because William had been
concieved naturally on a warm stormy night in Mulder's
bed. There had been no embarresment or nervousness
that night just awonderful inevitability, they had
both known it would happen sooner or later, they
belonged to one another, they were exclusive, other
people sat on the perimeter of their lives and were
only allowed in on rare ocasions.

She gazes at Mulder's sleeping form, devouring him
with his eyes at this moment, she knows of two
certainties regarding this man one that he loves her
with every fibre of his being and two that very soon
he will leave her again. Not because he wants to but
beacuse he is an honorable man there is still the good
fight to be fought and he will go off and fight it so
that ultimatley they may have a secure future
together.

Suddenly there is a small fretful whimper from the
next room, before she has time to move Mulder is awake
he lays his hand on her.
"It's ok Scully I'll go" he says sleeply

She watches him bending over the cot speaking soothing
words, he picks their child up and turns back towards
her. The sight burns into her memory forever it will
be as clear to her when she is old as it is on this
blessend night, her beautiful Mulder walking towards
her carrying William in his strong arms, his lips
pressed softly to the childs temple, Williams tiny
hand reaches up to his fathers bottom lip Mulder takes
it in his mouth sucking gentle on the tiny fingers.
He climbs into bed and looks at Scully sheepishly.
"I Know I'm getting him into bad habits Scully but
when he's awake I just wanna hold him"
She raises her hand to his face caressing his cheek
unshed tears suddenly stinging behind her eyes.
"I know you do Mulder it's ok"
She leans in and presses her lips to his, Mulder
smiles at her and then down at William laying between
them he takes Scully's hand and circles his other arm
around his son. After some time Scully closes her
eyes embracing the silence which is only broken by
William's soft murmerings and Mulders ever deepening
breathing, contentment washes over her, she is happy,
she loves and is loved and whatever the future holds
either joy or pain she has this moment, and for now it
is all she needs.

The End
