They couldn't watch me forever. A moment's indiscretion and I had slipped away. I left a note. Out of consideration for their kindness and loyalty. I said, Thank you. I said, Goodbye. They thought to keep her from me. Negotiating the dark corridors proved easy. I am long accustomed to basements. In my time, I am a bit slower than before. But no less determined. I smile at sight of her-My Angel. I knew they would bring her here to rest. She had spent so many hours in just such A cold metal place plying her trade. I reach out to wake her, but think better of it. It has been a long, arduous journey for us both. Better to let her sleep. She looks so peaceful. I have preparations to make while she rests. They thought to keep us apart-how very silly. I am no longer a young man. I no longer race ahead mindlessly. I merely plod along, task by task. But I am determined and that is what matters. I make use of what is at hand. The sheets crisp and white draped over cold steel. This is not the first time we'd played this game. In our younger days, it was quite the frolic. Sorry, Angel. Only one room left at the Inn. One room. One bed. Two Hearts. One rhythm. One Soul. A more sensuous creature never lived. My Angel, the Healer, the Protector of Our Soul. She moved like the waves of the Ocean in her eyes. Deep and strong. Cresting high toward the Heavens. My Angel made me a Believer. She made me Want to Believe. With this Ring, I thee Wed. With this body, I thee Worship. Truer words were never spoken. I found My Truth in her. And in Loving her. Rest, Angel. Rest. I'll make this Right. You'll see. I kept my Promise. Now you keep yours. Put in a good word for me Upstairs. I Trust God to Understand. I take great care with her. Bathing her gently to remove their taint. Medicinal smells, rough handling. All washed away by Loving hands. I'm glad that she will go to God In All Her Glory. It is fitting. It is Right. For myself, the gray suit. That was her Favorite. The Marvin the Martian tie That was mine. This will be the very Last Time That I lay My Angel down In Our Bed. Our One Bed. This will be the very Last Time That I climb beneath sheets to Join Her. Never Again to Part. I kept my Promise, Angel No Violence to myself. Now you keep yours. 'Til Death Do Us Part-- Had no place in Our Vow. It was NOT a nervous omission. No Unintended Oversight. Never Again To Part. That was Our Promise. And so very, very Right. And as I take My Angel in my arms. To Warm Her from the Cold. I smile at the Memory of Our Days. Together. And know the Bliss of a Broken Heart. Forgive Me, Angel. Love Me. I Trust God to Understand. They thought Our Time was over. Perhaps, for once, they are Right. Time...slips...Away....
